Abstract

Mainland France is part of a plate interior with a strong structural heritage, undergoing a low rate of deformation, where destructive earthquakes can nevertheless occur. In this paper, we emphasize that the knowledge of active faults is still largely fragmentary, and that significant efforts are needed to generate robust data, in particular on the numerous faults, that still lack any study. This is the aim of the “Failles ACTives France” (FACT) axis launched in the framework of the Transverse Seismicity Action (ATS) of the Resif-Epos consortium. We present some recent investigations carried out along suspected active faults in mountainous areas, their forelands and remote lowlands, which implement new approaches and new tools, and allow characterizing their Quaternary activity.

Abstract

On November 11, 2019, a M$_{\mathrm{w}}$ 4.9 earthquake hit the region close to Montelimar (lower Rhône Valley, France), on the eastern margin of the Massif Central close to the external part of the Alps. Occuring in a moderate seismicity area, this earthquake is remarkable for its very shallow focal depth (between 1 and 3 km), its magnitude, and the moderate to large damages it produced in several villages. InSAR interferograms indicated a shallow rupture about 4 km long reaching the surface and the reactivation of the ancient NE–SW La Rouvière normal fault in reverse faulting in agreement with the present-day E–W compressional tectonics. The peculiarity of this earthquake together with a poor coverage of the epicentral region by permanent seismological and geodetic stations triggered the mobilisation of the French post-seismic unit and the broad French scientific community from various institutions, with the deployment of geophysical instruments (seismological and geodesic stations), geological field surveys, and field evaluation of the intensity of the earthquake. Within 7 days after the mainshock, 47 seismological stations were deployed in the epicentral area to improve the Le Teil aftershocks locations relative to the French permanent seismological network (RESIF), monitor the temporal and spatial evolution of microearthquakes close to the fault plane and temporal evolution of the seismic response of 3 damaged historical buildings, and to study suspected site effects and their influence in the distribution of seismic damage. This seismological dataset, completed by data owned by different institutions, was integrated in a homogeneous archive and distributed through FDSN web services by the RESIF data center. This dataset, together with observations of surface rupture evidences, geologic, geodetic and satellite data, will help to unravel the causes and rupture mechanism of this earthquake, and contribute to account in seismic hazard assessment for earthquakes along the major regional Cévenne fault system in a context of present-day compressional tectonics.

Localisés à distance des grandes limites de plaques lithosphériques, les domaines intraplaques présentent de faibles vitesses de déformation géologique, se traduisant par des niveaux de sismicité faibles à modérés, avec des temps de retour longs entre deux séismes significatifs. Dans ces régions, les processus de surface sont plus rapides que les processus tectoniques et tendent à effacer les éventuelles traces de rupture laissées en surface par des séismes majeurs du passé. L’estimation de l’activité des failles dans de tels contextes nécessite la mise en œuvre d’une approche pluridisciplinaire combinant géophysique, géologie et paléosismologie. Nous présentons ici l’approche développée par EDF, dans le cadre de ses études d’aléa sismique, pour améliorer la connaissance des failles en France métropolitaine, en se focalisant sur l’utilisation de la sismique réflexion (imagerie) à différentes échelles. Les lignes sismiques de Haute Résolution (HR ; i.e. sismique profonde de type pétrolière) permettent d’estimer la localisation et la géométrie des failles en profondeur, ainsi que leur histoire cinématique. La sismique ultra haute résolution en ondes S (UHRS) donne quant à elle une information sur la localisation des failles en très proche surface et permet de localiser d’éventuelles tranchées paléosismologiques visant à analyser l’activité des failles.

Abstract

International audience; Apatite fission-track and (U-Th)/He thermochronometry have been applied to investigate the long-term topographic evolution of the French Massif Central. Located in the foreland domain of the Alpine and Pyrenean mountain belts, the French Massif Central presents enigmatic topographic features, reaching ~1700 m a.s.l. and ~1000 m of relief, that did not originate from Alpine compressional nor from extensional tectonics. The age of the present-day topography, the timing of its formation, and the underlying processes remain debated. Our new thermochronological data come from the eastern flank of the massif, where sampling profiles run from the high-elevation region down to the Rhône river valley floor with a total elevation profile of 1200 m. Age-elevation relationships, mean track-length distributions and thermal modeling indicate a two-steps cooling history: (i) a first exhumation event, already detected through previously-published thermochronology data, with an onset time during Mid-Cretaceous; and interestingly (ii) a more recent Cenozoic phase that is resolved from our data, with a likely post-Eocene onset. This second erosional event is associated with relief formation and valley incision probably induced by a long wavelength domal uplift supported by mantle upwelling. Abstract

This poster presents the study, based on GPS data, of the share of post-glacial rebound in the uplift of the Western Alps. It was presented at the Résif Scientific and Technical Meetings held in Biarritz in November 2019. Résif is a national research infrastructure dedicated to the observation and understanding of the Earth's internal structure and dynamics. Résif is based on high technology observation networks, composed of seismological, geodetic and gravimetric instruments deployed in a dense manner throughout the French territory. The data collected allow the study of ground deformation, surface and deep structures, local and global seismicity and natural hazards, particularly seismic, on the French territory with a high spatio-temporal resolution. Résif is integrated into the European (EPOS - European Plate Observing System) and worldwide instruments that allow to image the Earth's interior in its entirety and to study many natural phenomena.; Ce poster présente l'étude, à partir de données GPS, de la part du rebond post-glaciaire dans le soulèvement des Alpes occidentales. Il a été présenté aux Rencontres scientifiques et techniques Résif qui se sont déroulées à Biarritz en novembre 2019. Résif est une infrastructure de recherche nationale dédiée à l’observation et la compréhension de la structure et de la dynamique Terre interne. Résif se base sur des réseaux d’observation de haut niveau technologique, composés d’instruments sismologiques, géodésiques et gravimétriques déployés de manière dense sur tout le territoire français. Les données recueillies permettent d’étudier avec une haute résolution spatio-temporelle la déformation du sol, les structures superficielles et profondes, la sismicité à l’échelle locale et globale et les aléas naturels, et plus particulièrement sismiques, sur le territoire français. Résif s’intègre aux dispositifs européens (EPOS - European Plate Observing System) et mondiaux d’instruments permettant d’imager l’intérieur de la Terre dans sa globalité et d’étudier de nombreux phénomènes naturels.

23. Geometry and tectonic history of the Northeastern Cévennes Fault System (Southeast Basin, France) : new insights from deep seismic reflection profiles

Abstract

Following the Mw4.9 Le Teil surface rupture earthquake that occurred on the north-eastern Cévennes fault system (NCFS) in France, several investigations were carried out to understand the origin of the earthquake rupture. A few studies performed local modeling of the NCFS structures in three dimensions integrating the rheology of the sedimentary layers within the hypocenter zone. However, the geometry of the NCFS at the scale of the Southeast French Basin is poorly constrained and it remains difficult to locate its trace beneath the Quaternary sediments of the Rhône river valley. To address this issue, Électricité de France (EDF) carried out a deep reflection seismic survey along the NCFS. This new set of seismic profiles was interpreted using a geological data base including surface data, well data, and previous seismic data that were reprocessed. The resulting 3D structural model allows us to reconstruct a polyphase geological history during the past 320 Ma, which we divide into three major tectonic phases. We show that all structures in the basin in the study area were initiated as normal faults during the Lower Jurassic and the Lower Cretaceous. During the Upper Cretaceous, these structures were reactivated, acting as a major transfer fault zone during the Pyrenean shortening phase, then as normal faults during the Oligocene extension. The morphology and faults at the top-Carboniferous basin initiated during the Lower Jurassic strongly shaped the final structure of the NCFS during the subsequent tectonic phases. Our new results allow updating the historical geology of the Vivaro-Cévenol region and our knowledge about the structures that have affected the Southeast Basin since the Mesozoic. In the context of the Le Teil earthquake, our new structural model provides important constraints for continuing paleoseismological works that will better assess the seismic hazard in this region.

Abstract

Identifying the driving mechanisms of soft‐sediment deformation in the geological record is the subject of debate. Thawing of ice‐rich clayey silt above permafrost was proved experimentally to be among the processes capable of triggering deformation. However, previous work has failed so far to reproduce similar structures in sand. This study investigates fluidization and intrusive ice formation from soil models in the laboratory. Experimental conditions reproduce the growth of ice‐cored mounds caused by pore water pressure increase during freeze‐back of sand in a permafrost context. Excess pore water pressure causes hydraulic fracturing and the development of water lenses beneath the freezing front. Later freezing of the water lenses generates intrusive ice. The main structures consist of sand dykes and sills formed when the increase in pore water pressure exceeds a critical threshold, and soft‐sediment deformations induced by subsidence during ice melt. The combination of processes has resulted in diapir‐like structures. The experimental structures are similar to those described in Pleistocene sites from France. These processes constitute a credible alternative to the seismic hypothesis evoked to explain soft‐sediment deformation structures in other European regions subjected to Pleistocene cold climates. Abstract

The SISFRANCE database aims to collect and interpret archives relating the historical seismicity in metropolitan France. The database presently contains some 12,500 documents that allow to define 108,832 macroseismic data points, for a total of 6427 events, of which 5743 can be qualified as real earthquakes. Although half of these events are and will probably remain poorly known, completing our knowledge of historical earthquakes remains a fundamental element for the definition of seismic hazard and the understanding of seismicity in France and low to moderate seismicity regions in general. The first aim of this paper is to explain the state of the art of the database and remind end users how the limits introduced by the necessary interpretation of archival data are translated into quality factors that should be carefully considered when using such data for seismotectonic and seismic hazard purposes.Originally built as part of the necessary datasets to define the seismic hazard for nuclear facilities, the SISFRANCE database is the result of 40 years of work within a consortium bringing together the French civil nuclear operator (EDF), the French geological survey (BRGM), and the French institute of nuclear safety (IRSN). SISFRANCE is also the heir to archival research carried out since the second half of the 19th century, thus constituting the richest collection of data related to historical seismicity in France. The second aim of this paper is to explain to end users the current state of archival research within the SISFRANCE consortium, present avenues for future research strategies, and list potential improvements of the database structure.Archival research within the SISFRANCE consortium, no longer carried out by a dedicated historian since 2018, is presently being pursued by engaging individual researchers or academics, focusing research on specific archives and regions, as well as by developing data-mining techniques to exploit the increasing wealth of accessible numerical archives. Given the new impetus of French governmental research agencies that encourage transdisciplinarity research, SISFRANCE is also pursuing the idea of further engaging the academic community of historians and seismologists, presently greatly underrepresented in the field of historical seismicity in spite of the importance of this data, fundamental for any seismotectonic and seismic hazard study in France.

27. New insights on the interseismic active deformation along the North Ecuadorian–South Colombian (NESC) margin

Abstract

The North Ecuadorian–South Colombian subduction zone was the site of the 1906 Mw 8.8 megathrust earthquake. This main shock was followed by three large events in 1942, 1958, and 1979 whose rupture zones were located within the 500 km long 1906 rupture area. A combined onshore and offshore temporary seismic network covering from the trench to the Andes was deployed during 3 months in the area of large earthquakes, in order to obtain a detailed knowledge of the seismic background activity. Resulting earthquakes location and mechanisms bring new insights on interseismic active deformation distribution in the three main tectonic units of the margin, namely, the Interplate Seismogenic Zone, the fore-arc region which is part of the North Andean Block and the downgoing oceanic Nazca plate. The interplate seismic activity presents along strike variations, suggesting that the seismicity and the associated stress buildup along the plate interface depend on the time elapsed since the last large earthquakes. According to our results, the updip and downdip limits of the seismogenic zone appear to be located at 12 and 30 km depth, respectively. Shallow to intermediate depth seismicity indicates a slab dip angle of ≈25°. North of the Carnegie Ridge, the Wadati-Benioff plane is defined beneath the fore arc down to ≈100 km depth. Facing the ridge, the Wadati-Benioff plane extends beneath the Andes, down to ≈140 km depth. This observation conflicts with the hypothesis of the presence of a flat slab at a depth of 100 km facing the ridge. In the overlying fore-arc region, the crustal seismicity occurs down to 40 km depth and is mainly concentrated in a roughly NW-SE 100 km wide stripe stretching from the coast, at about 1°N, to the Andes. The location of this active deformation stripe coincides with observed tectonic segmentation of the coastal domain as evidenced by the presence of an uplifting segment to the south and a subsiding segment to the north of the stripe. La localización exacta de los terremotos costa afuera y en tierra es un desafío a largo plazo para la comunidad científica, y este problema es de particular interés en las regiones de subducción como el margen activo de Ecuador-Colombia, donde grandes terremotos y tsunamis han ocurrido. En el norte de Ecuador, la sismicidad no está bien precisada debido a la ausencia de registros sísmicos entre la costa y los Andes. Por lo tanto, algunos problemas importantes, como la geometría del slab, no están resueltos aún. Nosotros proponemos aquí estudiar la sismicidad de la región de Esmeraldas (norte de Ecuador), usando datos de dos experimentos sismológicos locales, SUBLIME y ESMERALDAS, llevados a cabo en esta parte de Ecuador. Estos fueron conducidos respectivamente en 1998 y 2005, y durante ambos experimentos, estaciones en tierra y OBS (Sismómetros de Fondo Oceánico) fueron desplegados simultáneamente. Las redes de SUBLIME y ESMERALDAS cubrieron juntas una gran área, extendiéndose desde el margen hasta la Cordillera. Hemos localizado eventos registrados usando diferentes modelos de velocidad de acuerdo a las áreas geológicas y topográficas. Los modelos de velocidad usados fueron derivados a partir de perfiles sísmicos de gran ángulo a través del margen norte ecuatoriano, y de un modelo de velocidad terrestre global. Nuestros resultados muestran que el Límite Superior pendiente arriba (UdL) de la zona sismogénica está localizado a una profundidad superficial de ~10 Km, 40 Km al Este de la Fosa. Utlizando resultados anteriores de sísmica activa y nuestras localizaciones, determinamos una inclinación del slab de 10° al nivel de la fosa que aumenta a 25°-30° en la parte profunda hasta 120km de profundidad por debajo de la Cordillera Occidental. Hemos también notado la presencia de una intensa y densa deformación en la parte superior, desde los 40Km al Este de la Fosa hasta la Cordillera. El conocimiento de los patrones de sismicidad en las zonas de subducción, como la local, [EN] Accurate location of offshore and onshore earthquakes is a long-time challenge in the scientific community and this problem is of particular interest in subduction regions like the active Ecuador Colombian margin, where great earthquakes and tsunamis occurred. In the north of Ecuador, the seismicity is not well constrained because of a lack of recorded seismicity between the coast and the Andes. Therefore, some major problems, like geometry of the slab, are not resolved yet. We propose here to study the seismicity of the Esmeraldas region (north Ecuador), using data of two local seismological experiments, SUBLIME and ESMERALDAS, carried out in this part of Ecuador. They were conducted respectively in 1998 and in 2005 and during both experiments, land stations and OBSs (Ocean bottom seismometers) were deployed simultaneously. Together SUBLIME and ESMERALDAS networks cover a large area, stretching from the margin up to the Cordillera. We locate recorded events using different velocity models according to geological and topographical areas. The velocity models used were derived from wide-angle seismic profiles across the north Ecuadorian margin, and from a global earth velocity model. Our results show that the Updip Limit (UdL) of the seismogenic zone is located at a shallow ~10 km depth, 40 km east of the trench. Using active seismic tomography of previous study and our location results we show a 10° dipping slab in the trench area, increasing to 25°-30° down to 120km depth beneath the western Cordillera. We also note the presence of an intensive thick deformation in the upper, from 40km east of the trench until the cordillera. Knowledge of seismicity patterns in subduction zones, like the UdL location, is a key parameter for seismic and tsunami risk determination
