This paper describes a new visible portion estimation method of moving target object for networked wearable augmented reality (AR) system. In annotation overlay applications using AR systems, it is important to improve readability and intelligibility of annotations in a user's view. View management makes it possible to appropriately generate annotation overlay images for users so as to intuitively understand annotations. For instance, overlappings of annotations and other objects can be prevented by using a view management technique. View management requires visible portions of 3D target objects in a 2D view plane. This paper proposes a visible portion estimation method for moving target objects based on positions and shapes of the moving target objects. The wearable augmented reality system obtains positions of target objects via wireless network for estimating visible portions of target objects in the user's view. This paper describes a database of annotation information for augmented reality (AR) on wearable computers. With the advance of computers, AR systems using wearable computers have received a great deal of attention. To overlay annotations on the real scene image, a user’s computer needs to hold annotation information. The purpose of this paper is to construct a networked database system of annotation information for wearable AR systems. The proposed system provides users with annotation information from a server via a wireless network so that the wearable computers do not need to hold it in advance and information providers can easily update and add the database with a web browser. In order to recognize the visible portions of objects in the user's view, the positions, orientations, and shapes of the objects should be known in the case of conventional view management methods. However, it is difficult for a wearable AR system to obtain the positions, orientations and shapes of objects because the target object is usually moving or non-rigid. In this paper, we propose a view management method to overlay annotations of moving or non-rigid objects for networked wearable AR. The proposed method obtains positions and shapes of target objects via a network in order to estimate the visible portions of the target objects in the user's view. Annotations are located by minimizing penalties related to the overlap of an annotation, occlusion of target objects, length of a line between the annotation and the target object, and distance of the annotation in sequential frames. With the advance of computers, AR systems using wearable computers have received a great deal of attention as a new method for displaying location-based information in real-time. To overlay annotations on the real scene image, a user's computer needs to hold annotation information. Up to this time, since a database of annotation information is usually held in advance in the wearable computer, it is difficult for the database of annotation information to be effectively updated or added by providers of information. The purpose of this paper is to construct a networked database system of annotation information for wearable AR systems. The proposed system provides users with annotation information from a server via a wireless network so that the wearable computers do not need to hold it in advance and information providers can easily update and add the database with a web browser. In this study, we have developed a shared database of annotation information and have proven the feasibility of the prototype system with preliminary experiments. In experiments, the orientation and the position of user's viewpoint are measured by integrating several kinds of sensors. The user's position-based annotations have been proven to be shown to the user automatically.
