We present an analysis showcasing how the Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS), a proposed NASA Probe-class mission, will significantly increase our understanding of supermassive black holes undergoing mergers -- from kpc to sub-pc scales. In particular, the AXIS point spread function, field of view, and effective area are expected to result in (1) the detection of hundreds to thousands of new dual AGNs across the redshift range 0 < z < 5 and (2) blind searches for binary AGNs that are exhibiting merger signatures in their light curves and spectra. AXIS will detect some of the highest-redshift dual AGNs to date, over a large range of physical separations. The large sample of AGN pairs detected by AXIS (over a magnitude more than currently known) will result in the first X-ray study that quantifies the frequency of dual AGNs as a function of redshift up to z = 4., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures. The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) promises revolutionary science in the X-ray and multi-messenger time domain. AXIS will leverage excellent spatial resolution (<1.5 arcsec), sensitivity (80x that of Swift), and a large collecting area (5-10x that of Chandra) across a 24-arcmin diameter field of view to discover and characterize a wide range of X-ray transients from supernova-shock breakouts to tidal disruption events to highly variable supermassive black holes. The observatory's ability to localize and monitor faint X-ray sources opens up new opportunities to hunt for counterparts to distant binary neutron star mergers, fast radio bursts, and exotic phenomena like fast X-ray transients. AXIS will offer a response time of <2 hours to community alerts, enabling studies of gravitational wave sources, high-energy neutrino emitters, X-ray binaries, magnetars, and other targets of opportunity. A fundamental goal of modern-day astrophysics is to understand the connection between supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and galaxy evolution. Merging galaxies offer one of the most dramatic channels for galaxy evolution known, capable of driving inflows of gas into galactic nuclei, potentially fueling both star formation and central SMBH activity. Dual active galactic nuclei (dual AGNs) in late-stage mergers with nuclear pair separations $<10$ kpc are thus ideal candidates to study SMBH growth along the merger sequence since they coincide with the most transformative period for galaxies. However, dual AGNs can be extremely difficult to confirm and study. Hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) studies offer a relatively contamination-free tool for probing the dense obscuring environments predicted to surround the majority of dual AGN in late-stage mergers. To date, only a handful of the brightest and closest systems have been studied at these energies due to the demanding instrumental requirements involved. We demonstrate the unique capabilities of HEX-P to spatially resolve the soft and - for the first time - hard X-ray counterparts of closely-separated ($\sim2''-5''$) dual AGNs in the local Universe. By incorporating state-of-the-art physical torus models, we reproduce realistic broadband X-ray spectra expected for deeply embedded accreting SMBHs. During the outbursts of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs), their accretion flows transition through several states. The source luminosity rises in the hard state, dominated by non-thermal emission, before transitioning to the blackbody-dominated soft state. As the luminosity decreases, the source transitions back into the hard state and fades to quiescence. This picture does not always hold, as $\approx$ 40$\%$ of the outbursts never leave the hard state. Identifying the physics that govern state transitions remains one of the outstanding open questions in black hole astrophysics. In this paper we present an analysis of archival RXTE data of multiple outbursts of GX 339-4. We compare the properties of the X-ray variability and time-averaged energy spectrum and demonstrate that the variability (quantified by the power spectral hue) systematically evolves $\approx$ 10-40 days ahead of the canonical state transition (quantified by a change in spectral hardness); no such evolution is found in hard state only outbursts. This indicates that the X-ray variability can be used to predict if and when the hard-to-soft state transition will occur. Finally, we find a similar behavior in ten outbursts of four additional BHXRBs with more sparse observational coverage. Based on these findings, we suggest that state transitions in BHXRBs might be driven by a change in the turbulence in the outer regions of the disk, leading to a dramatic change in variability. This change is only seen in the spectrum days to weeks later, as the fluctuations propagate inwards towards the corona., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The degree to which the thin accretion disks of black hole X-ray binaries are truncated during hard spectral states remains a contentious open question in black hole astrophysics. During its singular observed outburst in $2009\mbox{--}2010$, the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1752-223 spent $\sim1$~month in a long-stable hard spectral state at a luminosity of $\sim0.02\mbox{--}0.1~L_{\rm Edd}$. It was observed with 56 RXTE pointings during this period, with simultaneous Swift-XRT daily coverage during the first 10 days of the RXTE observations. Whilst reflection modeling has been extensively explored in the analysis of these data, there is a disagreement surrounding the geometry of the accretion disk and corona implied by the reflection features. We re-examine the combined, high signal-to-noise, simultaneous Swift and RXTE observations, and perform extensive reflection modeling with the latest relxill suite of reflection models, including newer high disk density models. We show that reflection modeling requires that the disk be within $\sim5~R_{\rm ISCO}$ during the hard spectral state, whilst weaker constraints from the thermal disk emission imply higher truncation ($R_{\rm in}=6\mbox{--}80~R_{\rm ISCO}$). We also explore more complex coronal continuum models, allowing for two Comptonization components instead of one, and show that the reflection features still require only a mildly truncated disk. The scaling relations between the black hole (BH) mass and soft lag properties for both active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and BH X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) suggest the same underlying physical mechanism at work in accreting BH systems spanning a broad range of mass. However, the low-mass end of AGNs has never been explored in detail. In this work, we extend the existing scaling relations to lower-mass AGNs, which serve as anchors between the normal-mass AGNs and BHXRBs. For this purpose, we construct a sample of low-mass AGNs ($M_{\rm BH}<3\times 10^{6} M_{\rm \odot}$) from the XMM-Newton archive and measure frequency-resolved time delays between the soft (0.3-1 keV) and hard (1-4 keV) X-ray emissions. We report that the soft band lags behind the hard band emission at high frequencies $\sim[1.3-2.6]\times 10^{-3}$ Hz, which is interpreted as a sign of reverberation from the inner accretion disc in response to the direct coronal emission. At low frequencies ($\sim[3-8]\times 10^{-4}$ Hz), the hard band lags behind the soft band variations, which we explain in the context of the inward propagation of luminosity fluctuations through the corona. Assuming a lamppost geometry for the corona, we find that the X-ray source of the sample extends at an average height and radius of $\sim 10r_{\rm g}$ and $\sim 6r_{\rm g}$, respectively. Our results confirm that the scaling relations between the BH mass and soft lag amplitude/frequency derived for higher-mass AGNs can safely extrapolate to lower-mass AGNs, and the accretion process is indeed independent of the BH mass., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, Published in MNRAS

We present a broadband spectral study of the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H~0323+342 based on multi-epoch observations performed with NuSTAR on 2014 March 15, and two simultaneous observations performed with Suzaku and Swift on 2009 July 26 and 2013 March 1. We found the presence of a strong soft X-ray excess emission, a broad but weak Fe line and hard X-ray excess emission. We used the blurred reflection (relxill) and the intrinsic disc Comptonization (optxagnf), two physically motivated models, to describe the broadband spectra and to disentangle the disk/corona and jet emission. The relxill model is mainly constrained by the strong soft X-ray excess although the model failed to predict this excess when fitted above 3keV and extrapolated to lower energies. The joint spectral analysis of the three datasets above 3keV with this model resulted in a high black hole spin ($a>0.9$) and moderate reflection fraction $R\sim 0.5$. The optxagnf model fitted to the two simultaneous datasets resulted in an excess emission in the UV band. The simultaneous UV-to-hard X-ray spectra of 1H~0323+342 are best described by a model consisting of a primary X-ray power-law continuum with $\Gamma \sim 1.8$, a blurred reflection component with $R\sim 0.5$, Comptonised disk emission as the soft X-ray excess, optical/UV emission from a standard accretion disk around a black hole of mass $\sim 10^7{\rm M_{\odot}}$ and a steep power law ($\Gamma \sim 3-3.5$) component, most likely the jet emission in the UV band. The fractional RMS variability spectra suggest that both the soft excess and the powerlaw component are variable in nature., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures and 5 tables

We present the first results from a detailed spectral-timing analysis of a long ($\sim$130 ks) XMM-Newton observation and quasi-simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift observations of the highly-accreting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1044. The broadband (0.3$-$50 keV) spectrum reveals the presence of a strong soft X-ray excess emission below $\sim$1.5 keV, iron K$_{\alpha}$ emission complex at $\sim$6$-$7 keV and a `Compton hump' at $\sim$15$-$30 keV. We find that the relativistic reflection from a high-density accretion disc with a broken power-law emissivity profile can simultaneously explain the soft X-ray excess, highly ionized broad iron line and the Compton hump. At low frequencies ($[2-6]\times10^{-5}$ Hz), the power-law continuum dominated 1.5$-$5 keV band lags behind the reflection dominated 0.3$-$1 keV band, which is explained with a combination of propagation fluctuation and Comptonization processes, while at higher frequencies ($[1-2]\times10^{-4}$ Hz), we detect a soft lag which is interpreted as a signature of X-ray reverberation from the accretion disc. The fractional root-mean-squared (rms) variability of the source decreases with energy and is well described by two variable components: a less variable relativistic disc reflection and a more variable direct coronal emission. Our combined spectral-timing analyses suggest that the observed broadband X-ray variability of Mrk~1044 is mainly driven by variations in the location or geometry of the optically thin, hot corona., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures, 4 tables, Published in MNRAS

We perform the NuSTAR and Swift/XRT joint energy spectral fitting of simultaneous observations from the broad-line Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5273. When fitted with the combination of an exponential cut-off power-law and a reflection model, a high energy cut-off is detected at 143$^{+96}_{-40}$ keV with 2-sigma significance. Existence of such cut-off is also consistent with the observed Comptonizing electron temperature when fitted with a Comptonization model independently. We observe a moderate hard X-ray variability of the source over the time-scale of ~12 years using INTEGRAL/ISGRI observations in the energy range of 20-100 keV. When the hard band count rate (6-20 keV) is plotted against the soft band count rate (3-6 keV), a hard offset is observed. Our results indicate that the cut-off energy may not correlate with the coronal X-ray luminosity in a simple manner. Similarities in parameters that describe coronal properties indicate that the coronal structure of NGC 5273 may be similar to that of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 and another galaxy MCG-5-23-16 where the coronal plasma is dominated by electrons, rather than electron-positron pairs. Therefore, the coronal cooling is equally efficient to the heating mechanism keeping the cut-off energy at low even at the low accretion rate., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from a detailed spectral-timing analysis of a long ~486 ks XMM-Newton observation of the bare Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 120 which showed alternating diminution and increment in the 0.3-10 keV X-ray flux over four consecutive orbits in 2014. We study the energy-dependent variability of Ark 120 through broad-band X-ray spectroscopy, fractional root-mean-squared (rms) spectral modelling, hardness-intensity diagram and flux-flux analysis. The X-ray (0.3-10 keV) spectra are well fitted by a thermally Comptonized primary continuum with two (blurred and distant) reflection components and an optically thick, warm Comptonization component for the soft X-ray excess emission below ~2 keV. During the first and third observations, the fractional X-ray variability amplitude decreases with energy while for second and fourth observations, X-ray variability spectra are found to be inverted-crescent and crescent shaped respectively. The rms variability spectra are well modelled by two constant reflection components, a soft excess component with variable luminosity and a variable intrinsic continuum with the normalization and spectral slope being correlated. The spectral softening of the source with both the soft excess and UV luminosities favour Comptonization models where the soft excess and primary X-ray emission are produced through Compton up-scattering of the UV and UV/soft X-ray seed photons in the putative warm and hot coronae, respectively. Our analyses imply that the observed energy-dependent variability of Ark 120 is most likely due to variations in the spectral shape and luminosity of the hot corona and to variations in the luminosity of the warm corona, both of which are driven by variations in the seed photon flux., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first results from a detailed analysis of a new, long ($\sim100$ ks) XMM-Newton observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PG 1404$+$226 which showed a large-amplitude, rapid X-ray variability by a factor of $\sim7$ in $\sim10$ ks with an exponential rise and a sharp fall in the count rate. We investigate the origin of the soft X-ray excess emission and rapid X-ray variability in the source through time-resolved spectroscopy and fractional root-mean-squared (rms) spectral modeling. The strong soft X-ray excess below 1 keV observed both in the time-averaged and time-resolved spectra is described by the intrinsic disk Comptonization model as well as the relativistic reflection model where the emission is intensive merely in the inner regions ($r_{\rm in}<1.7 r_{\rm g}$) of an ionized accretion disk. We detected no significant UV variability while the soft X-ray excess flux varies together with the primary power-law emission (as $F_{{\rm primary}}\propto F_{{\rm excess}}^{1.54}$), although with a smaller amplitude, as expected in the reflection scenario. The observed X-ray fractional rms spectrum is approximately constant with a drop at $\sim0.6$ keV and is described by a non-variable emission line component with the observed energy of $\sim0.6$ keV and two variable spectral components: a more variable primary power-law emission and a less variable soft excess emission. Our results suggest the `lamppost geometry' for the primary X-ray emitting hot corona which illuminates the innermost accretion disk due to strong gravity and gives rise to the soft X-ray excess emission., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We perform X-ray/ultraviolet (UV) spectral and X-ray variability studies of the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy RX J1633.3+4719 using XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations from 2011 and 2012. The 0.3-10 keV spectra consist of an ultrasoft component described by an accretion disc blackbody (kT_in = 39.6^{+11.2}_{-5.5} eV) and a power law due to the thermal Comptonization ({\Gamma} = 1.96^{+0.24}_{-0.31}) of the disc emission. The disc temperature inferred from the soft excess is at least a factor of 2 lower than that found for the canonical soft excess emission from radio-quiet NLS1s. The UV spectrum is described by a power law with photon index 3.05^{+0.56}_{-0.33}. The observed UV emission is too strong to arise from the accretion disc or the host galaxy, but can be attributed to a jet. The X-ray emission from RX J1633.3+4719 is variable with fractional variability amplitude $F_{\rm var}$=13.5$\pm1.0$ per cent. In contrast to radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN), X-ray emission from the source becomes harder with increasing flux. The fractional rms variability increases with energy and the rms spectrum is well described by a constant disc component and a variable power-law continuum with the normalization and photon index being anticorrelated. Such spectral variability cannot be caused by variations in the absorption and must be intrinsic to the hot corona. Our finding of possible evidence for emission from the inner accretion disc, jet and hot corona from RX J1633.3+4719 in the optical to X-ray bands makes this object an ideal target to probe the disc-jet connection in AGN., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, Published in MNRAS
