Abstract

A comprehensive systematic study is made for the collective β and γ bands in even-even isotopes with neutron numbers N=88 to 92 and proton numbers Z=62(Sm) to 70 (Yb). Data, including excitation energies, B(E0) and B(E2) values, and branching ratios from previously published experiments are collated with new data presented for the first time in this study. The experimental data are compared to calculations using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) based on the covariant density functional theory (CDFT). A realistic potential in the quadrupole shape parameters V(β,γ) is determined from potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated using the CDFT. The parameters of the 5DCH are fixed and contained within the CDFT. Overall, a satisfactory agreement is found between the data and the calculations. In line with the energy staggering S(I) of the levels in the 2γ+ bands, the potential energy surfaces of the CDFT calculations indicate γ-soft shapes in the N=88 nuclides, which become γ rigid for N=90 and N=92. The nature of the 02+ bands changes with atomic number. In the isotopes of Sm to Dy, they can be understood as β vibrations, but in the Er and Yb isotopes the 02+ bands have wave functions with large components in a triaxial superdeformed minimum. In the vicinity of 152Sm, the present calculations predict a soft potential in the β direction but do not find two coexisting minima. This is reminiscent of 152Sm exhibiting an X(5) behavior. The model also predicts that the 03+ bands are of two-phonon nature, having an energy twice that of the 02+ band. This is in contradiction with the data and implies that other excitation modes must be invoked to explain their origin. peerReviewed

Abstract

High-spin states in 198Tl were studied using the 197Au( $ \alpha$, 3 n) reaction. The level scheme was considerably extended including two new bands and several non-yrast levels. One of the new bands is possibly a chiral partner to the yrast $ \pi$ h9/2⊗ $ \nu$ i13/2 -1band. Two-quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations suggest an aplanar orientation of the total angular momenta for these bands, thus supporting possible chirality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High spin states in 194Tl, excited through the 181Ta (18O, 5n)194Tl heavy-ion fusion evaporation reaction were studied at iThemba LABS using the AFRODITE array, which consisted of 8 clovers and 6 LEPS detectors. The yrast band built on the 8- isomeric state has a πh9/2 ⊗ vi-113/2 configuration suitable for a chiral system. One of the new bands built on a new 10- level has the same parity and similar excitation energy to those of the yrast band. This new band is linked to the yrast band by several transitions and may be a chiral partner to the yrast band. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The excited states in 198Tl populated in the 197Au(α,3n) reaction at a beam energy of 40 MeV were studied using two complementary experiments aimed at γ-ray spectroscopy at iThemba LABS, and at electron-γ spectroscopy at Orsay, respectively. The level scheme of 198Tl was extended and a weak side band feeding into the yrast πh9/2⊗i13/2 band was observed. The properties of these two bands are similar to these of the pairs of bands in the A = 130 mass region initially interpreted as chiral doublets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High spin states in 194Tl, excited through the 181Ta(18O,5n) fusion evaporation reaction, were studied using the AFRODITE array at iThemba LABS. Candidate chiral bands built on the πh9/2xνi13/21 configuration were found. Furthermore these bands were observed through a band crossing caused by the excitation of a νi13/2 pair. Gamma rays with energies up to 21 MeV were measured with Ge detectors. Such γ rays were produced in the 208Pb(p,γ)209Bi reaction.
