Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects., Comment: 535 authors from 84 institutions, 12 pages, 8 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. 25. Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on specialty choice: A survey of fresh medical graduates of Pakistan

Abstract

Background & Objective: Medical students form an integral part of future taskforce for the healthcare sector. We aimed to assess the impact of demographic charcateristics and COVID-19 pandemic affecting choice of speciality among medical graduates in Pakistan. Materials & Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on fresh medical graduates using two self-designed online questionnaire surveys before and after two months of house job, inquiring choice of specialty, reasons for choosing it, exposure to pandemic and its effect on choice of specialty using Chi-Square test. Results: Fifty nine percent of medical graduates had chosen field of speciality, significantly impacted by higher socioeconomic class (p=0.006), fathers with higher education (p=0.046) and advice about specialty selection (p=0.044). Internal medicine (20%), surgery (19%), obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) (17%) and dermatology (13%) were most commonly selected. Age (p=0.027), female gender (p=0.009) and mothers with higher education (p=0.022) significantly affected choosing O&G, while advice to choose this specialty impacted choosing O&G (p=0.027) and dermatology (p=0.022). Better patient outcomes, challenging specialty, reputation/prestige and inspiration from a doctor were common reasons to choose a specialty. 9.1% changed their initial choice of specialty based on exposure to COVID-19 pandemic of whom majority switched to COVID unrelated fields, but it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study identifies that demographic, patient outcome and personal factors were primary determinants of specialty choice. COVID-19 pandemic did not significantly affect career choices among medical graduates.

26. The impact of using rice husk ash as a replacement material in concrete: An experimental study

Abstract

Rice husk ash (RHA) is a promising pozzolanic alternative material for partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement to increase the durability and strength of concrete and, at the same time, to decrease the corrosion effect caused by the harsh environment conditions. In this study, the impact of adding RHA in different ratios (0%, 7%, and 14%) as a replacement of ordinary Portland cement with different water–cement ratios (0.3, 0.5, and 0.7) and cured in water for different periods (10, 20, and 30 days) both on the durability and strength of the concrete and on its corrosion was investigated. The prepared specimens were tested by flexural, compressive, and tensile strength tests, slump test, and Rapid Chloride Ion Penetration test to determine the suitability of the partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement by RHA in concrete. The most important findings of this work, which is considered novel in this field, are that adding fine (instead of more extensive) RHA particles enhances the flexural, compressive, and tensile strength values and limits the chloride ion penetration with time. An adverse impact was found to increase the water–cement ratio, which is assigned to the effect of water on RHA and as a result on the porosity of the concrete.

27. Spectral characterization, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects of ethanolic extract of Calotropis procera leaf and dry latex from Jazan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract

Traditional healers have used the shrub Calotropis procera (CP) for many years for various therapies. The present study investigated the bioactive constituents of ethanolic extract of CP leaf and dried latex using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy. The identification and characterization of the compounds were confirmed by examining the constituents' mass spectrum fragmentations and FT-IR spectra and comparing the results with those in the literature. The tail-flick method was used to investigate the analgesic properties of the extract and its anti-inflammatory activities using a rat model of formalin-induced oedema. Acute oral toxicity in rats was studied per OECD recommendations. Twenty male rats were divided into four groups and received an ethanolic extract of the leaves and dried milky sap of CP (200 mg/Kg) in groups 1, 2, and 3. Group 4 rats were administered aspirin 50 mg/kg as a positive control. The CP dried latex extract has the highest content of lupeol and its acetate derivative compared to its leaf extract. The CP dried latex extract inhibited inflammation more significantly than the ethanolic leaf extract and the drug indomethacin at a higher dosage (200 mg/kg). The ethanolic extracts showed analgesia comparable to aspirin. It suggests that fatty acids and their esters, particularly ethyl linoleate (8.96%), ethyl palmitate (7.99%), ethyl linoleate (6.98%), and palmitic acid (5.18%), may be valuable biomarkers for characterizing leaf and latex samples and describing the medicinal potential of CP.

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a brain illness that causes cognitive impairment in the elderly, especially females, as a result of genetics, hormones, and life experiences. It becomes more severe with age and is associated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Beta-amyloid plaques and hyper phosphorylated Tau protein buildup are common clinical findings. Misfiling of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and Amyloid beta peptide (Aβ) proteins contributes to Alzheimer's disease. Enzyme Acetylcholinesterase enzyme interacts with amyloid-beta, enhancing its accumulation in insoluble plaques, leading to successful treatment for Alzheimer's disease primarily based on lowering this enzyme. Treatments include using the Rivastigmine for mild, moderate, or severe Alzheimer's disease, which inhibits acetylcholinesterase, but may cause side effects; Solanine derivatives, nightshade toxin, it is cholinesterase inhibitory, may mitigate Alzheimer's illness is progressing. In this research utilized a molecular docking program, which is a computer's computational ability to determine the optimal position for a specific compound to bind to a protein or target, forming a target-ligand complex and displaying biological activity and aiding in the development of effective anti-AD treatments and understanding AD pathological mechanisms. The study examined complexes of 3LII (Acetylcholinesterase receptor) in the A and B chain with Solanine and Rivastigmine derivatives, using an in-silico approach. PyRx default sorter was used to improve docking accuracy. Four compounds were selected based on their higher binding affinities in chain A and B. The results showed that Solanine derivatives (alpha-Solanine, Beta1-Solanine and Beta2-Solanine) have higher binding strength (−9.0,-9.3 and −8.6) than Rivastigmine (−7.2) in chain A, and also the binding strength was high for the Solanine derivatives (alpha-Solanine, Beta1-Solanine, and Beta2-Solanine) (−9.0,-8.8 and −8.9) is higher than Rivastigmine (−6.0) in the chain B. Solanine derivatives showed higher binding strength with acetylcholinesterase, potentially for to reduce the progression of the disease.

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the impact of allowable human energy expenditure (HEE) of order pickers on the throughput of workers in manual order zone picking systems MOP. The method used in this research is the Monte Carlo simulation, used while considering many human and job factors. The results showed that a worker’s gender and an item’s weight have little effect on the HEE. On the other hand, body weight, walking speed, distance travelled, and the targeted zone significantly impacted the HEE, rest allowance, and throughput. For example, male pickers at a weight of 75 kg can move up to speed to 1 m/s and pick up items weighing up to 5 kg without reaching the allowable HEE rate, equal to 4.3 kcal/min, and, thus, no rest is needed. Female pickers at a weight of 75 kg reach the allowable HEE rate, equal to 2.6 kcal/min, at a very low speed of approximately 0.1 m/s when picking up items up to 5 kg, and, thus, frequent rest is needed, which leads to low throughput. To increase the throughput of female pickers, they can be assigned to pick up lighter items. Utilising Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the HEE in MOP while considering many factors.

31. Source diversity of Artemia enrichment boosts goldfish (Carassius auratus) performance, β-carotene content, pigmentation, immune-physiological and transcriptomic responses

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to assess the impact of spirulina and/or canthaxanthin-enriched Artemia on the goldfish (Carassius auratus) growth, pigmentation, blood analysis, immunity, intestine and liver histomorphology, and expression of somatolactin (SL) and growth hormone (GH) genes. Artemia was enriched with spirulina and/or canthaxanthin for 24 h. Goldfish (N = 225, 1.10 ± 0.02 g) were tested in five experimental treatments, three replicates each: (T1) fish fed a commercial diet; (T2) fish fed a commercial diet and un-enriched Artemia (UEA); (T3) fish fed a commercial diet and spirulina-enriched Artemia (SEA); (T4) fish fed a commercial diet and canthaxanthin-enriched Artemia (CEA); and (T5) fish fed a commercial diet and spirulina and canthaxanthin-enriched Artemia (SCA) for 90 days. The results showed that the use of spirulina and/or canthaxanthin increased performance, β-carotene content and polyunsaturated fatty acids of Artemia. For goldfish, T5 showed the highest growth performance, β-carotene concentration and the lowest chromatic deformity. T5 also showed improved hematology profile, serum biochemical, and immunological parameters. Histomorphology of the intestine revealed an increase in villi length and goblet cells number in the anterior and middle intestine, with normal liver structure in T5. SL and GH gene expression in the liver and brain differed significantly among treatments with a significant increase in enriched Artemia treatments compared to T1 and T2. In conclusion, the use of spirulina and/or canthaxanthin improved performance of Artemia. Feeding goldfish spirulina and/or canthaxanthin-enriched Artemia improved performance, β-carotene content, pigmentation, health status and immune-physiological response.

Abstract

The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of $\pi^0$ production from $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$\pi^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$., Comment: 554 authors from 81 institutions, 21 pages, 13 figures, and 3 tables. Abstract

In the low-temperature range, catalytic combustion results in few emissions of nitrogen oxide and happens without a visible flame. This work investigates the effect of initial pressure (IP) on catalytic methane-air combustion (CMAC) in a microchannel using the molecular dynamics (MD) method. Palladium particles with an atomic ratio of 4 % were used as a catalyst. The study also investigates the CMAC in two environments: excess oxygen (EO) and deficient oxygen (DO). The research investigates the changes in density (Den), velocity (Velo), temperature (Temp) profiles, heat flux (HF), thermal conductivity (TC), and combustion efficiency (CE). The results of the MD simulation indicate that the maximum values of Den and velocity decrease as the IP increases to 10 bar. This reduction was more pronounced in the EO medium than in the DO medium. The maximum values of density and velocity decrease to 0.105 atom/Å and 0.17 Å/ps, respectively, in the EO medium. These values decrease to 0.080 atom/Å and 0.20 Å/ps, respectively, in the DO medium. Additionally, the HF and TC values decrease in both mediums, with the EO medium showing values of 1839 W/m2 and 1.01 W/m.K, and the DO medium showing values of 1869 W/m2 and 1.04 W/m.K. If there was a DO medium, the atoms and particles of the system had a greater ability to heat transfer to different parts. Therefore, TC and HF are more in this case.
