Blazars, the peculiar class of active galactic nuclei (AGN), are known to show flux variations across the accessible electromagnetic spectrum. Though they have been studied extensively for their flux variability characteristics across wavelengths, information on their ultraviolet (UV) flux variations on time scales of hours is very limited. Here, we present the first UV flux variability study on intraday time scales of a sample of 10 blazars comprising 2 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 8 BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs). These objects, spanning a redshift (z) range of 0.034 <= z <= 1.003, were observed in the far-UV (FUV: 1300 - 1800 \text{\AA}) and near-UV (NUV: 2000 - 3000 \text{\AA}) wavebands using the ultraviolet imaging telescope on board AstroSat. UV flux variations on time scales of hours were detected in 9 sources out of the observed 10 blazars. The spectral variability analysis showed a bluer-when-brighter trend with no difference in the UV spectral variability behavior between the studied sample of FSRQs and BL Lacs. The observed UV flux and spectral variability in our sample of both FSRQs and BL Lacs revealed that the observed UV emission in them is dominated by jet synchrotron process., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We investigate the torus size -- luminosity relation of Type 1 AGNs based on the reverberation-mapping analysis using the light curves of the optical continuum and the IR continuum obtained with the W1 and W2-bands of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) survey. The final sample consists of 446 and 416 AGNs, respectively, for W1 and W2-band light curves, covering a large dynamic range of bolometric luminosity from $10^{43.4}$ to $10^{47.6}$ $erg \, s^{-1}$, which show reliable lag measurements based on our quality assessment analysis. After correcting for the accretion disk contamination in the observed IR flux, we constrain the torus size ($R_{dust}$) and AGN bolometric luminosity ($L_{bol}$) relationship with the best-fit slope of 0.39 (0.33) for the W1- (W2-) band, which is shallower than expected from the dust radiation equilibrium model. By combining the previous K-band lag measurements, we find that the measured torus size depends on the observed wavelength of the dust radiation, as $R_{dust,K}:R_{dust,W1}:R_{dust,W2}$ = 1.0:1.5:1.8 ($R_{dust} \, \propto \, \lambda^{0.80}$) at $L_{bol}$ = $10^{46} \, erg \, s^{-1}$, confirming a stratified structure of the torus, where wavelength-dependent emissions originate from distinct regions of the torus. By investigating the deviation from the best-fit torus size -- luminosity relation, we find a moderate correlation between the offset from the $R_{dust}$--$L_{bol}$ relation and Eddington ratio. This suggests a possible influence of the Eddington ratio on the observed flattening of the $R_{dust}$--$L_{bol}$ relationship., Comment: 35 pages, 21 figures, 6 tables. Corrected for typos. Changing-look (CL) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), characterized by appearance/disappearance of broad emission lines in the span of a few years, present a challenge for the AGN unified model, whereby the Type 1 vs. Type 2 dichotomy results from orientation effects alone. We present a systematic study of a large sample of spectroscopically classified AGNs, using optical variability data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) as well as follow-up spectroscopy data. We demonstrate that Type 1 vs. 2 AGN can be neatly separated on the basis of the variability metric $\sigma_{\rm QSO}$, which quantifies the resemblance of a light curve to a damp random walk model. For a small sub-sample, however, the ZTF light curves are inconsistent with their previous classification, suggesting the occurrence of a CL event. Specifically, we identify 35 (12) turn-on (turn-off) CL AGN candidates at $z < 0.35$. Based on follow-up spectroscopy, we confirm 17 (4) turn-on (turn-off) CL AGNs out of 21 (5) candidates, presenting a high success rate of our method. Our results suggest that the occurrence rate of CL AGNs is $\sim$0.3% over timescales of 5 to 20 years, and confirm that the CL transition typically occurs at the Eddington ratio of $\leq 0.01$., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures. The correlation between optical and $\gamma$-ray flux variations in blazars reveals a complex behaviour. In this study, we present our analysis of the connection between changes in optical and $\gamma$-ray emissions in the blazar Ton 599 over a span of approximately 15 years, from August 2008 to March 2023. Ton 599 reached its highest flux state across the entire electromagnetic spectrum during the second week of January 2023. To investigate the connection between changes in optical and $\gamma$-ray flux, we have designated five specific time periods, labeled as epochs A, B, C, D, and E. During periods B, C, D, and E, the source exhibited optical flares, while it was in its quiescent state during period A. The $\gamma$-ray counterparts to these optical flares are present during periods B, C, and E, however during period D, the $\gamma$-ray counterpart is either weak or absent. We conducted a broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting by employing a one-zone leptonic emission model for these epochs. The SED analysis unveiled that the optical-UV emission primarily emanated from the accretion disk in quiescent period A, whereas synchrotron radiation from the jet dominated during periods B, C, D, and E. Diverse correlated patterns in the variations of optical and $\gamma$-ray emissions, like correlated optical and $\gamma$-ray flares, could be accounted for by changes in factors such as the magnetic field, bulk Lorentz factor, and electron density. In the innermost regions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), matter is understood to be flowing onto the Supermassive black hole (SMBH), which forms an accretion disk. This disk is responsible for the optical/UV continuum emission observed in the spectra of AGN. Reverberation Mapping of the accretion disk using multiple bands can yield the structure of the disk. The emission is expected to be of the black body type peaking at different wavelengths. Hence, depending on the temperature of the disk, continuous, simultaneous monitoring in multiple wavelength ranges to cover hotter inner regions and cooler outer regions can yield the structure and temperature profile of the accretion disk itself. In this study, we present initial results from our accretion disk reverberation mapping campaign targeting AGN with Super High Eddington Accreting Black Holes (SEAMBH). Our analysis on one of the sources- IRAS 04416+1215; based on the broadband observations using the Growth India telescope (GIT), reveals that the size of the accretion disk for this source, calculated by cross-correlating the continuum light curves is larger than expected from the theoretical model. We fit the light curves directly using the thin disk model available in {\sc javelin} and find that the disk sizes are approximately 4 times larger than expected from the Shakura Sunyaev (SS) disk model. The broad line region (BLR) size-luminosity relation has paramount importance for estimating the mass of black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Traditionally, the size of the H$\beta$ BLR is often estimated from the optical continuum luminosity at 5100\angstrom{} , while the size of the H$\alpha$ BLR and its correlation with the luminosity is much less constrained. As a part of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project (SAMP) which provides six-year photometric and spectroscopic monitoring data, we present our measurements of the H$\alpha$ lags of 6 high-luminosity AGNs. Combined with the measurements for 42 AGNs from the literature, we derive the size-luminosity relations of H$\alpha$ BLR against broad H$\alpha$ and 5100\angstrom{} continuum luminosities. We find the slope of the relations to be $0.61\pm0.04$ and $0.59\pm0.04$, respectively, which are consistent with the \hb{} size-luminosity relation. Moreover, we find a linear relation between the 5100\angstrom{} continuum luminosity and the broad H$\alpha$ luminosity across 7 orders of magnitude. Using these results, we propose a new virial mass estimator based on the H$\alpha$ broad emission line, finding that the previous mass estimates based on the scaling relations in the literature are overestimated by up to 0.7 dex at masses lower than $10^7$~M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (Jun. 25th, 2023). 21 pages, 12 figures

We present the results of photometric reverberation mapping observations on the changing look active galactic nucleus Mrk 590 at z = 0.026. The observations were carried out from July to December, 2018 using broad band B, R and narrow band H{\alpha} and S II filters. B-band traces the continuum emission from the accretion disk, R-band encompasses both the continuum emission from the accretion disk and the redshifted H{\alpha} line from the broad line region (BLR), S II band contains the redshifted H{\alpha} emission and the H{\alpha} band traces the continuum emission underneath the S II band. All the light curves showed strong variation with a fractional root-mean-square variation of 0.132 (+/-) 0.001 in B-band and 0.321 (+/-) 0.001 in H{\alpha} line. From cross-correlation function analysis, we obtained a delayed response of H{\alpha} line emission to the optical B-band continuum emission of 21.44(+1.49/-2.11) days in the rest-frame of the source, corresponding to a linear size of the BLR of 0.018 pc. This is consistent with previous estimates using H{\beta}. By combining the BLR size with the H{\alpha} line full width at half maximum of 6478 (+/-) 240 km/s measured from a single-epoch spectrum obtained with the Subaru telescope, we derived a black hole mass of 1.96 (+0.15 / -0.21) X 10^8 Msun., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS), 5 October 2021

The impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is being felt in all spheres of our lives -- cutting across the boundaries of nation, wealth, religions or race. From the time of the first detection of infection among the public, the virus spread though almost all the countries in the world in a short period of time. With humans as the carrier of the virus, the spreading process necessarily depends on the their mobility after being infected. Not only in the primary spreading process, but also in the subsequent spreading of the mutant variants, human mobility plays a central role in the dynamics. Therefore, on one hand travel restrictions of varying degree were imposed and are still being imposed, by various countries both nationally and internationally. On the other hand, these restrictions have severe fall outs in businesses and livelihood in general. Therefore, it is an optimization process, exercised on a global scale, with multiple changing variables. Here we review the techniques and their effects on optimization or proposed optimizations of human mobility in different scales, carried out by data driven, machine learning and model approaches.

Understanding the geometry and kinematics of the broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is important to estimate black hole masses in AGN and study the accretion process. The technique of reverberation mapping (RM) has provided estimates of BLR size for more than 100 AGN now, however, the structure of the BLR has been studied for only a handful number of objects. Towards this, we investigated the geometry of the BLR for a large sample of 57 AGN using archival RM data. We performed systematic modeling of the continuum and emission line light curves using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method based on Bayesian statistics implemented in PBMAP (Parallel Bayesian code for reverberation-MAPping data) code to constrain BLR geometrical parameters and recover velocity integrated transfer function. We found that the recovered transfer functions have various shapes such as single-peaked, double-peaked and top-hat suggesting that AGN have very different BLR geometries. Our model lags are in general consistent with that estimated using the conventional cross-correlation methods. The BLR sizes obtained from our modeling approach is related to the luminosity with a slope of 0.583 (+/-) 0.026 and 0.471 (+/-) 0.084 based on H{\beta} and H{\alpha} lines, respectively. We found a non-linear response of emission line fluxes to the ionizing optical continuum for 93\% objects. We report results of the dust reverberation mapping (DRM) on the Seyfert 1 galaxy Z229-15 at z = 0.0273. Quasi-simultaneous photometric observations for a total of 48 epochs were acquired during the period 2017 July to 2018 December in B, V, J, H and Ks bands. The calculated spectral index ({\alpha}) between B and V bands for each epoch was used to correct for the accretion disk (AD) component present in the infrared light curves. The observed {\alpha} ranges between -0.99 and 1.03. Using cross correlation function analysis we found significant time delays between the optical V and the AD corrected J, H and Ks light curves. The lags in the rest frame of the source are 12.52 (+10.00/-9.55) days (between V and J), 15.63 (+5.05/-5.11) days (between V and H) and 20.36 (+5.82/-5.68) days (between V and Ks). Given the large error bars, these lags are consistent with each other. However, considering the lag between V and Ks bands to represent the inner edge of the dust torus, the torus in Z229-15 lies at a distance of 0.017 pc from the central ionizing continuum. This is smaller than that expected from the radius luminosity (R-L) relationship known from DRM. Using a constant {\alpha} = 0.1 to account for the AD component, as is normally done in DRM, the deduced radius (0.025 pc) lies close to the expected R-L relation. Quasars are ideal targets to use for astrometric calibration of large scale astronomical surveys as they have negligible proper motion and parallax. The forthcoming 4-m International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT) will survey the sky that covers a width of about 27 arcminute. To carry out astrometric calibration of the ILMT observations, we aimed to compile a list of quasars with accurate equatorial coordinates and falling in the ILMT stripe. Towards this, we cross-correlated all the quasars that are known till the present date with the sources in the Gaia-DR2 catalogue, as the Gaia-DR2 sources have position uncertainties as small as a few milli arcsec (mas). We present here the results of this cross-correlation which is a catalogue of 6738 quasars that is suitable for astrometric calibration of the ILMT fields. In this work, we present this quasar catalogue. This catalogue of quasars can also be used to study quasar variability over diverse time scales when the ILMT starts its observations. We introduce a version of the Minority Game where the total number of available choices is $D>2$, but the agents only have two available choices to switch. For all agents at an instant in any given choice, therefore, the other choice is distributed between the remaining $D-1$ options. This brings in the added complexity in reaching a state with the maximum resource utilization, in the sense that the game is essentially a set of MG that are coupled and played in parallel. We show that a stochastic strategy, used in the MG, works well here too. We discuss the limits in which the model reduces to other known models. Finally, we study an application of the model in the context of population movement between various states within a country during an ongoing epidemic. We show that the total infected population in the country could be as low as that achieved with a complete stoppage of inter-region movements for a prolonged period, provided that the agents instead follow the above mentioned stochastic strategy for their movement decisions between their two choices. The objective for an agent is to stay in the lower infected state between their two choices. We further show that it is the agents moving once between any two states, following the stochastic strategy, who are less likely to be infected than those not having (or not opting for) such a movement choice, when the risk of getting infected during the travel is not considered. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are high luminosity sources powered by accretion of matter onto SMBHs located at the centres of galaxies. The SMBH is surrounded by a broad emission line region (BLR) and a dusty torus. It is difficult to study the extent of the dusty torus as the central region of AGN is not resolvable using any conventional imaging techniques available today. Though, current IR interferometric techniques could in principle resolve the torus in nearby AGN, it is very expensive and limited to few bright and nearby AGN. A more feasible alternative to the interferometric technique to find the extent of the dusty torus in AGN is the technique of reverberation mapping (RM). REMAP (REverberation Mapping of AGN Program) is a long term photometric monitoring program being carried out using the 2 m HCT operated by the IIA, Bangalore, aimed at measuring the torus size in many AGN using the technique of RM. It involves accumulation of suitably long and well sampled light curves in the optical and near-infrared bands to measure the time delays between the light curves in different wavebands. These delays are used to determine the radius of the inner edge of the dust torus. REMAP was initiated in the year 2016 and since then about one hour of observing time once every five days (weather permitting) has been allocated at the HCT. Our initial sample carefully selected for this program consists of a total of 8 sources observable using the HCT. REMAP has resulted in the determination of the extent of the inner edge of the dusty torus in one AGN namely H0507+164. Data accumulation for the second source is completed and observations on the third source are going on. Blazars show optical and $\gamma$-ray flux variations that are generally correlated, although there are exceptions. Here we present anomalous behaviour seen in the blazar 3C 454.3 based on an analysis of quasi-simultaneous data at optical, UV, X-ray and $\gamma$-ray energies, spanning about 9 years from August 2008 to February 2017. We have identified four time intervals (epochs), A, B, D and E, when the source showed large-amplitude optical flares. In epochs A and B the optical and $\gamma$-ray flares are correlated, while in D and E corresponding flares in $\gamma$-rays are weak or absent. In epoch B the degree of optical polarization strongly correlates with changes in optical flux during a short-duration optical flare superimposed on one of long duration. In epoch E the optical flux and degree of polarization are anti-correlated during both the rising and declining phases of the optical flare. We carried out broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of the source for the flaring epochs A,B, D and E, and a quiescent epoch, C. Our SED modeling indicates that optical flares with absent or weak corresponding $\gamma$-ray flares in epochs D and E could arise from changes in a combination of parameters, such as the bulk Lorentz factor, magnetic field and electron energy density, or be due to changes in the location of the $\gamma$-ray emitting regions., Comment: accepted in mnras, 17 pages, 31 figures
