PURPOSE: The goal of the paper is to present the research results on empirical verification of a model of relationships between, the premises of organizational boundaries change, outsourcing`s scope and maturity, outsourcing`s effectiveness and the level of business model modification., DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The research sample was purposive and included 281 Polish companies. The main research tool was a survey questionnaire, supported by the CATI technique. To verify the model, the Structural Equations Modelling (SEM) method was used. The research was based on the Business Model Canvas framework, as well as author`s concept of outsourcing maturity characteristics., FINDINGS: The results confirmed the existence of relationships between all the phenomena included within the research model, the only exception being the impact of outsourcing scope on its effectiveness. Specifically, the research proved the impact of outsourcing effectiveness on the level of business model changes in surveyed enterprises, as well as a strong relationship between outsourcing maturity and its effectiveness. The research enabled to identify outsourcing not only as a tool of organizational boundaries change, but also as one of the key methods of business model adaptation and alteration., PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The research indicates the need for extending the field of analysing outsourcing`s impact on the shape of the business model to adjust the scope and the outsourcing process to changes taking place in the enterprise, as well as its environment., ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The research can be used to develop future research directions, such as a more detailed explanation of the way outsourcing impacts the process of business model innovation., The project was financed by the funds granted by National Science Centre based on the decision no. Αν και ιστορικά ο κλάδος της υγείας ήταν λιγότερο ευάλωτος σε περιόδους οικονομικής ύφεσης σε σύγκριση με άλλους τομείς της οικονομίας, λόγω της ανελαστικής ζήτησης, τα αποτελέσματα της παρούσας οικονομικής κρίσης αντανακλώνται ήδη και σε αυτόν τον κλάδο. Καθώς η οικονομική κρίση είναι πλέον πραγματικότητα, η βιομηχανία της υγείας θα πρέπει να αναζητήσει τρόπους προκειμένου να επιτευχθεί αποδοτικότητα σε βάθος χρόνου, παρά τις δύσκολες συνθήκες που επικρατούν στην αγορά. Επιπρόσθετα, γεγονός αποτελεί ότι ο κλάδος της υγείας αντιμετωπίζει εξωτερικές πιέσεις που τον αναγκάζουν να αντιδράσει ενώ απαιτούν να προετοιμαστεί για τη νέα οικονομική πραγματικότητα με σκοπό να καταστεί βιώσιμος και επικερδής. Στο πλαίσιο αυτής της προετοιμασίας, κρίνεται αναγκαία η άμεση παρέμβαση των υψηλόβαθμων στελεχών που θα υλοποιήσουν καινοτόμες ιδέες. Σκοπός της παρούσας διπλωματικής εργασίας είναι η μελέτη των δυνατοτήτων της στρατηγικής διοίκησης καινοτομίας με σκοπό την υπέρβαση της υπάρχουσας προβληματικής κατάστασης στον κλάδο της υγείας. Για την συλλογή των αναγκαίων στοιχείων διενεργήθηκε έρευνα πεδίου στο Ωνάσειο Καρδιοχειρουργικό Κέντρο με συνεντεύξεις βασισμένες σε ημιδομημένο ερωτηματολόγιο. Οι συνεντεύξεις έγιναν με υψηλόβαθμα στελέχη, αλλά και με περιορισμένο αριθμό νοσηλευτικού προσωπικού. Η μελέτη περίπτωσης στο Ωνάσειο Καρδιοχειρουργικό Κέντρο διενεργήθηκε, εκτός των άλλων, με σκοπό τον προσδιορισμό του εάν η συγκεκριμένη νοσοκομειακή μονάδα ακολουθεί πρακτικές στρατηγικού μάνατζμεντ και, στην περίπτωση που τις χρησιμοποιεί, αναλύονται οι λόγοι που κρίνουν απαραίτητη την εφαρμογή τους. Η μελέτη ολοκληρώνεται με τον τρόπο που το Ωνάσειο Καρδιοχειρουργικό Κέντρο - και κατ' επέκταση ένας μη-κερδοσκοπικός ελληνικός οργανισμός - αντιμετωπίζει την ανταγωνιστικότητα στον κλάδο του, τις νέες απαιτήσεις και την αναμφίβολα δύσκολη οικονομική κατάσταση., Although historically the health sector was less vulnerable to economic downturns compared with other industries, the results of this financial crisis is already reflected in this industry. As the economic crisis continues, the health industry should seek ways to achieve profitability in the long term, despite the difficult market conditions. Additionally, it is a fact that the health sector is facing external pressures that forces it to react, while it makes it necessary to prepare for the new economic reality in order to become viable and profitable. As part of this preparation, it is necessary the direct intervention of all levels of management who will implement strategic innovative ideas. The main purpose of this thesis is to study the potentials of the strategic innovation management to overcome the existing crisis that has affected the health industry as well. To collect the necessary data, a field research was conducted in the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center where interviews took place based on a semi structured questionnaire addressed to senior executives and a limited number of nursing staff. The case study at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center was carried out, among others, in order to identify if the specific hospital unit is following strategic management practices; in case those are used, the reasons for their implementation are analyzed further. The study concludes with the way which the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, and thus a non-profit Greek organization is facing the competition and the new requirements demanded in the context of an undoubtedly difficult economic situation.
