Abstract

We report that the second and third harmonic signal reductions with insulator film surface coverage over a gold substrate gives a measure of the electron density in the spill out volume of the insulator, which is dubbed metal insulator gap states. For metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures we observe enhancement saturation and quenching of the third harmonic efficiencies well above the efficiencies for metal-insulator (MI) samples. The measured optical harmonics of scattered light from MI and MIM systems are compared with detailed simulations of the nonlinear interactions including free electron spill out into the insulator, nonlocal and electron quantum tunneling effects. Gold coated substrates are covered with variable thin insulator film thicknesses using atomic layer deposition. Optical harmonics of light scattered from two insulator materials (ZnO and Al2O3) are measured in our experiments. Abstract

The influence of Y2O3 addition on densification, physical, mechanical, thermal, and oxidation properties of ZrB2-20 vol.%SiC- (0-15 vol.%Y2O3) composites was investigated in the present study. Powders of ZrB2-SiC-Y2O3 were cold compacted uniaxially, and green compacts were densified by pressure-less sintering. Results indicate that Y2O3 addition improves the sinterability and mechanical properties, whereas it diminishes the electrical and thermal conductivities of the investigated composites. Removal of surface oxides by the additives and segregation of Y2O3 particles at the triple junction of the ZrB2 grains enhances densification. Reduction in porosity (9.5-4.2%) through Y2O3 addition (0-15 vol.%) improves hardness (up to 52%), relative elastic modulus (up to 9%), and fracture toughness (up to 26%) of the investigated composites. The electrical conductivity has been observed to vary in the range of 2.67-1.92 106 S/m, and thermal diffusivity values decrease with an increase in Y2O3 content and temperature. Oxidation studies indicate that the ZrB2-SiC composite shows better oxidation resistance than other investigated composites. Abstract

Foliar blast disease in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) caused by Magnaporthe grisea once considered as a minor disease, has become major threat for pearl millet cultivation during recent decade in almost all pearl millet growing areas. The present study is an attempt to understand the inheritance of foliar blast resistance in pearl millet against the natural inoculum of Magnaporthe grisea and also against artificial inoculum of its devastating strain PMg_DI. The experiment was conducted at ICRISAT, Hyderabad and IARI, New Delhi during 2017-19. F2 and backcross populations derived from a susceptible genotype ICMB 95444 and two resistant lines PPMI-10018 and PPMI-2464 were used. Screening of individual plant in F1s, F2s, BCP1s (susceptible parent × F1) and BCP2s (resistant parent × F1) under field and controlled conditions indicated that the resistance is governed by a single dominant gene. The test of allelism was conducted by crossing the resistant parents. No segregation for resistance was observed in F2 generation when screened against the natural inoculum of Magnaporthe grisea and its strain PMg_DI. This indicates that both the resistant parents possess the same gene.

Abstract

One of the common issues in production scheduling is the flow shop sequencing issue. A specific type of manufacturing process follows a predetermined linear structure in a flow shop. To solve a flow shop problem in a static workshop, the goal of this study is to determine the shortest possible total processing time (make-span) for a sequence of 'n' tasks on 'm' machines. The suggested method is based on how each work slopes as it moves from the first to the last machine. This method is contrasted with four popular heuristics (Palmer, CDS, Dannenbring, NEH). The findings of the study for 'n' x 'm' flow shop sequencing problems show that the proposed method is effective and shows a promising amount of progress when compared to the other four heuristic strategies. Abstract

Inconel718 (In718) Nickel based super alloy is widely used in aerospace applications, marine and defensive applications, In most of the cases the products are subjected to different types of loads in their applications. The knowledge of mechanical properties is essential for the mechanical engineer, working with materials. In the current research, the samples are modeled using NX software and fabricated in two different orientations, Horizontal (thickness in z-direction) and Vertical (length in z-direction) by using DMLS process. The fabricated samples are then tested for their tensile strength, compression strength, Impact strength, Hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. The results obtained from both the orientations clearly indicate that the tensile strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance are high for horizontally fabricated samples and Hardness, Compression strength, Impact resistance are high for vertically fabricated samples. Abstract

Alternaria leaf spot caused by Alternaria helianthi has been considered as economically important disease. The present study was carried out to identify resistant or moderately resistant genotypes against the Alternaria leaf spot in field screening and artificial screening. Out of 115 genotypes screened in field 31 genotypes were moderately resistant, 60 genotypes were susceptible whereas 24 genotypes were highly susceptible. Resistance to Alternaria is reported to exhibit differential reactions with the environment, hence field screening alone is insufficient while choosing genotypes for further resistance breeding programme. Therefore genotypes which showed moderate resistance (31) and high susceptibility (24) were screened artificially, along with 4 checks. Moderate resistant reaction for Alternaria leaf blight disease was observed in 1B, COSF 7B, CSFI 5083, CSFI 5181, CSFI 5213, CSFI 5276, CSFI 5292, CSFI 5336, POP 449-1-2-4, CSFI 13034, CSFI 13043 and TNHSF 239-68-1-1-1, when artificially screened. These genotypes may be evaluated in hot spot areas along with the resistant check to confirm their disease reaction. Hence these genotypes are considered as potential parents for Alternaria resistance breeding programme.

Abstract

The prediction of a difficult cholecystectomy has traditionally been based on certain pre-operative clinical and imaging factors. Most of the previous literature reported small patient cohorts and have not used an objective measure of operative difficulty. The aim of this study was to develop a pre-operative score to predict difficult cholecystectomy, as defined by a validated intra-operative difficulty grading scale. Two cohorts from prospectively maintained databases of patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy were analysed: the CholeS Study (8755 patients) and a single surgeon series (4089 patients). Factors potentially predictive of difficulty were correlated to the Nassar intra-operative difficulty scale. A multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was then used to identify factors that were independently associated with difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy, defined as operative difficulty grades 3 to 5. The resulting model was then converted to a risk score, and validated on both internal and external datasets. Increasing age and ASA classification, male gender, diagnosis of CBD stone or cholecystitis, thick-walled gallbladders, CBD dilation, use of pre-operative ERCP and non-elective operations were found to be significant independent predictors of difficult cases. Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the correlation between agronomic traits and seed yield of sunflower hybrids and also to determine the direct and indirect effects of analysed traits on seed yield. Correlation studies revealed that days to 50 % flowering, plant height, head diameter, volume weight, seed yield per plant and oil content were important selection indices for both oil and seed yield improvement. Alternaria leaf spot severity had negative and significant correlation on seed yield per plant, oil content and oil yield per plant. This indicated the importance of resistance breeding for Alternaria leaf spot disease. The path analysis revealed that traits namely; days to 50 % flowering, head diameter, oil content, plant height and Alternaria leaf spot severity were important selection indices. Though the correlation analysis showed that 100-seed weight and volume weight were important, the path analysis indicated that these traits were less important

Abstract

We explore different 3D imaging techniques suitable for topographical measurement of partially reflective metal surfaces produced in an additive manufacturing environment. Three candidate techniques are investigated: digital holography, ptychographic coherent diffractive imaging, and structured light. The pros and cons of each method in terms of applicability in the AM environment are discussed. Selected simulation results and experimental findings are reported.

Abstract

Reproductive stage frost poses a major constraint for wheat production in countries such as Australia. However, little progress has been made in identifying key genes to overcome the constraint. In the present study, a severe frost event hit two large-scale field trials consisting of six doubled haploid (DH) wheat populations at reproductive stage (young microspore stage) in Western Australia, leading to the identification of 30 robust frost QTL on 17 chromosomes. The major 18 QTL with the phenotype variation over 9.5% were located on 13 chromosomes including 2A, 2B, 2D, 3A, 4A, 4B, 4D, 5A, 5D, 6D, 7A, 7B and 7D. Most frost QTL were closely linked to the QTL of anthesis, maturity, Zadok stages as well as linked to anthesis related genes. Out of those, six QTL were repetitively detected on the homologous regions on 2B, 4B, 4D, 5A, 5D, 7A in more than two populations. Results showed that the frost damage is associated with alleles of Vrn-A1a, Vrn-D1a, Rht-B1b, Rht-D1b, and the high copy number of Ppd-B1. However, anthesis QTL and anthesis related genes of Vrn-B1a and TaFT3-1B on chromosomes 5B and 1B did not lead to frost damage, indicating that these early-flowering phenotype related genes are compatible with frost tolerance and thus can be utilised in breeding. Our results also indicate that wild-type alleles Rht-B1a and Rht-D1a can be used when breeding for frost-tolerant varieties without delaying flowering time.
