10. Shifting from Traditional Engineering Education towards Competency-Based Approach: The Most Recommended Approach-Review

Abstract

In recent years, universities have been developing more robust competency-based classes for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Competency-based education (CBE) is based on outcomes and is student-centred, creating a better learning experience. This paper provides context for competency-based education over a knowledge area (KA), knowledge unit (KU), and learning outcome (LO) mindset. Additionally, we compared the traditional educational approaches and CBE using a software engineering competency list as assessment criteria. This study provides a thorough review, emphasizing the transition toward competency-based approach in software engineering education and training. The five main reasons education institutes turn toward CBE are: Firstly, CBE supports lifelong learning. Second, it fosters an empowered and inclusive learning culture. Thirdly, it provides appropriate teaching and support on a timely and individualized basis. Fourth, it employs instructional ideas that are matched with students' needs and objectives. Finally, CBE places a premium on transparency and sets out explicit expectations. Our findings indicate that competency-based education is the outcome-driven approach in today's engineering education. It encourages students to know what to do upon graduation rather than what they know.

Abstract

Industry-academia collaboration (IAC) has long been a source of discussion in various ways. A vital first step toward closing the gap is fostering alumni engagement in industry and academia. Industry-academia collaborations are like earth and water, and they live in harmony. They cannot exist apart from one another. The collaborative effort between industry and academia promotes improvement and innovation in technology and innovative research and enables the university to be more relevant to the industry. This article proposes a collaborative approach based on alumni influences and uses secondary data on the influences of alumni in engineering to enrich the collaboration between industry and academia. The industry and academia utilize the alumni's potential to facilitate communication and offer their students and staff facilities. The research findings can be used by policymakers to innovate in the field of engineering and to strengthen the partnership between industry and academia in society. The model enables academia and industry to utilize the alumni strengths in enriching the collaboration; it also enhances academic research output, recruitment, fundraising, marketing, product promotion, and internship opportunities for students via alumni active participation. We propose some significant agendas for future work.

Abstract

The requirements engineering process is a crucial stage of the software development life cycle. It involves various stakeholders from different professional backgrounds, particularly in the requirements elicitation phase. Each stakeholder carries distinct domain knowledge, causing them to differently interpret certain words, leading to cross-domain ambiguity. This can result in misunderstanding amongst them and jeopardize the entire project. This paper proposes a natural language processing approach to find potentially ambiguous words for a given set of domains. The idea is to apply linear transformations on word embedding models trained on different domain corpora, to bring them into a unified embedding space. The approach then finds words with divergent embeddings as they signify a variation in the meaning across the domains. It can help a requirements analyst in preventing misunderstandings during elicitation interviews and meetings by defining a set of potentially ambiguous terms in advance.
