Abstract

For the last few years there has been a resurgence in the use of phenomenological growth models for predicting the early dynamics of infectious diseases. These models assume that time is a continuous variable whereas in the present contribution, the discrete versions of Gompertz and Generalized Logistic models are used for early monitoring and short-term forecasting of the spread of an epidemic in a region. The time-continuous models are represented mathematically by first-order differential equations while their discrete versions are represented by first-order difference equations that involve parameters that should be estimated prior to forecasting. The methodology for estimating such parameters is described in detail. Real data of COVID-19 infection in Cuba is used to illustrate this methodology. The proposed methodology was implemented for the first thirty-five days, being able to predict with very good precision the data reported for the following twenty days. The codes implemented to study the Gompertz model in differences are included in an appendix with each step of the methodology identified.

Abstract

Respiration is a core biological energy-converting process whose last steps are carried out by a chain of multisubunit complexes in the inner mitochondrial membrane. To probe the functional and structural diversity of eukaryotic respiration, we examined the respiratory chain of the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila (Tt). Using cryo-electron microscopy on a mixed sample, we solved structures of a supercomplex between Tt complex I (Tt-CI) and Tt-CIII2 (Tt-SC I+III2) and a structure of Tt-CIV2. Tt-SC I+III2 (~2.3 megadaltons) is a curved assembly with structural and functional symmetry breaking. Tt-CIV2 is a ~2.7-megadalton dimer with more than 50 subunits per protomer, including mitochondrial carriers and a TIM83-TIM133-like domain. Our structural and functional study of the T. thermophila respiratory chain reveals divergence in key components of eukaryotic respiration, thereby expanding our understanding of core metabolism.

Abstract

Plant glucanases and chitinases are defense proteins that participate in pathogenesis; however, very little is known about the glucanase (GLUC) and chitinase (CHIT) gene families in mango. Some mango cultivars are of great economic importance and can be affected by anthracnose, a postharvest disease caused by fungi of the genus Colletotrichum spp. This study identified and characterized 23 putative glucanases and 16 chitinases in the mango genome cv. Tommy Atkins. We used phylogenetic analyses to classify the glucanases into three subclasses (A, B, and C) and the chitinases into four classes (I, II, IV, and V). Information on the salicylic, jasmonic acid, and ethylene pathways was obtained by analyzing the cis-elements of the GLUC and CHIT class I and IV gene promoters. The expression profile of GLUC, CHIT class I, and CHIT class IV genes in mango cv. Ataulfo inoculated with two Colletotrichum spp. revealed different profile expression related to these fungi's level of virulence. In general, this study provides the basis for the functional validation of these target genes with which the regulatory mechanisms used by glucanases and chitinases as defense proteins in mango can be elucidated. Abstract

Oviductal (OF) and uterine (UF) fluids are a complex mixture of ions and macromolecules dissolved in water, derived from the secretions of secretory cells and transudates of the circulatory system. Through proteomics, OF and UF have been analyzed in different domestic species throughout the estrous cycle or during the first days of pregnancy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the volume, osmolarity, concentration and distribution pattern of proteins, as well as the identification of OVGP1, HSP70 and ezrin proteins for their importance in reproductive physiology, in OF and UF from adult criollo type domestic sheep during the early luteal phase of the estrous cycle. An average of 3.2±1.5 µL OF and 17±0.5 µL UF per reproductive system were obtained; osmolarity was 343±20.8 mOsm kg-1 and 280±96.2 mOsm kg-1 and protein concentration was 71.9±23.8 g L-1 and 21.8±1.1 g L-1, respectively. In the protein distribution pattern, 20 bands were observed in the OF and 14 bands in the UF. Of these, 14 and 8 were specific for OF and UF, respectively, and 6 were common for both. The spectra of the protein molecular weights were 24-324 and 29-353 kDa for OF and UF, respectively. The presence of OVPG1, HSP70 and Ezrin proteins in both fluids was identified, being in greater quantity in the OF (P < 0.0005). The volume recovered from the UF was five times greater than that of the OF. Both osmolarity and protein concentration were higher in OF than in UF (1.2 and 3 times higher). The pattern of protein distribution between the OF and UF was different, being more complex in the OF. Following the death of the library director of the Astronomical Observatory of Cordoba, and the loss of his post, the two remaining librarians had to rethink solutions to the library problems. In this regard they chose a pragmatic approach, organized around three main interrelated themes: people, resources and institutionality, which enabled to re-define the course of the library, inserted it into the institutional project providing specific value and generating the necessary impact to ensure the future of the library next to the Astronomical Observatory of Cordoba.
