Abstract

During a Severe Accident (SA) occurring in a nuclear power plant, many Fission Products (FP) are released from the degraded fuel and are transported in the Reactor Coolant System (RCS). Depending on their volatility, FP can be either deposited on the surface of the Reactor Coolant System (RCS) or transported into the containment building from where they may be released into the environment in case of early containment failure. This was the case for the Fukushima Daiichi (FD) accident with important FP releases which were observed following the containment vessel failure which lasted up to several weeks after the accident. If early phase releases were well predicted by SA simulation codes, delayed releases were not correctly predicted [1]. Such discrepancies can be attributed to the revaporization of deposits inside the RCS which were not yet modeled in the SA simulation tools. Previous experiments over the past 20 years evidenced the possible formation and revaporization of CsI [2]. However, up to now, no clear CsI revaporization mechanism has been determined. In order to propose a mechanism, this study (scheduled within the OECD/NEA/ESTER project) aims at determining the speciation of each species remaining on the substrate after revaporization tests under different conditions using XPS and ToF-SIMS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry. These two combined techniques allow the identification of the main species of the residue leading to the proposition of two revaporization reactions.

Abstract

This study explores the performances of nickel‐based materials for the dry reforming of methane (DRM), an important process for hydrogen and syngas productions. Ni nanoparticles are issued from porous phyllosilicate phase exolution under reducing conditions (in situ or ex situ). Phyllosilicate precursors were obtained by deposition/precipitation with urea onto SBA‐15 porous silica, with metal loading up to 40 wt.%. Reaction was performed at 600–700 °C. The successful formation and stabilization of highly dispersed nanoparticles (2–6 nm) is revealed, even for highly loaded formulations (20 wt.% and 40 wt.%). In DRM‐700 (CH4/CO2=1, 20 % CH4, 480,000 mL gcat−1 h−1) the formulation at 20 wt.% metal loading (Ni_20 %) activated during reaction affords 50 % and 65 % of CH4 and CO2 conversions respectively at 700 °C. Ni_20 % is showing excellent resistance toward sintering after DRM stability test of 80 h. Characterizations made for spent catalyst show high resistance toward sintering and limited carbon formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Bimetallic catalysis for conversion of bio-sourced molecules has often relied on noble metals that should be replaced in the near future by the association of cheaper and more abundant base metals, also known by a poor Z-contrast, which makes in-depth characterization of these systems challenging. However, determining the distribution of base metals in bimetallic nanoparticles is of paramount importance if one wants to rationalize their selectivity. Besides demonstrating that, despite their oxidable character, Ni-Fe catalysts are stable systems for liquid-phase hydroconversion of furfural, this study demonstrates that heterogeneities in the structure of reduced Ni-Fe nanoparticles are key to understanding their catalytic properties, provides a characterization methodology to discriminate between their surface and core compositions, and determines an adequate balance between the two metals that allows tuning the relative rates of the various reaction pathways and, thus, the selectivity.

Abstract

National audience; Les piles à oxyde solide haute température (HT-SOFC) sont généralement composées d’une cathode composite La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM)/YSZ, d’un électrolyte à base de zircone stabilisée à l’yttrium (YSZ) et d’un cermet nickel/YSZ à l’anode. En raison de la conductivité limitée de la zircone stabilisée, des températures de fonctionnement élevées (> 700 °C) sont nécessaires pour atteindre la mobilité ionique requise. Les difficultés d’élaboration de ces dispositifs sont à l’origine des efforts développés pour abaisser la température de fonctionnement. Le remplacement d’YSZ par de l’oxyde de bismuth stabilisé à l’erbium (ESB) dans le compartiment cathodique et par de la cérine stabilisée (GDC) dans le compartiment anodique, deux matériaux présentant des conductions ioniques bien supérieures à YSZ, a permis d’obtenir des gains de performances importants, atteignant des densités de puissance de ~1 W cm-2 à 650 °C [1]. A la suite de ces travaux, plusieurs groupes ont cherché à améliorer ce type de SOFC en optimisant la microstructure ou la fabrication de la cathode mais en gardant la composition utilisée pour les piles à combustible classiques, La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 [2]. Dans ce travail, nous nous intéressons au rôle de la teneur en strontium dans La1‑xSrxMnO3 sur la résistance spécifique de surface (ASR) d’électrodes composites LSM/ESB. Les compositions x = 0.15, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 ont été évaluées pour déterminer l’influence de la structure, des propriétés de transport électronique ou encore du rapport Mn3+/4+. En utilisant la diffraction des rayons X, l’analyse thermogravimétrique et la spectroscopie de diffusion des ions de basse énergie (LEIS), nous avons démontré que, contrairement à ce qui est observé à haute température où la ségrégation de l’oxyde de strontium à la surface des électrodes est le processus de désactivation principal, à plus basse température, c’est l’oxydation de surface de LSM qui limite la dissociation de l’oxygène. L’activité catalytique des cathodes a été évaluée par spectroscopie d’impédance sur des cellules symétriques avec un électrolyte d’ESB. Abstract

International audience; Typical high temperature solid oxide fuel cells (HT-SOFC) use a La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM)/Zr1.92Y0.08O3.96 (YSZ) composite cathode on a YSZ electrolyte and a nickel/YSZ cermet anode. Due to the limited oxide conductivity of yttria stabilized zirconia, high temperatures (> 700 °C) are required in order to achieve sufficient ionic conduction. However, elevated temperatures come with significant engineering challenges motivating the long standing effort to decrease the operation temperature of SOFC. Substituting YSZ by erbium stabilized bismuth oxide (ESB) in the cathodic compartment and gadolinium doped ceria (GDC) at the anode, two much better ionic conductors, allow for a significant improvement leading to a specific power density of ~1 W cm-2 at 650 °C.1 Based on these results several groups optimized the microstructure or preparation of the cathode without changing the composition of the LSM.2 However, this stoichiometry was optimized for high temperature compatibility with YSZ and needed to be optimized as well for lower temperature.Here, we focused on the influence of the strontium content in La1-xSrxMnO3 on the area specific resistance (ASR) of composite LSM/ESB electrodes. Several compositions (x = 0.15, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8) were tested to investigate the influence of the structure, the electronic transport mechanism or the Mn3+/4+ ratio. Using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and Low Energy Ion Scattering spectroscopy (LEIS) we showed that, differently from the high temperature range, where surface segregation of SrO is the main deactivation process, at lower temperature it is the surface oxidation that inhibits the oxygen reduction efficiency of LSM. The catalytic activity of the cathodes was evaluated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) on symmetric cells using an ESB electrolyte. Abstract

International audience; The present work aims at presenting our investigations on the redox behaviour of Cu-or Mndoped LaFeO 3-based perovskite powders under three-way catalysis (TWC) relevant conditions. Two distinct La-deficient catalysts of generic formula La 0.67 Fe 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 3 and La 0.67 Fe 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 3 denoted as Mn-dLFO and Cu-dLFO, respectively, were prepared based on the conventional citrate complexation route and systematically investigated using complementary characterisation techniques. This study has made it possible to highlight fundamentally different structures. In Cu-dLFO, most Cu 2+ cations are expelled from the LaFeO 3 perovskite lattice in the form of a segregated CuO phase. On the other hand, in the case of Mn-dLFO, majority of Mn 3+ cations are stabilised within the perovskite solid solution, while substantial iron exsolution in the form of an additional α-Fe 2 O 3 phase was evidenced. The evolution of both catalysts during CO-TPR using operando Raman revealed the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) besides the relative structural stability of the LaFeO 3 lattice. The reduction of Mn 3+ to Mn 2+ , indirectly suggested by Raman analysis, is further supported by a quasi-in situ XPS study. The latter also evidenced the reduction of CuO to metal copper to a large extent in Cu-dLFO. In addition, a share of the α-Fe 2 O 3 phase present in Mn-dLFO is reduced to metal Fe 0 during CO oxidation, and is fully re-oxidised upon NO reduction. Our investigation thus evidences that both copper and manganese sites in Cu-dLFO and Mn-dLFO, respectively, are redox-active centres upon CO oxidation / NO reduction with, however, varying operating modes underpinned by their fundamentally different structures.

Abstract

International audience; The effect of Silver-Indium-Cadmiun (SIC) control rod on the transport of volatile fission products (I, Cs,Mo) in conditions of a Reactor Coolant System under NPP severe accident was investigated within threesemi-integral tests in a thermal gradient tube. The experiments addressed separately the effect of eachSIC element. Nature of transported and deposited species was investigated by ICP MS, ESEM-EDX,Raman Microspectrometry, XRD and XPS techniques.For the first time, numerous metallic molybdates involving SIC components were evidenced. The formationof such metallic molybdates competes with the formation of Cs-molybdate and may in certainconditions strongly reduce the scavenging effect of Mo towards Cs. As a result the nature of transportediodine can be strongly modified, compared to chemical systems involving only Mo, Cs and I. The dataobtained are useful to guide what species have to be added in the thermodynamic database used inthe SA simulation software.

Abstract

The mechanical and physical properties of zirconium carbide (ZrC) are limited to its ability to deteriorate in oxidizing environments. Low refractory oxides are typically formed as layers on ZrC surfaces when exposed to the slightest concentrations of oxygen. However, this carbide has a wide range of applications in nuclear reactor lines and nozzle flaps in the aerospace industry, just to name a few. To develop mechanically strong and oxygen-resistant ZrC materials, the need for studying and characterizing the oxidized layers, with emphasis on the interfacial structure between ZrC and the oxidized phases, cannot be understated. In this paper, the ZrC(111)//c-ZrO2 (111) interface was studied by both finite temperature molecular dynamic simulation and DFT. The interfacial mechanical properties were characterized by the work of adhesion which revealed a Zr|OO|Zr|OO//ZrC(111) interface model as the most stable with an oxygen layer from ZrO2 being deposited on the ZrC(111) surface. Further structural analysis at the interface showed a crack in the first ZrO2 layer at the interfacial region. Investigations of the electronic structure using the density of state calculations and Bader charge analysis revealed the interfacial properties as local effects with no significant impacts in the bulk regions of the interface slab. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 3 different surface plasma treatments on the immobilization of β-galactosidase on a fibrous PET nonwoven membrane. Two methods 1. Entrapment in a thin calcium alginate coating and 2. Direct sorption, were used to immobilize the enzyme. The three different plasma treatments for surface activation of PET nonwovens were: 1. Air atmospheric DBD plasma, 2. Cold remote plasma-CRP with 100% N2 and 3.- CRP with a mixture of N2/O2 gases. Plasma treatment of the PET fiber surface increased the quantity of immobilized enzyme using the entrapment method, and the degree of alginate film cross-linking highly influenced the enzyme activity. Highest enzyme activity was reached for the PET treated with air atmospheric plasma and cross-linked with 0.25 g/l of CaCl2. With the direct sorption method, greater amounts of enzyme were immobilized as compared to the entrapment method, but a considerable proportion of enzyme lost their catalytic activity. Only with the CRP N2/O2 plasma treatment, up to 90% of sorbed enzyme maintained their activity. Reusability study showed that for the optimized entrapment method, a progressive decrease in activity was observed after each use cycle. With the optimized sorption method using N2/O2 CRP plasma, no decrease in enzyme activity was detected, and the immobilized enzyme could be used over more than 15 cycles.

Abstract

International audience; Lanthanum orthoferrite, a highly potential three-way catalyst, shaped as apolycrys-talline thin film has been comprehensively analysed by combining bulk and surface characterization techniques. The possibility to accomplish unprecedented surface information has been presented, thanks to the combined use of LEIS, XPS and ToF-SIMS. The structural, morphological and surface properties at nano-metric scale make such thin films indistinguishable from powdered solids. Thus, 5 the relevance of using such model materials for advanced surface investigations of LaFeO 3±δ-based three-way catalysts has been demonstrated.
