Background: (1) Periodontal disease (PD) is a globally prevalent chronic inflammatory condition, exacerbated by the dysbiosis of the oral microbiota. This study aims to evaluate the bacterial load of specific periodontopathogenic bacteria in patients with malocclusions (MAL) compared to those without. (2) Methods: Conducted at the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania, this pilot study involved two groups: patients with MAL and PD, and patients with PD but without MAL. We included 20 patients: 10 with MAL (9 with crowding and 1 with an open bite) and 10 without MAL. Gingival crevicular fluid was collected for bacterial DNA extraction and quantified bacterial load using real-time PCR, focusing on 12 periodontopathogenic bacteria across different complexity classes. (3) Results: The study identified significantly higher concentrations of Treponema denticola (p = 0.023, median = 4.32, IQR = 2.76–5.53 vs. median = 1.93, IQR = 0–3.19), Tannerella forsythia (p = 0.020, mean = 6.04 ± 0.72 vs. mean = 4.4 ± 1.89) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (p = 0.002, median = 5.64, IQR = 4.94–5.98 vs. median = 2.48, IQR = 0–4.05) in patients with MAL compared to those without. This suggests that MAL contributes to an environment conducive to the proliferation of specific pathogens, potentially accelerating PD progression. Additionally, Eikenella corrodens (p = 0.040, mean = 4.55 ± 1.02 vs. mean = 3.23 ± 1.56), Campylobacter rectus (p < 0.001, mean = 4.2 ± 0.56 vs. mean = 1.8 ± 1.51), Prevotella intermedia (p = 0.043, median = 5.04, IQR = 0–5.49 vs. median = 0, IQR = 0–3.39), Capnocytophaga sputigena (p = 0.011, median = 5.91, IQR = 5.47–6.17 vs. median = 4.63, IQR = 3.83–5.64), and Capnocytophaga gingivalis (p = 0.007, median = 5.87, IQR = 5.34–6.03 vs. median = 4.4, IQR = 3.5–5.71) also showed elevated concentrations, indicating the broad impacts of MAL on oral microbial profiles. (4) Conclusions: The findings demonstrate a significant relationship between MAL and increased bacterial loads, underscoring the need for its integration in managing PD. Background: The Sella point, located near the center of the Sella Turcica and providing cover for the pituitary gland in the skull, is one of the most frequently used cranial cephalometric landmarks for radiograph tracing. The research aimed to quantify the dimensions and delineate the anatomy of the sella turcica across various skeletal shapes. Methods: 180 subjects, aged 9 to 27 years, including 91 men and 89 females, had lateral cephalometric radiographs. These subjects were divided into three skeleton classes: Class I, II, and III, with 60 subjects in each group. Measurements of the length, depth, and anteroposterior diameter were made, and the shape was examined using linear dimensions. The difference in linear dimensions was determined using a student t-test, and the link between sella turcica size and skeletal types was examined using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). When comparing the age groups, the older group's linear dimensions were bigger than the younger group's (p < 0.01). Male and female length differences were found to be significantly different (p <0.05). The length and diameter of the skeletons differed significantly from the sella size when compared. Sixty-one percent of the individuals had normal-appearing sella turcica. Further research addressing the sella turcica in the South Indian population can use the current study's linear dimensions and form as reference standards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To analyse the relationship between the different habits that occur in childhood and the different malocclusions in the three planes of space. Material and methods: A clinical examination of 106 children between 5 and 12 years of age was carried out and a survey validated by professors of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Seville was made for the parents in order to identify the habits and relate them to the possible malocclusions detected in the child's mouth. Results: 72.64% of the sample presented a malocclusion in at least one of the three planes of space, with a similar distribution. When correlating the variables, statistically significant relationships were observed in the vertical plane with atypical swallowing (p = 0 < 0.05; V > 0.3) and lip sucking (p = 0 < 0.05; V > 0.3) and in the horizontal plane with oral breathing (p = 0 < 0.05; V > 0.3), atypical swallowing (p = 0 < 0.05; V < 0.3) and digital sucking (p = 0 < 0.05; V < 0.3). Conclusions: It has been observed that the prevalence and prolongation of habits in childhood is increasing, so it is essential to detect pernicious habits at an early age to prevent the establishment of malocclusions and to favour the correct craniofacial growth of the child. Craniofacial development is a complex process with several factors involved. When malocclusions have a skeletal origin, they can generate an orthognathic (class I), retrognathic (class II) or prognathic (class III) relationship of the mandibular bone respect to the maxilla. This configuration is closely related to the base of the skull where the sella turcica has been studied for this purpose due to its ectomesenchymal origin (Dasgupta et al., 2018) and its anatomical relationships. Several studies have been conducted to elucidate this relationship and this work seeks to contribute to the discussion by comparing the characteristics of the sella turcica among skeletal malocclusions through lateral teleradiographies. The study was conducted using 52 radiographic plates of individuals between 18 and 24 years old with an equal number of male and female subjects, 15 class I, 7 class II and 30 class III. The radiographic area of the sella turcica was digitally measured and morphologically classified using the categories of Axelsson et al. (2004). An intraclass correlation coefficient was obtained with 95 % confidence, yielding a value of 0.88 for the sella turcica area, 0.89 for the ANB angle and 0.70 for the Wits value, demonstrating excellent observer reliability. With 95 % confidence, Fisher's exact test showed a significant association (p = 0.029) between the morphological variations of the ST and the skeletal class, being more frequent in class III. The Kruskal Wallis H test did not show significant differences (p=0.550) in median sellar area between skeletal classes. Morphological variations seem to be more relevant than anatomical variations in this association. New studies are required in the Chilean population with a greater number of cases. Background: Palatal rugae, or plicae palatinae, are uniquely designed structures, well-formed, asymmetric, irregular mucosal folds suited in the anterior part of the hard palate. Palatoscopy, or the analysis of the palatal rugae pattern, is a simple, low-cost, non-invasive, innovative, and highly sensitive technique that can be successfully used in stomatology. This study aimed to analyze the palatal rugae pattern among an adolescent sample of the Albanian population in Kosovo, to determine the most prevalent palatal rugae pattern in both genders in association with Class I, II, and III malocclusions according to Angle’s classification. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 100 adolescents (50 males and 50 females) aged from 12 to 18 were randomly selected from schools in southeastern Kosovo. All subjects were divided into classes of malocclusion according to Angle’s classification (Class I, Class II, and Class III). The rugae patterns were classified based on shape, unification, and length according to the Thomas and Kotze classification. In the present study, the palatal rugae pattern in Class I, II and III malocclusions show no significant difference between female and male subjects. In Class I malocclusion, the straight pattern was dominant in female subjects, and the wavy pattern was dominant in male subjects. The straight pattern was dominant in males and females with Class II malocclusion. In Class III malocclusion, the wavy pattern was dominant in female subjects, and the curved pattern was dominant in male subjects. The study showed that male subjects were at slightly higher risk for having Class I malocclusion and slightly lower risk for having Class II and Class III malocclusions than female subjects. Conclusion: This study provides essential information regarding the dominant palatal rugae pattern among Albanian adolescents of southeastern Kosovo with Class I, II, and III malocclusions according to Angle’s classification.

Introduction: Studies on the effect of feeding practices and sucking habits on malocclusion traits in the primary dentition of pre-schoolchildren from developing countries are scarce. Purpose: Assessing the association of feeding and sucking habits with malocclusion traits, and the association of malocclusion traits with observed oral functional problems. Methods: It was a cross-sectional survey of children aged 3-5 years residing in Kinondoni and Temeke Districts of Dar es Salaam region in Tanzania. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists, SPSS version 21.0. Univariate analysis was applied to generate frequencies of different variables. Cross tabulations and Chi-square statistics were used to assess bivariate relationships and multivariate analyses were performed by multiple logistic regression. Results: Most pre-schoolchildren (82.5%) were breastfed for less than two years. A history of non-nutritive sucking habits was reported in 28.1% of the children, mostly in boys than girls (33.6% versus 21.8%, respectively. The current non-nutritive sucking habits were reported in 17.8% of the participants. Overall, malocclusion traits were most significantly seen in children who were breastfed for less than two years, compared with those who were breastfed for two years or more (48.5% versus 27.3%, respectively). The presence of various malocclusion traits was significantly found among most of the children who had a history of non-nutritive sucking habits, compared with those who had never performed the habits (65.9% versus 38.6 %, respectively). In the logistic regression analyses, children who were breastfed for a shorter duration (<2 years), their probability of being found with different traits of malocclusion in the primary dentition was almost three times that for those who were breastfed for a longer duration (= two years). Also, children who were not actively performing non-nutritive sucking habits were less likely to have an open bite compared with those who were actively performing non-nutritive sucking habits. An open bite in children was significantly associated with speech problems (p<0.01) and swallowing with tongue thrusting (p=0.000). Conclusion and recommendations: Most of the children who were breastfed for a shorter duration and children who had non-nutritive sucking habits were found with various malocclusion, compared with those who were breastfed for a longer duration and those who had no non-nutritive sucking habits. It is crucial to recommend exclusive breastfeeding for up to 6 months and continuation of breastfeeding practice, possibly for up to 2 years of age due to its nutritional, immunological, and stomato-gnathic system developmental benefits. Background: This systematic review aims to analyze the spontaneous dentoalveolar changes in the mandibular arch after maxillary expansion in growing patients obtained with different expansion protocols: Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME), Slow Maxillary Expansion (SME), and Leaf Expander. Methods: The study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligibility criteria were established in the PICO format, involving patients who underwent slow, rapid, or leaf maxillary expansion during the mixed or early permanent dentitions. A comprehensive search of electronic databases and manual searches was conducted up to December 2023. The outcome measures included inter-mandibular first permanent molar width, inter-deciduous molar and canine width, arch perimeter, and arch length; both short- and long-term results were considered. The articles that met the inclusion criteria were included in this systematic review and were qualitatively evaluated using a methodological quality scoring system with a 13-point scale. To assess the inter-examiner agreement concerning the article selection and the qualitative assessment of the included studies, Kappa statistics were computed. Results: A total of 1184 articles were identified through electronic and manual searches. After the removal of duplicates and the initial examination of the titles and abstracts, 57 articles were considered for the full text analysis, and according to the eligibility and exclusion criteria, 22 studies were finally selected, composed of 8 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 14 retrospective/case-control studies. The qualitative assessment of the included studies showed the following scores: 6 papers have high research quality, 5 have moderate quality, and 11 have low quality. SME demonstrated negligible mandibular changes, with less than 1 mm variation on average (range 0.46–2.00 mm) in the selected parameters and relapses observed in the long term. RME induced more significant increases, particularly in intermolar width greater than 1 mm, which ranged between 0.93 and 3.3 mm, and good stability over the long term. Leaf Expander exhibited promising short-term lower intermolar width increases greater than 1 mm and ranged from 0.5 to 1.69 mm, but long-term stability was not thoroughly evaluated. Conclusions: SME results in negligible short- and long-term effects, while RME, especially with Haas-type appliances, exhibits significant intermolar width increases that remain stable over the years. Body biomechanics and dental occlusion are related, but this interaction is not fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between body posture and occlusion in patients with and without dental pathology. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 29 patients divided into a control group and a group with pathology (malocclusions). Body posture was evaluated by dynamic baropodometry, analyzing parameters such as the line of gait and the anteroposterior and lateral position of the center of pressure (CoP). Occlusion was classified radiographically according to the sagittal skeletal relationship. Results showed significant differences in mean position phase line between groups (p = 0.01–0.02), with means of 115.85 ± 16.98 mm vs. 95.74 ± 24.47 mm (left side) and 109.03 ± 18.03 mm vs. 91.23 ± 20.80 mm (right side) for controls and pathologies, respectively. The effect size was large (Cohen’s d 0.97 and 0.92). There were no differences in the anteroposterior (p = 0.38) or lateral (p = 0.78) position of the CoP. In gait analysis, significant differences were observed in left (548.89 ± 127.50 N vs. 360.15 ± 125.78 N, p < 0.001) and right (535.71 ± 131.57 N vs. 342.70 ± 108.40 N, p < 0.001) maximum heel strength between groups. The results suggest an association between body posture and occlusion, although further studies are needed to confirm this relationship. Background: Various clinical studies performed in adults have shown the relationship between craniofacial morphology and masticatory muscle function. However, the growth of the masticatory muscle has not received such attention, when compared with the volume of studies on the skeletal growth of face. With this background and considering the widespread use of ultrasonography (USG), the following study was undertaken to provide some insights into the relationship between muscle and bone and facial morphology. Methods: This was a prospective, observational study conducted over a period of three years from 2012 to 2015 to assess the correlation between the thickness of the masseter muscle in Angle's normal occlusion and the various malocclusions of the dental arch as well as the facial form. Patients with a full complement set of teeth, normal tooth morphology, Angle's normal occlusion, Angle's class I-III malocclusion, those with a history of third molar extraction, and impaction were included in the study. Those with a history of any prior orthodontic treatment, restorations, or any missing teeth (except the third molar) were exempted from the study. The greater thickness of masseter muscle in relaxed and clenched state was recorded on USG. Facial morphology was determined with the aid of facial photographs. Results: The study was conducted on 140 patients. The class I normal occlusion group had the thickest masseter muscle, while the class III malocclusion group had the thinnest masseter muscle. Facial parameters showed highly significant gender-wise differences in class I normal occlusion, class I malocclusion, and class II division II malocclusion. There was a significant negative co-relation between the thickness of masseter muscle and facial forms in all the categories of Angle's classification as indicated by a negative regression coefficient B (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The masseter muscle thickness correlated directly with male gender and normal occlusion, and inversely with the degree of malocclusion and facial form. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the occurrence of complications before and after the treatment of facial fractures, as well as the impact of the factors on the treatment results and evaluation of their relationships. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a prospective case-control study comprising 90 patients aged between 18 and 65 with facial fractures. Depending on the treatment method, patients were divided into three groups: those treated surgically using a transcutaneous approach, those treated surgically using a transmucosal approach, and those treated conservatively (control group). Following complications before and after treatment were compared: malocclusions, paresthesias, facial asymmetry, diplopia, and limited mouth opening. The follow-up period after the treatment of choice was six months. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in complications after treatment: malocclusion, paresthesia, facial asymmetry, and limited mouth opening. Regarding the transcutaneous approach, there is a substantial reduction in the number of complications after treatment, such as malocclusions (p=0.008), paresthesias (p=0.004), and facial asymmetries (p<0.001). Similar results were obtained for the transmucosal approach. Pain intensity positively correlated with preoperative complications: malocclusion, paresthesias, and facial asymmetry. The range of mouth opening had a negative interdependence with malocclusion before and after treatment with infection, fractura male sanata, malocclusion, paresthesias, postoperative level of mouth opening, and damage to the facial nerve. CONCLUSIONS: There is no difference in the reduction of preoperative and postoperative complications related to surgery when an incision is made through the skin or mucosa. Introduction: This retrospective study aimed to determine skeletal and dental changes after a growth spurt and shortly after treatment using a facemask in skeletal Class III malocclusion with maxillary deficiency. Methods: We retrospectively studied 50 patients (25 patients per group) with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent facemask treatment with tooth-anchored (T-A, mean age 7.92) and miniscrew-anchored (M-A, mean age 9.84) intraoral appliances. In both groups, the facemask applied a traction force of 350–400 g to each side, such that the traction was directed 30° forward and downward. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from all patients before (T1), immediately after (T2), and at an average of 37.11 months after maxillary protraction (T3). A total of 13 cephalometric measurements were analyzed to determine the skeletal and dental changes. A paired t-test was used to verify the effects before, after, and during follow-up periods in each group. Results: An anteroposterior relationship, the values of SNA and ANB, evident in both groups at T2, was significantly improved in the M-A group (p < 0.05). However, the values of ANB and MP–SN, which indicate the relapse of anteroposterior and vertical relation of maxilla and mandible, were significantly higher in the T-A group compared with the M-A group during follow-up period. The maxillary first molars were significantly more extruded and maxillary incisors were more protruded in the T-A group than the M-A group, and this persisted at T3 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Miniscrew-anchored maxillary protraction increased the skeletal improvement of anteroposterior relationship and reduced the dental and skeletal relapses compared with tooth-anchored maxillary protraction in growing patients with a hyperdivergent patterns and skeletal Class III malocclusion. Background: This review aimed to analyze the relapse in orthognathic surgery. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were used to find papers that matched our topic dating from 1 January 2012 up to November 2022. Inclusion criteria were (1) human studies, (2) open access studies, (3) studies concerning the correlation between orthognathic surgery and relapse. Exclusion criteria were: (1) in vitro or animal studies, (2) off-topic studies, (3) reviews, (4) other languages than English. Results: A total of 482 results were obtained resulting in 323 publications after duplicate removal (158). After screening and eligibility phases 247 records were excluded: 47 reviews, 5 in animals, 35 in vitro, 180 off-topic. The authors successfully retrieved the remaining 78 papers and evaluated their eligibility. A total of 14 studies from these were ultimately included in the review. Conclusion: Using cephalometric examinations and digital study models, these studies reveal that the relapse after orthognathic surgery is an event that occurs in most of the cases. The limitation of our research is that most of the studies are retrospective and use small sample sizes. Background and Objectives: A higher prevalence of dental malocclusion has been suggested among individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) compared to controls, although no studies to date have investigated such a difference according to age group. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of dental malocclusion and other orthodontic measures between DS and non-syndromic (non-DS) individuals across three age groups of children, adolescents, and adults. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 147 patients. Of those, 72 were diagnosed with DS and were divided into N = 15 children (<10 years), N = 23 adolescents (10–18 years) and N = 34 adults (>18 years). The remaining 75 patients were sex- and age-matched controls. The two groups were compared according to age group in terms of the prevalence of dental malocclusion, measures of sagittal, vertical, and transverse discrepancy, facial profile, and probable sleep bruxism with chi-square tests for proportion. Results: The DS patients consistently exhibited a higher prevalence of Class 3 malocclusion, concave profile and anterior crossbite compared to the non-DS patients, regardless of age group. The non-DS adolescents presented with a significantly higher prevalence of convex profile than the DS adolescents. The adolescent and adult DS patients most commonly presented with a maxillary transverse discrepancy and posterior crossbite compared to the non-DS controls. The DS adults had a higher prevalence of probable sleep bruxism. Conclusions: Patients with DS showed a higher prevalence of Class 3 malocclusion, concave profile and anterior crossbite compared to non-DS controls, regardless of age group. Abstract Objectives The purpose was to conduct a comprehensive study of malocclusions and oral dysfunctions on 11‐year‐old children and to study the risk factors associated with malocclusions. Material and Methods A cross‐sectional descriptive epidemiological survey was conducted among 359 children in France. A clinical examination was conducted, and orthodontic and oral functional data were collected. In addition, the need for orthodontic treatment was evaluated using the criteria defined by of the French National Authority for Health (HAS). Finally, a univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to assess the risks associated with malocclusions. Results Most children (88%) exhibited a malocclusion, regardless of gender (p = .912). Aim of the research was to distinguish a frequency of cases of pathological tooth attrition between the patients having different malocclusions and asking for orthodontic treatment. There was an analysis of 1010 clinical cases of patients from 8 to 55 years old, who’ve been receiving treatment at the orthodontic department of Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry named after A.I. Evdokimov in a period of time from January 2002 to December 2013. Intra-oral images and diagnostic teeth models were analyzed during the investigation. Therefore, during the research it was discovered that 22% of all patients that were examined had pathological tooth wear. All of the cases were divided in groups according to MSUMD Classification (1990). To sum up, as a result of calculation there might be a conclusion that more frequently tooth attrition was registered in the cases of the distal occlusion (Class II) combined with a deep-bite. Mostly front teeth were suffering. Research also makes it clear that malocclusion plays an important role in the development of pathological tooth attrition.

Introduction. The diagnosis in orthodontics should be made through an analysis in the three planes of space, both in dental structures and bone structures, and not only based on the evaluation of crowding or dental gyroversions that the patient has. Objective. To compare the intercanine and intermolar distance in malocclusions. Methodology. The sample consisted of 120 orthodontic pre-treatment study models. Data collection was carried out using an electronic record sheet in the Microsoft Office Excel program, the patient's initials, sex, age, and intercanine and intermolar width were collected. The materials used were: study models, a digital caliper, fine brush brushes and a computer. The statistics were carried out in the Excel and StatCalc programs, the descriptive statistics were calculated and the ANOVA test was used. Results. The average intercanine distance in class I was 31.80 mm, in class II malocclusion it was 31.61 mm and in class III 31.54 mm. In the intermolar distance the average of class I was 39.91 mm, in class II 38.26 mm and in class III 37.87 mm. Conclusions. Type I, II and III dental malocclusions have no influence on intercanine and intermolar measurements. More studies with larger samples will have to be perform to see if the results hold. Background: This systematic review aims to analyze the spontaneous dentoalveolar changes in the mandibular arch after maxillary expansion in growing patients obtained with different expansion protocols: Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME), Slow Maxillary Expansion (SME), and Leaf Expander. Methods: The study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligibility criteria were established in the PICO format, involving patients who underwent slow, rapid, or leaf maxillary expansion during the mixed or early permanent dentitions. A comprehensive search of electronic databases and manual searches was conducted up to December 2023. The outcome measures included inter-mandibular first permanent molar width, inter-deciduous molar and canine width, arch perimeter, and arch length; both short- and long-term results were considered. The articles that met the inclusion criteria were included in this systematic review and were qualitatively evaluated using a methodological quality scoring system with a 13-point scale. To assess the inter-examiner agreement concerning the article selection and the qualitative assessment of the included studies, Kappa statistics were computed. Results: A total of 1184 articles were identified through electronic and manual searches. After the removal of duplicates and the initial examination of the titles and abstracts, 57 articles were considered for the full text analysis, and according to the eligibility and exclusion criteria, 22 studies were finally selected, composed of 8 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 14 retrospective/case-control studies. The qualitative assessment of the included studies showed the following scores: 6 papers have high research quality, 5 have moderate quality, and 11 have low quality. SME demonstrated negligible mandibular changes, with less than 1 mm variation on average (range 0.46–2.00 mm) in the selected parameters and relapses observed in the long term. RME induced more significant increases, particularly in intermolar width greater than 1 mm, which ranged between 0.93 and 3.3 mm, and good stability over the long term. Leaf Expander exhibited promising short-term lower intermolar width increases greater than 1 mm and ranged from 0.5 to 1.69 mm, but long-term stability was not thoroughly evaluated. Conclusions: SME results in negligible short- and long-term effects, while RME, especially with Haas-type appliances, exhibits significant intermolar width increases that remain stable over the years. Leaf Expander shows short-term lower intermolar width increases, requiring further investigation into long-term stability.

Objectives: The purpose was to conduct a comprehensive study of malocclusions and oral dysfunctions on 11‐year‐old children and to study the risk factors associated with malocclusions. Material and Methods: A cross‐sectional descriptive epidemiological survey was conducted among 359 children in France. A clinical examination was conducted, and orthodontic and oral functional data were collected. In addition, the need for orthodontic treatment was evaluated using the criteria defined by of the French National Authority for Health (HAS). Finally, a univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to assess the risks associated with malocclusions. Results: Most children (88%) exhibited a malocclusion, regardless of gender (p =.912). The examination of oral functions identified a large number of swallowing (87%) and respiration (42.7%) disorders. The presence of malocclusion was statistically linked to the low position of the tongue at rest (p <.001), abnormal swallowing (p =.03), and improper mouth breathing (p =.001). After a multivariate analysis, the type of respiration (odds ratio [OR] = 3.2 [1.4–7.3]) and the position of tongue at rest (OR = 3.43 [1.7–7.1]) were the two most prominent factors in the prediction of emerging malocclusion. Conclusion: This epidemiological survey reveals a high prevalence of dental malocclusions and functional disorders. AimsThe aims of this study were to (1) evaluate oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in 8–12-year-old Costa Rican schoolchildren before and after dental treatment and (2) collect clinical and sociodemographic characteristics.MethodsSchoolchildren completed the Child Oral Health Impact Profile-Short Form (COHIP-SF-19) questionnaire before and after dental treatment. One of the parents was asked to complete a sociodemographic survey. Patients were treated for caries, hypomineralizations, and dental malocclusions. The prevalence of these conditions was assessed from the patient's electronic dental record.ResultsEighty participants (39 male and 41 female, average age: 9.4 ± 1.0 years) were recruited. The prevalence of dental caries was 56.1% with a mean deft and DMFT score of 3.15 ± 0.96 and 2.22 ± 0.77, respectively. The prevalence of hypomineralization and dental malocclusions was 53.7% and 82.9%, respectively. The Simplified Oral Hygiene Index before treatment was 1.45 ± 0.45 and after was 1.42 ± 0.43. The mean COHIP-SF-19 total score decreased from 53.7 ± 7.8 before dental treatment to 31.4 ± 4.2 after treatment. Improvements in all subdomains were also observed. Regarding sociodemographic characteristics, 65% of the patients lived in San José, Costa Rica's capital city, and 56.3% of the studied population belonged to a low-income family. Most parents did not complete high school. Regarding the number of family members living in the same house as the patient, an average of four people was reported. In relation to family structure, 58.8% of the children's parents lived together, either married or free union. As for household ownership, 53.8% of parents reported owning their house, 36.3% lived in a rented house, and 10% lived in a borrowed home.ConclusionThe prevalence of caries, hypomineralizations, and dental malocclusions were high before dental treatment. Reported sociodemographic characteristics unlikely changed after dental treatment, suggesting dental care played a pivotal role in improving self-perceptions of oral health and quality of life in our clinical setting.

Introduction: Dental malocclusions are considered a major issue in adolescence, and are often the main reason for which patients go to the dentist. Adolescents′ option to start an orthodontic treatment is questioned in the light of the restrictions imposed in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Introduction: This retrospective study aimed to determine skeletal and dental changes after a growth spurt and shortly after treatment using a facemask in skeletal Class III malocclusion with maxillary deficiency. Methods: We retrospectively studied 50 patients (25 patients per group) with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent facemask treatment with tooth-anchored (T-A, mean age 7.92) and miniscrew-anchored (M-A, mean age 9.84) intraoral appliances. In both groups, the facemask applied a traction force of 350–400 g to each side, such that the traction was directed 30° forward and downward. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from all patients before (T1), immediately after (T2), and at an average of 37.11 months after maxillary protraction (T3). A total of 13 cephalometric measurements were analyzed to determine the skeletal and dental changes. A paired t-test was used to verify the effects before, after, and during follow-up periods in each group. Results: An anteroposterior relationship, the values of SNA and ANB, evident in both groups at T2, was significantly improved in the M-A group (p < 0.05). However, the values of ANB and MP–SN, which indicate the relapse of anteroposterior and vertical relation of maxilla and mandible, were significantly higher in the T-A group compared with the M-A group during follow-up period. The maxillary first molars were significantly more extruded and maxillary incisors were more protruded in the T-A group than the M-A group, and this persisted at T3 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Miniscrew-anchored maxillary protraction increased the skeletal improvement of anteroposterior relationship and reduced the dental and skeletal relapses compared with tooth-anchored maxillary protraction in growing patients with a hyperdivergent patterns and skeletal Class III malocclusion.

Background and Objectives: A higher prevalence of dental malocclusion has been suggested among individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) compared to controls, although no studies to date have investigated such a difference according to age group. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of dental malocclusion and other orthodontic measures between DS and non-syndromic (non-DS) individuals across three age groups of children, adolescents, and adults. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 147 patients. Of those, 72 were diagnosed with DS and were divided into N = 15 children (18 years). The remaining 75 patients were sex- and age-matched controls. The two groups were compared according to age group in terms of the prevalence of dental malocclusion, measures of sagittal, vertical, and transverse discrepancy, facial profile, and probable sleep bruxism with chi-square tests for proportion. Results: The DS patients consistently exhibited a higher prevalence of Class 3 malocclusion, concave profile and anterior crossbite compared to the non-DS patients, regardless of age group. The non-DS adolescents presented with a significantly higher prevalence of convex profile than the DS adolescents. The adolescent and adult DS patients most commonly presented with a maxillary transverse discrepancy and posterior crossbite compared to the non-DS controls. The DS adults had a higher prevalence of probable sleep bruxism. Conclusions: Patients with DS showed a higher prevalence of Class 3 malocclusion, concave profile and anterior crossbite compared to non-DS controls, regardless of age group. Other orthodontic measures showed a fluctuation according to the age group considered.

Introduction. A close relationship between the position of the cervical spine and the craniomandibular complex has been described in the literature, so it is believed that there may be an impact on the position of one or both due to the change in their posture. Objective. Identify the association between malocclusions and the position of the head and neck. Methodology. A descriptive, cross-sectional and observational study was carried out. One hundred twenty lateral skull radiographs were taken into account as a universe, a confidence level of 95% and an error of 3% were used. Results. The average age of the sample was 16 years. The average in the craniovertebral angle was 100.93°, in the hyoid triangle -0.60 mm the C0-C1 distance was 7.1 mm and in the C1-C2 was 5.43 mm. Conclusions. The craniocervical posture has a statistically weak association; it is considered important that a routine diagnosis be obtained in most cases treated in the orthodontic consultation. Aim: To identify the available evidence on the effects that breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding may have on the presence of early childhood caries (ECC) and malocclusion in children with deciduous dentition. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was carried out in different databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, and Epistemonikos, up to January 6, 2022. Studies were independently selected by two reviewers according to title, abstract, and full-text analysis. Disagreements were solved by a third reviewer. Results: A total of 1343 studies were found from the initial search, of which 42 studies were included in this study. Results are controversial, 14 studies concluded that prolonged breastfeeding and bottle-feeding at night increase the risk of caries, 7 studies mentioned that breastfeeding could be a protective factor for dental caries development in children under 6 years, 20 studies concluded that children who were breastfed for less than 6 months have a higher risk of developing malocclusions compared with children who were breastfed for a longer time and children who were bottle-fed compared with children who were breastfed had a higher prevalence of malocclusions, mainly anterior open-bite. Four studies found no significant association between breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding with the development of dental caries and malocclusion. Conclusion: Most included studies concluded that the presence of ECC may be associated with bottle-feeding and prolonged breastfeeding, but reasons still need further development. Regarding malocclusions, most studies concluded that prolonged breastfeeding could be a protective factor for its development, whereas a high frequency and duration of bottle consumption could lead to deformations in the maxillary bone, mainly anterior open-bite. Asthma is a public health problem that has been widely described, but little has been reported about its effects on dental occlusions. The aim of this study was to compare the alterations of normal occlusions in asthmatic children and those without the disease. The study included 186 patients between 5 and 12 years old, divided into two groups. The first group included patients with a previous diagnosis of asthma given by a specialist, which was confirmed by using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire. The second group included patients without the disease. All patients underwent a clinical examination to determine the presence of occlusion alterations in the sagittal, transverse, and vertical planes. Subsequently, chi-squared tests were performed to compare the variables between the groups. A significant association was found between asthma and the variables studied here: alterations in the sagittal plane (chi2 = 7.839, p = 0.005), alterations in the vertical plane (chi2 = 13.563, p < 0.001), alterations in the transverse plane (Fisher's F p < 0.001), and oral habits (chi2 = 55.811, p < 0.001). The results suggest that asthmatic patients are more likely to develop malocclusions, especially anterior open bite and posterior crossbite. To compare pharyngeal airway dimensions and hyoid bone position in different craniofacial growth patterns. In total, 611 patients divided into 9 subgroups were compared according to malocclusion classification and vertical growth pattern, and these subgroups were compared in terms of pharyngeal airway and hyoid measurements. A two-way ANOVA test was used to compare the findings of the subgroups. No significant difference was found for the pharyngeal measurements between the groups (p>0.05). The vertical airway length (PNS-Ep) was significantly shorter in the Class III malocclusion group (p<0.05) and in the hypodivergent group (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between any subgroups in any measurements of the position of the hyoid bone (p>0.05). The pharyngeal airway dimensions and hyoid bone position are similar among individuals in the sagittal direction. To evaluate the relationship between dental malocclusion and speech to understand the etiology of speech sound disorders (SSD) in schoolchildren and to make a correct diagnosis and treatment plan. Articulation and dental occlusion, oromyofunctional evaluation with orofacial praxis and musculature, resting tongue position, and swallowing pattern were analyzed in 290 schoolchildren between the ages of 4 and 7 years. Statistical tests were considered significant for P <.05. A significant association between dental malocclusions (Angle Class II and III, anterior open bite, edge-to-edge bite, overjet and anterior crossbite) and phonetic alterations (P =.008) was observed. Sigmatisms and rhotacisms were the most frequent disorders. Malocclusions also showed a significant association with oral habits and with orofacial praxis and muscle activity. The presence of malocclusion can cause imbalances in the functions involved in the stomatognathic system. Posture of human body corresponds to a certain stable relationship between head, torso and limbs, where a minimal amount of energy is needed for its support. Although clinicians in the field have studied the connection between the muscle chains, maintaining balance of the body, and the musculature in the maxillofacial area (cervical, masticatory), more can be studied and proven in the area. If there is a change of the center of gravity of the body, it is certain that a negative change of posture has been diagnosed. Postural disorders are increasingly common nowadays. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders is increasing as well, along with temporomandibular disorders (TMD), vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus, memory loss and others. The present study aims to demonstrate the need for complex examination of patients with symptoms from the audiovestibular system, stomatognathic and other anatomical systems in the head and neck area. In the present study, 40 (20 male and 20 female) patients who have passed through the Audio-vestibular and Sleep laboratory of the University Medical and Dental Center at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of Medical University – Varna in the period February – June 2022 were included. All of them were invited to fill out an informed consent form. They were also given questionnaires to describe the symptoms, concerning audio-vestibular and stomatognathic systems. Thorough examinations were performed by an ENT-specialist and a physician in dental medicine. All patients were examined on a dynamic stabilometric platform, under different modalities – with eyes open/closed, teeth clenched/relaxed, head tilted left and right, for fixed amount of time – 20 sec. Posturographic platform is not a source of ionizing radiation. Patients who reported pain and noise from the temporomandibular joints, when examined with the posturography platform, shifted the center of gravity of the body more often backwards and to the right side (especially if the TMD was bilateral). In patients who also had vestibular symptoms (dizziness, vertigo), with or without a disorder in the mandibular joints, the center of gravity of the body was more often shifted back and to the right as well. Most of the patients with the described displacement also had an orthodontic deformity. Based on intraoral dental examination, cephalograms, and analysis, patients with Angle class 2 (distal bite), crossbite in the lateral area, laterognathia were diagnozed, the first being the most common in patients with a shift in the center of gravity. In all studied patients, an increase in the length of the stabilogram curve above the reference values of 150 mm was found. A change in the feet - flat feet - was found in half of the patients, included in the study. Postural problems can worsen existing symptoms from other systems with a disorder. Establishing the direction of the displacement helps to establish the genesis of the disorder and directs the appropriate therapy, according to the specific clinical case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anterior and posterior crossbites are malocclusions in the sagittal and transversal dimensions, respectively. As self-correction is rare in these alterations, early interception is recommended to allow normal occlusion and facial development. This case report aimed to discuss the treatment of an eight-year-old boy with an increased inferior facial third, who was submitted for rapid maxillary expansion with a modified bonded appliance to solve both transversal and anteroposterior deficiencies. The correctionof both malocclusions was achieved within 21 days. The advantages of this procedure were to gain space in both arches, enlarge the maxillary arch, and improve nasal breathing. The interceptive therapy, as well as a well-planned appliance, proved to be effective and important for retrieving the patient ́s normal condition and quality of life.

Introduction: Variability in the size and shape of mandibular condyles among individuals of different sexes and ages may appear as a remodeling process to accommodate malocclusion. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess whether or not associations exist between different types of malocclusions and morphological modifications of the mandibular condyle. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted on the Medline database via PubMed interface and supplemented by a manual search via Google Scholar to identify more articles reporting the subject of the review. A combination of controlled vocabulary was used in the search strategy and the final update was stopped on January 2021. The risk of bias was assessed based on the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results and Discussion: Considering the preestablished inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 articles were retained with 2607 human subjects (967 males/1299 females and 341 not specified, age: 4–60 years). Eighty percent of the selected articles reported associations between malocclusion and morphological changes of the condylar head. Sagittal plane malocclusions produce more changes to the temporomandibular joint components (head of condyle and joint space) (71.93%), while vertical malocclusions lead to the most severe manifestations. Conclusions: Cone-beam computed tomography is the most useful tool for the assessment of osseous morphology of mandibular head condyles and detection of cortical erosion (21.7%). Associations between morphological changes of the condylar head and specific types of malocclusions were proven. However, there is still a need for more clinical studies.

The objective of this study was to assess pre-treatment quality of life and the relevant clinical variables in adult patients with malocclusion in order to improve orthodontic treatment strategies.

Lip grooves are unchangeable, permanent and unique to one person and they play a huge role as a marker of sagital jaw relation and gender differentiation. Identification of people is often very difficult, challenging and time-consuming process. The most used techniques in identification processes are DNA comparison, fingerprints and odontometrics measurements. However DNA is very expensive and cannot be used for everyone. Hence fingerprints sometimes in burns also cannot be conducted because of severe decomposition. Sometimes is necessary to apply different and less known techniques. Lip grooves are nonusual, simple, reliable, cost – effective, noninvasive techniques that can be used successfully in human identification. This article reviews different conclusions of authors who researched about these topics. The aim of the study is to establish identity of population of South-East Kosovo, selected among schools of this region, 14 to18 year old, divided equally between girls and boys, using Cheiloscopy. Material and methods: The study involves 17 adolescents of South-East of Kosovo selected among schools of this region, 14- to 18-year-old. All participants are well informed for the purpose of the study and signed an informed consent prepared before the examination. Lip prints are recorded using red lip stick. Materials that are being used are: White paper A4 size white paper, Cellophane tape (10 cm long), Graphite pencil (AIHAO 0.7 mm), Dark red color lipstick, nonglossy (pretty by flormar), Magnifying lens, Scissors. The lipstick is applied with cotton wools gently into the lips and spread over, evenly in upper and lower lip. The lip prints are taken with cellophane tape in the relaxed position of lips. Then the lip prints are immediately stocked on to a piece of white bond paper for further analyses, by using magnifying lens. Also, the thickness and length of the lips will be measured separately for the upper lip and for the lower lip with standard Vernier caliper (0-150 mm) Results: The predominant lip pattern in both genders is Type II lip pattern followed by type I. The most predominant lip pattern among males is type I and II, and Type II & IV lip pattern among females. Conclusion: Cheiloscopy reveals strong association with sagital skeletal jaw relation, thus predicting malocclusions that could be managed early with preventive and interceptive orthodontics. Cheiloscopy also has the role in identification of people in forensic medicine, because identification of human bodies sometimes is very challenging task. When DNA and fingerprints in several circumstances could not be done, lip prints could be considered as an alternative source for identification, because of their highly unique structures. Objective: The interaction between skeletal class and upper airway has been extensively studied. Nevertheless, this relationship has not been clearly elucidated, with the heterogeneity of results suggesting the existence of different patterns for patients' classification, which has been elusive so far, probably due to oversimplified approaches. Hence, a network analysis was applied to test whether different patterns in patients' grouping exist. Settings and sample population: Ninety young adult patients with no obvious signs of respiratory diseases and no previous adeno‐tonsillectomy procedures, with thirty patients characterized as Class I (0 < ANB < 4); 30 Class II (ANB > 4); and 30 as Class III (ANB < 0). Materials and methods: A community detection approach was applied on a graph obtained from a previously analysed sample: thirty‐two measurements (nineteen cephalometric and thirteen upper airways data) were considered. Results: An airway‐orthodontic complex network has been obtained by cross‐correlating patients. Before entering the correlation, data were controlled for age and gender using linear regression and standardized. By including or not the upper airway measurements as independent variables, two different community structures were obtained. Each contained five modules, though with different patients' assignments. Conclusion: The community detection algorithm found the existence of more than the three classical skeletal classifications. These results support the development of alternative tools to classify subjects according to their craniofacial morphology. Oral health related to quality of life (QL) is one of the issues that have recently been highlighted in epidemiological studies. Today, the level of demand of the patients has increased in terms of the desire to improve aesthetics and psychological well-being. It is noteworthy that the human face and smile are fundamental elements of expression, identity and analysis of physical attraction and emotions. Therefore, malocclusion can adversely affect social interaction and psychological well-being. The aim of this study was to comparatively verify the influence of orthodontics on the perception of adults and adolescents in relation to occlusal and esthetic alterations, pain thresholds, social impacts and perception of quality of life. Three hundred eighty-eight (388) individuals of both genders, aged between 9 and 55 years, attending the Postgraduate Clinic in Orthodontics, Dentistry College, Universidade Metropolitana de Santos (SP), were invited to participate in the research. All patients were using fixed orthodontic appliances, in up to five different phases of treatment. One hundred and fifty patients answered the questionnaire and the experiment was divided into two age groups: adolescents and adults. Theselected questionnaires, validated in Portuguese, to measure the influence of orthodontic treatment on Quality of Live (QoL), were the PIDAQ and the OHIP-14. To compare the Adult and Adolescent groups in terms of treatment times (T1 - T5), a non-parametric Mann-Whitney test was performed (comparisons 2 to 2), with an overall significance level of 5%.Regarding adults, there were more negative impacts than in adolescents, showing greater variations. Higher growth was demonstrated in relation to QoLand self-confidence in adults at the beginning of the treatment, highlighting the aesthetic concern. It can be concluded that the fixed orthodontic appliance greatly influences the lives of individuals, particularly adults, especially in social aspects, aesthetics and quality of life. Invisalign® is a therapeutic modality, introduced as an alternative to the Fixed Orthodontic Appliances (FOA), but its indications and advantages still controversial. The objective of the present bibliographical review was to describe the similitudes, advantages and disadvantages of Invisalign® compared to FOA. This bibliographical review counts on 30 references. The bibliographical database of PubMed/Medline and Cochrane Library were consulted. Invisalign® has as main advantages: less pain, maintenance of a better oral hygiene, reduced risk for complications, shorter treatment duration, and relevant psychological and aesthetic benefits. It can be concluded that Invisalign® should be used in mild to moderate malocclusions and as an adequate option in non-growing patients that do not require extractions, reserving the use of FOA to treat the remaining complex cases. Introduction: Variability in the size and shape of mandibular condyles among individuals of different sexes and ages may appear as a remodeling process to accommodate malocclusion. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess whether or not associations exist between different types of malocclusions and morphological modifications of the mandibular condyle. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted on the Medline database via PubMed interface and supplemented by a manual search via Google Scholar to identify more articles reporting the subject of the review. A combination of controlled vocabulary was used in the search strategy and the final update was stopped on January 2021. The risk of bias was assessed based on the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results and Discussion: Considering the preestablished inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 articles were retained with 2607 human subjects (967 males/1299 females and 341 not specified, age: 4–60 years). Eighty percent of the selected articles reported associations between malocclusion and morphological changes of the condylar head. Sagittal plane malocclusions produce more changes to the temporomandibular joint components (head of condyle and joint space) (71.93%), while vertical malocclusions lead to the most severe manifestations. Conclusions: Cone-beam computed tomography is the most useful tool for the assessment of osseous morphology of mandibular head condyles and detection of cortical erosion (21.7%). Associations between morphological changes of the condylar head and specific types of malocclusions were proven. However, there is still a need for more clinical studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Pacifier sucking habit has been associated in the literature with alterations of dental occlusion, and it could be a predisposing factor for other poor oral habits among children. Orthodontic pacifiers have been introduced in the market aiming to reduce these disadvantages caused by the conventional type of pacifiers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of poor oral habits and malocclusions, after usage of orthodontic pacifiers in children with primary dentition. Methods A sample of 198 pre-school children, aged 3–5 years, (96 males and 102 females) who had exclusively used an orthodontic pacifier were included in order to assess the level of poor oral habits and the absence/presence of dental malocclusion. Firstly, children’s parents/legal guardians were given a validated questionnaire, then the children were clinically examined at a dental clinic. Results Most of the children (79.79%) had started using the orthodontic pacifier within the first 3 months of life, and the 43.49% of them continued using it over a period of 2 years. The recorded percentage for those who had used it throughout sleep was 89.39%. Mouth breathing during the night was reported for 36.04% of the children. Tongue thrust swallow affected 16.16% of the sample. The 5.56% of the data indicated the presence of fingersucking/thumbsucking habit. The noted percentages for children with lip biting, lingual interposition between teeth at rest and those with nail biting, were 5.56, 12.63 and 15.15%, respectively. The regression revealed a significant contribution between early start of using an orthodontic pacifier with the prevalence of fingersucking/thumbsucking (OR 0.13, 95% CI 0.04–0.47, p = 0.0004). This also reported a noticeable increase of the malocclusion prevalence among the female gender (OR 2.74, 95% CI 1.42–5.31), as well as those who were not exclusively breastfed (OR 2.26, 95% CI 1.17–4.37). Conclusions Orthodontic pacifiers does not favor the development of poor oral habits, even if it has been used for a period of 2 years in children with primary dentition. Children who begin to use orthodontic pacifier between 0 and 3 months, are less likely to acquire fingersucking/thumbsucking habit. The use of an orthodontic pacifier appears not to be correlated with the prevalence of malocclusion in primary dentition, differently from what stated in literature about the conventional type of pacifier.

Background and Objective: This study analyzes the possibility that Stomatognathic and Postural systems are related by muscle chains. Malocclusion may influence the posture, contact between the foot and the ground, center of mass, footprint or vice-versa. This study aimed to verify whether there is a relationship between dental occlusion and podal system.Materials and Methods: A cross-cutting, descriptive study was carried out on 409 children (222 boys and 187 girls) between 8 and 14 years old. Dental occlusion was assessed on the sagittal plane (Angle's classification) the contact between the foot and the ground and the center of mass were evaluated using a stabilometric platform.Results: There was a statistically significant relationship between the plantigrade phase, the contact surface area and center of gravity. There was a prevalence of molar and canine Angle's class II malocclusion. In molar class II, an anterior center of gravity was predominant, in class I it was centered and in class III, it was posterior. There was significant correlation between malocclusions and the FPI (foot posture index) of the left foot and the height of the scaphoid in the right foot (P < 0.001).Conclusions: Some authors agree with our results. There is still much uncertainty in terms of showing a relationship between both systems. In addition, there is scarce scientific evidence on the topic. Some kind of relationship between the two systems has been proven. Studies that evaluate a group of subjects in a longitudinal manner are necessary to enable the changes taking place in both systems to be defined.
