2. Eco-Spatial Indices as an Effective Tool for Climate Change Adaptation in Residential Neighbourhoods—Comparative Study.

Abstract

Eco-spatial indices are commonly used tools to improve the quality of the environment in cities. Initially modelled on the Berlin BAF, indices have evolved to address current challenges, particularly climate change adaptation. The Ratio of Biologically Vital Areas (RBVA), introduced in Poland in the mid-1990s, is an early planning tool for implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbSs) at the site level. This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of the RBVA in Poland compared to its counterparts in Oslo and Malmö. The study employed a serious simulation game developed under the Norwegian-funded CoAdapt project, testing six development scenarios, varied in terms of applied NbSs, for a typical multi-family housing estate. The adaptive potential of the tested scenarios was assessed based on the values of five environmental parameters calculated in the game; that is, air temperature, oxygen production, CO2 sequestration, rainwater harvesting, and biodiversity. The findings revealed that the RBVA, in its current form, has limited effectiveness in supporting climate adaptation. Its two-dimensional nature makes it less effective than the more comprehensive Green Factors used in Oslo and Malmö. The research presented in the article proves that better-constructed indices result in the efficiency of applied NbSs and consequently better adaptation to climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This open access book is about public open spaces, about people, and about the relationship between them and the role of technology in this relationship. It is about different approaches, methods, empirical studies, and concerns about a phenomenon that is increasingly being in the centre of sciences and strategies – the penetration of digital technologies in the urban space. As the main outcome of the CyberParks Project, this book aims at fostering the understanding about the current and future interactions of the nexus people, public spaces and technology. It addresses a wide range of challenges and multidisciplinary perspectives on emerging phenomena related to the penetration of technology in people’s lifestyles - affecting therefore the whole society, and with this, the production and use of public spaces. Cyberparks coined the term cyberpark to describe the mediated public space, that emerging type of urban spaces where nature and cybertechnologies blend together to generate hybrid experiences and enhance quality of life.

Abstract

This document contains the comments made by Gabriela Maksymiuk in “Digital methods and social practices in public space – some salient themes ”., The possibility of ICT applications in designing outdoor public spaces is essential. In order to enhance a healthy lifestyle and bring people outdoors, it is crucial to study the behaviour of ICT users and understand their expectations related to attractive public spaces. Currently in Poland, Wi-Fi technology is widespread,mainly in buildings, and outdoor hot-spots are still rather an exception. The research results let us identify 4 main groups of Wi-Fi users characterised by different activities performed in urban spaces: focused on work; focused on entertainment; transit pedestrians; or, tourists. For each user group studied, its preferences, needs and expectations in regard to successful and attractive public open spaces were identified. Abstract

The authors of this presented study formulated research assumptions that the Internet and new technologies may interact with the landscape architecture. The presence of hot spots in public spaces can help to increase the amount of time spent outdoors, improve relationships between users and enhance their quality of life. The conducted research included a review of literature related to ICT applications, as well as a survey of global design solutions concerning the introduction of ICT components into public spaces. Moreover, the study was based on the results of previous research by the same authors on behaviour and social expectations of ICT users in relation to leisure spaces. The research results let us frame design guidelines and principles for development of outdoor hotspots. Abstract

Activity c) represents original studies about the effects of landscape on economic activities and society welfare. These “ad-hoc studies” in Activity c) can be seen as the logical consequence of Activity a) and b): In the ad-hoc study, the knowledge gaps in the process of local answering the project’s guiding questions, that have been detected during Activity a) and b), shall be filled. Furthermore, the ad-hoc studies test innovative methodologies likely to be sufficient in assessing the cause chain effects between landscape and rural development development/regional competitiveness. (At this, testing of methodologies is decided on case by case by the CLAIM consortium, depending on local need (and with a view of providing, altogether a coverage of different potential methods.) Consequently, the different CSA ad-hoc studies do not follow a common methodological approach, as the different local basic conditions and knowledge gaps determine different needs and as a variety of methods shall be tested which could be suitable to address the projects objectives. Part 4 of D4.20 represents the basic report on the application of different methods to a answer the CSA specific research questions and on the final results of the ad-hoc studies. The report is organised country by country.

Abstract

While green infrastructure (GI) is now a widely referenced concept, in Poland it is still only discussed among academics and has yet to be implemented. In 2013, the EC recommended that Member States promote the implementation of GI approaches. In recent decades, ecological discourse has dominated Polish cities’ planning practice. In Warsaw, this discourse has evolved into the formation of the Warsaw Natural System (WNS) concept. This study examines means of transforming the WNS, which is strictly related to ecological discourse, into a Warsaw Green Infrastructure (WGI). In doing so, we utilise basic principles of GI, namely: integration, multifunctionality, connectivity, and multi-scale and multi-object approaches. Abstract

This open access book is about public open spaces, about people, and about the relationship between them and the role of technology in this relationship. It is about different approaches, methods, empirical studies, and concerns about a phenomenon that is increasingly being in the centre of sciences and strategies – the penetration of digital technologies in the urban space. As the main outcome of the CyberParks Project, this book aims at fostering the understanding about the current and future interactions of the nexus people, public spaces and technology. It addresses a wide range of challenges and multidisciplinary perspectives on emerging phenomena related to the penetration of technology in people’s lifestyles - affecting therefore the whole society, and with this, the production and use of public spaces. Cyberparks coined the term cyberpark to describe the mediated public space, that emerging type of urban spaces where nature and cybertechnologies blend together to generate hybrid experiences and enhance quality of life.
