Abstract: The breakup reaction 9Be(4He,3a)n was measured using an array of four double-sided silicon strip detectors at beam energies of 22 and 26 MeV. Excited states in 9Be up to 8 MeV were populated and reconstructed through measurements of the charged reaction products. Evidence is given for a state in 9Be at 3.82-0.09+0.08 MeV with width=1240-90+270 keV. This is consistent with two recent measurements of a state with similar properties in the mirror nucleus 9B. An analysis of the reduced widths (Beg.s.8 channel) of this state along with the proposed mirror state has led to a firm limit of J

Abstract: The breakup reaction 9Be(4He, 3α)n was measured using an array of four double-sided silicon strip detectors at beam energies of 22 and 26 MeV. Excited states in 9Be up to 12 MeV were populated and reconstructed through the measurement of the charged reaction products. It is proposed that limits on the spins and parities of the states can be derived from the way that they decay. Various breakup paths for excited states in 9Be have been explored including the 8Beg.s. + n, 8Be2+ + n and 5Heg.s. + 4He channels. By imposing the condition that the breakup proceeded via the 8Be ground state, clean excitation spectra for 9Be were reconstructed. The remaining two breakup channels were found to possess strongly-overlapping kinematic signatures and more sophisticated methods (referenced) are required to completely disentangle these other possibilities. Emphasis is placed on the development of the experimental analysis and the usefulness of Monte-Carlo simulations for this purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The α(10Be,α)10Be resonant scattering reaction has been measured at nine 10Be beam energies from 25 to 48 MeV, scanning out resonances in 14C from excitation energies of 13 to 24 MeV. Angular distribution measurements were used to assign the spin and parity of 5- to resonances at Ex = 18.82(2) and 19.67(2) MeV and 6+ at Ex = 20.80(2) MeV. The data also strongly indicate a 3- resonance at 17.32(2) MeV. The systematic uncertainty on the excitation energies is 175 keV. An R-matrix analysis has been performed for the excitation energy range 16.5 to 22 MeV. The data are discussed in terms of cluster bands in 14C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The popularity of graphene--a pseudospin-½ two-dimensional Dirac-Weyl material-has prompted the search for related materials and the characterization of their properties. In this work, the magneto-optical conductivity is calculated for systems that obey the general pseudospin-s two-dimensional Dirac-Weyl Hamiltonian, with particular focus on s = {½ ,1,3/2,2} . This generalizes calculations that have been made for s = ½ and follows previous work on the optical response of these systems in zero field. In the presence of a magnetic field, Landau levels condense out of the 2s + 1 energy bands. As the chemical potential in a system is shifted, patterns arise in the appearance and disappearance of certain peaks within the optical spectra. These patterns are markedly different for each case considered, creating unique signatures in the magneto-optics. The general structure of each spectrum and how they compare is discussed.
