The current regulations on building envelope requirements are no longer related only to aspects of energy efficiency or guarantee of durability over time, but also to new performance scenarios concerning technological systems in relation to adaptation, mitigation and resilience to increasingly frequent extreme climate events. The research aims to analyse causes, effects and potential strategies to increase the resilience of the building envelope in case of extreme events, proposing solutions to reduce the consequences of the impact of flying debris on the building envelope. The study refers to the ongoing research, aimed at defining a methodology that supports interventions that improve the resilience of the built environment, in a world of climate change. While it is known how the construction sector contributes to climate change, on the other hand, we also know that climate change substantially affects the resilience of the built environment. This situation therefore calls for the development of methodologies and tools useful for controlling the different dynamics that define relationships and synergies. With the use of new indicators and adaptive design approaches in sensitive environmental areas, we aim to investigate both "current conditions" and the applicability of strategies and solutions aimed at managing climate change in urban space, employing a new set of criteria. In particular, it was considered important to direct efforts towards the definition of adaptive envelopes, capable of controlling the two-way relationships between buildings and their context which influence the urban microclimate interdependently. The expected results are the following: the definition of a repertoire of urban assets that "trigger" climate change phenomena; the development of new indicators, to detect conditions of climate change in contexts; the definition of envelope models (useful for retrofits) with "plant-sensor" integration logics, for a "smart" approach in the microclimate control of the built environment.
