This paper focuses on examining the influence of parents' involvement in class on the students' performance in math, the way parents get involved with the school, and their effects on the pupil's success. The study attempts to identify a number of aspects that influence parents' involvement or uninvolvement in education and factors that impact student math performance. In this context, the researcher conducted quantitative research using three questionnaires for students, parents, and teachers. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires were checked and the results were analyzed in SPSS. A total of 302 people participated in the study: 132 sixth graders, 67 parents of the students, and 103 mathematics educators. This study was carried out in Arab elementary schools in Israel within the period of 2022-2023. The findings show that parents' involvement in the decision-making process of their children's education increases based on the parents' level of education. In other words, the higher the parents' level of education, the more they get involved at school. The findings reveal that parents and educators also have a high level of trust and the way parents track their children's education reflects their involvement in school. There is also a statistically significant relationship between student success and parental involvement at school. The researchers recommended focusing on communication between parents and mathematics teachers in the school and the meaningful participation of parents in the school.

We work at a train station. Not at the ticket counter, the bar, or the toilets, but at a grassroots commu- nity academy called La Foresta, located right next to the office of the railway police. We have worked here since 2017, first around and now in our local train station, as a group of actively engaged citizens, freelance educators, researchers in the wild, and change-oriented feral entrepreneurs. In this text, we share three vignettes and the respective key learnings of the collective process of creative and transformative instrastructuring that we are driving in and around the train station of Rovereto, a town with 40,000 inhabitants in the Italian Alps.

Abstract We investigated the biomarker profile of neurodegeneration, Alzheimer’s and Lewy body pathology in the CSF of 148 polysomnography-confirmed patients with isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (IRBD), a condition that precedes Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We assessed misfolded α-synuclein (AS) by RT-QuIC assay, amyloid-beta peptides (Aβ42 and Aβ40), phosphorylated tau (p-tau), and total tau (t-tau) by CLEIA and neurofilament light chain (NfL) by ELISA. We detected AS in 75.3% of patients, pathologically decreased Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio in 22.5%, increased p-tau in 15.5%, increased t-tau in 14.9%, and elevated NfL in 14.7%. After a mean follow-up of 2.48 ± 2.75 years, 47 (38.1%) patients developed PD (n = 24) or DLB (n = 23). BackgroundERAS is an evidence-based multimodal perioperative protocol focused on stress reduction and promoting a return to function. The aim of this work is to perform a cost-consequence analysis for the implementation of ERAS in major lung resection by means of minimally invasive surgery (VATS) from the public health service perspective, evaluating resource consumption and clinical outcomes with respect to a control group of past patients, which did not adopt an ERAS protocol.MethodsOutcome differences (re-intervention rates, major and minor intraoperative and postoperative complications, readmissions, and mortality) as well as the costs of preoperative, operative, and postoperative care were estimated. The sample consisted of 64 consecutive patients enrolled in the ERAS programme between April 2021 and August 2022, compared to a control group (historical cohort) comprising 31 patients treated from April 2020 to December 2020, prior to the implementation of the ERAS programme. The study sample comprises patients who fulfil the established ERAS protocol inclusion criteria, including general criteria (acceptance of the protocol, proximity of residence, absence of contraindications to physiotherapy and early mobilisation), surgical criteria (anatomical lung resection up to lobectomy, absence of extensive resection, good possibility of conducting the operation in VATS) and anaesthesiologic criteria (ASA ≤2). Melatonin is an indoleamine with functions as neurohormone, that is well known as pharmaceutical or healthcare product. Like many pharmaceutical compounds, melatonin is recognized to be an unstable molecule, principally sensitive to light and high temperatures. Storage conditions, including temperature and light, over different storage periods have been considered as important factors in melatonin degradation. This research describes for the first time, the utilization of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) as green alternatives to organic solvents for improving the stability of the hormone under various storage conditions. The results showed that temperature and light effect on melatonin content during the storage presented a diverse behavior according to the solvent. At low temperatures, the hydrophilic eutectic systems based on choline chloride-glycerol and lactic acid-glucose, along with water, were the most effective in extending the shelf life of the hormone compared to conventional solvents. However, at high temperature, this behavior was reversed. Regarding the effect of light, it significantly affects the stability of melatonin, primarily UV exposure. The eutectic systems appear to be the best medium for melatonin stability under this condition. These findings highlight the potential of NADES for their protective role in the stability of the compound that could be explained in terms of their viscosity and the hydrogen bond interactions within the solute and the eutectic systems.

The focus of this research is how Sicilian state university mathematics professors faced the challenge of teaching via distance education during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic entered our lives suddenly, the professors found themselves having to lecture using an e-learning platform that they had never used before, and for which they could not receive training due to the health emergency. In addition to the emotional aspects related to the particular situation of the pandemic, there are two aspects to consider when teaching mathematics at a distance. The first is related to the fact that at university level, lecturers generally teach mathematics in a formal way, using many symbols and formulas that they are used to writing. The second aspect is that the way mathematics is taught is also related to the students to whom the teaching is addressed. In fact, not only online, but also in face-to-face modality, the teaching of mathematics to students on the mathematics degree course involves a different approach to lessons (as well as to the choice of topics to explain) than teaching mathematics in another degree course. In order to investigate how the Sicilian State university mathematics professors taught mathematics at distance, a questionnaire was prepared and administered one month after the beginning of the lockdown in Italy. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were made, which allowed us to observe the way that university professors have adapted to the new teaching modality: they started to appropriate new artifacts (writing tablets, mathematical software, e-learning platform) to replicate their face-to-face teaching modality, mostly maintaining their blackboard teacher status. Their answers also reveal their beliefs related to teaching mathematics at university level, noting what has been an advantageous or disadvantageous for them in distance teaching.

Abstract Seed amplification assays have been implemented in Parkinson’s disease to reveal disease-specific misfolded alpha-synuclein aggregates in biospecimens. While the assays’ qualitative dichotomous seeding response is valuable to stratify and enrich cohorts for alpha-synuclein pathology in general, more quantitative parameters that are associated with clinical dynamics of disease progression and that might potentially serve as exploratory outcome measures in clinical trials targeting alpha-synuclein would add important information. To evaluate whether the seeding kinetic parameters time required to reach the seeding threshold (LAG phase), the peak of fluorescence response (Imax), and the area under the curve (AUC) are associated with clinical trajectories, we analyzed LAG, Imax, and AUC in relation to the development of cognitive decline in a longitudinal cohort of 199 people with Parkinson’s disease with positive CSF alpha-synuclein seeding status. Patients were stratified into tertiles based on their individual CSF alpha-synuclein seeding kinetic properties. The effect of the kinetic parameters on longitudinal development of cognitive impairment defined by MoCA ≤25 was analyzed by Cox-Regression. Patients with a higher number of positive seeding replicates and tertile groups of shorter LAG, higher Imax, and higher AUC showed a higher prevalence of and a shorter duration until cognitive impairment longitudinally (3, 6, and 3 years earlier with p ≤ 0.001, respectively). Results remained similar in separate subgroup analyses of patients with and without GBA mutation. We conclude that a more prominent alpha-synuclein seeding kinetic profile translates into a more rapid development of cognitive decline.

The COVID-19 pandemic not only impacted people's lives globally, but also pushed faculty to quickly adapt to an online teaching environment and continue it until the end of the school or academic year. This study is urgently needed to gain an understanding of the challenges STEM faculty members face during the COVID-19 era as they make the transition to teaching online, while many of them engage in this shift for the first time. The initial results of an online survey of 101 International STEM faculty members showed that online evaluation and pedagogy are the most disrupted dimensions of e-learning when instructors struggled to re-orchestrate their teaching during such an unprecedented event. In addition, while the affective domain of teaching is identified as the missing dimension of an e-learning framework, adoption of the new technology is rated as the area of least concern for teaching STEM online.

ABSTRACT Beta‐synuclein is a promising cerebrospinal fluid and blood biomarker of synaptic damage. Here we analysed its accuracy in the discrimination between sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (n = 150) and non‐prion rapidly progressive dementias (n = 106). In cerebrospinal fluid, beta‐synuclein performed better than protein 14‐3‐3 (AUC 0.95 vs. 0.89) and, to a lesser extent, than total tau (AUC 0.92). Further, the diagnostic value of plasma beta‐synuclein (AUC 0.91) outperformed that of plasma tau (AUC 0.79) and neurofilament light chain protein (AUC 0.65) and was comparable to that of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers. Beta‐synuclein might represent the first highly accurate blood biomarker for the diagnosis of sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease.

Abstract Background The levels of synaptic markers synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25) and neurogranin (Ng) have been shown to increase early in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and to have prognostic potential. However, no validation studies assessed these biomarkers' diagnostic and prognostic value in a large clinical setting cohort of rapidly progressive dementia. Methods In this retrospective study, using commercially available immunoassays, we measured the levels of SNAP-25, Ng, 14–3-3, total-tau (t-tau), neurofilament light chain (NfL), and phospho-tau181 (p-tau) in CSF samples from consecutive patients with CJD (n = 220) or non-prion rapidly progressive dementia (np-RPD) (n = 213). We evaluated and compared the diagnostic accuracy of each CSF biomarker and biomarker combination by receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) analyses, studied SNAP-25 and Ng CSF concentrations distribution across CJD subtypes, and estimated their association with survival using multivariable Cox regression analyses. The objective of this work is to show an educational path for combinatorics and graph theory that has the aim, on one hand, of helping students understand some discrete mathematics properties, and on the other, of developing modelling skills through a robust understanding. In particular, for the path proposed to middle-school students, we used a connection between k-permutations and colourings of graphs: we indicated a way to solve problems related to counting all the possible arrangements of given objects in a k-tuple under given constraints. We solve this kind of problem by associating a graph with the constraints related to the k-tuple and by using graphs' colourings, in which every colour is associated with one of the objects. The number of arrangements is given by finding the number of colourings through an algorithm called the Connection-Contraction Algorithm. The educational path is set within the Teaching for Robust Understanding framework and the goal, from the mathematical skills perspective, is to enhance modelling, passing from real situations (the fish problem in our experiment) to mathematical problems (the graph's colouring in our experiment) and vice versa through the use of technology (the Connection-Contraction Algorithm with yEd editor, in our experiment), by using an extended modelling cycle. The meetings with students were videotaped and some results of the experimentation are given.

Introduction. Fungal infections in patients with COVID-19 was one of the most debated topics during the pandemic. Objectives. To analyze the clinical characteristics and evolution of people living with HIV/AIDS and coinfection with cryptococcus and COVID-19 (group A) or without it (group B). Materials and methods. This is an analytical and retrospective study. We reviewed medical records of patients with meningeal cryptococcosis between April 2020 and May 2021. Results. We studied 65 people living with HIV/AIDS and with cryptococcosis infection diagnosed from April 2020 to May 2021. Fifteen patients with HIV/AIDS suffered from cryptococcosis and COVID-19, and out of these, 14 presented meningitis (group A), while 28 suffered from meningeal cryptococcosis, but did not have COVID-19 (group B). Conclusions. No statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups (A and B) considering: intracranial hypertension, presence of Cryptococcus antigens in cerebrospinal fluid, sensorium deterioration or mortality. The detection of Cryptococcus antigens in serum by lateral flow assay was highly effective to rapidly diagnose cryptococcosis in patients with HIV/AIDS who also developed COVID-19. Patients of both groups consulted for cryptoccocosis sometime after, in comparison with the pre-pandemic cases related to this infection.

Human prion diseases are rare, transmissible and often rapidly progressive dementias. The most common type, sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), is highly variable in clinical duration and age at onset. Genetic determinants of late onset or slower progression might suggest new targets for research and therapeutics. We assembled and array genotyped sCJD cases diagnosed in life or at autopsy. Clinical duration (median:4, interquartile range (IQR):2.5-9 (months)) was available in 3,773 and age at onset (median:67, IQR:61-73 (years)) in 3,767 cases. Phenotypes were successfully transformed to approximate normal distributions allowing genome-wide analysis without statistical inflation. 53 SNPs achieved genome-wide significance for the clinical duration phenotype; all of which were located at chromosome 20 (top SNP rs1799990, pvalue = 3.45x10-36, beta = 0.34 for an additive model; rs1799990, pvalue = 9.92x10-67, beta = 0.84 for a heterozygous model). Fine mapping, conditional and expression analysis suggests that the well-known non-synonymous variant at codon 129 is the obvious outstanding genome-wide determinant of clinical duration. Pathway analysis and suggestive loci are described. No genome-wide significant SNP determinants of age at onset were found, but the HS6ST3 gene was significant (pvalue = 1.93 x 10-6) in a gene-based test. We found no evidence of genome-wide genetic correlation between case-control (disease risk factors) and case-only (determinants of phenotypes) studies. Relative to other common genetic variants, PRNP codon 129 is by far the outstanding modifier of CJD survival suggesting only modest or rare variant effects at other genetic loci.

Abstract The air in an operating room becomes more contaminated as the occupancy of the room increases. Individuals residing in a room can potentially emit infectious agents. In order to inhibit and better understand the epidemiology of surgical site infections, it is important to develop procedures to track room occupancy level and respiration. Exhaled CO2 provides a respiratory byproduct that can be tracked with IR light and is associated with human occupancy. Exhaled CO2 can also be used as an indirect measure of the potential release and level of infectious airborne agents. We show that non-dispersive infrared CO2 sensors can be used to detect CO2 in operating room air flow conditions of 20 air changes per hour and a positive pressure of 0.03 in. H2O. The CO2 concentration increased consecutively for occupation levels of one to four individuals, from approximately 65 ppm above the background level when one individual occupied the operating room for twenty minutes to approximately 300 ppm above the background when four individuals were present for twenty minutes. The amount of CO2 detected increases as the number of occupants increase, the activity level increases, the residency time increases and when the ventilation level is reduced.

Abstract Introduction The treatment of moderate functionalmitral regurgitation (FMR) during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is still debated. Our primary end point was to assess the improvement of “mitral valve reserve” (MVR) after CABG alone as a clinical demonstration of left ventricular (LV) recovery. Materials and methods Between June 2019 and June 2021, we prospectively enrolled 104 consecutive patients undergoing CABG with moderate FMR. Inclusion criteria were inferior-posterior-lateral wall hypokinesia and revascularization of the circumflex or right coronary artery. MVR was calculated as the ratio between anterior and posterior leaflets’ straight length. All patients were followed for 1 year. The improvement of MVR has been considered as a reduction of the ratio between anterior and posterior leaflets straight length. Results Compared to baseline, mean MVR was significantly reduced both at 6 (2.24 ± 0.95 vs. 1,91 ± 0.6; p = 0,047) and 12 months follow-up (2.24 ± 0.95 vs. 1,69 ± 0.49; p = 0,006). Left ventricular (LV) reverse remodeling, meant as improvement of LV ejection fraction and reduction of LV end-systolic volume index and mitral anulus diameter were evaluated at 6 months and 1 year. Mitral regurgitation grade were also significantly reduced at 6 months (p
