Ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), and temporal cortex (TE) all contribute to visual decision-making. Accumulating evidence suggests that vlPFC may play a central role in multiple cognitive operations, perhaps resembling domain-general regions of the human frontal lobe. We trained monkeys in a task calling for learning, retrieval, and spatial selection of rewarded target objects. Recordings of neural activity covered large areas of vlPFC, dlPFC, and TE. Results suggested a central role for vlPFC in each cognitive operation with strong coding of each task feature, while only location was strongly coded in dlPFC and current object identity in TE. During target selection, target location was communicated first from vlPFC to dlPFC, followed by extensive mutual support. In vlPFC, stimulus identities were independently coded in different task operations. The results suggest a central role for the inferior frontal convexity in controlling successive operations of a complex, multi-step task.

The relationship between the geometry of neural representations and the task being performed is a central question in neuroscience1–6. The primate prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a primary focus of inquiry in this regard, as under different conditions, PFC can encode information with geometries that either rely on past experience7–13or are experience agnostic3,14–16. One hypothesis is that PFC representations should evolve with learning4,17,18, from a format that supports exploration of all possible task rules to a format that minimises metabolic cost4,17,18and supports generalisation7,8. Here we test this idea by recording neural activity from PFC when learning a new rule (‘XOR rule’) from scratch. We show that PFC representations progress from being high dimensional and randomly mixed to low dimensional and rule selective, consistent with predictions from metabolically constrained optimised neural networks. We also find that this low-dimensional representation facilitates generalisation of the XOR rule to a new stimulus set. These results show that previously conflicting accounts of PFC representations can be reconciled by considering the adaptation of these representations across learning in the service of metabolic efficiency and generalisation.

Much animal learning is slow, with cumulative changes in behavior driven by reward prediction errors. When the abstract structure of a problem is known, however, both animals and formal learning models can rapidly attach new items to their roles within this structure, sometimes in a single trial. Frontal cortex is likely to play a key role in this process. To examine information seeking and use in a known problem structure, we trained monkeys in an explore/exploit task, requiring the animal first to test objects for their association with reward, then, once rewarded objects were found, to reselect them on further trials for further rewards. Many cells in the frontal cortex showed an explore/exploit preference aligned with one-shot learning in the monkeys' behavior: the population switched from an explore state to an exploit state after a single trial of learning but partially maintained the explore state if an error indicated that learning had failed. Binary switch from explore to exploit was not explained by continuous changes linked to expectancy or prediction error. Explore/exploit preferences were independent for two stages of the trial: object selection and receipt of feedback. SUMMARYThe dorsomedial posterior parietal cortex is part of a higher-cognition network implicated in elaborate processes underpinning memory formation, recollection, episodes reconstruction, and temporal information processing. Neural coding for complex episodic processing is however under-documented. Here we revealed a set of neural codes of “neuroethogram” in the primate parietal cortex. Analyzing neural responses in macaque dmPPC to naturalistic videos, we discovered several groups of neurons that are sensitive to different categories of ethogram-items and to low-level sensory features, as well as saccadic eye movement. The amount of information coded within these multiplex representations in turn increases our trained classifier decodability for different video-types. We also discovered that the processing of category and feature information by these neurons is sustained by accumulation of temporal information over a long timescale up to 30 s, corroborating its reported long temporal receptive windows. We performed an additional behavioral experiment and found that saccade-related activities could not account for the mixed neuronal responses elicited by the video stimuli. We further observed monkeys’ scan-paths and gaze consistency are modulated by video content. Taken altogether, these neural findings explain how dorsomedial PPC weaves fabrics of ongoing experiences together in real-time. Complex neural dynamics in the prefrontal cortex contribute to context-dependent decisions and attentional competition. To analyze these dynamics, we apply demixed principal component analysis to activity of a primate prefrontal cell sample recorded in a cued target detection task. The results track dynamics of cue and object coding, feeding into movements along a target present-absent decision axis in a low-dimensional subspace of population activity. For a single stimulus, object and cue coding are seen mainly in the contralateral hemisphere. Later, a developing decision code in both hemispheres may reflect interhemispheric communication. With a target in one hemifield and a competing nontarget in the other, each hemisphere initially encodes the contralateral object, but finally, decision coding is dominated by the task-relevant target. These findings further suggest that exchange of information between hemispheres plays a key role when attentional competition resolves. Tracking complex neural events in a low-dimensional activity subspace illuminates integration of neural codes towards task-appropriate behavior, comprising a building block of learned task structure in the prefrontal cortex.AUTHOR SUMMARYFlexible adaptive processing of information is integral for everyday goal-directed behavior. To unravel dynamic representation of task-relevant information, we analyzed population activity of a primate prefrontal cell sample in a cued target detection task. In a low-dimensional neural subspace, with separate axes for cue, object identity and decision, trajectories showed initial coding of cue and object in the contralateral hemisphere, followed by coding of the behavioral decision across both hemispheres. With target and nontarget stimuli in opposite hemifields, the data suggest initial coding of the contralateral object in each hemisphere. Object coding is then rapidly shut off for the nontarget, and followed by bilateral coding of the target decision. The results bring detailed insight into task structure and information flow within and between the two frontal lobes as a decision is made and attentional competition is resolved.

Methyl 3-substituted 131-deoxo-pyropheophorbides-a possessing the 7-methyl group were transformed into the corresponding 131-deoxo-pyropheophorbides-b bearing the 7-formyl group via the regioselective mono-dehydration of cis-7,8-diols to 7-hydroxymethyl-chlorins under mild acidic conditions. The exclusive production of the 71-hydroxy-chlorins without detection of the 81-hydroxy-chlorins in the reaction mixture did not depend on the 3-substituents. The regioselectivity was regulated by the 13-functional groups, and the ratio of the 81-OH over 71-OH products enhanced with an increase of the group electronegativity. Methyl mesopyropheophorbide-b (7-formyl-131-oxo-chlorin) was efficiently obtained by modifying methyl mesopyropheophorbide-a, one of the chlorophyll-a derivatives, through the protection of the 131-oxo moiety and the aforementioned mono-dehydration. The effects of the 7-substituents on the visible absorption spectra in a solution were comparable to those of naturally occurring, photosynthetically active chlorophylls-a/b and bacteriochlorophylls-c/e bearing the 7-methyl/formyl groups.

Complex cognition is dynamic, with each stage of a task requiring new cognitive processes appropriately linked to stimulus or other content. To investigate control over successive task stages, we recorded neural activity in lateral frontal and parietal cortex as monkeys carried out a complex object selection task, with each trial separated into phases of visual selection and learning from feedback. To study capacity limitation, complexity was manipulated by varying the number of object targets to be learned in each problem. Different task phases were associated with quasi-independent patterns of activity and information coding, with no suggestion of sustained activity linked to a current target. Object and location coding were largely parallel in frontal and inferior parietal cortex, though frontal cortex showed somewhat stronger object representation at feedback, and more sustained location coding at choice. At both feedback and choice, coding precision diminished as task complexity increased, matching a decline in performance. We suggest that, across successive task steps, there is radical but capacity-limited reorganization of frontoparietal activity, selecting different cognitive operations linked to their current targets.

Serial and parallel processing in visual search have been long debated in psychology but the processing mechanism remains an open issue. Serial processing allows only one object at a time to be processed, whereas parallel processing assumes that various objects are processed simultaneously. Here we present novel neural models for the two types of processing mechanisms based on analysis of simultaneously recorded spike trains using electrophysiological data from prefrontal cortex of rhesus monkeys while processing task-relevant visual displays. We combine mathematical models describing neuronal attention and point process models for spike trains. The same model can explain both serial and parallel processing by adopting different parameter regimes. We present statistical methods to distinguish between serial and parallel processing based on both maximum likelihood estimates and decoding the momentary focus of attention when two stimuli are presented simultaneously. Results show that both processing mechanisms are in play for the simultaneously recorded neurons, but neurons tend to follow parallel processing in the beginning after the onset of the stimulus pair, whereas they tend to serial processing later on. This could be explained by parallel processing being related to sensory bottom-up signals or feedforward processing, which typically occur in the beginning after stimulus onset, whereas top-down signals related to cognitive modulatory influences guiding attentional effects in recurrent feedback connections occur after a small delay, and is related to serial processing, where all processing capacities are being directed towards the attended object.Author summaryA fundamental question concerning processing of visual objects in our brain is how a population of cortical cells respond when presented with more than a single object in their receptive fields. Is one object processed at a time (serial processing), or are all objects processed simultaneously (parallel processing)? Inferring the dynamics of attentional states in simultaneously recorded spike trains from sensory neurons while being exposed to a pair of visual stimuli is key to advance our understanding of visual cognition. We propose novel statistical models and measures to quantify and follow the time evolution of the visual cognition processes right after stimulus onset. We find that in the beginning processing appears to be predominantly parallel, which develops into serial processing 150 – 200 ms after stimulus onset in prefrontal cortex of rhesus monkeys.

SummaryCognitive flexibility is fundamental to adaptive intelligent behavior. Prefrontal cortex has long been associated with flexible cognitive function, but the neurophysiological principles that enable prefrontal cells to adapt their response properties according to context-dependent rules remain poorly understood. Here, we use time-resolved population-level neural pattern analyses to explore how context is encoded and maintained in primate prefrontal cortex and used in flexible decision making. We show that an instruction cue triggers a rapid series of state transitions before settling into a stable low-activity state. The postcue state is differentially tuned according to the current task-relevant rule. During decision making, the response to a choice stimulus is characterized by an initial stimulus-specific population response but evolves to different final decision-related states depending on the current rule. These results demonstrate how neural tuning profiles in prefrontal cortex adapt to accommodate changes in behavioral context. Highly flexible tuning could be mediated via short-term synaptic plasticity.

The pFC plays a key role in flexible, context-specific decision making. One proposal [Machens, C. K., Romo, R., & Brody, C. D. Flexible control of mutual inhibition: A neural model of two-interval discrimination. Science, 307, 1121–1124, 2005] is that prefrontal cells may be dynamically organized into opponent coding circuits, with competitive groups of cells coding opposite behavioral decisions. Here, we show evidence for extensive, temporally evolving opponent organization in the monkey pFC during a cued target detection task. More than a half of all randomly selected cells discriminated stimulus category in this task. The largest set showed target-positive activity, with the strongest responses to the current target, intermediate activity for a nontarget that was a target on other trials, and lowest activity for nontargets never associated with the target category. Second most frequent was a reverse, antitarget pattern. In the ventrolateral frontal cortex, opponent organization was strongly established in phasic responses at stimulus onset; later, such activity was widely spread across dorsolateral and ventrolateral sites. Task-specific organization into opponent cell groups may be a general feature of prefrontal decision making.

Summary Prefrontal cortex has been proposed to show highly adaptive information coding, with neurons dynamically allocated to processing task-relevant information. To track this dynamic allocation in monkey prefrontal cortex, we used time-resolved measures of neural population activity in a simple case of competition between target (behaviorally critical) and nontarget objects in opposite visual hemifields. Early in processing, there were parallel responses to competing inputs, with neurons in each hemisphere dominated by the contralateral stimulus. Later, the nontarget lost control of neural activity, with emerging global control by the behaviorally critical target. The speed of transition reflected the competitive weights of different display elements, occurring most rapidly when relative behavioral significance was well established by training history. In line with adaptive coding, the results show widespread reallocation of prefrontal processing resources as an attentional focus is established., Highlights • Prefrontal neurons show classic properties of a limited attentional resource • Division of processing resources impairs accuracy of neural discriminations • As processing unfolds, neurons are reallocated to the most important stimuli • The speed and degree of reallocation depend on relative attentional weights, Like a flexible processing resource, prefrontal cortex can respond to many kinds of information. Prefrontal neurons code many kinds of behaviourally relevant visual information. In behaving monkeys, we used a cued target detection task to address coding of objects, behavioural categories and spatial locations, examining the temporal evolution of neural activity across dorsal and ventral regions of the lateral prefrontal cortex (encompassing parts of areas 9, 46, 45A and 8A), and across the two cerebral hemispheres. Within each hemisphere there was little evidence for regional specialisation, with neurons in dorsal and ventral regions showing closely similar patterns of selectivity for objects, categories and locations. For a stimulus in either visual field, however, there was a strong and temporally specific difference in response in the two cerebral hemispheres. In the first part of the visual response (50-250 ms from stimulus onset), processing in each hemisphere was largely restricted to contralateral stimuli, with strong responses to such stimuli, and selectivity for both object and category. Later (300-500 ms), responses to ipsilateral stimuli also appeared, many cells now responding more strongly to ipsilateral than to contralateral stimuli, and many showing selectivity for category. Activity on error trials showed that late activity in both hemispheres reflected the animal's final decision. As information is processed towards a behavioural decision, its encoding spreads to encompass large, bilateral regions of prefrontal cortex.

Behavioral significance is commonly coded by prefrontal neurons. The significance of a stimulus can be fixed through experience; in complex behavior, however, significance commonly changes with short-term context. To compare these cases, we trained monkeys in 2 versions of visual target detection. In both tasks, animals monitored a series of pictures, making a go response (saccade) at the offset of a specified target picture. In one version, based on "consistent mapping" in human visual search, target and nontarget pictures were fixed throughout training. In the other, based on "varied mapping," a cue at trial onset defined a new target. Building up over the first 1 s following this cue, many cells coded short-term context (cue/target identity) for the current trial. Thereafter, the cell population showed similar coding of behavioral significance in the 2 tasks, with selective early response to targets, and later, sustained activity coding target or nontarget until response. This population similarity was seen despite quite different activity in the 2 tasks for many single cells. At the population level, the results suggest similar prefrontal coding of fixed and short-term behavioral significance.

Neurons in the lateral intraparietal area of the monkey (LIP) have visual receptive fields in retinotopic coordinates when studied in a fixation task. However, in the period immediately surrounding a saccade these receptive fields often shift, so that a briefly flashed stimulus outside the receptive field will drive the neurons if the eye movement will bring the spatial location of that vanished stimulus into the receptive field. This is equivalent to a transient shift of the retinal receptive field. The process enables the monkey brain to process a stimulus in a spatially accurate manner after a saccade, even though the stimulus appeared only before the saccade. We studied the time course of this receptive field shift by flashing a task-irrelevant stimulus for 100 ms before, during, or after a saccade. The stimulus could appear in receptive field as defined by the fixation before the saccade (the current receptive field) or the receptive field as defined by the fixation after the saccade (the future receptive field). We recorded the activity of 48 visually responsive neurons in LIP of three hemispheres of two rhesus monkeys. We studied 45 neurons in the current receptive field task, in which the saccade removed the stimulus from the receptive field. Of these neurons 29/45 (64%) showed a significant decrement of response when the stimulus appeared 250 ms or less before the saccade, as compared with their activity during fixation. The average response decrement was 38% for those cells showing a significant ( P < 0.05 by t-test) decrement. We studied 39 neurons in the future receptive field task, in which the saccade brought the spatial location of a recently vanished stimulus into the receptive field. Of these 32/39 (82%) had a significant response to stimuli flashed for 100 ms in the future receptive field, even 400 ms before the saccade. Neurons never responded to stimuli moved by the saccade from a point outside the receptive field to another point outside the receptive field. Neurons did not necessarily show any saccadic suppression for stimuli moved from one part of the receptive field to another by the saccade. Stimuli flashed

The brain cannot monitor or react towards the entire world at a giv- en time. Instead, using the process of attention, it selects objects in the world for further analysis. Neuronal activity in the monkey intraparietal area has the properties appropriate for a neuronal substrate of attention: instead of all objects being represented in the parietal cortex, only salient objects are. Such objects can be salient because of their physical properties (recently flashed ob- jects or moving objects) or because they can be made important to the animal by virtue of a task. Although lateral intraparietal area (LIP) neurons respond through the delay period of a memory-guided saccade, they also respond in an enhanced manner to distractors flashed during the delay period of a memory- guided saccade being generated to a position outside the receptive field. This activity parallels the monkey's psychophysical attentional process: attention is ordinarily pinned at the goal of a memory-guided saccade, but it shifts briefly to the locus of a task-irrelevant distractor flashed briefly during the delay pe- riod and then returns to the goal. Although neurons in LIP have been implicat- ed as being directly involved in the generation of saccadic eye movements, their activity does not predict where, when, or if a saccade will occur. The ensemble of activity in LIP, however, does accurately describe the locus of attention.

In our previous studies of hand manipulation task–related neurons, we found many neurons of the parietal association cortex which responded to the sight of three–dimensional (3D) objects. Most of the task–related neurons in the AIP area (the lateral bank of the anterior intraparietal sulcus) were visually responsive and half of them responded to objects for manipulation. Most of these neurons were selective for the 3D features of the objects. More recently, we have found binocular visual neurons in the lateral bank of the caudal intraparietal sulcus (c–IPS area) that preferentially respond to a luminous bar or plate at a particular orientation in space. We studied the responses of axis–orientation selective (AOS) neurons and surface–orientation selective (SOS) neurons in this area with stimuli presented on a 3D computer graphics display. The AOS neurons showed a stronger response to elongated stimuli and showed tuning to the orientation of the longitudinal axis. Many of them preferred a tilted stimulus in depth and appeared to be sensitive to orientation disparity and/or width disparity. The SOS neurons showed a stronger response to a flat than to an elongated stimulus and showed tuning to the 3D orientation of the surface. Their responses increased with the width or length of the stimulus. A considerable number of SOS neurons responded to a square in a random dot stereogram and were tuned to orientation in depth, suggesting their sensitivity to the gradient of disparity. We also found several SOS neurons that responded to a square with tilted or slanted contours, suggesting their sensitivity to orientation disparity and/or width disparity. Area c–IPS is likely to send visual signals of the 3D features of an object to area AIP for the visual guidance of hand actions.

When natural scenes are viewed, a multitude of objects that are stable in their environments are brought in and out of view by eye movements. The posterior parietal cortex is crucial for the analysis of space, visual attention and movement. Neurons in one of its subdivisions, the lateral intraparietal area (LIP), have visual responses to stimuli appearing abruptly at particular retinal locations (their receptive fields). We have tested the responses of LIP neurons to stimuli that entered their receptive field by saccades. Neurons had little or no response to stimuli brought into their receptive field by saccades, unless the stimuli were behaviourally significant. We established behavioural significance in two ways: either by making a stable stimulus task-relevant, or by taking advantage of the attentional attraction of an abruptly appearing stimulus. Our results show that under ordinary circumstances the entire visual world is only weakly represented in LIP. The visual representation in LIP is sparse, with only the most salient or behaviourally relevant objects being strongly represented.

Recent neurophysiological studies in alert monkeys have revealed that the parietal association cortex plays a crucial role in depth perception and visually guided hand movement. The following five classes of parietal neurons covering various aspects of these functions have been identified: (1) depth-selective visual-fixation (VF) neurons of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL), representing egocentric distance; (2) depth-movement sensitive (DMS) neurons of V5A and the ventral intraparietal (VIP) area representing direction of linear movement in 3-D space; (3) depth-rotation-sensitive (RS) neurons of V5A and the posterior parietal (PP) area representing direction of rotary movement in space; (4) visually responsive manipulation-related neurons (visual-dominant or visual-and-motor type) of the anterior intraparietal (AIP) area, representing 3-D shape or orientation (or both) of objects for manipulation; and (5) axis-orientation-selective (AOS) and surface-orientation-selective (SOS) neurons in the caudal intraparietal sulcus (cIPS) sensitive to binocular disparity and representing the 3-D orientation of the longitudinal axes and flat surfaces, respectively. Some AOS and SOS neurons are selective in both orientation and shape. Thus the dorsal visual pathway is divided into at least two subsystems, V5A, PP and VIP areas for motion vision and V6, LIP and cIPS areas for coding position and 3-D features. The cIPS sends the signals of 3-D features of objects to the AIP area, which is reciprocally connected to the ventral premotor (F5) area and plays an essential role in matching hand orientation and shaping with 3-D objects for manipulation.

We studied the functional properties of rotation-sensitive (RS) neurons of the posterior parietal association cortex in detail. We classified 58 neurons as RS neurons on the basis of statistical analysis, to indicate that their responses to rotary movement were significantly greater (P

The frontal lobes play a key role in sequential organization of behavior. Little is known, however, of the way frontal neurons code successive phases of a structured task plan. Using correlational analysis, we asked how a population of frontal cells represents the multiple events of a complex sequential task. Monkeys performed a conventional cue–target association task, with distinct cue, delay, and target phases. Across the population of recorded cells, we examined patterns of activity for different task phases, and in the same phase, for different stimulus objects. The results show hierarchical representation of task events. For different task phases, there were different, approximately orthogonal patterns of activity across the population of neurons. Modulations of each basic pattern encoded stimulus information within each phase. By orthogonal coding, the frontal lobe may control transitions between the discrete steps of a mental program; by correlated coding within each step, similar operations may be applied to different stimulus content.

Humans and monkeys mislocalize targets flashed around the time of a saccade. Here, we present data from three monkeys on a double-step task with a 100ms target duration. All three subjects mislocalized targets that were flashed around the time of the first saccade, in spite of long intersaccadic intervals. The error was consistently in the direction opposite that of the saccade, and occurred in some cases when the target presentation was entirely presaccadic. This is inconsistent with a theory invoking a damped representation of eye position, but it is consistent with the hypothesis that it is due to an error in peri-saccadic remapping.

When objects are viewed in different illuminants, their color does not change or changes little in spite of significant changes in the wavelength composition of the light reflected from them. In previous studies, we have addressed the physiology underlying this color constancy by recording from cells in areas V1, V2, and V4 of the anesthetized monkey. Truly color-coded cells, ones that respond to a patch of a given color irrespective of the wavelength composition of the light reflected from it, were only found in area V4. In the present study, we have used a different approach to test the responses of V4 cells in both anesthetized and awake behaving monkeys. Stimuli of different colors, embedded within a Mondrian-type multicolored background, were used to identify the chromatic selectivity of neurons. The illumination of the background was then varied, and the tuning of V4 neurons was tested again for each background illumination. With anesthetized monkeys, the psychophysical effect of changing background illumination was inferred from our own experience, whereas in the awake behaving animal, it was directly reported by the monkey. We found that the majority of V4 neurons shifted their color-tuning profile with each change in the background illumination: each time the color of the background on the computer screen was changed so as to simulate a change in illumination, cells shifted their color-tuning function in the direction of the chromaticity component that had been increased. A similar shift was also observed in colored match-to-sample psychometric functions of both human and monkey. The shift in monkey psychometric functions was quantitatively equivalent to the shift in the responses of the corresponding population of cells. We conclude that neurons in area V4 exhibit the property of color constancy and that their response properties are thus able to reflect color perception.

The posterior parietal cortex is included in the dorsal cortical visual pathway underlying the three-dimensional (3-D) visual recognition of space and objects. The neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) respond visually to the three-dimensional objects, whereas those in the anterior intraparietal area (AIP) respond to hand movements to grasp them. LIP receives visual inputs from V3A, whereas AIP projects to the premotor areas; however, it is not known whether the neurons in LIP project to AIP. We herein investigated the connectional substrates that underlie the transformation of three-dimensional vision to prehensile hand movements in the Japanese monkey ( Macaca fuscata ). After identifying the three-dimensional visually responsive region in the posterior part of LIP by the unit recordings, we injected a bidirectional tracer, wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase, into one of the recording sites. We found that LIP receives neuronal projections from V3A and sends axons to AIP. To confirm our findings, we injected several orthograde tracers into V3A and retrograde tracers into AIP in the same hemispheres. We found that the V3A neurons projecting to LIP terminate in the vicinity of the LIP neurons projecting to AIP. The results suggest that the cortical connections of V3A–LIP–AIP in the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus play an important role in the visuomotor transformation for prehensile hand movements.

Purpose: To specify the cues for the discrimination of orientation in depth in axis orientation selective (AOS) neurons. Method: We analyzed the responses of AOS neurons in the monkey caudal intraparietal sulcus (cIPS) region using binocular disparity stimuli generated by stereoscopic 3 D computer graphics. Result: Most AOS neurons (20/27) were sensitive to binocular disparity and showed tuning to the orientation of a slit in the sagittal plane with orientation disparity cues. For 12 neurons we also used an array of discs or dots instead of slits to eliminate orientation disparity. Half of the neurons (6/12) responded better to the slits than to the discs or dots, suggesting that they were sensitive to orientation disparity. Five neurons (5/12) responded equally well to the discs or dots suggesting that they were more sensitive to the gradient of horizontal disparity than to the orientation disparity. Conclusion: Both orientation disparity and disparity gradient were likely to be integrated in the cIPS area to represent axis orientation of an object in space.

Neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) of the monkey represent salient stimuli. They respond to recently flashed stimuli that enter their receptive fields by virtue of saccades better than they respond to stable, behaviorally irrelevant stimuli brought into their receptive fields by saccades. They respond transiently to abrupt motion onsets, but have no directional selectivity. They respond to stable stimuli that are the targets for saccadic eye movements, but far less before the same saccades without stimuli. LIP is important in the attentional mechanisms preceding the choice of saccade target rather than in the intention to generate the saccade itself.

In the first part of this article, we review our neurophysiological studies of the hand-manipulation-related neurons in the anterior part of the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus (area AIP). We describe the properties of visually responsive neurons in area AIP. Object-type visual-dominant neurons responded to the sight of objects and showed selectivity not only for simple geometrical shapes, but also for complex objects such as a knob-in-groove and a plate-in-groove. Some of the object-type visual-dominant neurons showed selectivity for the orientation of the longitudinal axis or the plane (surface) of a plate or a ring. In the second part of this article, we review our study of binocular visual neurons in the caudal part of the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus (c-IPS area), in particular, of axis-orientation-selective (AOS) neurons and surface-orientation-selective (SOS) neurons. AOS neurons preferred long and thin stimuli, were sensitive to binocular disparity, and tuned to the axis orientation in three-dimensional (3D) space. SOS neurons preferred broad and flat stimuli and were tuned to the surface orientation in depth. Some SOS neurons responded to a square in a random dot stereogram (RDS) with orientation tuning, suggesting that they encode surface orientation from a disparity gradient. Others responded to solid figure stereograms with orientation disparity and/or width disparity. It was concluded that the c-IPS area is a higher center for stereopsis, which integrates various binocular disparity signals received from the V3 complex and other prestriate areas to represent the neural code for 3D features. It may send projections to the AIP area and contribute to visual adjustment of the shape of the handgrip and/or hand orientation for manipulation and grasping. Neurons of the AIP area may also receive monocular cues of depth from the ventral visual pathway to discriminate the 3D shape of the object of manipulation.

The parietal cortex has long been thought to participate in the neural mechanisms underlying visual attention, spatial perception, and eye movements (Critchley 1953). This review will begin by describing the attentional and spatial aspects of saccadic performance in a patient with a frontoparietal deficit, and then show how single neuron activity in one particular area, the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) renders the clinical deficits understandable in neurophysiological terms.

In connection with indications of the magnetic field detection in migratory birds, the measurements of magnetic remanences were carried out in both the migratory birds (Rustig Bunting and Reed Bunting) and the non-migratory birds (Siberian Meadow Bunting and Tree Sparrow) by means of SQUID magnetometer. Regardless of whether the species was migratory or not, neither heads nor neck musculatures indicated any presence of intrinsic magnetic materials related to the sensory mechanisms. The natural remanence and the induced remanence were of the orders of 10-8-10-7 e. m. u. and of 10-7-10-6 e. m. u. respectively. The magnetic sensor of birds for a compass reception is discussed.

In order to describe precisely the fixed action patterns of salmon sexual behavior, we recorded the electromyographic (EMG) activities of trunk and jaw muscles from freely behaving male and female Hime salmon (landlocked sockeye salmon,Oncorhynchus nerka). A series of action patterns (quivering and spawning act in males, digging, covering, prespawning act and spawning act in females, and the swimming and turning movements in both sexes) were characterized by rhythmic activities of the trunk muscles. Each of these activity patterns is quantitatively distinct from the others in such parameters as frequency, bout duration, duty value, intersegmental phase delay, and spatial distribution of rhythmic activities. However, all of these rhythms share a qualitatively homologous pattern with the forward swimming movement: rhythmic activities alternate on both sides of the body (bilateral coupling) and are posteriorly propagated (intersegmental coupling). In addition, a 3∶1 intersegmental phase coupling occurs in the most anterior trunk muscles during the spawning act in some males. Based on these observations, we discussed the biomechanics for these motor patterns (oviposition, ejaculation, body vibration, and mouth opening), and the neural mechanisms for the pattern generation. A possibility was pointed out that the locomotor pattern generator in the spinal cord may be modulated by descending supraspinal signals and recruited to generate such diverse forms of action patterns in sexual behavior.

Various patterns of sexual behavior were evoked in freely swimming hime salmon by electrical stimulation of specific loci in the telencephalon and the preoptic area (POA) using chronically implanted electrodes. Furthermore, co-ordinated sexual behavior corresponding to stages of the natural spawning sequence was elicited from some of these brain regions. These results suggest that (1) sexual behavior is integrated in specific parts of the telencephalon and POA, and (2) within these regions there is a hierarchy of neural systems which mediate progressively more complete components of normal sexual behavior.

A Thermally Stimulated Current in paraelectric barium-strontium titanate ceramics doped with iron up to 1% was studied in the range above the room temperature. Two TSC peaks, A and B, was observed: The peak A lied around at 90°C, the activation energy being 0.68 eV, whereas the peak B was found around at 130°C with the activation energy of 0.97 eV and regarded as due to migration of oxygen vacancies. These results suggest that the asymmetric hysteresis property in iron-doped ferroelectric ceramics may be brought about from the same charges.
