Abstract

Mamane This paper describes the authors' experience in using the US EPA Gaussian models in making environmental impact statements which focus on four different fields highways, quarries, an airport and tunnels. The main problems encountered are the uncertainties in the emission factors, the lack of accounting of the complex terrain effects and the fact that the Israeli Standards relate to total NOx concentration rather than NO22.

Abstract

The Mediterranean Atmospheric Mercury Cycle System (MAMCS) project was performed between 1998 and 2000 and involved the collaboration of universities and research institutes from Europe, Israel and Turkey. The main goal of MAMCS was to investigate dynamic processes affecting the cycle of mercury in the Mediterranean atmosphere by combining ad hoc field measurements and modelling tasks. To study the fate of Hg in the Mediterranean Basin an updated emission inventory was compiled for Europe and the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Models were developed to describe the individual atmospheric processes which influence the chemical and physical characteristics of atmospheric Hg, and these were coupled to meteorological models to examine the dispersion and deposition of Hg species in the Mediterranean Basin. One intercomparison and four two-week measurement campaigns were carried out over a three-year period. The work presented here describes the results in general terms but focuses on the areas where definite conclusions were unforthcoming and thus highlights those aspects where, in spite of advances made in the understanding of Hg cycling, further work is necessary in order to be able to predict confidently Hg and Hg compound concentration fields and deposition patterns. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Abstract

Mercury species in air have been measured at five sites in Northwest Europe and at five coastal sites in the Mediterranean region during measurements at four seasons. Observed concentrations of total gaseous mercury (TGM),total particulate mercury (TPM) and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) were generally slightly higher in the Mediterranean region than in Northwest Europe. Incoming clean Atlantic air seems to be enriched in TGM incomparison to air in Scandinavia. Trajectory analysis of events where high concentrations of TPM simultaneously were observed at sites in North Europe indicate source areas in Central Europe and provide evidence of transport of mercuryon particles on a regional scale.

Abstract

Mounting evidence links deregulated protein synthesis to tumorigenesis via the translation initiation factor complex eIF4F. Components of this complex are often overexpressed in a large number of cancers and promote malignant transformation in experimental systems. mTOR affects the activity of the eIF4F complex by phosphorylating repressors of the eIF4F complex, the eIF4E binding proteins. The immunosuppressant rapamycin specifically inhibits mTOR activity and retards cancer growth. Importantly, mutations in upstream negative regulators of mTOR cause hamartomas, haemangiomas, and cancers that are sensitive to rapamycin treatment. Such mutations lead to increased eIF4F formation and consequently to enhanced translation initiation and cell growth. Thus, inhibition of translation initiation through targeting the mTOR-signalling pathway is emerging as a promising therapeutic option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. A linker region of the yeast zinc cluster protein leu3p specifies binding to everted repeat DNA.

Abstract

Yeast zinc cluster proteins form a major class of yeast transcriptional regulators. They usually bind as homodimers to target DNA sequences, with each monomer recognizing a CGG triplet. Orientation and spacing between the CGG triplet specifies the recognition sequence for a given zinc cluster protein. For instance, Gal4p binds to inverted CGG triplets spaced by 11 base pairs whereas Ppr1p recognizes a similar motif but with a spacing of 6 base pairs. Hap1p, another member of this family, binds to a direct repeat consisting of two CGG triplets. Other members of this family, such as Leu3p, also recognize CGG triplets but when oriented in opposite directions, an everted repeat. This implies that the two zinc clusters of Leu3p bound to an everted repeat must be oriented in opposite directions to those of Gal4p or Ppr1p bound to inverted repeats. In order to map the domain responsible for proper orientation of the zinc clusters of Leu3p, we constructed chimeric proteins between Leu3p and Ppr1p and tested their binding to a Leu3p and a Ppr1p site. Our results show that the linker region, which bridges the zinc cluster to the dimerization domain, specifies binding of Leu3p to an everted repeat. We propose that the Leu3p linker projects the two zinc clusters of a Leu3p homodimer in opposite directions allowing binding to everted repeats.
