Abstract Background In the Lake Victoria basin of western Kenya, malaria remains highly endemic despite high coverage of interventions such as mass distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN), indoor residual spraying (IRS) programs, and improvement of availability and accessibility of rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) at community healthcare facilities. We hypothesize that one major cause of the residual transmission is the lack of motivation among residents for malaria prevention and early treatment. Methods This study will aim to develop a demand-side policy tool to encourage local residents’ active malaria prevention and early treatment-seeking behaviors. We examine the causal impact of a financial incentive intervention complemented with malaria education to residents in malaria-prone areas. A cluster-randomized controlled trial is designed to assess the effect of the financial incentive intervention on reducing malaria prevalence in residents of Suba South in Homa Bay County, Kenya. The intervention includes two components. The first component is the introduction of a financial incentive scheme tied to negative RDT results for malaria infection among the target population. This study is an attempt to promote behavioral changes in the residents by providing them with monetary incentives. The project has two different forms of incentive schemes. One is a conditional cash transfer (CCT) that offers a small reward (200 Ksh) for non-infected subjects during the follow-up survey, and the other is a lottery incentive scheme (LIS) that gives a lottery with a 10% chance of winning a large reward (2000 Ksh) instead of the small reward. The second component is a knowledge enhancement with animated tablet-based malaria educational material (EDU) developed by the research team. It complements the incentive scheme by providing the appropriate knowledge to the residents for malaria elimination. We evaluate the intervention’s impact on the residents’ malaria prevalence using a cluster-randomized control trial. Discussion A policy tool to encourage active malaria prevention and early treatment to residents in Suba South, examined in this trial, may benefit other malaria-endemic counties and be incorporated as part of Kenya’s national malaria elimination strategy. The disease is especially deadly to children under the age of 5 years. This is partly due to the fact that they have yet to build up an immune system to help protect them against malaria. As a prevention strategy, music is one way of communicating knowledge to young children and could therefore potentially be used to change children’s behaviour in order to avoid getting sick from malaria. This exploratory study aimed to compare intervention strategies designed to educate and improve knowledge growth about malaria and its prevention in Grade 3 learners in a high-risk malaria region in Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Methods Various intervention strategies were employed and evaluated to determine the most effective intervention method. The study was split into two Phases. Phase 1 used a culturally and age-appropriate song as an intervention, along with a drama piece, a song and drama piece combination, and a control group. The most effective intervention strategy determined during Phase 1 was then subjected to Phase 2, against a control group to validate its efficacy. Questionnaires were used during pre-intervention and post-intervention interviews to evaluate the knowledge growth, if any, of the learners of selected primary schools in two different areas in Vhembe District. Pre-intervention interviews were followed by a specific intervention, based on the respective study groups. After 6 weeks, the post-intervention interviews were done to determine how much learners managed to learn and retain from the intervention received. Results The study found that the group that had only the song as intervention was the most effective learning intervention method in both Phases 1 and 2. Both phases showed that there was statistical significance in almost all of the nine questions asked on the questionnaires. Conclusions The study concluded that a culturally and age-appropriate song can play a significant role in developing behavioural changes and spreading awareness against disease in a high-risk malaria region.

Music as a potential prevention strategy can play a pivotal role in developing behavioural changes and creating awareness about malaria and malaria prevention. The study was conducted in a moderate-risk malaria district in sub-Saharan Africa. A comparative analysis and pre-and post-intervention evaluation of three teaching intervention methods to teach and educate young children about malaria, e.g., song intervention, drama intervention, and song-and-drama combination, was evaluated. Data were collected by means of pre-and post-intervention interviews with Grade 3 primary school children and teachers, as well as a post-intervention questionnaire with teachers, parents, guardians, and caregivers. The purpose of the study was to investigate knowledge gains on malaria in relation to malaria awareness interventions. The results revealed that the song-only intervention was the most effective learning intervention strategy in this population and that behavioural changes and knowledge growth occurred regarding malaria and malaria prevention in this population. Independent of the teaching styles of each teacher in teaching the song to the children, the findings established that culturally and age-appropriate songs contributed to increasing children's knowledge growth regarding sustainable malaria prevention. A two‐year school‐based malaria education intervention was developed to engage students as implementers in malaria prevention and control in the Oromia region, Ethiopia. The current study aimed to validate messenger students' engagement scale (MSES) in malaria education. The scale development process was done stepwise. Multiple behavioural theories were examined to derive possible domains of engagement. Next, a pool of items was developed by linking the domains with malaria target behaviours. The items critically reviewed, pretested and refined for clarity and appropriateness. A cross‐sectional survey of 451 sample households with school‐going children was conducted in five districts of the Jimma‐Zone in March‐2019. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA)/principal component analysis (PCA) was executed to evaluate the construct validity of the scale. Rotated factor loading coefficients of ≥0.4 were retained. Items loaded on multiple factors were retained on the factor with a higher loading score. Cronbach's alpha of 0.7 was used as the cutoff point for reliability. Discriminative validity was declared based on Pearson correlation (between the extracted factors) coefficients that were moderate (r < 0.7), and less than the respective variance explained (VE) by each factor. The validity of convergence of domains with the overall MSES assessed (0.4 < r < 0.9). Logistic regression for key malaria preventive practices was conducted to assess predictive validity. The study explored a 24‐item MSES in six domains of malaria education: reminding, supporting, monitoring, messenger credibility, role modelling and norm setting. The domains explained 67.82% variance of MSES, with a reliability of 93.3%. The factors were convergent with the overall scale (r = 0.764–0.834). Most factors were discriminative, with moderate correlation to each other. Adjusted odds ratios showed engaging credible students in reminding malaria preventive messages and modelling practices predicted exposure to message, insecticide‐treated net (ITN) utilisation and cleaning surrounding. Designing for social good framed within an ethical practice has a long tradition informed by the democratic philosophy of John Dewey, but more recently it has been acknowledged that co-design can embody cultural respect and empathy through an expressed purpose. Using the principles of co-design, a northern European university took a small group of graphic design students to Mozambique to participate in a practice-led research project with local youth groups. The focus was on promoting malaria awareness and preventative education in an area of Africa where the disease is endemic despite large interventions from NGOs. This study examines the iterative process of the co-design project and how it responded to the challenges of a post-colonial environment to deliver a method of communication that was valid and participatory. When people engage in a co-design process, they also engage in ethics, in a process with embedded ethical, reflective and social qualities based on lived knowledge. If design-based social change is going to be effective and sustainable, it must be rooted in empowerment, and not solely dependent on the designer. Applied through this ethical and democratic approach, co-design could provide an engaging new strategy to solve some of the world's greatest social problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a malaria knowledge test (MKT) developed to evaluate a web-based game for students who increasingly travel to malariarisk regions of the world. The 18-item MKT was structured according to the dimensions of the self-regulation model (SRM) to measure the accuracy of students' beliefs about malaria. An experimental design was used to compare three game versions. Students (N=482) participated in 2010 by completing a pre-test, playing a Webbased game simulating student travel to malaria- endemic destinations, and completing a posttest. Study data support the validity and reliability of the MKT for the evaluation of malaria education interventions and for student self-assessment. Use of the MKT to evaluate an educational game about malaria revealed a strong overall learning effect and discrimination by game version, travel experience, and SRM dimension. This 5-min test may also be adapted for educational outreach purposes among health care providers globally, residents of malaria-endemic regions, and other high risk travel groups (e.g., elderly, chronic health conditions, pregnant, or returning to malaria-endemic regions to visit friends/relatives). Observational and survey methodologies were used to probe human behavioral factors influencing the use of insecticide-impregnated bednets to control malaria in rural Sabah, Malaysia. One aim was to investigate why a Geld trial of such nets in an interior area yielded disappointing results. A second aim was to gather baseline data prior to a field trial proposed for a coastal area. Interior villagers reported a significantly higher net usage rate than that observed directly, suggesting that subject self-reports need to be validated in some way. The poor results of the interior field trial appeared related to reluctance to regularly use nets, which were not in wide use previously. Prospects for reducing malaria transmission through bednets appeared better for the coastal area since nearly half of observed villagers were sleeping in them. However, significantly more coastal than interior villagers were observed watching television at night, an activity that may increase malaria risk by keeping villagers awake and out of bednets.
