We employed inelastic neutron scattering (INS), specific heat, and magnetization analysis to study the magnetism in a synthetic polymorph of the quasi-two-dimensional natural metal-organic framework material, stepanovite NaMgFe(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3\cdot$9H$_2$O. No long-range magnetic order can be observed down to 0.5 K. The INS spectra show two dispersionless excitations at energy transfer 0.028(1) and 0.050(1) meV at base temperature, which are derived from the magnetic transitions between zero-field splitting (ZFS) of $S$ = 5/2 ground state multiplets of Fe$^{3+}$ ion. Further analysis of the INS results shows that the Fe$^{3+}$ ion has an easy-axis anisotropy with axial ZFS parameter $D$ = $-$0.0128(5) meV and rhombic parameter $E$ = 0.0014(5) meV. The upward behavior at zero field and Schottky-like peak under magnetic field of the low-temperature magnetic specific heat further support the INS results. When water molecules are confined to nanoscale spacings, such as in the nanometer size pores of activated carbon fiber (ACF), their freezing point gets suppressed down to very low temperatures ($\sim$ 150 K), leading to a metastable liquid state with remarkable physical properties. We have investigated the ambient pressure diffusive dynamics of water in microporous Kynol\texttrademark ACF-10 (average pore size $\sim$11.6 {\AA}, with primarily slit-like pores) from temperature $T=$ 280 K in its stable liquid state down to $T=$ 230 K into the metastable supercooled phase. The observed characteristic relaxation times and diffusion coefficients are found to be respectively higher and lower than those in bulk water, indicating a slowing down of the water mobility with decreasing temperature. The observed temperature-dependent average relaxation time $<\tau>$ when compared to previous findings indicate that it is the size of the confining pores - not their shape - that primarily affects the dynamics of water for pore sizes larger than 10 {\AA}. The experimental observations are compared to complementary molecular dynamics simulations of a model system, in which we studied the diffusion of water within the 11.6 {\AA} gap of two parallel graphene sheets. We find generally a reasonable agreement between the observed and calculated relaxation times at the low momentum transfer $Q$ ($Q\le 0.9$ \AA${^{-1}}$). At high $Q$ however, where localized dynamics becomes relevant, this ideal system does not satisfactorily reproduce the measurements. The best agreement is obtained for the diffusion parameter $D$ associated with the hydrogen-site when a representative stretched exponential function, rather than the standard bi-modal exponential model, is used to parameterize the self-correlation function $I(Q,t)$., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

We present a pressure dependence study of the dynamics of lysozyme protein powder immersed in deuterated $\alpha$,$\alpha$-trehalose environment via quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). The goal is to assess the baro-protective benefits of trehalose on bio-molecules by comparing the findings with those of a trehalose-free reference study. While the mean-square displacement of the trehalose-free protein (hydrated to $d_{D_2O}\simeq$40 w\%) as a whole, is reduced by increasing pressure, the actual observable relaxation dynamics in the pico-(ps) to nano-seconds (ns) time range remains largely unaffected by pressure - up to the maximum investigated pressure of 2.78(2) Kbar. Our observation is independent of whether or not the protein is mixed with the deuterated sugar. This suggests that the hydrated protein's conformational states at atmospheric pressure remain unaltered by hydrostatic pressures, below 2.78 Kbar. We also found the QENS response to be totally recoverable after ambient pressure conditions are restored. Circular dichroism and neutron diffraction measurements confirm that the protein structural integrity is conserved and remains intact, after pressure is released. We observe however a clear narrowing of the quasi-elastic neutron (QENS) response as the temperature is decreased from 290 K to 230 K in both cases, which we parametrize using the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) stretched exponential model. Only the fraction of protons that are immobile on the accessible time window of the instrument, referred to as the elastic incoherent structure factor or (EISF) is observably sensitive to pressure, increasing only marginally but systematically with increasing pressure., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures

The relaxational dynamics in glass-forming glycerol and glycerol mixed with LiCl is in-vestigated using different neutron scattering techniques. The performed neutron spin-echo experiments, which extend up to relatively long relaxation-time scales of the order of 10 ns, should allow for the detection of contributions from the so-called excess wing. This phenomenon, whose microscopic origin is controversially discussed, arises in a variety of glass formers and, until now, was almost exclusively investigated by dielectric spectros-copy and light scattering. Here we show that the relaxational process causing the excess wing also can be detected by neutron scattering, which directly couples to density fluctua-tions., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The effects of static electric field on the dynamics of lysozyme and its hydration water have been investigated by means of incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). Measurements were performed on lysozyme samples, hydrated respectively with heavy water (D2O) to capture the protein dynamics, and with light water (H2O), to probe the dynamics of the hydration shell, in the temperature range from 210 $<$ T $<$ 260 K. The hydration fraction in both cases was about $\sim$ 0.38 gram of water per gram of dry protein. The field strengths investigated were respectively 0 kV/mm and 2 kV/mm (2 10$^6$ V/m) for the protein hydrated with D2O and 0 kV and 1 kV/mm for the H2O hydrated counterpart. While the overall internal protons dynamics of the protein appears to be unaffected by the application of electric field up to 2 kV/mm, likely due to the stronger intra-molecular interactions, there is also no appreciable quantitative enhancement of the diffusive dynamics of the hydration water, as would be anticipated based on our recent observations in water confined in silica pores under field values of 2.5 kV/mm. This may be due to the difference in surface interactions between water and the two adsorption hosts (silica and protein), or to the existence of a critical threshold field value Ec $\sim$ 2-3 kV/mm for increased molecular diffusion, for which electrical breakdown is a limitation for our sample., Comment: 12 Pages, 5 Figures, submitted to Journal of Biological Physics

We report the diffusion of water molecules confined in the pores of folded silica materials (FSM-12 with average pore diameter of $\sim$ 16 \AA), measured by means of quasielastic neutron scattering using the cold neutron chopper spectrometer (CNCS). The goal is to investigate the effect of electric field on the previously observed fast component of nano-confined water. The measurements were taken at temperatures between 220 K and 245 K, and at two electric field values, 0 kV/mm and 2 kV/mm. We report a study of the effects of pressure on the diffusivity of water molecules confined in single- wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) with average mean pore diameter of 16 Angstroms. The measurements were carried out using high-resolution neutron scattering, over the temperature range 220 < T < 260 K, and at two pressure conditions: ambient and elevated pressure. The high pressure data were collected at constant volume on cooling, with P varying from 1.92 kbar at temperature T = 260 K to 1.85 kbar at T = 220 K. Analysis of the observed dynamic structure factor S(Q, E) reveals the presence of two relaxation processes, a faster diffusion component (FC) associated with the motion of "caged" or restricted molecules, and a slower component arising from the free water molecules diffusing within the SWNT matrix. While the temperature dependence of the slow relaxation time exhibits a Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law and is non-Arrhenius in nature, the faster component follows an Arrhenius exponential law at both pressure conditions. The application of pressure remarkably slows down the overall molecular dynamics, in agreement with previous observations, but most notably affects the slow relaxation. We report the structural and magnetic properties of a new class of cobaltates with the chemical formula (BaSr)4-xLa2xCo4O15 (x = 0, 0.5 and 1). These compounds crystallize in a hexagonal structure in which cobalt ions are distributed among two distinct crystallographic sites with different oxygen coordination. Three Co-O tetrahedra and one octahedron are linked by shared oxygen atoms to form Co4O15 clusters, which are packed together into a honeycomb-like network. Partial substitution of Sr and/or Ba atoms by La allows one to adjust the degree of Co valence mixing, but all compositions remain subject to a random distribution of charge. Magnetic susceptibility together with neutron scattering measurements reveal that all studied specimens are characterized by competing ferro- and antiferro-magnetic exchange interactions that give rise to a three dimensional Heisenberg spin-glass state. Neutron spectroscopy shows a clear trend of slowing down of spin-dynamics upon increasing La concentration, suggesting a reduction in charge randomness in the doped samples.

We report measurements of the neutron diffuse scattering in a single crystal of the relaxor ferroelectric material 95.5%Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-4.5%PbTiO3 (PZN-4.5%PT). We show that the diffuse scattering at high temperatures has a quasielastic component with energy width $\agt$ 0.1 meV. On cooling the total diffuse scattering intensity increases, but the intensity and the energy width of the quasielastic component gradually diminish. At 50 K the diffuse scattering is completely static (i.e.the energy width lies within the limits of our instrumental resolution). This suggests that the dynamics of the short-range correlated atomic displacements associated with the diffuse scattering freeze at low temperature. We find that this depends on the wave vector q as the quasielastic diffuse scattering intensities associated with <001> (T1-type) and <110> (T2-type) atomic displacements vary differently with temperature and electric field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering in variable magnetic field and high-field magnetization measurements, at the milikelvin temperature range, were performed to gain insight into the low-energy magnetic excitation spectrum and the field-induced level crossings in the molecular spin cluster \{Cr$_8$\}-cubane. These complementary techniques provide consistent estimates of the lowest level-crossing field. The overall features of the experimental data are explained using an isotropic Heisenberg model, based on three distinct exchange interactions linking the eight Cr$^{\text{III}}$ paramagnetic centers (spins $s = 3/2$), that is supplemented with a relatively large molecular magnetic anisotropy term for the lowest S=1 multiplet. It is noted that the existence of the anisotropy is clearly evident from the magnetic field dependence of the excitations in the INS measurements, while the magnetization measurements are not sensitive to its effects.

We report inelastic and elastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements of polycrystalline sodium ruthenate (Na$_3$RuO$_4$). Previous work suggests this material consists of isolated tetramers of $S=3/2$ Ru$^{5+}$ ions in a so-called "lozenge" configuration. Using a Heisenberg antiferromagnet Hamiltonian, we analytically determine the energy eigenstates for general spin $S$. From this model, the neutron scattering cross-sections for excitations associated with spin-3/2 spin-tetramer configurations is determined. Comparison of magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering results shows that the proposed "lozenge" model is not distinctly supported, but provides evidence that the system may be better described as a pair of non-interacting inequivalent dimers, \textit{i.e} double dimers. However, the existence of long-range magnetic order below $T_c \approx 28$ K immediately questions such a description. Although no evidence of the lozenge model is observed, future studies on single crystals may further clarify the appropriate magnetic Hamiltonian., Comment: 11 Pages, 10 Figures, Submitted to Phys.
