Considerable research efforts have recently been made to show that a random neural network $N$ contains subnetworks capable of accurately approximating any given neural network that is sufficiently smaller than $N$, without any training. This line of research, known as the Strong Lottery Ticket Hypothesis (SLTH), was originally motivated by the weaker Lottery Ticket Hypothesis, which states that a sufficiently large random neural network $N$ contains \emph{sparse} subnetworks that can be trained efficiently to achieve performance comparable to that of training the entire network $N$. Despite its original motivation, results on the SLTH have so far not provided any guarantee on the size of subnetworks. Such limitation is due to the nature of the main technical tool leveraged by these results, the Random Subset Sum (RSS) Problem. Informally, the RSS Problem asks how large a random i.i.d. sample $\Omega$ should be so that we are able to approximate any number in $[-1,1]$, up to an error of $ \epsilon$, as the sum of a suitable subset of $\Omega$. We provide the first proof of the SLTH in classical settings, such as dense and equivariant networks, with guarantees on the sparsity of the subnetworks. Central to our results, is the proof of an essentially tight bound on the Random Fixed-Size Subset Sum Problem (RFSS), a variant of the RSS Problem in which we only ask for subsets of a given size, which is of independent interest.

We consider 3-Majority, a probabilistic consensus dynamics on a complete graph with $n$ vertices, each vertex starting with one of $k$ initial opinions. At each discrete time step, a vertex $u$ is chosen uniformly at random. The selected vertex $u$ chooses three neighbors $v_1,v_2,v_3$ uniformly at random with replacement and takes the majority opinion held by the three, where ties are broken in favor of the opinion of $v_3$. The main quantity of interest is the consensus time, the number of steps required for all vertices to hold the same opinion. This asynchronous version turns out to be considerably harder to analyze than the synchronous version and so far results have only been obtained for $k=2$. Even in the synchronous version the results for large $k$ are far from tight. In this paper we prove that the consensus time is $\tilde{\Theta}( \min(nk,n^{1.5}) )$ for all $k$. We investigate the dynamics of opinion formation on social networking platforms, focusing on how individual opinions, influenced by both social connections and platform algorithms, evolve. We model this process using a differential equation, accounting for both peer influence and the platform's content curation based on user preferences. Our primary aim is to analyze how these factors contribute to opinion polarization and identify potential strategies for its mitigation. We explore the conditions under which opinions converge to a consensus or remain polarized, emphasizing the role of the platform's influence function. Our findings in two-agent, complete graphs, and stochastic block model provide insights into the impact of social media algorithms on public discourse and offer a framework for understanding how polarization can be avoided.

Prophet inequalities are a central object of study in optimal stopping theory. In the iid model, a gambler sees values in an online fashion, sampled independently from a given distribution. Upon observing each value, the gambler either accepts it as a reward or irrevocably rejects it and proceeds to observe the next value. The goal of the gambler, who cannot see the future, is maximising the expected value of the reward while competing against the expectation of a prophet (the offline maximum). In other words, one seeks to maximise the gambler-to-prophet ratio of the expectations. This model has been studied with infinite, finite and unknown number of values. When the gambler faces a random number of values, the model is said to have random horizon. We consider the model in which the gambler is given a priori knowledge of the horizon's distribution. Alijani et al. (2020) designed a single-threshold algorithms achieving a ratio of $1/2$ when the random horizon has an increasing hazard rate and is independent of the values. We prove that with a single-threshold, a ratio of $1/2$ is actually achievable for several larger classes of horizon distributions, with the largest being known as the $\mathcal{G}$ class in reliability theory. Moreover, we extend this result to its dual, the $\overline{\mathcal{G}}$ class (which includes the decreasing hazard rate class), and to low-variance horizons. Finally, we construct the first example of a family of horizons, for which multiple thresholds are necessary to achieve a nonzero ratio. We establish that the Secretary Problem optimal stopping rule provides one such algorithm, paving the way towards the study of the model beyond single-threshold algorithms., Comment: 54 pages, 2 figures

We examine sorting algorithms for $n$ elements whose basic operation is comparing $t$ elements simultaneously (a $t$-comparator). We focus on algorithms that use only a single round or two rounds -- comparisons performed in the second round depend on the outcomes of the first round comparators. We design deterministic and randomized algorithms. In the deterministic case, we show an interesting relation to design theory (namely, to 2-Steiner systems), which yields a single-round optimal algorithm for $n=t^{2^k}$ with any $k\ge 1$ and a variety of possible values of $t$. For some values of $t$, however, no algorithm can reach the optimal (information-theoretic) bound on the number of comparators. For this case (and any other $n$ and $t$), we show an algorithm that uses at most three times as many comparators as the theoretical bound. We also design a randomized Las-Vegas two-rounds sorting algorithm for any $n$ and $t$. Our algorithm uses an asymptotically optimal number of $O(\max(\frac{n^{3/2}}{t^2},\frac{n}{t}))$ comparators, with high probability, i.e., with probability at least $1-1/n$. The analysis of this algorithm involves the gradual unveiling of randomness, using a novel technique which we coin the binary tree of deferred randomness.

We introduce the concept of community consensus in the presence of malicious agents using a well-known median-based consensus algorithm. We consider networks that have multiple well-connected regions that we term communities, characterized by specific robustness and minimum degree properties. Prior work derives conditions on properties that are necessary and sufficient for achieving global consensus in a network. This, however, requires the minimum degree of the network graph to be proportional to the number of malicious agents in the network, which is not very practical in large networks. In this work, we present a natural generalization of this previous result. We characterize cases where, although global consensus is not reached, some subsets of agents $V_i$ will still converge to the same values $M_i$ among themselves. To reach this new type of consensus, we define more relaxed requirements in terms of the number of malicious agents in each community, and the number $k$ of edges connecting an agent in a community to agents external to the community.

We continue our study from Lynch and Mallmann-Trenn (Neural Networks, 2021), of how concepts that have hierarchical structure might be represented in brain-like neural networks, how these representations might be used to recognize the concepts, and how these representations might be learned. In Lynch and Mallmann-Trenn (Neural Networks, 2021), we considered simple tree-structured concepts and feed-forward layered networks. Here we extend the model in two ways: we allow limited overlap between children of different concepts, and we allow networks to include feedback edges. For these more general cases, we describe and analyze algorithms for recognition and algorithms for learning.

Prophet inequalities are a central object of study in optimal stopping theory. The goal of the gambler, who cannot see the future, is maximising the expected value of the reward while competing against the expectation of a prophet (the offline maximum). In other words, one seeks to maximise the gambler-to-prophet ratio of the expectations. The model, in which the gambler selects the arrival order first, and then observes the values, is known as Order Selection. In this model a ratio of $0.7251$ is attainable for any instance. Recently, this has been improved up to $0.7258$ by Bubna and Chiplunkar (2023). If the gambler chooses the arrival order (uniformly) at random, we obtain the Random Order model. The worst case ratio over all possible instances has been extensively studied for at least $40$ years. In a computer-assisted proof, Bubna and Chiplunkar (2023) also showed that this ratio is at most $0.7254$ for the Random Order model, thus establishing for the first time that carefully choosing the order, instead of simply taking it at random, benefits the gambler. We give an alternative, non-simulation-assisted proof of this fact, by showing mathematically that in the Random Order model, no algorithm can achieve a ratio larger than $0.7235$. This sets a new state-of-the-art hardness for this model, and establishes more formally that there is a real benefit in choosing the order., Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures

Coordination in a large number of networked robots is a challenging task, especially when robots are constantly moving around the environment and there are malicious attacks within the network. Various approaches in the literature exist for detecting malicious robots, such as message sampling or suspicious behavior analysis. However, these approaches require every robot to sample every other robot in the network, leading to a slow detection process that degrades team performance. This paper introduces a method that significantly decreases the detection time for legitimate robots to identify malicious robots in a scenario where legitimate robots are randomly moving around the environment. Our method leverages the concept of ``Dynamic Crowd Vetting" by utilizing observations from random encounters and trusted neighboring robots' opinions to quickly improve the accuracy of detecting malicious robots. The key intuition is that as long as each legitimate robot accurately estimates the legitimacy of at least some fixed subset of the team, the second-hand information they receive from trusted neighbors is enough to correct any misclassifications and provide accurate trust estimations of the rest of the team. We show that the size of this fixed subset can be characterized as a function of fundamental graph and random walk properties. Furthermore, we formally show that as the number of robots in the team increases the detection time remains constant. We develop a closed form expression for the critical number of time-steps required for our algorithm to successfully identify the true legitimacy of each robot to within a specified failure probability. We consider two simple asynchronous opinion dynamics on arbitrary graphs where every node $u$ has an initial value $\xi_u(0)$. In the first process, the NodeModel, at each time step $t\ge 0$, a random node $u$ and a random sample of $k$ of its neighbours $v_1,v_2,\cdots,v_k$ are selected. Then, $u$ updates its current value $\xi_u(t)$ to $\xi_u(t+1) = \alpha \xi_u(t) + \frac{(1-\alpha)}{k} \sum_{i=1}^k \xi_{v_i}(t)$, where $\alpha \in (0,1)$ and $k\ge 1$ are parameters of the process. In the second process, the EdgeModel, at each step a random pair of adjacent nodes $(u,v)$ is selected, and then node $u$ updates its value equivalently to the NodeModel with $k=1$ and $v$ as the selected neighbour. For both processes, the values of all nodes converge to $F$, a random variable depending on the random choices made in each step. For the NodeModel and regular graphs, and for the EdgeModel and arbitrary graphs, the expectation of $F$ is the average of the initial values $\frac{1}{n}\sum_{u\in V} \xi_u(0)$. For the NodeModel and non-regular graphs, the expectation of $F$ is the degree-weighted average of the initial values. Our results are two-fold. We consider the concentration of $F$ and show tight bounds on the variance of $F$ for regular graphs. We show that, when the initial values do not depend on the number of nodes, then the variance is negligible, hence the nodes are able to estimate the initial average of the node values. Interestingly, this variance does not depend on the graph structure. For the proof we introduce a duality between our processes and a process of two correlated random walks. We also analyse the convergence time for both models and for arbitrary graphs, showing bounds on the time $T_\varepsilon$ required to make all node values `$\varepsilon$-close' to each other. Among the various aspects of algorithmic fairness studied in recent years, the tension between satisfying both \textit{sufficiency} and \textit{separation} -- e.g. the ratios of positive or negative predictive values, and false positive or false negative rates across groups -- has received much attention. Following a debate sparked by COMPAS, a criminal justice predictive system, the academic community has responded by laying out important theoretical understanding, showing that one cannot achieve both with an imperfect predictor when there is no equal distribution of labels across the groups. In this paper, we shed more light on what might be still possible beyond the impossibility -- the existence of a trade-off means we should aim to find a good balance within it. After refining the existing theoretical result, we propose an objective that aims to balance \textit{sufficiency} and \textit{separation} measures, while maintaining similar accuracy levels. We show the use of such an objective in two empirical case studies, one involving a multi-objective framework, and the other fine-tuning of a model pre-trained for accuracy. We show promising results, where better trade-offs are achieved compared to existing alternatives.

Over the years, population protocols with the goal of reaching consensus have been studied in great depth. However, many systems in the real-world do not result in all agents eventually reaching consensus, but rather in the opposite: they converge to a state of rich diversity. Consider for example task allocation in ants. If eventually all ants perform the same task, then the colony will perish (lack of food, no brood care, etc.). Then, it is vital for the survival of the colony to have a diverse set of tasks and enough ants working on each task. What complicates matters is that ants need to switch tasks periodically to adjust the needs of the colony; e.g., when too many foragers fell victim to other ant colonies. Moreover, all tasks are equally important and maybe they need to keep certain proportions in the distribution of the task. How can ants keep a healthy and balanced allocation of tasks? To answer this question, we propose a simple population protocol for $n$ agents on a complete graph and an arbitrary initial distribution of $k$ colours (tasks). We assume that each colour $i$ has an associated weight (importance) $w_i \geq 1$. By denoting $w$ as the sum of the weights of different colours, we show that the protocol converges in $O(w^2 n \log n)$ rounds to a configuration where the number of agents supporting each colour $i$ is concentrated on the fair share $w_in/w$ and will stay concentrated for a large number of rounds, w.h.p. Our protocol has many interesting properties: agents do not need to know other colours and weights in the system, and our protocol requires very little memory per agent. Furthermore, the protocol guarantees fairness meaning that over a long period each agent has each colour roughly a number of times proportional to the weight of the colour. Finally, our protocol also fulfils sustainability meaning that no colour ever vanishes.

We characterize the advantage of using a robot's neighborhood to find and eliminate adversarial robots in the presence of a Sybil attack. We show that by leveraging the opinions of its neighbors on the trustworthiness of transmitted data, robots can detect adversaries with high probability. We characterize a number of communication rounds required to achieve this result to be a function of the communication quality and the proportion of legitimate to malicious robots. This result enables increased resiliency of many multi-robot algorithms. Because our results are finite time and not asymptotic, they are particularly well-suited for problems with a time critical nature. We develop two algorithms, \emph{FindSpoofedRobots} that determines trusted neighbors with high probability, and \emph{FindResilientAdjacencyMatrix} that enables distributed computation of graph properties in an adversarial setting. We apply our methods to a flocking problem where a team of robots must track a moving target in the presence of adversarial robots. We show that by using our algorithms, the team of robots are able to maintain tracking ability of the dynamic target.

We consider online algorithms for the {\em page migration problem} that use predictions, potentially imperfect, to improve their performance. The best known online algorithms for this problem, due to Westbrook'94 and Bienkowski et al'17, have competitive ratios strictly bounded away from 1. In contrast, we show that if the algorithm is given a prediction of the input sequence, then it can achieve a competitive ratio that tends to $1$ as the prediction error rate tends to $0$. Specifically, the competitive ratio is equal to $1+O(q)$, where $q$ is the prediction error rate. We also design a ``fallback option'' that ensures that the competitive ratio of the algorithm for {\em any} input sequence is at most $O(1/q)$. Our result adds to the recent body of work that uses machine learning to improve the performance of ``classic'' algorithms.

We study the problem of randomized information dissemination in networks. We compare the now standard PUSH-PULL protocol, with agent-based alternatives where information is disseminated by a collection of agents performing independent random walks. In the VISIT-EXCHANGE protocol, both nodes and agents store information, and each time an agent visits a node, the two exchange all the information they have. In the MEET-EXCHANGE protocol, only the agents store information, and exchange their information with each agent they meet. We consider the broadcast time of a single piece of information in an $n$-node graph for the above three protocols, assuming a linear number of agents that start from the stationary distribution. We observe that there are graphs on which the agent-based protocols are significantly faster than PUSH-PULL, and graphs where the converse is true. We attribute the good performance of agent-based algorithms to their inherently fair bandwidth utilization, and conclude that, in certain settings, agent-based information dissemination, separately or in combination with PUSH-PULL, can significantly improve the broadcast time. The graphs considered above are highly non-regular. Our main technical result is that on any regular graph of at least logarithmic degree, PUSH-PULL and VISIT-EXCHANGE have the same asymptotic broadcast time. The proof uses a novel coupling argument which relates the random choices of vertices in PUSH-PULL with the random walks in VISIT-EXCHANGE. Further, we show that the broadcast time of MEET-EXCHANGE is asymptotically at least as large as the other two's on all regular graphs, and strictly larger on some regular graphs. We study the question of how concepts that have structure get represented in the brain. Specifically, we introduce a model for hierarchically structured concepts and we show how a biologically plausible neural network can recognize these concepts, and how it can learn them in the first place. Our main goal is to introduce a general framework for these tasks and prove formally how both (recognition and learning) can be achieved. We show that both tasks can be accomplished even in presence of noise. For learning, we analyze Oja's rule formally, a well-known biologically-plausible rule for adjusting the weights of synapses. We complement the learning results with lower bounds asserting that, in order to recognize concepts of a certain hierarchical depth, neural networks must have a corresponding number of layers.

In the French flag problem, initially uncolored cells on a grid must differentiate to become blue, white or red. The goal is for the cells to color the grid as a French flag, i.e., a three-colored triband, in a distributed manner. To solve a generalized version of the problem in a distributed computational setting, we consider two models: a biologically-inspired version that relies on morphogens (diffusing proteins acting as chemical signals) and a more abstract version based on reliable message passing between cellular agents. Much of developmental biology research has focused on concentration-based approaches using morphogens, since morphogen gradients are thought to be an underlying mechanism in tissue patterning. We show that both our model types easily achieve a French ribbon - a French flag in the 1D case. However, extending the ribbon to the 2D flag in the concentration model is somewhat difficult unless each agent has additional positional information. Assuming that cells are are identical, it is impossible to achieve a French flag or even a close approximation. In contrast, using a message-based approach in the 2D case only requires assuming that agents can be represented as constant size state machines. We hope that our insights may lay some groundwork for what kind of message passing abstractions or guarantees, if any, may be useful in analogy to cells communicating at long and short distances to solve patterning problems. In addition, we hope that our models and findings may be of interest in the design of nano-robots.

We study a process of \emph{averaging} in a distributed system with \emph{noisy communication}. Each of the agents in the system starts with some value and the goal of each agent is to compute the average of all the initial values. In each round, one pair of agents is drawn uniformly at random from the whole population, communicates with each other and each of these two agents updates their local value based on their own value and the received message. The communication is noisy and whenever an agent sends any value $v$, the receiving agent receives $v+N$, where $N$ is a zero-mean Gaussian random variable. The two quality measures of interest are (i) the total sum of squares $TSS(t)$, which measures the sum of square distances from the average load to the \emph{initial average} and (ii) $\bar{\phi}(t)$, measures the sum of square distances from the average load to the \emph{running average} (average at time $t$). It is known that the simple averaging protocol---in which an agent sends its current value and sets its new value to the average of the received value and its current value---converges eventually to a state where $\bar{\phi}(t)$ is small. It has been observed that $TSS(t)$, due to the noise, eventually diverges and previous research---mostly in control theory---has focused on showing eventual convergence w.r.t. the running average. We obtain the first probabilistic bounds on the convergence time of $\bar{\phi}(t)$ and precise bounds on the drift of $TSS(t)$ that show that albeit $TSS(t)$ eventually diverges, for a wide and interesting range of parameters, $TSS(t)$ stays small for a number of rounds that is polynomial in the number of agents. Our results extend to the synchronous setting and settings where the agents are restricted to discrete values and perform rounding.

Motivated by crowdsourced computation, peer-grading, and recommendation systems, Braverman, Mao and Weinberg [STOC'16] studied the \emph{query} and \emph{round} complexity of fundamental problems such as finding the maximum (\textsc{max}), finding all elements above a certain value (\textsc{threshold-$v$}) or computing the top$-k$ elements (\textsc{Top}-$k$) in a noisy environment. For example, consider the task of selecting papers for a conference. This task is challenging due the crowdsourcing nature of peer reviews: the results of reviews are noisy and it is necessary to parallelize the review process as much as possible. We study the noisy value model and the noisy comparison model: In the \emph{noisy value model}, a reviewer is asked to evaluate a single element: "What is the value of paper $i$?" (\eg accept). In the \emph{noisy comparison model} (introduced in the seminal work of Feige, Peleg, Raghavan and Upfal [SICOMP'94]) a reviewer is asked to do a pairwise comparison: "Is paper $i$ better than paper $j$?" In this paper, we show optimal worst-case query complexity for the \textsc{max},\textsc{threshold-$v$} and \textsc{Top}-$k$ problems. For \textsc{max} and \textsc{Top}-$k$, we obtain optimal worst-case upper and lower bounds on the round vs query complexity in both models. For \textsc{threshold}-$v$, we obtain optimal query complexity and nearly-optimal round complexity, where $k$ is the size of the output) for both models. We then go beyond the worst-case and address the question of the importance of knowledge of the instance by providing, for a large range of parameters, instance-optimal algorithms with respect to the query complexity. Furthermore, we show that the value model is strictly easier than the comparison model.

We study the problem of distributed task allocation inspired by the behavior of social insects, which perform task allocation in a setting of limited capabilities and noisy environment feedback. We assume that each task has a demand that should be satisfied but not exceeded, i.e., there is an optimal number of ants that should be working on this task at a given time. The goal is to assign a near-optimal number of workers to each task in a distributed manner and without explicit access to the values of the demands nor the number of ants working on the task. We seek to answer the question of how the quality of task allocation depends on the accuracy of assessing whether too many (overload) or not enough (lack) ants are currently working on a given task. Concretely, we address the open question of solving task allocation in the model where each ant receives feedback that depends on the deficit defined as the (possibly negative) difference between the optimal demand and the current number of workers in the task. The feedback is modeled as a random variable that takes value lack or overload with probability given by a sigmoid of the deficit. Each ants receives the feedback independently, but the higher the overload or lack of workers for a task, the more likely it is that all the ants will receive the same, correct feedback from this task; the closer the deficit is to zero, the less reliable the feedback becomes. We measure the performance of task allocation algorithms using the notion of regret, defined as the absolute value of the deficit summed over all tasks and summed over time. We propose a simple, constant-memory, self-stabilizing, distributed algorithm that quickly converges from any initial distribution to a near-optimal assignment. We also show that our algorithm works not only under stochastic noise but also in an adversarial noise setting.

We give a simple distributed algorithm for computing adjacency matrix eigenvectors for the communication graph in an asynchronous gossip model. We show how to use this algorithm to give state-of-the-art asynchronous community detection algorithms when the communication graph is drawn from the well-studied stochastic block model. Our methods also apply to a natural alternative model of randomized communication, where nodes within a community communicate more frequently than nodes in different communities. Our analysis simplifies and generalizes prior work by forging a connection between asynchronous eigenvector computation and Oja's algorithm for streaming principal component analysis. We hope that our work serves as a starting point for building further connections between the analysis of stochastic iterative methods, like Oja's algorithm, and work on asynchronous and gossip-type algorithms for distributed computation.

Given a set of $n$ points in a $d$-dimensional space, we seek to compute the skyline, i.e., those points that are not strictly dominated by any other point, using few comparisons between elements. We adopt the noisy comparison model [FRPU94] where comparisons fail with constant probability and confidence can be increased through independent repetitions of a comparison. In this model motivated by Crowdsourcing applications, Groz & Milo [GM15] show three bounds on the query complexity for the skyline problem. We improve significantly on that state of the art and provide two output-sensitive algorithms computing the skyline with respective query complexity $O(nd\log (dk/\delta))$ and $O(ndk\log (k/\delta))$ where $k$ is the size of the skyline and $\delta$ the expected probability that our algorithm fails to return the correct answer. These results are tight for low dimensions.

Hierarchical clustering is a recursive partitioning of a dataset into clusters at an increasingly finer granularity. Motivated by the fact that most work on hierarchical clustering was based on providing algorithms, rather than optimizing a specific objective, Dasgupta framed similarity-based hierarchical clustering as a combinatorial optimization problem, where a `good' hierarchical clustering is one that minimizes some cost function. He showed that this cost function has certain desirable properties. We take an axiomatic approach to defining `good' objective functions for both similarity and dissimilarity-based hierarchical clustering. We characterize a set of "admissible" objective functions (that includes Dasgupta's one) that have the property that when the input admits a `natural' hierarchical clustering, it has an optimal value. Equipped with a suitable objective function, we analyze the performance of practical algorithms, as well as develop better algorithms. For similarity-based hierarchical clustering, Dasgupta showed that the divisive sparsest-cut approach achieves an $O(\log^{3/2} n)$-approximation. We give a refined analysis of the algorithm and show that it in fact achieves an $O(\sqrt{\log n})$-approx. (Charikar and Chatziafratis independently proved that it is a $O(\sqrt{\log n})$-approx.). This improves upon the LP-based $O(\log n)$-approx. of Roy and Pokutta. For dissimilarity-based hierarchical clustering, we show that the classic average-linkage algorithm gives a factor 2 approx., and provide a simple and better algorithm that gives a factor 3/2 approx.. Finally, we consider `beyond-worst-case' scenario through a generalisation of the stochastic block model for hierarchical clustering. We show that Dasgupta's cost function has desirable properties for these inputs and we provide a simple 1 + o(1)-approximation in this setting.

We study consensus processes on the complete graph of $n$ nodes. Initially, each node supports one from up to n opinions. Nodes randomly and in parallel sample the opinions of constant many nodes. Based on these samples, they use an update rule to change their own opinion. The goal is to reach consensus, a configuration where all nodes support the same opinion. We compare two well-known update rules: 2-Choices and 3-Majority. In the former, each node samples two nodes and adopts their opinion if they agree. In the latter, each node samples three nodes: If an opinion is supported by at least two samples the node adopts it, otherwise it randomly adopts one of the sampled opinions. Known results for these update rules focus on initial configurations with a limited number of colors (say $n^{1/3}$ ), or typically assume a bias, where one opinion has a much larger support than any other. For such biased configurations, the time to reach consensus is roughly the same for 2-Choices and 3-Majority. Interestingly, we prove that this is no longer true for configurations with a large number of initial colors. In particular, we show that 3-Majority reaches consensus with high probability in $O(n^{3/4}\log^{7/8}n)$ rounds, while 2-Choices can need $\Omega(n/\log n)$ rounds. We thus get the first unconditional sublinear bound for 3-Majority and the first result separating the consensus time of these processes. Along the way, we develop a framework that allows a fine-grained comparison between consensus processes from a specific class. We believe that this framework might help to classify the performance of more consensus processes.

We consider the problem of estimating the graph size, where one is given only local access to the graph. We formally define a query model in which one starts with a \emph{seed} node and is allowed to make queries about neighbours of nodes that have already been seen. In the case of undirected graphs, an estimator of Katzir et al. (2014) based on a sample from the stationary distribution $\pi$ uses $O\left(\frac{1}{\|\pi\|_2} + \text{davg}\right)$ queries, we prove that this is tight. In addition, we establish this as a lower bound even when the algorithm is allowed to crawl the graph arbitrarily, the results of Katzir et al. give an upper bound that is worse by a multiplicative factor $t_\text{mix} \cdot \log(n)$. The picture becomes significantly different in the case of directed graphs. We show that without strong assumptions on the graph structure, the number of nodes cannot be predicted to within a constant multiplicative factor without using a number of queries that are at least linear in the number of nodes, in particular, rapid mixing and small diameter, properties that most real-world networks exhibit, do not suffice. The question of interest is whether any algorithm can beat breadth-first search. We introduce a new parameter, generalising the well-studied conductance, such that if a suitable bound on it exists and is known to the algorithm, the number of queries required is sublinear in the number of edges, we show that this is tight.

Coalescing random walks is a fundamental stochastic process, where a set of particles perform independent discrete-time random walks on an undirected graph. Whenever two or more particles meet at a given node, they merge and continue as a single random walk. The coalescence time is defined as the expected time until only one particle remains, starting from one particle at every node. Despite recent progress the coalescence time for graphs such as binary trees, d-dimensional tori, hypercubes and more generally, vertex-transitive graphs, remains unresolved. We provide a powerful toolkit that results in tight bounds for various topologies including the aforementioned ones. The meeting time is defined as the worst-case expected time required for two random walks to arrive at the same node at the same time. As a general result, we establish that for graphs whose meeting time is only marginally larger than the mixing time (a factor of log^2 n), the coalescence time of n random walks equals the meeting time up to constant factors. This upper bound is complemented by the construction of a graph family demonstrating that this result is the best possible up to constant factors. For almost-regular graphs, we bound the coalescence time by the hitting time, resolving the discrete-time variant of a conjecture by Aldous for this class of graphs. Finally, we prove that for any graph the coalescence time is bounded by O(n^3) (which is tight for the Barbell graph); surprisingly even such a basic question about the coalescing time was not answered before this work. By duality, our results give bounds on the voter model and therefore give bounds on the consensus time in arbitrary undirected graphs. We also establish a new bound on the hitting time and cover time of regular graphs, improving and tightening previous results by Broder and Karlin, as well as those by Aldous and Fill.

A fundamental problem in distributed computing is the distribution of requests to a set of uniform servers without a centralized controller. Classically, such problems are modeled as static balls into bins processes, where $m$ balls (tasks) are to be distributed to $n$ bins (servers). In a seminal work, Azar et al. proposed the sequential strategy \greedy{d} for $n=m$. When thrown, a ball queries the load of $d$ random bins and is allocated to a least loaded of these. Azar et al. showed that $d=2$ yields an exponential improvement compared to $d=1$. Berenbrink et al. extended this to $m\gg n$, showing that the maximal load difference is independent of $m$ for $d=2$ (in contrast to $d=1$). We propose a new variant of an \emph{infinite} balls into bins process. Each round an expected number of $\lambda n$ new balls arrive and are distributed (in parallel) to the bins. Each non-empty bin deletes one of its balls. This setting models a set of servers processing incoming requests, where clients can query a server's current load but receive no information about parallel requests. We study the \greedy{d} distribution scheme in this setting and show a strong self-stabilizing property: For \emph{any} arrival rate $\lambda=\lambda(n)<1$, the system load is time-invariant. Moreover, for \emph{any} (even super-exponential) round $t$, the maximum system load is (w.h.p.) $O(\frac{1}{1-\lambda}\cdot\log\frac{n}{1-\lambda})$ for $d=1$ and $O(\log\frac{n}{1-\lambda})$ for $d=2$. In particular, \greedy{2} has an exponentially smaller system load for high arrival rates.

In the voter model, each node of a graph has an opinion, and in every round each node chooses independently a random neighbour and adopts its opinion. We are interested in the consensus time, which is the first point in time where all nodes have the same opinion. We consider dynamic graphs in which the edges are rewired in every round (by an adversary) giving rise to the graph sequence $G_1, G_2, \dots $, where we assume that $G_i$ has conductance at least $\phi_i$. We assume that the degrees of nodes don't change over time as one can show that the consensus time can become super-exponential otherwise. In the case of a sequence of $d$-regular graphs, we obtain asymptotically tight results. Even for some static graphs, such as the cycle, our results improve the state of the art. Here we show that the expected number of rounds until all nodes have the same opinion is bounded by $O(m/(d_{min} \cdot \phi))$, for any graph with $m$ edges, conductance $\phi$, and degrees at least $d_{min}$. In addition, we consider a biased dynamic voter model, where each opinion $i$ is associated with a probability $P_i$, and when a node chooses a neighbour with that opinion, it adopts opinion $i$ with probability $P_i$ (otherwise the node keeps its current opinion). We show for any regular dynamic graph, that if there is an $\epsilon>0$ difference between the highest and second highest opinion probabilities, and at least $\Omega(\log n)$ nodes have initially the opinion with the highest probability, then all nodes adopt w.h.p. that opinion. We obtain a bound on the convergences time, which becomes $O(\log n/\phi)$ for static graphs.

We consider distributed plurality consensus in a complete graph of size $n$ with $k$ initial opinions. We design an efficient and simple protocol in the asynchronous communication model that ensures that all nodes eventually agree on the initially most frequent opinion. In this model, each node is equipped with a random Poisson clock with parameter $\lambda=1$. Whenever a node's clock ticks, it samples some neighbors, uniformly at random and with replacement, and adjusts its opinion according to the sample. A prominent example is the so-called two-choices algorithm in the synchronous model, where in each round, every node chooses two neighbors uniformly at random, and if the two sampled opinions coincide, then that opinion is adopted. This protocol is very efficient and well-studied when $k=2$. If $k=O(n^\varepsilon)$ for some small $\varepsilon$, we show that it converges to the initial plurality opinion within $O(k \cdot \log{n})$ rounds, w.h.p., as long as the initial difference between the largest and second largest opinion is $\Omega(\sqrt{n \log n})$. On the other side, we show that there are cases in which $\Omega(k)$ rounds are needed, w.h.p. One can beat this lower bound in the synchronous model by combining the two-choices protocol with randomized broadcasting. Our main contribution is a non-trivial adaptation of this approach to the asynchronous model. If the support of the most frequent opinion is at least $(1+\varepsilon)$ times that of the second-most frequent one and $k=O(\exp(\log{n}/\log \log{n}))$, then our protocol achieves the best possible run time of $O(\log n)$, w.h.p. We relax full synchronicity by allowing $o(n)$ nodes to be poorly synchronized, and the well synchronized nodes are only required to be within a certain time difference from one another. We enforce this synchronicity by introducing a novel gadget into the protocol.

We consider \emph{plurality consensus} in a network of $n$ nodes. Initially, each node has one of $k$ opinions. The nodes execute a (randomized) distributed protocol to agree on the plurality opinion (the opinion initially supported by the most nodes). Nodes in such networks are often quite cheap and simple, and hence one seeks protocols that are not only fast but also simple and space efficient. Typically, protocols depend heavily on the employed communication mechanism, which ranges from sequential (only one pair of nodes communicates at any time) to fully parallel (all nodes communicate with all their neighbors at once) communication and everything in-between. We propose a framework to design protocols for a multitude of communication mechanisms. We introduce protocols that solve the plurality consensus problem and are with probability 1-o(1) both time and space efficient. Our protocols are based on an interesting relationship between plurality consensus and distributed load balancing. This relationship allows us to design protocols that generalize the state of the art for a large range of problem parameters. In particular, we obtain the same bounds as the recent result of Alistarh et al. (who consider only two opinions on a clique) using a much simpler protocol that generalizes naturally to general graphs and multiple opinions.

In the deterministic binary majority process we are given a simple graph where each node has one out of two initial opinions. In every round, every node adopts the majority opinion among its neighbors. By using a potential argument first discovered by Goles and Olivos (1980), it is known that this process always converges in $O(|E|)$ rounds to a two-periodic state in which every node either keeps its opinion or changes it in every round. It has been shown by Frischknecht, Keller, and Wattenhofer (2013) that the $O(|E|)$ bound on the convergence time of the deterministic binary majority process is indeed tight even for dense graphs. However, in many graphs such as the complete graph, from any initial opinion assignment, the process converges in just a constant number of rounds. By carefully exploiting the structure of the potential function by Goles and Olivos (1980), we derive a new upper bound on the convergence time of the deterministic binary majority process that accounts for such exceptional cases. We show that it is possible to identify certain modules of a graph $G$ in order to obtain a new graph $G^\Delta$ with the property that the worst-case convergence time of $G^\Delta$ is an upper bound on that of $G$. Moreover, even though our upper bound can be computed in linear time, we show that, given an integer $k$, it is NP-hard to decide whether there exists an initial opinion assignment for which it takes more than $k$ rounds to converge to the two-periodic state., Comment: full version of brief announcement accepted at DISC'15

We consider the problem of deterministic load balancing of tokens in the discrete model. A set of $n$ processors is connected into a $d$-regular undirected network. In every time step, each processor exchanges some of its tokens with each of its neighbors in the network. The goal is to minimize the discrepancy between the number of tokens on the most-loaded and the least-loaded processor as quickly as possible. Rabani et al. (1998) present a general technique for the analysis of a wide class of discrete load balancing algorithms. Their approach is to characterize the deviation between the actual loads of a discrete balancing algorithm with the distribution generated by a related Markov chain. The Markov chain can also be regarded as the underlying model of a continuous diffusion algorithm. Rabani et al. showed that after time $T = O(\log (Kn)/\mu)$, any algorithm of their class achieves a discrepancy of $O(d\log n/\mu)$, where $\mu$ is the spectral gap of the transition matrix of the graph, and $K$ is the initial load discrepancy in the system. In this work we identify some natural additional conditions on deterministic balancing algorithms, resulting in a class of algorithms reaching a smaller discrepancy. This class contains well-known algorithms, eg., the Rotor-Router. Specifically, we introduce the notion of cumulatively fair load-balancing algorithms where in any interval of consecutive time steps, the total number of tokens sent out over an edge by a node is the same (up to constants) for all adjacent edges. We prove that algorithms which are cumulatively fair and where every node retains a sufficient part of its load in each step, achieve a discrepancy of $O(\min\{d\sqrt{\log n/\mu},d\sqrt{n}\})$ in time $O(T)$. We also show that in general neither of these assumptions may be omitted without increasing discrepancy. We then show by a combinatorial potential reduction argument that any cumulatively fair scheme satisfying some additional assumptions achieves a discrepancy of $O(d)$ almost as quickly as the continuous diffusion process. In the Palindrome Problem one tries to find all palindromes (palindromic substrings) in a given string. A palindrome is defined as a string which reads forwards the same as backwards, e.g., the string "racecar". A related problem is the Longest Palindromic Substring Problem in which finding an arbitrary one of the longest palindromes in the given string suffices. We regard the streaming version of both problems. In the streaming model the input arrives over time and at every point in time we are only allowed to use sublinear space. The main algorithms in this paper are the following: The first one is a one-pass randomized algorithm that solves the Palindrome Problem. It has an additive error and uses $O(\sqrt n$) space. The second algorithm is a two-pass algorithm which determines the exact locations of all longest palindromes. It uses the first algorithm as the first pass. The third algorithm is again a one-pass randomized algorithm, which solves the Longest Palindromic Substring Problem. It has a multiplicative error using only $O(\log(n))$ space. We also give two variants of the first algorithm which solve other related practical problems.

We present and study a new model for energy-aware and profit-oriented scheduling on a single processor. The processor features dynamic speed scaling as well as suspension to a sleep mode. Jobs arrive over time, are preemptable, and have different sizes, values, and deadlines. On the arrival of a new job, the scheduler may either accept or reject the job. Accepted jobs need a certain energy investment to be finished in time, while rejected jobs cause costs equal to their values. Here, power consumption at speed $s$ is given by $P(s)=s^{\alpha}+\beta$ and the energy investment is power integrated over time. Additionally, the scheduler may decide to suspend the processor to a sleep mode in which no energy is consumed, though awaking entails fixed transition costs $\gamma$. The objective is to minimize the total value of rejected jobs plus the total energy. Our model combines aspects from advanced energy conservation techniques (namely speed scaling and sleep states) and profit-oriented scheduling models. We show that \emph{rejection-oblivious} schedulers (whose rejection decisions are not based on former decisions) have -- in contrast to the model without sleep states -- an unbounded competitive ratio w.r.t\text{.} the processor parameters $\alpha$ and $\beta$. It turns out that the worst-case performance of such schedulers depends linearly on the jobs' value densities (the ratio between a job's value and its work). We give an algorithm whose competitiveness nearly matches this lower bound. If the maximum value density is not too large, the competitiveness becomes $\alpha^{\alpha}+2e\alpha$. Also, we show that it suffices to restrict the value density of low-value jobs only.
