The findings after the first year of the study are presented. The study population is 282 052 men and women aged 25–64 years, current residents of rural Tarnobrzeg Voivodeship. The population is characterized by a declining linear trend in ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality in men aged 35–44 years. The myocardial infarction (MI) incidence (per 100 000 residents) is 233 in men and 68 in women. The MI death rates (per 100 000 residents) are 128 for men and 29 for women. The MI 28-day case fatality is 44 % for men and 41 % for women. The most frequent risk factors are: smoking in men (58 %) and obesity in women (40 %). Around one-quarter of the men and of the women are hypertensive. The rates for hypercholesterolemia are 9 % in men and 13 % in women.

Recently there has been widening stream of research on the relationships between obesity and mental disorders. Patients with obesity seem to be prone to developing bipolar spectrum disorders and they present with specific personality traits. The aim of this study was to analyze the associations between obesity, bipolarity features, and personality traits.A nested case-control study was performed. Patients with obesity constituted the sample of cases (N = 90), and healthy individuals were ascribed to the control group (N = 70). The lifetime presence of bipolarity features was analyzed with the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), while personality traits were assessed with the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI).Bipolarity features were more prevalent in the patients with obesity, as compared to healthy individuals. Patients with obesity had both higher mean value of MDQ score (p = 0.01) and a higher proportion of subjects with MDQ score ≥ 7 points (p = 0.012) as well as lower score on the NEO-FFI openness to experience (p0.001), compared to control subjects. Using multivariate model, in patients with obesity, a significant positive correlation between bipolarity and neuroticism, and negative with agreeableness and conscientiousness was established. Such relationship was not observed in control subjects. In the population of patients with obesity, there is a specific combination between bipolarity and personality traits (high-trait neuroticism, low-trait conscientiousness, and low-trait agreeableness). This may have some consequences for both pharmacological and psychological management of such patients.

- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: It has been documented that COPD is a risk factor for lung cancer. In COPD patients, changes in lung angiogenesis - a critical process in the development of lung cancer - have been poorly investigated. We aimed to determine whether serum from COPD patients could promote the proangiogenic capabilities of endothelial cells in vitro. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The research was carried out using sera from COPD patients and healthy volunteers, endothelial cells EA.hy926, and bronchial epithelial cells. The concentration of angiogenic molecules was quantified using ELISA tests. The proliferation and migration of EA.hy926 were tested using fluorescence-based methods. Tube formation was analyzed with a commercially available assay. RESULTS: Sera from COPD patients and conditioned media generated by epithelial cells exposed to these sera stimulate proliferation, but not migration, of EA.hy926. This coincided with increased tube formation in both experimental regimens. The sera from COPD patients contained increased levels of CCL2, CCL21, and HGF, whereas the conditioned media generated by epithelial cells treated with these sera exhibited increased levels of CCL2, CCL21, CXCL8, FGF, and sICAM-1. The concentration of angiogenic markers in the sera and conditioned media, and their effect on the behavior of the endothelium were independent of smoking status (COPD and controls), stage of obstruction, and disease group (COPD). CONCLUSIONS: The increased incidence of lung malignancy in COPD patients may be associated, at least to some extent, with the direct and indirect proangiogenic activity of their sera (via alterations in the secretome of epithelial cells). - Abstract
Optimal health is maintained by interaction of multiple intrinsic and environmental factors at different levels of complexity-from molecular, to physiological, to social. Understanding and quantification of these interactions will aid design of successful health interventions. We introduce the reference network concept as a platform for multi-level exploration of biological relations relevant for metabolic health, by integration and mining of biological interactions derived from public resources and context-specific experimental data. A White Adipose Tissue Health Reference Network (WATRefNet) was constructed as a resource for discovery and prioritization of mechanism-based biomarkers for white adipose tissue (WAT) health status and the effect of food and drug compounds on WAT health status. The WATRefNet (6,797 nodes and 32,171 edges) is based on (1) experimental data obtained from 10 studies addressing different adiposity states, (2) seven public knowledge bases of molecular interactions, (3) expert's definitions of five physiologically relevant processes key to WAT health, namely WAT expandability, Oxidative capacity, Metabolic state, Oxidative stress and Tissue inflammation, and (4) a collection of relevant biomarkers of these processes identified by BIOCLAIMS ( http://bioclaims.uib.es ). The WATRefNet comprehends multiple layers of biological complexity as it contains various types of nodes and edges that represent different biological levels and interactions. We have validated the reference network by showing overrepresentation with anti-obesity drug targets, pathology-associated genes and differentially expressed genes from an external disease model dataset. The resulting network has been used to extract subnetworks specific to the above-mentioned expert-defined physiological processes. Each of these process-specific signatures represents a mechanistically supported composite biomarker for assessing and quantifying the effect of interventions on a physiologic

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a key factor in the development of the metabolic (MetS), which is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk. We whether obesity classification by BMI and body fat percentage (BF%) cardiometabolic profile and dietary responsiveness in 486 MetS subjects dietary intervention study). DESIGN AND METHODS: Anthropometric of inflammation and glucose metabolism, lipid profiles, adhesion hemostatic factors were determined at baseline and after 12 weeks of interventions (high saturated fat (SFA), high monounsaturated fat low fat high complex carbohydrate (LFHCC) diets, one supplemented with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFAs)). RESULTS: About 39 and subjects classified as normal and overweight by BMI were obese according BF%. Individuals classified as obese by BMI (>/=30 kg/m(2) ) and BF% (men) and >/=35% (women)) (OO, n = 284) had larger waist and hip higher BMI and were heavier (P < 0.001) than those classified as but obese by BF% (NOO, n = 92). OO individuals displayed a more (higher C reactive protein (CRP) and leptin), prothrombotic (higher activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1)), proatherogenic (higher and more insulin resistant (higher HOMA-IR) metabolic profile relative group (P < 0.001). Interestingly, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF- concentrations were lower post-intervention in NOO individuals compared subjects (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, assessing BF% and BMI of a metabotype may help to identify individuals at greater than BMI alone.

We analyzed the available LIGO data coincident with GRB 070201, a short duration hard spectrum gamma-ray burst whose electromagnetically determined sky position is coincident with the spiral arms of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). Possible progenitors of such short hard GRBs include mergers of neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, or soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) flares. These events can be accompanied by gravitational-wave emission. No plausible gravitational wave candidates were found within a 180 s long window around the time of GRB 070201. This result implies that a compact binary progenitor of GRB 070201, with masses in the range 1 M_sun < m_1 < 3 M_sun and 1 M_sun < m_2 < 40 M_sun, located in M31 is excluded at >99% confidence. Indeed, if GRB 070201 were caused by a binary neutron star merger, we find that D < 3.5 Mpc is excluded, assuming random inclination, at 90% confidence. The result also implies that an unmodeled gravitational wave burst from GRB 070201 most probably emitted less than 4.4 x 10^(-4) M_sun c^2 (7.9 x 10^(50) ergs) in any 100 ms long period within the signal region if the source was in M31 and radiated isotropically at the same frequency as LIGO's peak sensitivity (f ~ 150 Hz). This upper limit does not exclude current models of SGRs at the M31 distance., 10 pages 5 figures 1 table to be submitted to ApJ Changes after GWIC review period: minor corrections, typographical tweaks

We have searched for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with the SGR 1806-20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004. This event, originating from a Galactic neutron star, displayed exceptional energetics. Recent investigations of the x-ray light curve's pulsating tail revealed the presence of quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in the 30-2000 Hz frequency range, most of which coincides with the bandwidth of the LIGO detectors. These QPOs, with well-characterized frequencies, can plausibly be attributed to seismic modes of the neutron star which could emit GWs. Our search targeted potential quasimonochromatic GWs lasting for tens of seconds and emitted at the QPO frequencies. We have observed no candidate signals above a predetermined threshold, and our lowest upper limit was set by the 92.5 Hz QPO observed in the interval from 150 s to 260 s after the start of the flare. This bound corresponds to a (90% confidence) root-sum-squared amplitude hrss-det 90%=4.5×10-22strainHz-1/2 on the GW waveform strength in the detectable polarization state reaching our Hanford (WA) 4 km detector. We illustrate the astrophysical significance of the result via an estimated characteristic energy in GW emission that we would expect to be able to detect. The above result corresponds to 7.7×1046erg (=4.3×10-8M c2), which is of the same order as the total (isotropic) energy emitted in the electromagnetic spectrum. This result provides a means to probe the energy reservoir of the source with the best upper limit on the GW waveform strength published and represents the first broadband asteroseismology measurement using a GW detector. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

We report on a search for gravitational wave bursts in data from the three LIGO interferometric detectors during their third science run. The search targets subsecond bursts in the frequency range 100-1100 Hz for which no waveform model is assumed, and has a sensitivity in terms of the root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude of hrss ~ 10^{-20} / sqrt(Hz). No gravitational wave signals were detected in the 8 days of analyzed data., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. Amaldi-6 conference proceedings to be published in Classical and Quantum Gravity
