End-to-end transformer-based trackers have achieved remarkable performance on most human-related datasets. However, training these trackers in heterogeneous scenarios poses significant challenges, including negative interference - where the model learns conflicting scene-specific parameters - and limited domain generalization, which often necessitates expensive fine-tuning to adapt the models to new domains. In response to these challenges, we introduce Parameter-efficient Scenario-specific Tracking Architecture (PASTA), a novel framework that combines Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) and Modular Deep Learning (MDL). Specifically, we define key scenario attributes (e.g, camera-viewpoint, lighting condition) and train specialized PEFT modules for each attribute. These expert modules are combined in parameter space, enabling systematic generalization to new domains without increasing inference time. Extensive experiments on MOTSynth, along with zero-shot evaluations on MOT17 and PersonPath22 demonstrate that a neural tracker built from carefully selected modules surpasses its monolithic counterpart. Traditional speech enhancement methods often oversimplify the task of restoration by focusing on a single type of distortion. Generative models that handle multiple distortions frequently struggle with phone reconstruction and high-frequency harmonics, leading to breathing and gasping artifacts that reduce the intelligibility of reconstructed speech. These models are also computationally demanding, and many solutions are restricted to producing outputs in the wide-band frequency range, which limits their suitability for professional applications. To address these challenges, we propose Hi-ResLDM, a novel generative model based on latent diffusion designed to remove multiple distortions and restore speech recordings to studio quality, sampled at 48kHz. We benchmark Hi-ResLDM against state-of-the-art methods that leverage GAN and Conditional Flow Matching (CFM) components, demonstrating superior performance in regenerating high-frequency-band details. Hi-ResLDM not only excels in non-instrusive metrics but is also consistently preferred in human evaluation and performs competitively on intrusive evaluations, making it ideal for high-resolution speech restoration.

Music timbre transfer is a challenging task that involves modifying the timbral characteristics of an audio signal while preserving its melodic structure. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on dual diffusion bridges, trained using the CocoChorales Dataset, which consists of unpaired monophonic single-instrument audio data. Each diffusion model is trained on a specific instrument with a Gaussian prior. During inference, a model is designated as the source model to map the input audio to its corresponding Gaussian prior, and another model is designated as the target model to reconstruct the target audio from this Gaussian prior, thereby facilitating timbre transfer. We compare our approach against existing unsupervised timbre transfer models such as VAEGAN and Gaussian Flow Bridges (GFB). Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves both better Fr\'echet Audio Distance (FAD) and melody preservation, as reflected by lower pitch distances (DPD) compared to VAEGAN and GFB. Additionally, we discover that the noise level from the Gaussian prior, $\sigma$, can be adjusted to control the degree of melody preservation and amount of timbre transferred.

We present COCOLA (Coherence-Oriented Contrastive Learning for Audio), a contrastive learning method for musical audio representations that captures the harmonic and rhythmic coherence between samples. Our method operates at the level of the stems composing music tracks and can input features obtained via Harmonic-Percussive Separation (HPS). COCOLA allows the objective evaluation of generative models for music accompaniment generation, which are difficult to benchmark with established metrics. In this regard, we evaluate recent music accompaniment generation models, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Accurate per-object distance estimation is crucial in safety-critical applications such as autonomous driving, surveillance, and robotics. Existing approaches rely on two scales: local information (i.e., the bounding box proportions) or global information, which encodes the semantics of the scene as well as the spatial relations with neighboring objects. However, these approaches may struggle with long-range objects and in the presence of strong occlusions or unusual visual patterns. In this respect, our work aims to strengthen both local and global cues. Our architecture -- named DistFormer -- builds upon three major components acting jointly: i) a robust context encoder extracting fine-grained per-object representations; ii) a masked encoder-decoder module exploiting self-supervision to promote the learning of useful per-object features; iii) a global refinement module that aggregates object representations and computes a joint, spatially-consistent estimation. To evaluate the effectiveness of DistFormer, we conduct experiments on the standard KITTI dataset and the large-scale NuScenes and MOTSynth datasets. Such datasets cover various indoor/outdoor environments, changing weather conditions, appearances, and camera viewpoints. Our comprehensive analysis shows that DistFormer outperforms existing methods. Moreover, we further delve into its generalization capabilities, showing its regularization benefits in zero-shot synth-to-real transfer.

The investigation of correlations in Monte Carlo power iteration has been long dominated by the question of generational correlations and their effects on the estimation of statistical uncertainties. More recently, there has been a growing interest in spatial correlations, prompted by the discovery of neutron clustering. Despite several attempts, a comprehensive framework concerning how Monte Carlo sampling strategies, population control and variance reduction methods affect the strength of such correlations is still lacking. In this work, we propose a set of global and local (i.e., space-dependent) tallies that can be used to characterize the impact of correlations. These tallies encompass the Shannon entropy, the pair distance, the normalized variance and the Feynman moment. In order to have a clean, yet fully meaningful setting, we carry out our analysis in a few homogeneous and heterogeneous benchmark problems of varying dominance ratio. Several classes of collision sampling strategies, population control and variance reduction techniques are tested, and their relative advantages and drawbacks are assessed with respect to the proposed tallies. The field of multi-object tracking has recently seen a renewed interest in the good old schema of tracking-by-detection, as its simplicity and strong priors spare it from the complex design and painful babysitting of tracking-by-attention approaches. In view of this, we aim at extending tracking-by-detection to multi-modal settings, where a comprehensive cost has to be computed from heterogeneous information e.g., 2D motion cues, visual appearance, and pose estimates. More precisely, we follow a case study where a rough estimate of 3D information is also available and must be merged with other traditional metrics (e.g., the IoU). To achieve that, recent approaches resort to either simple rules or complex heuristics to balance the contribution of each cost. However, i) they require careful tuning of tailored hyperparameters on a hold-out set, and ii) they imply these costs to be independent, which does not hold in reality. We address these issues by building upon an elegant probabilistic formulation, which considers the cost of a candidate association as the negative log-likelihood yielded by a deep density estimator, trained to model the conditional joint probability distribution of correct associations. Autoregressive decoding limits the efficiency of transformers for Machine Translation (MT). The community proposed specific network architectures and learning-based methods to solve this issue, which are expensive and require changes to the MT model, trading inference speed at the cost of the translation quality. In this paper, we propose to address the problem from the point of view of decoding algorithms, as a less explored but rather compelling direction. We propose to reframe the standard greedy autoregressive decoding of MT with a parallel formulation leveraging Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel fixed-point iteration methods for fast inference. This formulation allows to speed up existing models without training or modifications while retaining translation quality. We present three parallel decoding algorithms and test them on different languages and models showing how the parallelization introduces a speedup up to 38% w.r.t. the standard autoregressive decoding and nearly 2x when scaling the method on parallel resources. Finally, we introduce a decoding dependency graph visualizer (DDGviz) that let us see how the model has learned the conditional dependence between tokens and inspect the decoding procedure., Comment: Accepted at ACL 2023 main conference

In this work, we define a diffusion-based generative model capable of both music synthesis and source separation by learning the score of the joint probability density of sources sharing a context. Alongside the classic total inference tasks (i.e., generating a mixture, separating the sources), we also introduce and experiment on the partial generation task of source imputation, where we generate a subset of the sources given the others (e.g., play a piano track that goes well with the drums). Additionally, we introduce a novel inference method for the separation task based on Dirac likelihood functions. We train our model on Slakh2100, a standard dataset for musical source separation, provide qualitative results in the generation settings, and showcase competitive quantitative results in the source separation setting. Autoregressive models have achieved impressive results over a wide range of domains in terms of generation quality and downstream task performance. In the continuous domain, a key factor behind this success is the usage of quantized latent spaces (e.g., obtained via VQ-VAE autoencoders), which allow for dimensionality reduction and faster inference times. However, using existing pre-trained models to perform new non-trivial tasks is difficult since it requires additional fine-tuning or extensive training to elicit prompting. This paper introduces LASS as a way to perform vector-quantized Latent Autoregressive Source Separation (i.e., de-mixing an input signal into its constituent sources) without requiring additional gradient-based optimization or modifications of existing models. Our separation method relies on the Bayesian formulation in which the autoregressive models are the priors, and a discrete (non-parametric) likelihood function is constructed by performing frequency counts over latent sums of addend tokens. We test our method on images and audio with several sampling strategies (e.g., ancestral, beam search) showing competitive results with existing approaches in terms of separation quality while offering at the same time significant speedups in terms of inference time and scalability to higher dimensional data., Comment: Accepted to AAAI 2023

Neutron noise in nuclear power reactors refers to the small fluctuations around the average neutron flux at steady state resulting from time-dependent perturbations inside the core. The neutron noise equations in the frequency domain can be solved using Monte Carlo simulation codes, which are capable of obtaining reference solutions involving almost no approximations, but are hindered by severe issues affecting the statistical convergence: the simultaneous presence of positive and negative particles, which is required by the nature of the complex noise equations, leads to catastrophically large variance in the tallies. In this work, we consider the important case of neutron noise problems induced by mechanical vibrations. First, we derive a new exact sampling strategy for the noise source. Then, building upon our previous findings in other contexts, we show that weight cancellation methods can be highly beneficial in dealing with the presence of negative weights, enabling extremely large gains in the figure of merit. We successfully demonstrate our results on a benchmark configuration consisting of a fuel assembly with a vibrating pin and we discuss possible pathways for further improvements., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

The Monte Carlo method is often used to simulate systems which can be modeled by random walks. In order to calculate observables, in many implementations the "walkers" carry a statistical weight which is generally assumed to be positive. Some random walk simulations, however, may require walkers to have positive or negative weights: it has been shown that the presence of a mixture of positive and negative weights can impede the statistical convergence, and special weight-cancellation techniques must be adopted in order to overcome these issues. In a recent work we demonstrated the usefulness of one such method, exact regional weight cancellation, to solve eigenvalue problems in nuclear reactor physics in three spatial dimensions. The method previously exhibited had several limitations (including multi-group transport and isotropic scattering) and needed homogeneous cuboid cancellation regions. In this paper we lift the previous limitations, in view of applying exact regional cancellation to more realistic continuous-energy neutron transport problems. This extended regional cancellation framework is used to optimize the efficiency of the weight cancellation. Understanding the statistical properties of a collection of individuals subject to random displacements and birth-and-death events is key to several applications in physics and life sciences, encompassing the diagnostic of nuclear reactors and the analysis of epidemic patterns. Previous investigations of the critical regime, where births and deaths balance on average, have shown that highly non-Poissonian fluctuations might occur in the population, leading to spontaneous spatial clustering, and eventually to a critical catastrophe, where fluctuations can result in the extinction of the population. A milder behaviour is observed when the population size is kept constant: thefluctuations asymptotically level off and the critical catastrophe is averted. In this paper, we shall extend these results by considering the broader class of models with prompt and delayed birth-and-death events, which mimic the presence of precursors in nuclear reactor physics or incubation inepidemics. We shall consider models with and without population control mechanisms. The marine ecosystem is changing at an alarming rate, exhibiting biodiversity loss and the migration of tropical species to temperate basins. Monitoring the underwater environments and their inhabitants is of fundamental importance to understand the evolution of these systems and implement safeguard policies. However, assessing and tracking biodiversity is often a complex task, especially in large and uncontrolled environments, such as the oceans. One of the most popular and effective methods for monitoring marine biodiversity is passive acoustics monitoring (PAM), which employs hydrophones to capture underwater sound. Many aquatic animals produce sounds characteristic of their own species; these signals travel efficiently underwater and can be detected even at great distances. Furthermore, modern technologies are becoming more and more convenient and precise, allowing for very accurate and careful data acquisition. To date, audio captured with PAM devices is frequently manually processed by marine biologists and interpreted with traditional signal processing techniques for the detection of animal vocalizations. This is a challenging task, as PAM recordings are often over long periods of time. Moreover, one of the causes of biodiversity loss is sound pollution; in data obtained from regions with loud anthropic noise, it is hard to separate the artificial from the fish sound manually. Nowadays, machine learning and, in particular, deep learning represents the state of the art for processing audio signals. Specifically, sound separation networks are able to identify and separate human voices and musical instruments. In this work, we show that the same techniques can be successfully used to automatically extract fish vocalizations in PAM recordings, opening up the possibility for biodiversity monitoring at a large scale.

State of the art audio source separation models rely on supervised data-driven approaches, which can be expensive in terms of labeling resources. On the other hand, approaches for training these models without any direct supervision are typically high-demanding in terms of memory and time requirements, and remain impractical to be used at inference time. We aim to tackle these limitations by proposing a simple yet effective unsupervised separation algorithm, which operates directly on a latent representation of time-domain signals. Our algorithm relies on deep Bayesian priors in the form of pre-trained autoregressive networks to model the probability distributions of each source. We leverage the low cardinality of the discrete latent space, trained with a novel loss term imposing a precise arithmetic structure on it, to perform exact Bayesian inference without relying on an approximation strategy.
