Abstract

Modern physics experiments are frequently very complex, relying on multiple simultaneous events to happen in order to obtain the desired result. The experiment control system plays a central role in orchestrating the measurement setup: However, its development is often treated as secondary with respect to the hardware, its importance becoming evident only during the operational phase. Therefore, the AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) collaboration has created a framework for easily coding control systems, specifically targeting atomic, quantum, and antimatter experiments. This framework, called Total Automation of LabVIEW Operations for Science (TALOS), unifies all the machines of the experiment in a single entity, thus enabling complex high-level decisions to be taken, and it is constituted by separate modules, called MicroServices, that run concurrently and asynchronously. This enhances the stability and reproducibility of the system while allowing for continuous integration and testing while the control system is running. The system demonstrated high stability and reproducibility, running completely unsupervised during the night and weekends of the data-taking campaigns. The results demonstrate the suitability of TALOS to manage an entire physics experiment in full autonomy: being open-source, experiments other than the AEgIS experiment can benefit from it.

2. Coherent laser cooling with trains of ultrashort laser pulses

Abstract

We propose to extend coherent laser cooling from narrow-band to broad-band transitions by using trains of ultrashort broadband pulses. We study analytically two possible methods to reduce the momentum spread of a distribution by several units of photon momentum in a single spontaneous emission lifetime. We report on numerical simulations of one-dimensional laser cooling of a two-level system with realistic parameters. The technique introduced here is of high interest for efficient laser cooling of fast species with short lifetime such as positronium.

Abstract

A powerful and robust control system is a crucial, often neglected, pillar of any modern, complex physics experiment that requires the management of a multitude of different devices and their precise time synchronisation. The AEgIS collaboration presents CIRCUS, a novel, autonomous control system optimised for time-critical experiments such as those at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator and, more broadly, in atomic and quantum physics research. Its setup is based on Sinara/ARTIQ and TALOS, integrating the ALPACA analysis pipeline, the last two developed entirely in AEgIS. It is suitable for strict synchronicity requirements and repeatable, automated operation of experiments, culminating in autonomous parameter optimisation via feedback from real-time data analysis. CIRCUS has been successfully deployed and tested in AEgIS; being experiment-agnostic and released open-source, other experiments can leverage its capabilities.

Abstract

We report on laser cooling of a large fraction of positronium (Ps) in free-flight by strongly saturating the $1^3S$-$2^3P$ transition with a broadband, long-pulsed 243 nm alexandrite laser. The ground state Ps cloud is produced in a magnetic and electric field-free environment. We observe two different laser-induced effects. The first effect is an increase in the number of atoms in the ground state after the time Ps has spent in the long-lived $3^3P$ states. The second effect is the one-dimensional Doppler cooling of Ps, reducing the cloud's temperature from 380(20) K to 170(20) K. We demonstrate a 58(9) % increase in the coldest fraction of the Ps ensemble., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Low-temperature antihydrogen atoms are an effective tool to probe the validity of the fundamental laws of Physics, for example the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) for antimatter, and -generally speaking- it is obvious that colder atoms will increase the level of precision. After the first production of cold antihydrogen in 2002 [1], experimental efforts have substantially progressed, with really competitive results already reached by adapting to cold antiatoms some well-known techniques pre- viously developed for ordinary atoms. Unfortunately, the number of antihydrogen atoms that can be produced in dedicated experiments is many orders of magnitude smaller than of hydrogen atoms, so the development of novel techniques to enhance the production of antihydrogen with well defined (and possibly controlled) conditions is essential to improve the sensitivity. We present here some experimental results achieved by the AEgIS Collaboration, based at the CERN AD (Antiproton Decelerator) on the production of antihydrogen in a pulsed mode where the production time of 90% of atoms is known with an uncertainty of ~ 250 ns [2]. The pulsed antihydrogen source is generated by the charge-exchange reaction between Rydberg positronium (Ps*) and an antiproton (p¯): p¯ + Ps* → H¯* + e−, where Ps* is produced via the implantation of a pulsed positron beam into a mesoporous silica target, and excited by two consecutive laser pulses, and antiprotons are trapped, cooled and manipulated in Penning-Malmberg traps. The pulsed production (which is a major milestone for AEgIS) makes it possible to select the antihydrogen axial temperature and opens the door for the tuning of the antihydrogen Rydberg states, their de-excitation by pulsed lasers and the manipulation through electric field gradients. In this paper, we present the results achieved by AEgIS in 2018, just before the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), as well as some of the ongoing improvements to the system, aimed at exploiting the lower energy antiproton beam from ELENA [3].

Abstract

L’hétérogénéité des classes peut entraîner des difficultés pour l'enseignant, mais est aussi une formidable ressource pour permettre l'apprentissage de tous, dès lors que les élèves font preuve de solidarité et de bienveillance. En effet, la pédagogie coopérative, pédagogie globale dont font partie le dispositif du tutorat et l’apprentissage collaboratif, responsabilise et autonomise les élèves tout autant qu'elle les amène à l'aide et à l'entraide entre pairs. Ce document résulte ainsi d'un besoin, celui d'un professeur des écoles stagiaire, parfois démuni face à sa classe, qui tente donc de se construire des outils pour permettre la réussite de l'ensemble de sa classe et d'y promouvoir le principe de solidarité. Ce travail est donc une recherche théorique ainsi qu'une analyse des pratiques ayant lieu au sein de ma classe. L'objectif est de tenter de comprendre les fondements de ces démarches ainsi que les mises en place possibles, tout en gardant une distance critique afin de permettre leurs améliorations futures.

Abstract

Multi-strange baryon and antibaryon production is expected to be a useful probe in the search for quark-gluon plasma formation. We present the transverse mass distributions of negative particles, Λ' s , Λ ' s and Ξ − ' s produced in sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon and give the corrected rations Λ /Λ, Ξ − /Λ and Ξ − / Λ . Our ratio Ξ − / Λ appears to be larger than that from pp interactions.

Abstract

Production of multi-strange baryons and antibaryons is expected to be a useful indicator in the search for Quark-Gluon Plasma formation. Production of Ξ− and Ξ − has been observed for the first time in ultra-relativistic heavy ion interactions by the WA85 Experiment. We describe the procedure used to select these cascade candidates and show that Ξ− and Ξ − decays can be identified. Preliminary ratios of Ξ/Ξ production in sulphur-tungsten and proton-tungsten interactions are also presented.

Abstract

Preliminary results from the WA85 Experiment at the CERN Omega Spectrometer are presented. A 200 A GeV/c beam of 22S ions was used with a tungsten target. The apparatus is used to detect V°s and charged tracks in the range PT > 0.9 GeV/c and 2.3 Λ, Λ and cascade particles is discussed. A study of the multiplicity dependence of Λ, Λ and hadron production is presented.

Abstract

Results from the WA85 Experiment at the CERN Ω Spectrometer are presented. A 200 A GeV/ c beam of 32 S ions was used with a tungsten target. The apparatus is used to detect V 0, s and charged tracks in the range p T > 0.9 GeV/ c and 2.3 Y lab Λ and negative hadrons all show a linear increase with rapidity density in the range 70–140 as expected from models based on a superposition of independent NN collisions.

Abstract

We study the production of meson resonance at pT≥2 GeV/c in π- Be interactions at two beam energies (150 and 300 GeV/c). The motivation is to look for the higher twist (HT) production mechanism, expected to exist besides standard hadron production through the fragmentation process of scattered quarks and gluons, the so-called leading twist (LT) mechanism. We show that the φ, K*0 (892) and K*0 (892) are found free from HT effects with a good accuracy, as expected from HT estimates and QCD sum rules. The magnitudes of the f2(1270) and ρ0 mesons signals are found larger than expected from the standard Lund (LT) Monte Carlo and from information provided by e+ e- annihilation experiments. The possible connection of these excesses with HT physics is discussed. We also report the first evidence for the production of f0(975) mesons in hadronic experiments at large pT. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

We present the analysis of data samples taken by the WA77 experiment for π- interactions at 300 and 150 GeV/c. The trigger selects a pair of oppositely charged particles with pT≥2 GeV/c balancing the transverse momentum of a third high-pT track. The primary aim of this experiment was the search for higher-twist production, mainly that of vector mesons. Since there are definite predictions for the polarization of mesons produced in fragmentation and through the higher-twist mechanism, we study the polarization properties of clearly identified mesons, namely the Φ and f2(1270) mesons. The results are compatible with no polarization. This can be interpreted as a production dominantly due to parton fragmentation. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

We study the shape of the invariant mass spectra of several resonances produced at PT≧2.0 GeV/c and observed through two-particle final states, namely the f2(1270), K*(892), {Mathematical expression}, K*(1430), and {Mathematical expression} mesons. The data sample comes from π- Be interactions at Plab=150 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c which have been collected using the OMEGA spectrometer at CERN. We find that although these meson resonances have their masses and widths consistent with the corresponding world average values, their shapes are all subject to the same kind of distortion: their low-mass tail is enhanced while their high-mass tail is sharply cut. This observation indicates that meson resonances produced in the fragmentation of quarks and gluons are distorted by the same damping factor in a way which preserves their masses and lifetimes. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

The transverse momentum distributions for {Mathematical expression} and φ{symbol} (1020) have been studied in the pt region between 2 and 4 GeV/c and central rapidity. The data analysed come from the WA77 experiment at CERN with a 300 GeV/c π- beam incident on a Be target. These distributions are well described by the function pt-n with n∼8. A sample of simulated events from the Lund Monte Carlo in the same experimental conditions reproduces well the data. © 1993 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

We have studied the reactions {Mathematical expression} where the {Mathematical expression} system is centrally produced, at 85 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c using the CERN Omega spectrometer. A spin-parity analysis of the KS0K±π∓ system shows the presence of a strong JPC=1++ signal which we identify as the E/f1 (1420) meson. We also find evidence for the decay E/f1(1420)→KS0KS0π0 which determines the C-parity of this state to be positive. Alternative explanations of the data have been tested and ruled out. Hence we obtain the quantum numbers of the E/f1 (1420) to be IG(JPC)=0+(1+). © 1992 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Production of oppositely charged particle pairs at large pT is studied, where both particles, are in the central rapidity region within one unit of rapidity and nearby in azimuth. The data sample, which comes from π- Be interactions obtained using the CERN OMEGA spectrometer, contains events with a pair of oppositely charged particles having pT≧2 GeV/c recoiling, against a third one with pT≧1 GeV/c. Our data provide new information on short range correlations involving the production of the nine possible pairs made from (π+, K+, p) and {Mathematical expression}. Comparison with Lund Monte Carlo predictions is made. Apart from proton yields, the model reproduces correctly our data. The main discrepancies observed with protons can be attributed to hard scattering of diquarks from the target nucleons. © 1992 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

We have studied the ππ and K Mathematical expression systems centrally produced in proton proton collisions at 300 GeV/c and π+/p proton collisions at 85 GeV/c using the CERN Ω spectrometer. Clear evidence for S*/fo(975) production is observed. An analysis performed on the π+ π- mass spectrum in the 1.0 GeV region, using a coupled channel formalism, shows that it is possible to describe the S*/fo(975) effect with one single resonance once interference of the S*/fo(975) with the S-wave background is introduced. The resulting S*/fo(975) parameters are mo=979±4MeV, gπ=0.28±0.04, gK=0.56±0.18 corresponding to a pole position on sheet II at (1001±2)-i(36±4) MeV. Evidence is also found for a structure having a mass of 1472±12 MeV and a width of 195±33 MeV. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Multi-strange baryon and antibaryon production is expected to be a useful probe in the search for quark-gluon plasma formation. We present the transverse mass distributions of negative particles, LAMBDAs, LAMBDAs-BAR and XI-s produced in sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon and give the corrected ratios LAMBDA-BAR/LAMBDA, XI-/LAMBDA and XI–BAR/LAMBDA-BAR. Our ratio XI–BAR/LAMBDA-BAR appears to be larger than that from pp interactions.
