Abstract

NA61/SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) is a multi-purpose experimental facility to study hadron production in hadron-proton, hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. It recorded the first physics data with hadron beams in 2009 and with ion beams (secondary 7Be beams) in 2011. NA61/SHINE has greatly profited from the long development of the CERN proton and ion sources and the accelerator chain as well as the H2 beamline of the CERN North Area. The latter has recently been modified to also serve as a fragment separator as needed to produce the Be beams for NA61/SHINE. Numerous components of the NA61/SHINE set-up were inherited from its predecessors, in particular, the last one, the NA49 experiment. Important new detectors and upgrades of the legacy equipment were introduced by the NA61/SHINE Collaboration. This paper describes the state of the NA61/SHINE facility - the beams and the detector system - before the CERN Long Shutdown I, which started in March 2013. © CERN 2014 for the benefit of the NA61/SHINE collaboration..

Abstract

We present experimental results on inclusive spectra and mean multiplicitiesof negatively charged pions produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incidentprojectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c ($\sqrt{s} = $ 6.3, 7.7,8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively). The measurements were performed usingthe large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super ProtonSynchrotron. Two-dimensional spectra are determined in terms of rapidity and transversemomentum. Their properties such as the width of rapidity distributions and theinverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra are extracted and theircollision energy dependences are presented. The results on inelastic p+pinteractions are compared with the corresponding data on central Pb+Pbcollisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The results presented in this paper are part of the NA61/SHINE ion programdevoted to the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and searchfor the critical point of strongly interacting matter. They are required forinterpretation of results on nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions.

Abstract

Spectra of KS0 mesons and Λ hyperons were measured in p + C interactions at 31 GeV/c with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The data were collected with an isotropic graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections, charged pion spectra, and charged kaon spectra were previously measured using the same data set. Results on KS0 and Λ production in p + C interactions serve as a reference for the understanding of the enhancement of strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Moreover, they provide important input for the improvement of neutrino flux predictions for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. Inclusive production cross sections for KS0 and Λ are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 0 up to 240 mrad. The results are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. The KS0 mean multiplicity in production processes 〈nKS0〉 and the inclusive cross section for KS0 production σKS0 were measured and amount to 0.127 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.022 (sys) and 29.0 ± 1.6 (stat) ± 5.0 (sys) mb, respectively. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Two-particle correlation functions of negative hadrons over wide phase space, and transverse mass spectra of negative hadrons and deuterons near mid-rapidity have been measured in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A novel Coulomb correction procedure for the negative two-particle correlations is employed making use of the measured oppositely charged particle correlation. Within an expanding source scenario these results are used to extract the dynamic characteristics of the hadronic source, resolving the ambiguities between the temperature and transverse expansion velocity of the source, that are unavoidable when single and two particle spectra are analysed separately. The source shape, the total duration of the source expansion, the duration of particle emission, the freeze-out temperature and the longitudinal and transverse expansion velocities are deduced.

Abstract

This paper presents measurements of production cross sections and inelastic cross sections for the following reactions: 60 GeV/c protons with C, Be, Al targets and 120 GeV/c protons with C and Be targets. The analysis is performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. First measurements are obtained using protons at 120 GeV/c, while the results for protons at 60 GeV/c are compared with previously published measurements. These interaction cross section measurements are critical inputs for neutrino flux prediction in current and future accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiments. publishedVersion

Abstract

Results are presented from a search for the decays D-0-> K(-)pi(+) and (D) over bar (0)-> K(+)pi(-) in a sample of 3.8x10(6) central Pb-Pb events collected with a beam energy of 158A GeV by NA49 at the CERN SPS. No signal is observed. An upper limit on D-0 production is derived and compared to predictions from several models.

Abstract

The transverse mass m(t) distributions for antiprotons are measured at midrapidity for minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV and for central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, and 80A GeV beam energies in the fixed target experiment NA49 at the CERN SPS. The rapidity density dn/dy, inverse slope parameter T, and mean transverse mass < m(t)> derived from the m(t) distributions are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality and compared to the relevant data on proton production. The shapes of the m(t) distributions of (p) over bar and p are very similar. The ratios of the particle yields, (p) over bar /p and (p) over bar/(Lambda) over bar, are also analyzed. The (p) over bar /p ratio exhibits an increase with decreasing centrality and a steep rise with increasing beam energy. The (Lambda) over bar/(Lambda) over bar ratio increases beyond unity with decreasing beam energy.

Abstract

Emission of pi(+/-), K+/-, phi, and Lambda was measured in near-central C + C and Si + Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for p + p, S + S, and Pb + Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as the onset of the formation of coherent systems of increasing size.

Abstract

Electric charge correlations were studied for p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.2 GeV with the NA49 large acceptance detector at the CERN SPS. In particular, long-range pseudorapidity correlations of oppositely charged particles were measured using the balance function method. The width of the balance function decreases with increasing system size and centrality of the reactions. This decrease could be related to an increasing delay of hadronization in central Pb+Pb collisions.

Abstract

Results are presented on Omega production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158A GeV beam energy. For the first time in heavy ion reactions, rapidity distributions and total yields were measured for the sum Omega(-)+(Omega) over bar (+) at 40A GeV and for Omega(-) and (Omega) over bar (+) separately at 158A GeV. The yields are strongly underpredicted by the string-hadronic UrQMD model but agree better with predictions from hadron gas models.

Abstract

Directed and elliptic flow measurements for charged pions and protons are reported as a function of transverse momentum, rapidity, and centrality for 40 and 158A GeV Pb + Pb collisions as recorded by the NA49 detector. Both the standard method of correlating particles with an event plane, and the cumulant method of studying multiparticle correlations are used. In the standard method the directed flow is corrected for conservation of momentum. In the cumulant method elliptic flow is reconstructed from genuine 4, 6, and 8-particle correlations, showing the first unequivocal evidence for collective motion in A+A collisions at SPS energies., To be published in Phys. Abstract

Experimental results on deuteron emission from central Pb + Pb collisions (E-beam = 158A GeV, fixed target), obtained by NA49 at the CERN SPS accelerator, are presented. The transverse mass in, distribution was measured near mid-rapidity (2.0 < y < 2.5) in the range of 0 < m(t) - m(0) < 0.9 GeV/c(2) (0 < p(t) < 2.0 GeV/c) for the 4% most central collisions. An exponential fit gives an inverse slope T-d = (450 +/- 30) MeV and a yield dN(d)/dy = 0.34 +/- 0.03. The coalescence factor B-2 (m(t) = m(0))=(3.5 +/- 1.0) . 10(-4) GeV2 and its m(t)-dependence are deter-mined and discussed in terms of a model that includes the collective expansion of the source created in a collision. The derived Gaussian size parameter R-G Of the emission volume is consistent with earlier HBT results on the source of pion emission. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Yields and phase space distributions of phi -mesons emitted from p + p (minimum bias trigger), p + Pb (at various centralities) and central Pb + Pb collisions are reported (E-beam = 158 A GeV). The decay phi –> K+K- was used for identification. The phi/pi ratio is found to increase by a factor of 3.0 +/- 0.7 from inelastic p + p to central Pb + Pb. Significant enhancement in this ratio is also observed in subclasses of p + p events (characterized by high charged-particle multiplicity) as well as in the forward hemisphere of central p + Pb collisions. In Pb + Pb no shift or significant broadening of the phi -peak is seen. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Net proton and negative hadron spectra for central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron were measured and compared to spectra from lighter systems. Net baryon distributions were derived from those of net protons. Stopping (rapidity shift with respect to the beam) and mean transverse momentum [p(T)] of net baryons increase with system size. The rapidity density of negative hadrons scales with the number of participant nucleons for nuclear collisions, whereas their [p(T)] is independent of system size. The [p(T)] dependence upon particle mass and system size is consistent with larger transverse flow velocity at midrapidity for Pb + Pb compared to S + S central collisions.

Abstract

The NA49 detector is a wide acceptance spectrometer for the study of hadron production in p + p, p + A, and A + A collisions at the CERN SPS. The main components are 4 large-volume TPCs for tracking and particle identification via dE/dx. TOF scintillator arrays complement particle identification Calorimeters for transverse energy determination and triggering, a detector for centrality selection in p + A collisions, and beam definition detectors complete the set-up. A description of all detector components is given with emphasis on new technical realizations. Performance and operational experience are discussed in particular with respect to the high track density environment of central Pb + Pb collisions. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The two-proton correlation function at midrapidity from Pb + Pb central collisions at 158 A GeV has been measured by the NA49 experiment. The results are compared to model predictions from static thermal Gaussian proton source distributions and transport models rqmd and venus. An effective proton source size is determined by minimizing chi(2)/ndf between the correlation functions of the data and those calculated for the Gaussian sources, yielding sigma(eff) = 3.85 +/- 0.15(stat.)(-0.25)(+0.60)(syst.) fm. Abstract

We present first data on event-by-event fluctuations in the average transverse momentum of charged particles produced in Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. This measurement provides previously unavailable information allowing sensitive tests of microscopic and thermodynamic collision models and to search for fluctuations expected to occur in the vicinity of the predicted QCD phase transition. We find that the observed variance of the event-by-event average transverse momentum is consistent with independent particle production modified by the known two-particle correlations due to quantum statistics and final state interactions and folded with the resolution of the NA49 apparatus. For two specific models of non-statistical fluctuations in transverse momentum limits are derived in terms of fluctuation amplitude. We show that a significant part of the parameter space for a model of isospin fluctuations predicted as a consequence of chiral symmetry restoration in a non-equilibrium scenario is excluded by our measurement. Abstract

Charged and neutral strange particle production was studied by the NA49 experiment at CERN. Preliminary inclusive spectra are presented for K^+/-, K^0_S, Phi, Lamda, Antilamda and ksi^+/- particles, measured in a region close to mid-rapidity, for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. An enhanced strange particle production relative to properly scaled nucleon-nucleon collisions is observed, but its strength is similar to lighter S + nucleus system. The enhancement is stronger for multistrange particles.

Abstract

We report measurements of Xi(-) and (Xi)over-bar(+) hyperon absolute yields as a function of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Ph + Pb collisions. At midrapidity, dN/dy = 2.29 +/- 0 12 for Xi(-), and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for (Xi)over-bar(+), leading to the ratio of (Xi)over-bar(+)/Xi(-) = 0.23 +/- 0.03. Inverse slope parameters fitted to the measured transverse mass spectra are of the order of T approximate to 300 MeV near mid-rapidity. The estimated total yield of Xi(-) particles in Pb+ Pb central interactions amounts to 7.4 +/- 1.0 per collision. Comparison to Xi(-) production in properly scaled p + p reactions at the same energy reveals a dramatic enhancement (about one order of magnitude) of Xi(-) production in Pb + Pb central collisions over elementary hadron interactions. Abstract

The directed and elliptic flow of protons and charged pions has been observed from the semicentral collisions of a 158 GeV/nucleon Ph beam with a Pb target. The rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the flow has been measured. The directed flow of the pions is opposite to that of the protons but both exhibit negative flow at low p(t). The elliptic flow of both is fairly independent of rapidity but rises with p(t).

Abstract

The composition of forward-going projectile spectator matter in fixed-target Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A.GeV at the CERN SPS has been studied as a function of centrality. The data were measured with the NA49 veto calorimeter. We observe that forward-going spectator matter in central collisions consists of 9 neutrons, 7 protons, and half a deuteron on average. At large impact parameters most spectator nucleons are bound in fragments. The relative resolution of the average impact parameter derived from the measurement of spectator neutrons is roughly 19% in the range from zero to half maximum impact parameters.

Abstract

Two-particle correlation functions of negative hadrons over wide phase space, and transverse mass spectra of negative hadrons and deuterons near mid-rapidity have been measured in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A novel Coulomb correction procedure for the negative two-particle correlations is employed making use of the measured oppositely charged particle correlation. Within an expanding source scenario these results are used to extract the dynamic characteristics of the hadronic source, resolving the ambiguities between the temperature and transverse expansion velocity of the source; that are unavoidable when single and two particle spectra are analysed separately. The source shape, the total duration of the source expansion, the duration of particle emission, the freeze-out temperature and the longitudinal and transverse expansion velocities are deduced.

Abstract

Aim: of the present work was assessment of possibility to use modern electroimpedace methods for the study of activity of the heart. Electroimpemdace methods of measurement for many years remained in the shadow of other diagnostic methods because of low accuracy in evaluation of various parameters. At present, there are technologies of measurement which allow to carry out electroimpedance investigations of cardiac activity dynamically and with acceptable accuracy. In this article, we present methods of electroimpedace measurements created in Institute of Biomedical Equipment of N.E. Bauman Technical University. These methods allow to assess dynamics of movement of ventricles of the heart, to evaluate volume parameters of cardiac activity and all temporal phases of activity of cardiac chambers. We also present data of studies on healthy volunteers and patients of cardiological profile. It has been shown that patients with atrial fibrillation have substantially increased duration of electrical and mechanical activity of atria and ventricles as well as lowed ejection fraction compared with other participants of experiments.

Abstract

Results are presented on Omega production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158A GeV beam energy. For the first time in heavy ion reactions, rapidity distributions and total yields were measured for the sum Omega(-) + Omega(+) at 40A GeV and for Omega(-) and Omega(+) separately at 158A GeV. The yields are strongly underpredicted by the string-hadronic UrQMD model but agree better with predictions from hadron gas models.

Abstract

Emission of pi+/-, K+/-, phi, and Lambda was measured in near-central C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for p+p, S+S, and Pb+Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as the onset of the formation of coherent systems of increasing size.

Abstract

Production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was measured in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are given for all three energies. The Lambda/pi ratio at midrapidity and in full phase space shows a pronounced maximum between the highest BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron and 40A GeV CERN Super Proton Synchrotron energies, whereas the Lambda/pi ratio exhibits a monotonic increase.

Abstract

Results of resonance searches in the Xi(-)pi(-), Xi(-)pi(+), Xi;(+)pi(-), and Xi;(+)pi(+) invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=17.2 GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow Xi(-)pi(-) baryon resonance with mass of 1.862+/-0.002 GeV/c(2) and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c(2). The significance is estimated to be above 4.2sigma. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic Xi(--)(3/2) baryon with S=-2, I=3 / 2, and a quark content of (dsdsū). At the same mass, a peak is observed in the Xi(-)pi(+) spectrum which is a candidate for the Xi(0)(3/2) member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of (dsus[-]d). The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of fluctuations from event to event in the production of strange particles in collisions of heavy nuclei. The ratio of charged kaons to charged pions is determined for individual central Pb+Pb collisions. After accounting for the fluctuations due to detector resolution and finite number statistics we derive an upper limit on genuine nonstatistical fluctuations, which could be related to a first- or second-order QCD phase transition. Such fluctuations are shown to be very small.

Abstract

The authors propose a working scheme to choose the method of treatment of diaphyseal fractures of segments of the upper and lower extremities with an obligatory application of perosseous osteosynthesis by the Ilizarov apparatus in combination with other curative measures. The scheme described was used in 26 patients and gave good anatomical and functional results.
