The feeding habits of the bathypelagic, non-migratory myctophidDiaphus metopoclampusfrom a shrimp fishing ground area in the Strait of Sicily were analyzed. Overall, 296 adult specimens ranging from 50.8 to 92.8 mm standard length (SL) (mean SL = 72.9 ± 8.0 mm) were collected during two trawl surveys (October 2010 and May 2011) and their stomach contents were examined in order to provide new information on prey composition and feeding strategy of this poorly known lanternfish. Differences in diet depending on fish size and time (daylight and night) were also checked by statistical analysis.D. metopoclampusis a zooplanktivorous predator, consuming mainly Crustacea, but also Mollusca, Polychaeta, Chaetognatha, Taliacea and Actinopterygii, and showing a moderate opportunistic feeding strategy.D. metopoclampuscan be ascribed to the group of acyclic predators, since it seems to be a non-migrator myctophid that feeds when prey are available. Statistical analysis indicated a size-related shift in the diet ofD. metopoclampusfrom smaller prey organisms (e.g, Metridinidae) to larger ones (e.g, Euphausiidae and Myctophidae). The Strait of Messina is located at the centre of the Mediterranean Sea and is considered a biodiversity hotspot and an obligatory seasonal passage for different pelagic species such as sharks, marine mammals, and billfishes. For the first time, in the Strait of Messina, our research group tagged a Mediterranean spearfish (Tetrapturus belone) using a pop-up satellite archival tag (PSAT). The observation of abiotic parameters (depth, light, and temperature) recorded by the PSAT confirmed that the tagged specimen was predated after about nine hours. The tag was then regurgitated 14 days after the tag deployment date. The analysis of collected data seems to indicate that the predator may be an ectothermic shark, most likely the bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus).

Finding time-efficient and cost-effective data collection methods is a challenge when addressing aquatic litter pollution on a global scale. In this study, we analysed data on aquatic benthic debris collected worldwide by volunteer scuba divers through the Dive Against Debris® citizen science initiative, examining its relationship with spatial and socio-economic factors. Plastic-dominated litter was found in both marine (64 %) and freshwater (48 %) environments, followed by metal and glass. Lower litter abundances have been recorded in high income countries such as in Europe, Central Asia and North America. Plastic fragments and fishing lines were the most abundant seafloor litter items, while takeaway containers (aluminium cans, glass bottles) were dominant in freshwater environments. Single-use plastics, including objects for food and beverage consumption, accounted for about 1/3 of the total benthic aquatic debris. Our findings highlight the need to prioritise the fishing industry and change our fast-paced modern lifestyle. Citizen science initiatives, once data cleanup is conducted to overcome any bias, can provide valuable tools for better understanding and quantifying marine litter pollution. The suppression of recombination is considered a hallmark of sex chromosome evolution. However, previous research has identified undifferentiated sex chromosomes and sex determination by single SNP in the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili). We observed the same phenomena in the golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) of the same family Carangidae and discovered a different sex-determining SNP within the same gene Hsd17b1. We propose an evolutionary model elucidating the turnover of sex-determining mutations by highlighting the contrasting dynamics between purifying selection, responsible for maintaining W-linked Hsd17b1, and neutral evolution, which drives Z-linked Hsd17b1. Additionally, sporadic loss-of-function mutations in W-linked Hsd17b1 contribute to the conversion of W chromosomes into Z chromosomes. This model was directly supported by simulations, closely related species, and indirectly by zebrafish mutants. In the frame of the circular economy, bioplastics are considered a good alternative to conventional plastic materials. Until recently, only a few studies have focused on the occurrence and impact of bio-microplastics (bio-MPs) in aquatic environments, and there is a lack of a methodological approach to measure their amount in marine compartments. This research aimed to identify and validate a method for bio-MPs extraction from biota. A chemical digestion protocol suitable for conventional MPs, using potassium hydroxide (KOH), was applied for the detection, in mussels, of MPs made with Mater-Bi (MBi) from socks used in mussel farming. This method was tested on virgin MBi (VMBi) and aged (AMBi) MPs, ranging from 200 to 1000 μm in presence and absence of mussel tissues. Samples were analysed in pre- and post-digestion steps to assess the recovery rate, potential visual and size changes and polymer alteration in different bio-MPs size ranges. Results showed that MBi seems to be affected by KOH under pre-production conditions (VMBi), whereas in the AMBi treatment, which represents the environmentally realistic condition, the presence of fouling due to deployment at sea preserves MBi from the action of the alkaline agent. This approach allowed the recovery of small MPs, generally difficult to extract from biota, in an optimal visual condition and without polymer alteration. Despite the fraction of organic material in the MBi, these results suggested the suitability of this method and provided the assessment of the KOH effects on MBi-MPs under different environmental conditions. Finally, validation tests proved that the KOH protocol represents a reliable approach for detecting bio-MPs in marine organisms. The influence of the lunar cycle on bluefin tuna foraging in the upwelling area of the Strait of Messina was investigated by exploring trophic interaction with mesopelagic fish and cephalopod prey. To focus on how the lunar cycle could affect availability of mesopelagic prey for this predator, we tested potential differences in the diet related to each lunar phase. Moreover, we considered two potential impacts of the lunar cycle: the lunar irradiance and the strength of currents. Overall, 2672 prey items were mesopelagic fish and cephalopods, representing 60.7% of overall diet by number. The main mesopelagic fish prey items were lanternfishes and dragonfishes, while Onychoteuthis banksii was the most important cephalopod prey. In summary, the Strait of Messina has highly specific hydrodynamic and biological features which strongly depend on upwelling currents, which in turn are influenced by the lunar cycle (new and full moon with strong currents, quarters with fewer currents). Upwelling causes water mixing, bringing to the surface a large amount of mesopelagic fauna which become more readily available to tuna. Lunar irradiance contributes to the variation of prey composition, increasing the success of visual predation on mesopelagic resources at high light in the water column.

The aim of the study is to compare the qualitative and semi-quantitative profile of the polyphenol fraction purified from the leaf (BLPF) and fruit (BFPF) of bergamot ( Citrus bergamia ), and to evaluate their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. The analytical qualitative profile was carried out by LC-ESI/MS using three different approaches: targeted (searching analytes already reported in bergamot extract), semi-targeted (a selective search of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutarate [HMG] derivatives involved in the cholesterol reducing activity of BPF) and untargeted. A total number of 108 compounds were identified by using the three approaches, 100 of which are present in both the extracts thus demonstrating a good qualitative overlapping of polyphenols between the two extracts. The antioxidant activity was higher for BLPF in respect to BFPF but when normalized in respect to the polyphenol content they were almost overlapping. Both the extracts were found to dose dependently inhibit cell inflammation stimulated with IL-1α. In conclusion, the comparison of the qualitative and quantitative profile of polyphenols as well as of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of bergamot leaf and fruit well indicates that leaf is a valid source of bergamot polyphenol extraction and an even richer source of polyphenol in respect to the fruit.

This field trial was designed to test the efficacy, in terms of treatment and prevention, of the fipronil 10%+(S)-methoprene 9% combination against immature and adult stages of Rhipicephalus sanguineus in naturally infested dogs, and to assess the effect of a single plain water exposure. Twenty-four dogs of various age, sex, weight and coat length were divided into two homogeneous groups, treated (T) and control (C), and housed into twin outdoor kennels. Trial baseline was designed as day 0, when dogs from group T were treated with a commercial spot-on formulation of fipronil 10%+(S)-methoprene 9%, while subjects from group C were left untreated and served as control. After treatment, tick load for each included dog was estimated, for both adult and immature ticks, using the localization and count over the entire body surface at the following time-points: day 2, to evaluate the speed of kill and at days 7, 14, 21 and 28 to assess the persistence of efficacy. The effect of water exposure on the product efficacy was tested at day 14 of the study, when six dogs, homogenously selected from group T, were soaked through with plain water. The overall tick load in dogs from group C was high throughout the entire study period, ranging from 103.2 (day 28) to 161.3 (day 0), and confirmed the high tick pressure. Speed of kill calculated at 48 h post-treatment was slightly higher for adult ticks (96.2%) than for immature stages (91.6%). Compared to the control, dogs treated with the fipronil+(S)-methoprene maintained a significantly lower mean tick load for both adult and immature stages in the four weeks of observation. Persistence of efficacy against immature stages ranged from 97.1% the first week, 99.6% second week, 99.7 third week and 93.1% in the last week. In the same way, efficacy against adult ticks was constantly high, shifting from 94.5% to 92.5%. Overall efficacy (adults+immatures) was the strongest in the first two weeks (i.e., 96.1% and 96.6%) and lowered in the two remaining weeks (i.e., 94.2% and 93.4%). Results showed that water exposure did not affect the activity and persistence of the tested combination. Background and Aims: The authors evaluated the accuracy of ultrasonographic findings compared to hysteroscopic and histological results in the diagnosis of anomalous uterine bleeding in menopause., Methods: Forty-eight women suffering from the above pathology and attending the Preventive Gynecology outpatient clinic of Department C of the Gynecology and Obstetrics faculty at Turin University during the period between September 1996 and July 1997, underwent first ultasonography using a transvaginal probe and then outpatient hysteroscopy with endometrial biopsy., Results: A total overlap between the ultrasonographic image, hysteroscopic results and histological diagnosis was only obtained in the group of menopausal patients., Conclusions: In line with the data reported in the literature, the authors imposed a cut-off endometrial thickness of 4 mm above which further diagnostic tests were performed using hysteroscopy with targeted biopsy.

Following a review of the literature, the authors examine the drugs which are currently used to treat anomalous uterine bleeding during menopause, illustrating their aims and justifying the rationale underlying their use. They conclude by stating that a satisfactory treatment often does not exist, but it is the task of the specialist to gauge the level and sequence of treatments in order to achieve the hoped-for result.

Having made a detailed list of the invasive and non-invasive diagnostic techniques used to evaluate anomalous uterine bleeding in menopause, the authors conclude by affirming that hysteroscopy undoubtedly represents the most reliable diagnostic technique and that echography should be the preferred first diagnostic step since it allows the adnexa to be examined and is less invasive and cheaper.

Anomalous uterine bleeding accounts for approximately two-thirds of the causes of outpatient gynecological check-ups for women in menopause. The high incidence of this pathology raises considerable problems from a clinical and social point of view. In this paper the authors outline the main causes of both organic and functional bleeding.

Aim: To evaluate the commonly adopted ventriculographic and coronarographic criteria of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy., Population: Eleven cases of obstructive cardiomyopathy, 14 non-obstructive cardiomyopathies, 15 discrete subaortic stenoses, 10 valvular aortic stenoses, and 12 cases of hypertensive heart disease. The diagnosis had been arrived at by independent clinical, electrocardiographic, echocardiographic and haemodynamic methods, as appropriate., Methods: Retrospective "blind" examination of biplane left ventriculography (30 degrees right anterior oblique, 60 degrees left anterior oblique, with cranial tilt) and coronary arteriography. We looked for the following features: subaortic chamber, asymmetric septal hypertrophy, peculiar left ventricular shape and systolic obliteration, systolic anterior movement of the mitral leaflets, systolic narrowing or compression of epicardial coronary arteries and septal perforators., Results and Conclusions: The following left ventricular features were significantly more frequent in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, than in other forms: subaortic chamber, "banana" configuration in systole, subaortic conus, asymmetric hypertrophy, systolic anterior movement of the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve, and mitral regurgitation. A subaortic chamber was seen both in the obstructive form and in the discrete subaortic stenosis, but the cranial left anterior oblique projection could easily discriminate between them. If non-obstructive cardiomyopathy is defined with the current criteria (provocable pressure gradient of < or = 30 mm Hg in a patient with left ventricular hypertrophy of no known cause), no distinctive angiographic features can distinguish it from other forms of secondary left ventricular hypertrophy.

Twenty-six cases of fetal choroid plexus cysts were diagnosed using ultrasonography at the Ultrasound Out-patients clinic of the University of Turin during the period 1989-1991. In 21 of these cases fetal karyotype was ascertained since, as has been reported in the literature, cysts of the choroid plexus may be associated with an anomalous karyotype (trisome 18 or 21). One of the 21 cases had an altered karyotype (trisome 21) (4.2%). The Authors stress the importance of a detailed ultrasound study of fetal morphology since, in the presence of structural anomalies, the incidence of trisome 18 is much higher. On the basis of these data, prenatal diagnosis in the event of the echographic presence of choroid plexus cysts appears to be valid since the risk of chromosome anomalies is much higher than in 35-year-old women.

Background: Cardiac surgery has become a possible cause of ascending aortic dissection, particularly in patients who have undergone aortic valve replacement., Methods: From January 1979 to December 1989, 134 patients with angiographic evidence of aortic dissection, were studied in the Haemodinamic Laboratory of the University of Turin. Twelve of these patients (7 men and 5 women), mean age 51.6 years, had been previously operated for aortic valve replacement. We evaluated incidence, clinical and anatomic features of ascending aortic dissection in this group., Results: A dilated ascending aorta with a mean diameter of 4.92 cm. was noted in all these patients. The interval between valve replacement and diagnosis of aortic dissection was 57 months (range 1 day to 9 years). Reoperation was performed in 11 patients. Four intraoperative deaths occurred and 2 other patients died in the early post-operative period. Survival rate at 12 months was 50%. Our incidence of ascending aortic dissection after aortic valve replacement was 0.66% (10 patients out of 1499 operated for aortic valve replacement) and it is in agreement with reports from other Authors in literature., Conclusions: Replacement of the ascending aorta must be considered if an important dilatation of aortic root is found at time of aortic valve surgery. New efforts must be undertaken to identify patients at high risk for this complication because an elevated mortality rate is observed in reoperation for aortic dissection.

In 8 patients aged 41-66 years, a second left heart catheterisation done 27-98 months after the first study, demonstrated a pressure gradient across the aortic valve, that had not previously existed, or had been trivial. No significant change of the cardiac output had occurred. All but 1 patient were hypertensive. The etiology was rheumatic in 4, degenerative in 4. Electrocardiographic, radiographic, and echocardiographic evolution could not separate the patients with a gradient greater than or equal to 70 mmHg from those whose gradient was less than or equal to 40 mmHg. The intensity of the aortic component of the second heart sound, however, decreased in all former patients, and in only 1 of the latter. Aortic valvular stenosis can arise and rapidly develop in adult patients. Concomitant rheumatic mitral valve disease, coronary artery disease and hypertension can mask and/or modify symptoms, signs and laboratory findings. Changes of the aortic component of the second sound may suggest its occurrence.

In a preliminary study 10 cases of male sterility were treated with 800 mg/day per os of Samyr-Bioresearch over three months. Increased basal motiligy of spermatozoa was observed in 6 out of 10 cases. The results of the study confirm the value and efficacy of SAM in the treatment of male sterility.

Data are reported relating to the study of 100 pregnant women, aged between 30 and 49 years old, effected by one or more fibroma nodules on the body of the womb. From an analysis of results, it appears that appropriate obstetric care can significantly reduce the risk of both maternal and fetal complications.

Thromboembolic disease during pregnancy and confinement is an important cause of mortality and obstetric morbidity. The onset of thromboembolic disease is caused by vascular damage, stasis and hypercoagulability, factors which are all present during gestation. All A. agree that it is of fundamental importance to intervene immediately in cases of active thromboembolic disease, but also to take suitable prophylactic measures to prevent the onset of disease.
