The electron velocity distribution function in the plasma, formed by gas ionization with a sub-nanosecond, hundreds of megawatts power level microwave pulse, is studied by a theoretical model and by numerical 3D simulations, the results of which agree well and show that the distribution varies along the pulse as a decreasing power-law function at the rear of the pulse. Experiments performed in a waveguide filled with helium gas confirm that energetic (from several keV to several tens of keV) electrons remain in plasma long after the pulse has crossed the experimental volume. Understanding how features evolve across layers in deep neural networks is a fundamental challenge in mechanistic interpretability, particularly due to polysemanticity and feature superposition. While Sparse Autoencoders (SAEs) have been used to extract interpretable features from individual layers, aligning these features across layers has remained an open problem. In this paper, we introduce SAE Match, a novel, data-free method for aligning SAE features across different layers of a neural network. Our approach involves matching features by minimizing the mean squared error between the folded parameters of SAEs, a technique that incorporates activation thresholds into the encoder and decoder weights to account for differences in feature scales. Through extensive experiments on the Gemma 2 language model, we demonstrate that our method effectively captures feature evolution across layers, improving feature matching quality. We also show that features persist over several layers and that our approach can approximate hidden states across layers. Our work advances the understanding of feature dynamics in neural networks and provides a new tool for mechanistic interpretability studies.

The results obtained by estimating the contribution of $^8$Be and $^9$B nuclei to the coherent dissociation of $^{10}$C, $^{10}$B, and $^{12}$C relativistic nuclei in nuclear track emulsions (``white'' stars) are presented. The selection of ``white'' stars accompanied by $^9$B leads to a distinct peak appearing in the distribution of the excitation energy of 2$\alpha$2$p$ ensembles and having a maximum at 4.1 $\pm$ 0.3 MeV. A $^8$Be nucleus manifests itself in the coherent-dissociation reaction $^{10}$B $\to$ 2He + H with a probability of (25 $\pm$ 5)\%, (14 $\pm$ 3)\% of it being due to $^9$B decays. The ratio of the branching fractions of the $^9$B + $n$ and $^9$Be + $p$ mirror channels is estimated at 6 $\pm$ 1. An analysis of the relativistic dissociation of $^{12}$C nuclei in a nuclear track emulsion revealed nine 3$\alpha$ events corresponding to the Hoyle state.

We present a refined speckle-interferometric orbit of a binary system $\mu$ Cet, with the main component studied based on the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data, obtained at the SAO RAS 6-m telescope. The object was initially classified as a giant with chemical composition anomalies. As a result of our analysis, we conclude that the star belongs to the Main Sequence, to the class of non-peculiar stars. Analysis of photometric data from the TESS mission indicates that the main component of the system belongs to the $\gamma$ Dor pulsators., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Bulletin

In recent years, agents have become capable of communicating seamlessly via natural language and navigating in environments that involve cooperation and competition, a fact that can introduce social dilemmas. Due to the interleaving of cooperation and competition, understanding agents' decision-making in such environments is challenging, and humans can benefit from obtaining explanations. However, such environments and scenarios have rarely been explored in the context of explainable AI. While some explanation methods for cooperative environments can be applied in mixed-motive setups, they do not address inter-agent competition, cheap-talk, or implicit communication by actions. In this work, we design explanation methods to address these issues. Then, we proceed to demonstrate their effectiveness and usefulness for humans, using a non-trivial mixed-motive game as a test case. Lastly, we establish generality and demonstrate the applicability of the methods to other games, including one where we mimic human game actions using large language models.

Despite the fact that offline methods for Large Language Models (LLMs) alignment do not require a direct reward model, they remain susceptible to overoptimization. This issue arises when the trained model deviates excessively from the reference policy, leading to a decrease in sample quality. We propose a new paradigm of offline alignment methods, called Trust Region (including variants TR-DPO, TR-IPO, TR-KTO), which dynamically updates the reference policy throughout the training process. Our results show that TR alignment methods effectively mitigate overoptimization, enabling models to maintain strong performance even when substantially deviating from the initial reference policy. We demonstrate the efficacy of these approaches not only through toy examples that exhibit reduced overoptimization, but also through direct, side-by-side comparisons in specific tasks such as helpful and harmless dialogue, as well as summarization, where they surpass conventional methods. Additionally, we report significant improvements in general-purpose assistant setups with the Llama3 model on the AlpacaEval 2 and Arena-Hard benchmarks, highlighting the advantages of Trust Region methods over classical approaches.

Sulphur vacancies in MoS$_2$ on Au(111) have been shown to be negatively charged as reflected by a Kondo resonance. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to show that these vacancies serve as anchoring sites for thiol-based molecules (CF$_3$-3P-SH) with two distinct reaction products, one of them showing a Kondo resonance. Based on comparisons with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, including a random structure search and computation of energies and electronic properties at a hybrid exchange-correlation functional level, we conclude that both anchored molecules are charge neutral. One of them is an anchored intact CF$_3$-3P-SH molecule while the other one is the result of catalytically activated dehydrogenation to CF$_3$-3P-S with subsequent anchoring. Our investigations highlight a perspective of functionalizing defects with thiol-terminated molecules that can be equipped with additional functional groups, such as charge donor- or acceptor-moieties, switching units or magnetic centers.

Fluoride salts demonstrate significant potential for applications in next-generation nuclear reactors, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of their thermophysical properties for technological advancements. Experimental measurement of these properties poses challenges, due to factors such as high temperatures, impurity control, and corrosion. Consequently, precise computational modeling methods become essential for predicting the thermophysical properties of molten salts. In this work, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of several thermophysical properties of the eutectic salt mixture LiF-NaF-KF (FLiNaK) melt, including density, self-diffusion coefficients, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. We demonstrated the successful application of moment tensor potentials (MTP) as an accurate model for interatomic interactions in FLiNaK. Our results on thermophysical properties calculations exhibit strong agreement with experimental data. An important aspect of our methodology is the incorporation of an active learning scheme, which enables the generation of a robust and accurate potential, while maintaining a moderate-sized training dataset.

Recent advances in the study of cobaltites have unveiled their potential as a promising platform for realizing Kitaev physics in honeycomb systems and the Ising model in weakly coupled chain materials. In this manuscript, we explore the magnetic properties of pyroxene SrCoGe$_2$O$_6$ using a combination of neutron scattering, {\it ab initio} methods, and linear spin-wave theory. Through careful examination of inelastic neutron scattering powder spectra, we propose a modified Kitaev model to accurately describe the twisted chains of edge-sharing octahedra surrounding Co$^{2+}$ ions. The extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model, including a significant anisotropic bond-dependent exchange term with $K/|J|=0.96$, is identified as the key descriptor of the magnetic interactions in SrCoGe$_2$O$_6$. Furthermore, our heat capacity measurements reveal an effect of an external magnetic field (approximately 13~T) which shifts the system from a fragile antiferromagnetic ordering with $T_{\mathrm{N}}=9$~K to a field-induced state. We argue that pyroxenes, particularly those modified by substituting Ge with Si and its less extended $p$ orbitals, emerge as a novel platform for the Kitaev model. We study field-induced phase transitions of the minimal exchange model proposed earlier for BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, a candidate for Kitaev honeycomb model, using numerical minimization of classical spin clusters. We show that experimentally observed sequence of step-like transitions in magnetic field is realized in the phase diagram of the minimal model. Surprisingly, intermediate up-up-down plateau phase is stabilized only in the proximity of a double-zigzag$-$zigzag phase boundary. We systematically map out the region of stability of experimentally observed cascade of transitions and argue that BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ exchange parameters are close to a region of strong phase competition, which can explain suppressed saturation field., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We analyse the stationary current of Bose particles across the Bose-Hubbard chain connected to a battery, focusing on the effect of inter-particle interactions. It is shown that the current magnitude drastically decreases as the strength of inter-particle interactions exceeds the critical value which marks the transition to quantum chaos in the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We found that this transition is well reflected in the non-equilibrium many-body density matrix of the system. Namely, the level-spacing distribution for eigenvalues of the density matrix changes from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson distributions. With the further increase of the interaction strength, the Wigner-Dyson spectrum statistics changes back to the Poisson statistics which now marks fermionization of the bosonic particles. With respect to the stationary current, this leads to the counter-intuitive dependence of the current magnitude on the particle number., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

It was observed experimentally that after crossing a waveguide filled with a neutral gas, a short powerful microwave pulse leaves a periodic glow of plasma along the waveguide, persisting several tens of nanoseconds. A photonic crystal microcavity with the liquid crystal resonant layer tunable by heating has been implemented. The multiple vanishing resonant lines corresponding to optical bound states in the continuum are observed. The abrupt behaviour of the resonant linewidth near the vanishing point can be used for temperature sensing.

The microcavity in the form of a liquid crystal defect layer embedded in a one-dimensional photonic crystal is considered. The microcavity mode has a tunable radiation decay rate in the vicinity of a bound state in the continuum. It is demonstrated that coupling between the microcavity mode and a Tamm plasmon polariton results in hybrid Tamm-microcavity modes with a tunable Q factor. The measured spectral features of hybrid modes are explained in the framework of the temporal coupled mode theory.
