Aims. To provide a schematic mathematical description of the imaging concept of the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on board Solar Orbiter. The derived model is the fundamental starting point for both the interpretation of STIX data and the description of the data calibration process. Methods. We describe the STIX indirect imaging technique which is based on spatial modulation of the X-ray photon flux by means of tungsten grids. We show that each of 30 STIX imaging sub-collimators measures a complex Fourier component of the flaring X-ray source corresponding to a specific angular frequency. We also provide details about the count distribution model, which describes the relationship between the photon flux and the measured pixel counts. Results. We define the image reconstruction problem for STIX from both visibilities and photon counts. We provide an overview of the algorithms implemented for the solution of the imaging problem, and a comparison of the results obtained with these different methods in the case of the SOL2022-03-31T18 flaring event.

The Spectrometer and Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on board Solar Orbiter observes solar X-ray emission in the range of 4 – 150 keV and produces spectra and images of solar flares over a wide range of flare magnitudes. During nominal operation, STIX continuously generates data. A constant data flow requires fully automated data-processing pipelines to process and analyze the data, and a data platform to manage, visualize, and distribute the data products to the scientific community. The STIX Data Center has been built to fulfill these needs. In this paper, we outline its main components to help the community better understand the tools and data it provides. The STIX Data Center is operated at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) and consists of automated processing pipelines and a data platform. The pipelines process STIX telemetry data, perform common analysis tasks, and generate data products at different processing levels. They have been designed to operate fully automatically with minimal human intervention. The data platform provides web-based user interfaces and application programmable interfaces for searching and downloading STIX data products. Context. The Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) is one of 6 remote sensing instruments on-board Solar Orbiter. It provides hard X-ray imaging spectroscopy of solar flares by sampling the Fourier transform of the incoming flux. Aims. To show that the visibility amplitude and phase calibration of 24 out of 30 STIX sub-collimators is well advanced and that a set of imaging methods is able to provide the first hard X-ray images of the flaring Sun from Solar Orbiter. Methods. We applied four visibility-based image reconstruction methods and a count-based one to calibrated STIX observations. The resulting reconstructions are compared to those provided by an optimization algorithm used for fitting the amplitudes of STIX visibilities. Results. When applied to six flares with GOES class between C4 and M4 which occurred in May 2021, the five imaging methods produce results morphologically consistent with the ones provided by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on-board the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO/AIA) in UV wavelengths. The $\chi^2$ values and the parameters of the reconstructed sources are comparable between methods, thus confirming their robustness. Conclusions. This paper shows that the current calibration of the main part of STIX sub-collimators has reached a satisfactory level for scientific data exploitation, and that the imaging algorithms already available in the STIX data analysis software provide reliable and robust reconstructions of the morphology of solar flares.

The Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) is the HXR instrument onboard Solar Orbiter designed to observe solar flares over a broad range of flare sizes, between 4-150 keV. We report the first STIX observations of microflares recorded during the instrument commissioning phase in order to investigate the STIX performance at its detection limit. This first result paper focuses on the temporal and spectral evolution of STIX microflares occuring in the AR12765 in June 2020, and compares the STIX measurements with GOES/XRS, SDO/AIA, and Hinode/XRT. For the observed microflares of the GOES A and B class, the STIX peak time at lowest energies is located in the impulsive phase of the flares, well before the GOES peak time. Such a behavior can either be explained by the higher sensitivity of STIX to higher temperatures compared to GOES, or due to the existence of a nonthermal component reaching down to low energies. The interpretation is inconclusive due to limited counting statistics for all but the largest flare in our sample. For this largest flare, the low-energy peak time is clearly due to thermal emission, and the nonthermal component seen at higher energies occurs even earlier. This suggests that the classic thermal explanation might also be favored for the majority of the smaller flares. In combination with EUV and SXR observations, STIX corroborates earlier findings that an isothermal assumption is of limited validity. Future diagnostic efforts should focus on multi-wavelength studies to derive differential emission measure distributions over a wide range of temperatures to accurately describe the energetics of solar flares. Commissioning observations confirm that STIX is working as designed. As a rule of thumb, STIX detects flares as small as the GOES A class. The products of magnetic reconnection in Saturn's magnetotail are identified in magnetometer observations primarily through characteristic deviations in the north-south component of the magnetic field. These magnetic deflections are caused by travelling plasma structures created during reconnection rapidly passing over the observing spacecraft. Identification of these signatures have long been performed by eye, and more recently through semi-automated methods, however these methods are often limited through a required human verification step. Here, we present a fully automated, supervised learning, feed forward neural network model to identify evidence of reconnection in the Kronian magnetosphere with the three magnetic field components observed by the Cassini spacecraft in Kronocentric radial-theta-phi (KRTP) coordinates as input. This model is constructed from a catalogue of reconnection events which covers three years of observations with a total of 2093 classified events, categorized into plasmoids, travelling compression regions and dipolarizations. This neural network model is capable of rapidly identifying reconnection events in large time-span Cassini datasets, tested against the full year 2010 with a high level of accuracy (87%), true skill score (0.76), and Heidke skill score (0.73). From this model, a full cataloguing and examination of magnetic reconnection events in the Kronian magnetosphere across Cassini's near Saturn lifetime is now possible., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

A common feature of electromagnetic emission from solar flares is the presence of intensity pulsations that vary as a function of time. Known as quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs), these variations in flux appear to include periodic components and characteristic time-scales. Here, we analyse a GOES M3.7 class flare exhibiting pronounced QPPs across a broad band of wavelengths using imaging and time-series analysis. We identify QPPs in the timeseries of X-ray, low frequency radio and EUV wavelengths using wavelet analysis, and localise the region of the flare site from which the QPPs originate via X-ray and EUV imaging. It was found that the pulsations within the 171 \.A, 1600 \.A, soft X-ray (SXR), and hard X-ray (HXR) light curves yielded similar periods of $\sim$122 s, $\sim$131s, $\sim$123 s, and $\sim$137 s, respectively, indicating a common progenitor. The low frequency radio emission at 2.5 MHz contained a longer period of $\sim$231 s. Imaging analysis indicates that the location of the X-ray and EUV pulsations originates from a HXR footpoint linked to a system of nearby open magnetic field lines. Our results suggest that intermittent particle acceleration, likely due to 'bursty' magnetic reconnection, is responsible for the QPPs. The precipitating electrons accelerated towards the chromosphere produce the X-ray and EUV pulsations, while the escaping electrons result in low frequency radio pulses in the form of type III radio bursts. The modulation of the reconnection process, resulting in episodic particle acceleration, explains the presence of these QPPs across the entire spatial range of flaring emission.

Breakthroughs in our understanding of physical phenomena have traditionally followed improvements in instrumentation. Studies of the magnetic field of the Sun, and its influence on the solar dynamo and space weather events, have benefited from improvements in resolution and measurement frequency of new instruments. However, in order to fully understand the solar cycle, high-quality data across time-scales longer than the typical lifespan of a solar instrument are required. At the moment, discrepancies between measurement surveys prevent the combined use of all available data. In this work, we show that machine learning can help bridge the gap between measurement surveys by learning to \textbf{super-resolve} low-resolution magnetic field images and \textbf{translate} between characteristics of contemporary instruments in orbit. We also introduce the notion of physics-based metrics and losses for super-resolution to preserve underlying physics and constrain the solution space of possible super-resolution outputs.

Machine learning techniques have been successfully applied to super-resolution tasks on natural images where visually pleasing results are sufficient. However in many scientific domains this is not adequate and estimations of errors and uncertainties are crucial. To address this issue we propose a Bayesian framework that decomposes uncertainties into epistemic and aleatoric uncertainties. We test the validity of our approach by super-resolving images of the Sun's magnetic field and by generating maps measuring the range of possible high resolution explanations compatible with a given low resolution magnetogram.

Magnetic reconnection is believed to be the primary mechanism by which non-potential energy stored in coronal magnetic fields is rapidly released during solar eruptive events. Unfortunately, owing to the small spatial scales on which reconnection is thought to occur, it is not directly observable in the solar corona. However, larger scale processes, such as associated inflow and outflow, and signatures of accelerated particles have been put forward as evidence of reconnection. We explore the origin of a persistent Type I radio source that accompanies a coronal X--shaped structure during its passage across the disk. Of particular interest is the time range around a partial collapse of the structure that is associated with inflow, outflow, and signatures of particle acceleration. Imaging radio observations from the NRH were used to localise the radio source. SDO AIA EUV observations from the same time period were analysed, looking for evidence of inflows and outflows. Further \texttt{mpole} magnetic reconstructions using SDO HMI observations allowed the magnetic connectivity associated with the radio source to be determined. The Type I radio source was well aligned with a magnetic separator identified in the extrapolations. During the partial collapse, gradual (1 km/s) and fast (5 km/s) inflow phases and fast (30 km/s) and rapid (80-100 km/s) outflow phases were observed, resulting in an estimated reconnection rate of ~ 0.06. The radio source brightening and dimming was found to be co-temporal with increased soft x-ray emission in both RHESSI and GOES. We interpret the brightening and dimming of the radio emission as evidence for accelerated electrons in the reconnection region responding to a gradual fall and rapid rise in electric drift velocity, in response to the inflowing and outflowing field lines. Solar Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large-scale ejections of plasma and magnetic field from the corona, which propagate through interplanetary space. CMEs are the most significant drivers of adverse space weather on Earth, but the physics governing their propagation through the Heliosphere is not well understood. This is mainly due to the limited fields-of-view and plane-of-sky projected nature of previous observations. The Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission launched in October 2006, was designed to overcome these limitations. In this thesis, a method for the full three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the trajectories of CMEs using STEREO was developed. Using the 3D trajectories, the true kinematics were derived, which were free from projection effects. Evidence for solar wind (SW) drag forces acting in interplanetary space were found, with a fast CME decelerated and a slow CME accelerated toward typical SW velocities. It was also found that the fast CME showed a linear dependence on the velocity difference between the CME and the SW, while the slow CME showed a quadratic dependence. The differing forms of drag for the two CMEs indicated the forces responsible for their acceleration may have been different. CMEs are known to generate bow shocks as they propagate through the corona and SW. Although CME-driven shocks have previously been detected indirectly via their emission at radio frequencies, direct imaging has remained elusive due to their low contrast at optical wavelengths. Using STEREO observations, the first images of a CME-driven shock as it propagates through interplanetary space from 8 R_Sun to 120 R_Sun (0.5 AU) were captured. Fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) generate standing or bow shocks as they propagate through the corona and solar wind. Although CME shocks have previously been detected indirectly via their emission at radio frequencies, direct imaging has remained elusive due to their low contrast at optical wavelengths. Here we report the first images of a CME-driven shock as it propagates through interplanetary space from 8R_Sun to 120R_Sun (0.5AU), using observations from the STEREO Heliospheric Imager (HI). The CME was measured to have a velocity of ~1000 km/s and a Mach number of 4.1\pm1.2, while the shock front stand-off distance (Delta) was found to increase linearly to ~20 R_Sun at 0.5 AU. The normalised standoff distance (Delta/DO) showed reasonable agreement with semi-empirical relations, where D_O is the CME radius. However, when normalised using the radius of curvature, Delta/R_O did not agree well with theory, implying that R_O was under-estimated by a factor of ~3-8. This is most likely due to the difficulty in estimating the larger radius of curvature along the CME axis from the observations, which provide only a cross-sectional view of the CME., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures (black and white), AAS LATEX v5.2

Solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are the most significant drivers of adverse space weather at Earth, but the physics governing their propagation through the heliosphere is not well understood. While stereoscopic imaging of CMEs with the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) has provided some insight into their three-dimensional (3D) propagation, the mechanisms governing their evolution remain unclear due to difficulties in reconstructing their true 3D structure. Here we use a new elliptical tie-pointing technique to reconstruct a full CME front in 3D, enabling us to quantify its deflected trajectory from high latitudes along the ecliptic, and measure its increasing angular width and propagation from 2-46 solar radii (approximately 0.2 AU). Beyond 7 solar radii, we show that its motion is determined by an aerodynamic drag in the solar wind and, using our reconstruction as input for a 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we determine an accurate arrival time at the Lagrangian L1 point near Earth., Comment: 5 figures, 2 supplementary movies

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large-scale ejections of plasma and magnetic field from the solar corona, which propagate through interplanetary space at velocities of $\sim$100--2500~km~s$^{-1}$. Although plane-of-sky coronagraph measurements have provided some insight into their kinematics near the Sun ($<$32~R$_\odot$), it is still unclear what forces govern their evolution during both their early acceleration and later propagation. Here, we use the dual perspectives of the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecrafts to derive the three-dimensional kinematics of CMEs over a range of heliocentric distances ($\sim$2--250\,R$_{\odot}$). We find evidence for solar wind (SW) drag-forces acting in interplanetary space, with a fast CME decelerated and a slow CME accelerated towards typical SW velocities. We also find that the fast CME showed linear ($\delta=1$) dependence on the velocity difference between the CME and the SW, while the slow CME showed a quadratic ($\delta=2$) dependence. The differing forms of drag for the two CMEs indicate the forces and thus mechanism responsible for there acceleration may be different.

A method for the full three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of the trajectories of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) using Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) data is presented. Four CMEs that were simultaneously observed by the inner and outer coronagraphs (COR1 and 2) of the Ahead and Behind STEREO satellites were analysed. These observations were used to derive CME trajectories in 3-D out to ~15Rsun. The reconstructions using COR1/2 data support a radial propagation model. Assuming pseudo-radial propagation at large distances from the Sun (15-240Rsun), the CME positions were extrapolated into the Heliospheric Imager (HI) field-of-view. We estimated the CME velocities in the different fields-of-view. It was found that CMEs slower than the solar wind were accelerated, while CMEs faster than the solar wind were decelerated, with both tending to the solar wind velocity., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 1 appendix
