Objective: To identify the potential factors that induce procedural errors during posterior proximal resin composite restorations placed by dental students. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 803 bitewing radiographs of posterior proximal resin composite restorations placed by dental students at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University. Atypical radiographic signs of failure were screened, and different patient-, operator-, and clinical-related factors were recorded. Chi-square test was used to examine the relationship between procedural errors and recorded factors. Stepwise adjusted logistic regression model was performed to identify predictors of procedural errors. Results: The most observed errors were internal gaps at the bonding interface and internal voids. Molars had 0.39 the risk of internal voids (odds ratio [OR] = 0.39; confidence interval [CI] = 0.25–0.60; P = 40 years of age had 1.79 the risk of overhang compared to younger patients (OR = 1.79; CI = 1.04–3.11; P =

Abstract: Objectives: To conduct a comprehensive scoping review focusing on published anesthesiology-specific training based on simulation to assess up-to-date uses of simulation-based education in anesthesiology training. Our goal was to establish a solid ground for building standardized and accredited curricula for simulation-based education in the specialty of anesthesia in the near future. Methods: We searched the PubMed, CINAHL and EMBASE databases on May 10, 2021 for relevant articles. We followed the five-stage scoping review methodology: identifying a research question, identifying relevant studies, study selection, charting the data, and synthesis of results. Results: Our initial electronic search identified 5609 potential articles. After abstract screening and removing duplicates, 636 articles were evaluated in full text for inclusion or exclusion. Based on this strategy, 283 articles were included in this review. We mapped the current practice of simulation in training and certification across different anesthesiology subspecialties. Conclusions: Significant effort has been placed into the use of simulation for training, certification, and recertification in anesthesiology. Future effort to develop simulation-based training that can be generalized to trainees in this specialty, similar to other fields such as aviation and space sciences, will enhance the standardization of training and hence patient safety.

Thermal adaptation in low-income housing of Mumbai, India is investigated using a longitudinal field study and in-situ field measurements. 705 set of responses from two different neighbourhoods were analysed to understand the patterns of behavioural adaptation. Spatial configuration, temporal factors and underlying societal norms influenced the comfort-related behaviour in low-income housing. Clothing adaptation was primarily governed by the gendered socio-cultural practice of purdah system and western influences rather than thermal needs. Logistic regression predicts probabilities of 88% and 20% for using ceiling fans and exhaust fans respectively at 80% indoor air relative humidity. However, thermal stimuli cannot predict occupant behaviour well due to presence of non-thermal determinants. Security, privacy, environmental nuisances (dust, noise and odour) and insects or animals menace (mosquitoes, monkeys, rats, lizards) were the major barriers to thermal adaptation. The study is helpful in evaluating the influence of occupant behaviour on building performance and thus to inform building design and operation. The policy implications could be through the development of design guidelines for the housing schemes to create thermally comfortable low-income dwellings.

Muslim students in higher education are affected by the hardships of oppression, discrimination, prejudices, and stereotypes associated with the increasing Islamophobia and xenophobia within the U.S. The current literature on Middle Eastern Muslim men college students lacks an understanding of their lived experiences on U.S. college campuses. The purpose of this study is to understand how Middle Eastern Muslim men college students navigate a university within a divisive political context. This phenomenological study conducted semi-structured interviews with seven Middle Eastern Muslim men students. Data gathered informs how participants of this study made sense of their experience navigating higher education institutions. The findings describe that Middle Eastern Muslim men college students must fight negative perceptions, face the challenge of feeling alone socially and academically, and commit to education with the support of their families. After the findings, this paper provides a discussion and a list of recommendations for research and practice to be inclusive and elevate the lived experiences of Middle Eastern Muslim men students in higher education. While this study took place in the U.S., the discussion and recommendations apply to all colleges and universities worldwide.

We report surveillance conducted in 217 pestiferous rodents in Hong Kong for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We did not detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA but identified 1 seropositive rodent, suggesting exposure to a virus antigenically similar to SARS-CoV-2. Potential exposure of urban rodents to SARS-CoV-2 cannot be ruled out.

We present a learning framework for abstracting complex shapes by learning to assemble objects using 3D volumetric primitives. In addition to generating simple and geometrically interpretable explanations of 3D objects, our framework also allows us to automatically discover and exploit consistent structure in the data. We demonstrate that using our method allows predicting shape representations which can be leveraged for obtaining a consistent parsing across the instances of a shape collection and constructing an interpretable shape similarity measure. We also examine applications for image-based prediction as well as shape manipulation.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability globally. No drug treatments are available, so interest has turned to endogenous neural stem cells (NSCs) as alternative strategies for treatment. We hypothesized that regulation of cell proliferation through modulation of the sonic hedgehog pathway, a key NSC regulatory pathway, could lead to functional improvement. We assessed sonic hedgehog (Shh) protein levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with TBI. Using the cortical contusion injury (CCI) model in rodents, we used pharmacological modulators of Shh signaling to assess cell proliferation within the injured cortex using the marker 5-Ethynyl-2?-deoxyuridine (EdU); 50mg/mL. The phenotype of proliferating cells was determined and quantified. Motor function was assessed using the rotarod test. In patients with TBI there is a reduction of Shh protein in CSF compared with control patients. In rodents, following a severe CCI, quiescent cells become activated. Pharmacologically modulating the Shh signaling pathway leads to changes in the number of newly proliferating injury-induced cells. Upregulation of Shh signaling with Smoothened agonist (SAG) results in an increase of newly proliferating cells expressing glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), whereas the Shh signaling inhibitor cyclopamine leads to a reduction. Some cells expressed doublecortin (DCX) but did not mature into neurons. The SAG-induced increase in proliferation is associated with improved recovery of motor function. Localized restoration of Shh in the injured rodent brain, via increased Shh signaling, has the potential to sustain endogenous cell proliferation and the mitigation of TBI-induced motor deficits albeit without the neuronal differentiation.

The Protein Complex Analysis Project (PCAP) has two major goals: 1. to develop an integrated set of high throughput pipelines to identify and characterize multi-protein complexes in a microbe more swiftly and comprehensively than currently possible and 2. to use these pipelines to elucidate and model the protein interaction networks regulating stress responses in Desulfovibrio vulgaris with the aim of understanding how this and similar microbes can be used in bioremediation of metal and radionuclides found in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) contaminated sites. PCAP builds on the established research and infrastructure of another Genomics: GTL initiative conducted by the Environmental Stress Pathways Project (ESPP). ESPP has developed D. vulgaris as a model for stress responses and has used gene expression profiling to define specific sets of proteins whose expression changes after application of a stressor. Proteins, however, do not act in isolation. They participate in intricate networks of protein/protein interactions that regulate cellular metabolism. To understand and model how these identified genes affect the organism, therefore, it is essential to establish not only the other proteins that they directly contact, but the full repertoire of protein/protein interactions within the cell. In addition, there may well be genes whose activity is changed in response to stress not by regulating their expression level but by altering the protein partners that they bind, by modifying their structures, or by changing their subcellular locations. There may also be differences in the way proteins within individual cells respond to stress that are not apparent in assays that examine the average change in a population of cells. Therefore, we are extending ESPP's analysis to characterize the polypeptide composition of as many multi-protein complexes in the cell as possible and determine their stoichiometries, their quaternary structures, and their locations in planktonic cells and in individual cells within biofilms. PCAP will characterize complexes in wild type cells grown under normal conditions and also examine how these complexes are affected in cells perturbed by stress or by mutation of key stress regulatory genes. These data will all be combined with those of the ongoing work of the ESPP to understand, from a physical-chemical, control-theoretical, and evolutionary point of view, the role of multi-protein complexes in stress pathways involved in the biogeochemistry of soil microbes under a wide variety of conditions. Essential to this endeavor is the development of automated high throughput methods that are robust and allow for the comprehensive analysis of many protein complexes. Biochemical purification of endogenous complexes and identification by mass spectrometry is being coupled with in vitro and in vivo EM molecular imaging methods. Because no single method can isolate all complexes, we are developing two protein purification pipelines, one the current standard Tandem Affinity Purification approach, the other a novel tagless strategy. Specific variants ofeach of these are being developed for water soluble and membrane proteins. Our Bioinstrumentation group is developing highly parallel micro-scale protein purification and protein sample preparation platforms, and mass spectrometry data analysis is being automated to allow the throughput required. The stoichiometries of the purified complexes are being determined and the quaternary structures of complexes larger than 250 kDa are being solved by single particle EM. We are developing EM tomography approaches to examine whole cells and sectioned, stained material to detect complexes in cells and determine their localization and structures. New image analysis methods will be applied to speed determination of quaternary structures from EM data. Spectral graph theoretic methods have recently shown great promise for the problem of image segmentation. However, due to the computational demands of these approaches, applications to large problems such as spatiotemporal data and high resolution imagery have been slow to appear. The contribution of this paper is a method that substantially reduces the computational requirements of grouping algorithms based on spectral partitioning making it feasible to apply them to very large grouping problems. Our approach is based on a technique for the numerical solution of eigenfunction problems known as the Nystrom method. This method allows one to extrapolate the complete grouping solution using only a small number of samples. In doing so, we leverage the fact that there are far fewer coherent groups in a scene than pixels.
