We consider a matching problem in a bipartite graph $G$ where every vertex has a capacity and a strict preference order on its neighbors. Furthermore, there is a cost function on the edge set. We assume $G$ admits a perfect matching, i.e., one that fully matches all vertices. It is only perfect matchings that are feasible for us and we are interested in those perfect matchings that are popular within the set of perfect matchings. It is known that such matchings (called popular perfect matchings) always exist and can be efficiently computed. What we seek here is not any popular perfect matching, but a min-cost one. We show a polynomial-time algorithm for finding such a matching; this is via a characterization of popular perfect matchings in $G$ in terms of stable matchings in a colorful auxiliary instance. This is a generalization of such a characterization that was known in the one-to-one setting.

We consider composition orderings for linear functions of one variable. Given $n$ linear functions $f_1,\dots,f_n$ and a constant $c$, the objective is to find a permutation $\sigma$ that minimizes/maximizes $f_{\sigma(n)}\circ\dots\circ f_{\sigma(1)}(c)$. It was first studied in the area of time-dependent scheduling, and known to be solvable in $O(n\log n)$ time if all functions are nondecreasing. In this paper, we present a complete characterization of optimal composition orderings for this case, by regarding linear functions as two-dimensional vectors. We also show several interesting properties on optimal composition orderings such as the equivalence between local and global optimality. Furthermore, by using the characterization above, we provide a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for the composition ordering problem for general linear functions, with respect to the number of decreasing linear functions. We next deal with matrix multiplication orderings as a generalization of composition of linear functions. Given $n$ matrices $M_1,\dots,M_n\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times m}$ and two vectors $w,y\in\mathbb{R}^m$, where $m$ denotes a positive integer, the objective is to find a permutation $\sigma$ that minimizes/maximizes $w^\top M_{\sigma(n)}\dots M_{\sigma(1)} y$. The problem is also viewed as a generalization of flow shop scheduling through a limit. By this extension, we show that the multiplication ordering problem for $2\times 2$ matrices is solvable in $O(n\log n)$ time if all the matrices are simultaneously triangularizable and have nonnegative determinants, and FPT with respect to the number of matrices with negative determinants, if all the matrices are simultaneously triangularizable. As the negative side, we finally prove that three possible natural generalizations are NP-hard: 1) when $m=2$, 2) when $m\geq 3$, and 3) the target version of the problem., Comment: 38 pages

Characterizing the solution sets in a problem by closedness under operations is recognized as one of the key aspects of algorithm development, especially in constraint satisfaction. An example from the Boolean satisfiability problem is that the solution set of a Horn conjunctive normal form (CNF) is closed under the minimum operation, and this property implies that minimizing a nonnegative linear function over a Horn CNF can be done in polynomial time. In this paper, we focus on the set of integer points (vectors) in a polyhedron, and study the relation between these sets and closedness under operations from the viewpoint of 2-decomposability. By adding further conditions to the 2-decomposable polyhedra, we show that important classes of sets of integer vectors in polyhedra are characterized by 2-decomposability and closedness under certain operations, and in some classes, by closedness under operations alone. The most prominent result we show is that the set of integer vectors in a unit-two-variable-per-inequality polyhedron can be characterized by closedness under the median and directed discrete midpoint operations, each of these operations was independently considered in constraint satisfaction and discrete convex analysis., Comment: 22 pages

We study remoteness function $\mathcal R$ of impartial games introduced by Smith in 1966. The player who moves from a position $x$ can win if and only if $\mathcal R(x)$ is odd. The odd values of $\mathcal R(x)$ show how soon the winner can win, while even values show how long the loser can resist, provided both players play optimally. This function can be applied to the conjunctive compounds of impartial games, in the same way as the Sprague-Grundy function is applicable to their disjunctive compounds. We provide polynomial algorithms computing $\mathcal R(x)$ for games Euclid and generalized Wythoff. For Moore's NIM we give a simple explicit formula for $\mathcal R(x)$ if it is even and show that computing it becomes an NP-hard problem for the odd values., Comment: 22 pages

Our input is a directed, rooted graph $G = (V \cup \{r\},E)$ where each vertex in $V$ has a partial order preference over its incoming edges. The preferences of a vertex extend naturally to preferences over arborescences rooted at $r$. We seek a popular arborescence in $G$, i.e., one for which there is no "more popular" arborescence. Popular arborescences have applications in liquid democracy or collective decision making; however, they need not exist in every input instance. The popular arborescence problem is to decide if a given input instance admits a popular arborescence or not. We show a polynomial-time algorithm for this problem, whose computational complexity was not known previously. Our algorithm is combinatorial, and can be regarded as a primal-dual algorithm. It searches for an arborescence along with its dual certificate, a chain of subsets of $E$, witnessing its popularity. In fact, our algorithm solves the more general popular common base problem in the intersection of two matroids, where one matroid is the partition matroid defined by any partition $E = \bigcup_{v\in V} \delta(v)$ and the other is an arbitrary matroid on $E$ of rank $|V|$, with each $v \in V$ having a partial order over elements in $\delta(v)$. We extend our algorithm to the case with forced or forbidden edges. We also study the related popular colorful forest (or more generally, the popular common independent set) problem where edges are partitioned into color classes, and the task is to find a colorful forest that is popular within the set of all colorful forests. For the case with weak rankings, we formulate the popular colorful forest polytope, and thus show that a minimum-cost popular colorful forest can be computed efficiently. We study the fair division of indivisible items with subsidies among $n$ agents, where the absolute marginal valuation of each item is at most one. Under monotone valuations (where each item is a good), Brustle et al. (2020) demonstrated that a maximum subsidy of $2(n-1)$ and a total subsidy of $2(n-1)^2$ are sufficient to guarantee the existence of an envy-freeable allocation. In this paper, we improve upon these bounds, even in a wider model. Namely, we show that, given an EF1 allocation, we can compute in polynomial time an envy-free allocation with a subsidy of at most $n-1$ per agent and a total subsidy of at most $n(n-1)/2$. Linear programming (LP) problems with gainfree Leontief substitution systems have been intensively studied in economics and operations research, and include the feasibility problem of a class of Horn systems, which arises in, e.g., polyhedral combinatorics and logic. This subclass of LP problems admits a strongly polynomial time algorithm, where devising such an algorithm for general LP problems is one of the major theoretical open questions in mathematical optimization and computer science. Recently, much attention has been paid to devising certifying algorithms in software engineering, since those algorithms enable one to confirm the correctness of outputs of programs with simple computations. In this paper, we provide the first combinatorial (and strongly polynomial time) certifying algorithm for LP problems with gainfree Leontief substitution systems. As a by-product, we answer affirmatively an open question whether the feasibility problem of the class of Horn systems admits a combinatorial certifying algorithm.

Hypergraph Horn functions were introduced as a subclass of Horn functions that can be represented by a collection of circular implication rules. These functions possess distinguished structural and computational properties. In particular, their characterizations in terms of implicate-duality and the closure operator provide extensions of matroid duality and the Mac Lane-Steinitz exchange property of matroid closure, respectively. In the present paper, we introduce a subclass of hypergraph Horn functions that we call matroid Horn functions. We provide multiple characterizations of matroid Horn functions in terms of their canonical and complete CNF representations. We also study the Boolean minimization problem for this class, where the goal is to find a minimum size representation of a matroid Horn function given by a CNF representation. While there are various ways to measure the size of a CNF, we focus on the number of circuits and circuit clauses. We determine the size of an optimal representation for binary matroids, and give lower and upper bounds in the uniform case. Horn functions form a subclass of Boolean functions possessing interesting structural and computational properties. These functions play a fundamental role in algebra, artificial intelligence, combinatorics, computer science, database theory, and logic. In the present paper, we introduce the subclass of hypergraph Horn functions that generalizes matroids and equivalence relations. We provide multiple characterizations of hypergraph Horn functions in terms of implicate-duality and the closure operator, which are respectively regarded as generalizations of matroid duality and Mac Lane-Steinitz exchange property of matroid closure. We also study algorithmic issues on hypergraph Horn functions, and show that the recognition problem (i.e., deciding if a given definite Horn CNF represents a hypergraph Horn function) and key realization (i.e., deciding if a given hypergraph is realized as a key set by a hypergraph Horn function) can be done in polynomial time, while implicate sets can be generated with polynomial delay., Comment: 19 pages

To mitigate the imbalance in the number of assignees in the Hospitals/Residents problem, Goko et al. [Goko et al., Maximally Satisfying Lower Quotas in the Hospitals/Residents Problem with Ties, Proc. STACS 2022, pp. 31:1--31:20] studied the Hospitals/Residents problem with lower quotas whose goal is to find a stable matching that satisfies lower quotas as much as possible. In their paper, preference lists are assumed to be complete, that is, the preference list of each resident (resp., hospital) is assumed to contain all the hospitals (resp., residents). In this paper, we study a more general model where preference lists may be incomplete. Reallocation scheduling is one of the most fundamental problems in various areas such as supply chain management, logistics, and transportation science. In this paper, we introduce the reallocation problem that models the scheduling in which products are with fixed cost, non-fungible, and reallocated in parallel, and comprehensively study the complexity of the problem under various settings of the transition time, product size, and capacities. We show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time for a fundamental setting where the product size and transition time are both uniform. We also show that the feasibility of the problem is NP-complete even for little more general settings, which implies that no polynomial-time algorithm constructs a feasible schedule of the problem unless P$=$NP. We then consider the relaxation of the problem, which we call the capacity augmentation, and derive a reallocation schedule feasible with the augmentation such that the completion time is at most the optimal of the original problem. When the warehouse capacity is sufficiently large, we design constant-factor approximation algorithms under all the settings. Motivated by the serious problem that hospitals in rural areas suffer from a shortage of residents, we study the Hospitals/Residents model in which hospitals are associated with lower quotas and the objective is to satisfy them as much as possible. When preference lists are strict, the number of residents assigned to each hospital is the same in any stable matching because of the well-known rural hospitals theorem; thus there is no room for algorithmic interventions. However, when ties are introduced to preference lists, this will no longer apply because the number of residents may vary over stable matchings. In this paper, we formulate an optimization problem to find a stable matching with the maximum total satisfaction ratio for lower quotas. We first investigate how the total satisfaction ratio varies over choices of stable matchings in four natural scenarios and provide the exact values of these maximum gaps. Subsequently, we propose a strategy-proof approximation algorithm for our problem; in one scenario it solves the problem optimally, and in the other three scenarios, which are NP-hard, it yields a better approximation factor than that of a naive tie-breaking method. Finally, we show inapproximability results for the above-mentioned three NP-hard scenarios.

The notion of \emph{envy-freeness} is a natural and intuitive fairness requirement in resource allocation. With indivisible goods, such fair allocations are unfortunately not guaranteed to exist. Classical works have avoided this issue by introducing an additional divisible resource, i.e., money, to subsidize envious agents. In this paper, we aim to design a truthful allocation mechanism of indivisible goods to achieve both fairness and efficiency criteria with a limited amount of subsidy. Following the work of Halpern and Shah, our central question is as follows: to what extent do we need to rely on the power of money to accomplish these objectives? For general valuations, the impossibility theorem of combinatorial auction translates to our setting: even if an arbitrarily large amount of money is available for use, no mechanism can achieve truthfulness, envy-freeness, and utilitarian optimality simultaneously when agents have general monotone submodular valuations. By contrast, we show that, when agents have matroidal valuations, there is a truthful allocation mechanism that achieves envy-freeness and utilitarian optimality by subsidizing each agent with at most $1$, the maximum marginal contribution of each item for each agent. The design of the mechanism rests crucially on the underlying matroidal M-convexity of the Lorenz dominating allocations.

In this paper, we consider differential approximability of the traveling salesman problem (TSP). We show that TSP is $3/4$-differential approximable, which improves the currently best known bound $3/4 -O(1/n)$ due to Escoffier and Monnot in 2008, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices in the given graph.

Each voter $i \in I$ has $\alpha_i$ cards that (s)he distributes among the candidates $a \in A$ as a measure of approval. One (or several) candidate(s) who received the maximum number of cards is (are) elected. We provide polynomial algorithms to recognize voting forms and voting correspondences generated by such voting schemes in cases when either the number of candidates or the number of voters is equal to $2$. The airport game is a classical and well-known model of fair cost-sharing for a single facility among multiple agents. This paper extends it to the so-called assignment setting, that is, for multiple facilities and agents, each agent chooses a facility to use and shares the cost with the other agents. Such a situation can be often seen in sharing economy, such as sharing fees for office desks among workers, taxis among customers of possibly different destinations on a line, and so on. Our model is regarded as a coalition formation game based on the fair cost-sharing of the airport game; we call our model \emph{a fair ride allocation on a line}. As criteria of solution concepts, we incorporate Nash stability and envy-freeness into our setting. We show that a Nash-stable feasible allocation that minimizes the social cost of agents can be computed efficiently if a feasible allocation exists. For envy-freeness, we provide several structural properties of envy-free allocations. Based on these, we design efficient algorithms for finding an envy-free allocation when at least one of (1) the number of facilities, (2) the capacity of facilities, and (3) the number of agent types, is small. Moreover, we show that a consecutive envy-free allocation can be computed in polynomial time. On the negative front, we show the NP-hardness of determining the existence of an allocation under two relaxed envy-free concepts.

In fair division problems, we are given a set $S$ of $m$ items and a set $N$ of $n$ agents with individual preferences, and the goal is to find an allocation of items among agents so that each agent finds the allocation fair. There are several established fairness concepts and envy-freeness is one of the most extensively studied ones. However envy-free allocations do not always exist when items are indivisible and this has motivated relaxations of envy-freeness: envy-freeness up to one item (EF1) and envy-freeness up to any item (EFX) are two well-studied relaxations. We consider the problem of finding EF1 and EFX allocations for utility functions that are not necessarily monotone, and propose four possible extensions of different strength to this setting. In particular, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for finding an EF1 allocation for two agents with arbitrary utility functions. An example is given showing that EFX allocations need not exist for two agents with non-monotone, non-additive, identical utility functions. However, when all agents have monotone (not necessarily additive) identical utility functions, we prove that an EFX allocation of chores always exists. As a step toward understanding the general case, we discuss two subclasses of utility functions: Boolean utilities that are $\{0,+1\}$-valued functions, and negative Boolean utilities that are $\{0,-1\}$-valued functions. Given a relational database, a key is a set of attributes such that a value assignment to this set uniquely determines the values of all other attributes. The database uniquely defines a pure Horn function $h$, representing the functional dependencies. If the knowledge of the attribute values in set $A$ determines the value for attribute $v$, then $A\rightarrow v$ is an implicate of $h$. If $K$ is a key of the database, then $K\rightarrow v$ is an implicate of $h$ for all attributes $v$. Keys of small sizes play a crucial role in various problems. We present structural and complexity results on the set of minimal keys of pure Horn functions. We characterize Sperner hypergraphs for which there is a unique pure Horn function with the given hypergraph as the set of minimal keys. Furthermore, we show that recognizing such hypergraphs is co-NP-complete already when every hyperedge has size two. On the positive side, we identify several classes of graphs for which the recognition problem can be decided in polynomial time. We also present an algorithm that generates the minimal keys of a pure Horn function with polynomial delay. By establishing a connection between keys and target sets, our approach can be used to generate all minimal target sets with polynomial delay when the thresholds are bounded by a constant. Given a CNF formula $\Phi$ with clauses $C_1,\ldots,C_m$ and variables $V=\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$, a truth assignment $a:V\rightarrow\{0,1\}$ of $\Phi$ leads to a clause sequence $\sigma_\Phi(a)=(C_1(a),\ldots,C_m(a))\in\{0,1\}^m$ where $C_i(a) = 1$ if clause $C_i$ evaluates to $1$ under assignment $a$, otherwise $C_i(a) = 0$. The set of all possible clause sequences carries a lot of information on the formula, e.g. SAT, MAX-SAT and MIN-SAT can be encoded in terms of finding a clause sequence with extremal properties. We consider a problem posed at Dagstuhl Seminar 19211 "Enumeration in Data Management" (2019) about the generation of all possible clause sequences of a given CNF with bounded dimension. We prove that the problem can be solved in incremental polynomial time. We further give an algorithm with polynomial delay for the class of tractable CNF formulas. We also consider the generation of maximal and minimal clause sequences, and show that generating maximal clause sequences is NP-hard, while minimal clause sequences can be generated with polynomial delay., Comment: 9 pages

In this paper, we introduce online knapsack problems with a resource buffer. In the problems, we are given a knapsack with capacity $1$, a buffer with capacity $R\ge 1$, and items that arrive one by one. Each arriving item has to be taken into the buffer or discarded on its arrival irrevocably. When every item has arrived, we transfer a subset of items in the current buffer into the knapsack. Our goal is to maximize the total value of the items in the knapsack. We consider four variants depending on whether items in the buffer are removable (i.e., we can remove items in the buffer) or non-removable, and proportional (i.e., the value of each item is proportional to its size) or general. For the general&non-removable case, we observe that no constant competitive algorithm exists for any $R\ge 1$. For the proportional&non-removable case, we show that a simple greedy algorithm is optimal for every $R\ge 1$. 'Tree-based' phylogenetic networks proposed by Francis and Steel have attracted much attention of theoretical biologists in the last few years. At the heart of the definitions of tree-based phylogenetic networks is the notion of 'support trees', about which there are numerous algorithmic problems that are important for evolutionary data analysis. Recently, Hayamizu (arXiv:1811.05849 [math.CO]) proved a structure theorem for tree-based phylogenetic networks and obtained linear-time and linear-delay algorithms for many basic problems on support trees, such as counting, optimisation, and enumeration. In the present paper, we consider the following fundamental problem in statistical data analysis: given a tree-based phylogenetic network $N$ whose arcs are associated with probability, create the top-$k$ support tree ranking for $N$ by their likelihood values. We provide a linear-delay (and hence optimal) algorithm for the problem and thus reveal the interesting property of tree-based phylogenetic networks that ranking top-$k$ support trees is as computationally easy as picking $k$ arbitrary support trees., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

The classical game of {\sc Nim} can be naturally extended and played on an arbitrary hypergraph $\cH \subseteq 2^V \setminus \{\emptyset\}$ whose vertices $V = \{1, \ldots, n\}$ correspond to piles of stones. By one move a player chooses an edge $H$ of $\cH$ and reduces arbitrarily all piles $i \in H$. In 1901 Bouton solved the classical {\sc Nim} for which $\cH = \{\{1\}, \ldots, \{n\}\}$. In 1910 Moore introduced and solved a more general game $k$-{\sc Nim}, for which $\cH = \{H \subseteq V \mid |H| \leq k\}$, where $1 \leq k < n$. In 1980 Jenkyns and Mayberry obtained an explicit formula for the Sprague-Grundy function of Moore's {\sc Nim} for the case $k+1 = n$. Recently it was shown that the same formula works for a large class of hypergraphs. In this paper we study combinatorial properties of these hypergraphs and obtain explicit formulas for the Sprague-Grundy functions of the conjunctive and selective compounds of the corresponding hypergraph {\sc Nim} games., Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure

Horn functions form a subclass of Boolean functions and appear in many different areas of computer science and mathematics as a general tool to describe implications and dependencies. Finding minimum sized representations for such functions with respect to most commonly used measures is a computationally hard problem that remains hard even for the important subclass of key Horn functions. Packing and covering semidefinite programs (SDPs) appear in natural relaxations of many combinatorial optimization problems as well as a number of other applications. Recently, several techniques were proposed, that utilize the particular structure of this class of problems, to obtain more efficient algorithms than those offered by general SDP solvers. For certain applications, such as those described in this paper, it may be desirable to obtain {\it sparse} dual solutions, i.e., those with support size (almost) independent of the number of primal constraints. In this paper, we give an algorithm that finds such solutions, which is an extension of a {\it logarithmic-potential} based algorithm of Grigoriadis, Khachiyan, Porkolab and Villavicencio (SIAM Journal of Optimization 41 (2001)) for packing/covering linear programs.

We consider a generalization of the classical game of $NIM$ called hypergraph $NIM$. Given a hypergraph $\cH$ on the ground set $V = \{1, \ldots, n\}$ of $n$ piles of stones, two players alternate in choosing a hyperedge $H \in \cH$ and strictly decreasing all piles $i\in H$. The player who makes the last move is the winner. In this paper we give an explicit formula that describes the Sprague-Grundy function of hypergraph $NIM$ for several classes of hypergraphs. In particular we characterize all $2$-uniform hypergraphs (that is graphs) and all matroids for which the formula works. We show that all self-dual matroids are included in this class.

In this paper we characterize symmetric hypergraphs for which the Sprague-Grundy function is described by the same formula.

This paper studies optimal matroid partitioning problems for various objective functions. In the problem, we are given a finite set $E$ and $k$ weighted matroids $(E, \mathcal{I}_i, w_i)$, $i = 1, \dots, k$, and our task is to find a minimum partition $(I_1,\dots,I_k)$ of $E$ such that $I_i \in \mathcal{I}_i$ for all $i$. For each objective function, we give a polynomial-time algorithm or prove NP-hardness. In particular, for the case when the given weighted matroids are identical and the objective function is the sum of the maximum weight in each set (i.e., $\sum_{i=1}^k\max_{e\in I_i}w_i(e)$), we show that the problem is strongly NP-hard but admits a PTAS., Comment: 16 pages

We give an incremental polynomial time algorithm for enumerating the vertices of any polyhedron $\mathcal{P}(A,\mathbf{1})=\{x\in\RR^n \mid Ax\geq \b1,~x\geq \b0\}$, when $A$ is a totally unimodular matrix. Our algorithm is based on decomposing the hypergraph transversal problem for unimodular hypergraphs using Seymour's decomposition of totally unimodular matrices, and may be of independent interest.

The Sprague-Grundy (SG) theory reduces the sum of impartial games to the classical game of $NIM$. We generalize the concept of sum and introduce $\cH$-combinations of impartial games for any hypergraph $\cH$. In particular, we introduce the game $NIM_\cH$ which is the $\cH$-combination of single pile $NIM$ games. An impartial game is called SG decreasing if its SG value is decreased by every move. Extending the SG theory, we reduce the $\cH$-combination of SG decreasing games to $NIM_\cH$. We call $\cH$ a Tetris hypergraph if $NIM_\cH$ is SG decreasing. We provide some necessary and some sufficient conditions for a hypergraph to be Tetris.

We consider two-person zero-sum stochastic mean payoff games with perfect information, or BWR-games, given by a digraph $G = (V, E)$, with local rewards $r: E \to \ZZ$, and three types of positions: black $V_B$, white $V_W$, and random $V_R$ forming a partition of $V$.
