Abstract

We must improve our ability to model the response of energetic materials to thermal stimuli and the processes involved in the energetic response. We have developed and used a time step option to efficiently and accurately compute the hours that the energetic material can take to react. Since on these longer film scales, materials can be expected to have significant motion, it is even more important to provide high-order advection for all components, including the chemical species. We show an example cook-off problem to illustrate these capabilities.

Abstract

This report evaluates physical characteristics and mechanical properties of the production-grade composite Class IV flextensional transducer shell produced by Brunswick Defense. The void content was very low; the average was <0.5%. The fiber distribution was very uniform throughout the shell; the average fiber volume was 52%. Interlaminar shear strength averaged 11.4 ksi. The shear modulus was very nonlinear. Its initial value was 0.52 Mpsi. Through-the- thickness strength averaged 6.7 ksi in tension and 24.4 ksi in compression. Through-the-thickness test results revealed a nonlinear modulus in compression and a fairly linear modulus in tension.

Abstract

We report a case of pulmonary venoocclusive disease in which chest radiography, when supplemented with computed tomography after contrast medium administration, was specific enough to make the diagnosis without resorting to more invasive, potentially dangerous procedures. A brief review of the literature, with emphasis on etiology, pathogenesis, and possible therapeutic approaches, emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of this rare and usually fatal disease.

Abstract

A 33-year-old woman was seen with fever, confusion, and respiratory distress. A diagnosis of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) was made when renal failure, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia subsequently developed. An open kidney biopsy confirmed the clinical diagnosis. The patient initially was seen with the roentgenographic and clinical appearance of pulmonary hemorrhage, which was confirmed histologically and, to our knowledge, previously has not been associated with TTP.
