Critical slowing down near a bifurcation or limit point leads to a dynamical hysteresis that cannot be avoided by sweeping a control parameter slowly through the critical point. This paper analytically illustrates, with the help of a simple model, the bifurcation shift. We describe an inexpensive experiment using a semiconductor laser where this phenomenon occurs near the threshold of a semiconductor laser. [DOI: 10.1119/1.1688783]

The influence of current modulation on feedback-induced transverse-mode regimes of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCELs) is studied numerically. It is noted that as the modulation amplitude increases, there is a switch to dynamics governed by the current modulation.

The experiment of Uchida reporting on the synchronization of multimode semiconductor lasers coupled unidirectionally through one of the transmitter modes is analyzed. It is shown that only the coupled modes are synchronized and that the dynamical regimes of the two lasers are different, though leading to similar power spectra.

Diffusion coefficient serves as a control parameter in the analysis of the competition between small-scale and large-scale gratings in the laser dynamics and the effect of diffusion of free carriers on two-mode laser interactions. The stability of solutions diminishes with the diffusion coefficient.

Rate equations were used to evaluate a periodical-gain-modulated two-node laser with respect to deep and small modulation. The pump parameter for deep modulation was situated between the single-mode and two-mode thresholds while the pump parameter for the small modulation was above the second mode's lasing threshold. Changes in the laser's response characteristics corresponded with the modulation amplitude.
