The spherically symmetric steady accretion of polytropic perfect fluids onto a black hole is the simplest flow model that can demonstrate effects of backreaction (selfgravity). It has been discovered 16 years ago that backreaction does not influence some ("intensive") characteristics of sonic points, under suitable conditions. Herein we consider a wider class of equations of state, with polytropic indices in the range (1,2], and establish detailed boundary conditions that allow one to prove this fact. We find also numerical examples showing limits of our analytic criteria - if suitable analytic conditions are not satisfied, then selfgravity influences all characteristics of sonic points. We study stationary and axially symmetric black hole-disk systems, assuming a combination of the DD2 and Timmes-Swesty equations of state and a three-parameter family of rotation laws. There exist two branches of solutions that are shown to bifurcate, for a suitable specific entropy and a parameter in the rotation law. We integrate numerically axially symmetric stationary Einstein equations describing self-gravitating disks around spinless black holes. The numerical scheme is based on a method developed by Shibata, but contains important new ingredients. We show initial data for gravitational axial waves, that are twice differentiable but which are not $C^{2}$. They generate wave pulses that interact with matter in the radiation cosmological era. This forces the radiation matter to rotate. This rotation is permanent - it persists after the passage of the gravitational pulse. The observed inhomogeneities of the cosmic microwave background radiation put a bound onto discontinuities of superhorizon metric perturbations. We analytically construct an infinite number of trapped toroids in spherically symmetric Cauchy hypersurfaces of the Einstein equations. We focus on initial data which represent "constant density stars" momentarily at rest. There exists an infinite number of constant mean curvature tori, but we also deal with more general configurations. The marginally trapped toroids have been found analytically and numerically; they are unstable. The topologically toroidal trapped surfaces appear in a finite region surrounded by the Schwarzschild horizon., Comment: 4 pages

We consider stationary, axially symmetric toroids rotating around spinless black holes, assuming the general-relativistic Keplerian rotation law, in the first post-Newtonian approximation. Numerical investigation shows that the angular momentum accumulates almost exclusively within toroids. It appears that various types of dragging (anti-dragging) effects are positively correlated with the ratio $M_\mathrm{D}/m$ ($M_\mathrm{D}$ is the mass of a toroid and $m$ is the mass of the black hole) - moreover, their maxima are proportional to $M_\mathrm{D}/m$. The horizontal sizes of investigated toroids range from c. 50 to c. 450 of Schwarzschild radii $R_\mathrm{S}$ of the central black hole; their mass $M_\mathrm{D} \in (10^{-4}m, 40m)$ and the radial size of the system is c. 500 $R_\mathrm{S}$. We found that the relative strength of various dragging (anti-dragging) effects does not change with the mass ratio, but it depends on the size of toroids. We analyze propagation equations for the polar modes of gravitational waves in cosmological space-times. We prove that polar gravitational waves must perturb the density and non-azimuthal components of the velocity of material medium of the Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Axial gravitational waves can influence only the azimuthal velocity, leading to local cosmological rotation. The whole gravitational dynamics reduces to the single "master equation" that has the same form for polar and axial modes. That allows us to conclude that the status of the Huygens principle is the same for axial and polar gravitational waves. Recent general-relativistic extensions of Newtonian rotation laws for self-gravitating stationary fluids allow one to rederive, in the first post-Newtonian approximation, the well known geometric dragging of frames, and two new weak-field effects within rotating tori. These are the recently discovered anti-dragging and a new effect that measures the deviation from the Keplerian motion and/or the contribution of the fluids selfgravity. New rotation laws have been recently found for general-relativistic self-gravitating stationary fluids. It was not clear whether they apply to systems rotating with a constant linear velocity. In this paper we fill this gap. The answer is positive. That means, in particular, that these systems should exhibit the recently discovered general-relativistic weak-field effects within rotating tori: the dynamic anti-dragging and the deviation from the Keplerian motion induced by the fluid selfgravity.

We discuss the relation between the concentration of the Brown-York mass and the formation of trapped surfaces in non-spherical massive systems. In particular, we formulate and prove a precise version of the Thorne hoop conjecture in conformally flat three-geometries sliced by equipotential foliation leaves. An intriguing relationship between the total rest mass and the Brown-York mass is shown. This is a further investigation of the previous work on the Brown-York mass hoop conjecture in spherical symmetry.

We investigated hydrodynamical post-Newtonian models of selfgravitating stationary black-hole-disk systems. The post-Newtonian scheme presented here and also in our recent paper is a continuation of previous, purely Newtonian studies of selfgravitating hydrodynamical disks rotating according to the Keplerian rotation law. The post-Newtonian relativistic corrections are significant even at the 1PN level. The 1PN correction to the angular velocity can be of the order of 10% of its Newtonian value. It can be expressed as a combination of geometric and hydrodynamical terms. We evaluate general-relativistic effects in motion of stationary accretion disks around a Schwarzschild black hole, assuming the first post-Newtonian (1PN) approximation. There arises an integrability condition, that leads to the emergence of two types of general-relativistic corrections to a Newtonian rotation curve. The well known geometric dragging of frames accelerates rotation but the hitherto unknown dynamic term, that reflects the disk structure, deccelerates rotation. The net result can diminish the Newtonian angular velocity of rotation in a central disk zone but the geometric dragging of frames dominates in the disk boundary zone. Both effects are nonlinear in nature and they disappear in the limit of test fluids. Dust disks can be only geometrically dragged while uniformly rotating gaseous disk are untouched at the 1PN order. Recent analytic results concerning stationary, self-gravitating fluids in Newtonian theory are discussed. We give a theorem that forbids infinitely extended fluids, depending on the assumed equation of state and the rotation law. This part extends previous results that have been obtained for static configurations. In a recent paper we investigated stationary, relativistic Bondi-type accretion in Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. Here we study their stability, using the method developed by Moncrief. The analysis applies to perturbations satisfying the potential flow condition. We prove that global isothermal flows in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetimes are stable, assuming the test-fluid approximation. Isothermal flows in Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometries and polytropic flows in Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetimes can be stable, under suitable boundary conditions., Comment: 6 pages

We investigate spherical, isothermal and polytropic steady accretion models in the presence of the cosmological constant. Exact solutions are found for three classes of isothermal fluids, assuming the test gas approximation. The cosmological constant damps the mass accretion rate and - above certain limit - completely stops the steady accretion onto black holes. A "homoclinic-type" accretion flow of polytropic gas has been discovered in AdS spacetimes in the test-gas limit. These results can have cosmological connotation, through the Einstein--Straus vacuole model of embedding local structures into Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. The Keplerian motion of accretion disks in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is usually believed to be generated by a heavy central mass. We investigate accreting disk systems with polytropic gas in Keplerian rotation and obtain a phenomenological formula that relates the Keplerian angular frequency to the ratio of disk and central masses. Central mass approaches the Keplerian value, if the inner boundary of a disk is close to the minimal stable orbit of a black hole. These results are applied to NGC 4258, the unique AGN with a finely measured Keplerian rotation curve of the central disk, with the conclusion that its rotation curve is, in fact, determined by the central black hole. We studied a steadily accreting, geometrically thick disk model that selfconsistently takes into account selfgravitation of the polytropic gas, its interaction with the radiation and the mass accretion rate. The accreting mass is injected inward in the vicinity of the central $z=0$ plane, where also radiation is assumed to be created. The rest of the disk remains approximately stationary. Only conservation laws are employed and the gas-radiation interaction in the bulk of the disk is described in the thin-gas approximation. We demonstrate that this scheme is numerically viable and yields a structure of the bulk that is influenced by the radiation and (indirectly) by the prescribed mass accretion rate. The obtained disk configurations are typical for environments in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), with the central mass of the order of $10^7 M_{\astrosun}$ to $10^8 M_{\astrosun}$, quasi-Keplerian rotation curves, disk masses ranging from about $10^6 M_{\astrosun}$ to $10^7 M_{\astrosun}$, and the luminosity ranging from $10^6 L_{\astrosun}$ to $10^9 L_{\astrosun}$. We estimate the minimal mass of selfgravitating polytropic disks using the famous Sobolev inequality. This bound resembles the well known mass formula for Lane-Emden stars. For ideal gas with the polytropic index n = 3 the minimal mass is not smaller than the Jeans mass. The accuracy of the estimate is verified in a number of numerical examples. We compare Newtonian and general relativistic descriptions of the stationary accretion of self-gravitating fluids onto compact bodies. Spherical symmetry and thin gas approximation are assumed. Luminosity depends, amongst other factors, on the temperature and the contribution of gas to the total mass, in both -- general relativistic ($L_{GR}$) and Newtonian ($L_N$) -- models. We discover a remarkable universal behaviour for transonic flows: the ratio of respective luminosities $L_{GR}/L_N$ is independent of the fractional mass of the gas and depends on asymptotic temperature. It is close to 1 in the regime of low asymptotic temperatures and can grow by one order of magnitude for high temperatures. The Thorne hoop conjecture is an attempt to make precise the notion that gravitational collapse occurs if enough energy is compressed into a small enough volume, with the `size' being defined by the circumference. We can make a precise statement of this form, in spherical symmetry, using the Brown-York mass as our measure of the energy. Consider a spherical 2-surface in a spherically symmetric spacetime. If the Brown-York mass, $M_{BY}$, and the circumference, $C$, satisfy $C < 2\pi M_{BY}$, then the system must either have emerged from a white hole or will collapse into a black hole. We show that no equivalent result can hold true using either the Liu-Yau mass, $M_{LY}$ or the Wang-Yau mass, $M_{WY}$. This forms a major obstacle to any attempt to establish a Thorne-type hoop theorem in the general case based on either the Liu-Yau or the Wang-Yau mass., Comment: 4 pages; accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We consider a family of spherical three dimensional spacelike slices embedded in the Schwarzschild solution. The mean curvature is constant on each slice but can change from slice to slice. We give a simple expression for an everywhere positive lapse and thus we show how to construct foliations. There is a barrier preventing the mean curvature from becoming large, and we show how to avoid this so as to construct a foliation where the mean curvature runs all the way from zero to infinity. No foliation exists where the mean curvature goes from minus to plus infinity. There are slicings, however, where each slice passes through the bifurcation sphere $R = 2M$ and the lapse only vanishes at this one point, and is positive everywhere else, while the mean curvature does run from minus to plus infinity. Analytic methods show stability of the stationary accretion of test fluids but they are inconclusive in the case of self-gravitating stationary flows. We investigate numerically stability of those stationary flows onto compact objects that are transonic and rich in gas. In all studied examples solutions appear stable. Quasi-stationary flows of gas accreting onto a compact center are analyzed in the framework of general-relativistic radiation hydrodynamics, under assumptions of spherical symmetry and thin gas approximation. Numerical investigation shows that luminosity, redshift and gas abundance are correlated. We analyze stationary accretion of selfgravitating gas onto a compact center within general-relativistic radiation hydrodynamics. Spherical symmetry and thin gas approximation are assumed. Numerical investigation shows that transonic flows exist for small redshifts and they cease to exist for high redshifts and high luminosities. There exist two branches of flows (subsonic or supersonic) that originate at a bifurcation point and that embrace the set of subsonic solutions. The morphology of the set of subsonic solutions is essentially independent of redshifts and flows that belong to their boundary provide estimates of the gas abundance of subsonic solutions. It appears that prescribed boundary data guarantee uniqueness only of the bifurcation point, and that the latter has maximal luminosity., Comment: 8 figures

We investigate the accretion onto luminous bodies with hard surfaces within the framework of newtonian theory. The accreting gases are assumed to be polytropes and their selfgravitation is included. A remarkable feature of the model is that under proper boundary conditions some parameters of the sonic point are the same as in the Bondi model and the relation between luminosity and the gas abundance reduces to an algebraic relation. All that holds under assumptions of stationarity and spherical symmetric. We study the propagation of axial gravitational waves in Friedman universes. The evolution equation is obtained in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. The gravitational waves obey the Huygens principle in the radiation dominated era, but in the matter dominated universe their propagation depends on their wavelengths, with the scale fixed essentially by the Hubble radius. Formulation of the Penrose inequality becomes ambiguous when the past and future apparent horizons do cross. We test numerically several natural possibilities of stating the inequality in punctured and boosted single- and double- black holes, in a Dain-Friedrich class of initial data and in conformally flat spheroidal data.The Penrose inequality holds true in vacuum configurations for the outermost element amongst the set of disjoint future and past apparent horizons (as expected)and (unexpectedly) for each of the outermost past and future apparent horizons, whenever these two bifurcate from an outermost minimal surface, regardless of whether they intersect or remain disjoint. We describe conformally flat initial data, with explicitly given analytic extrinsic curvature solving the vacuum momentum constraints. The Jang equation in the spherically symmetric case reduces to a first order equation. This permits an easy analysis of the role apparent horizons play in the (non)existence of solutions.
