We conducted a multi-frequency campaign for the TeV blazar Mrk~421 in 1998 April. The campaign started from a pronounced high amplitude flare recorded by SAX and Whipple; ASCA observation started three days later. In the X-ray data, we detected multiple flares, occuring on time scales of about one day. ASCA data clearly reveal spectral variability. The comparison of the data from ASCA, EUVE and RXTE indicates that the variability amplitudes in the low energy synchrotron component are larger at higher photon energies. In TeV Gamma-rays, large intra-day variations -- which were correlated with the X-ray flux -- were observed when results from three Cherenkov telescopes are combined. The RMS variability of TeV Gamma--rays was similar to that observed in hard X-rays, above 10 keV. The X-ray light curve reveals flares which are almost symmetric for most of cases, implying the dominant time scale is the light crossing time through the emitting region. The structure function analysis based on the continuous X-ray light curve of seven days indicates that the characteristic time scale is ~0.5 day. The analysis of ASCA light curves in various energy bands appears to show both soft (positive) and hard (negative) lags. These may not be real, as systematic effects could also produce these lags, which are all much smaller than an orbit. If the lags of both signs are real, these imply that the particle acceleration and X-ray cooling time scales are similar., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We report the variable X-ray emission from BL Lacertae detected in the ASCA ToO observation conducted during the EGRET and RXTE pointings, coincident with the 1997 July outburst. The source showed a historically high state of X-ray, optical, and gamma-ray emission, with its 2-10 keV flux peaking at ~3.3 E-11 erg/cm2/s. This is more than 3 times higher than the value measured by ASCA in 1995. We detected two rapid flares which occured only in the soft X-ray band, while the hard X-ray flux also increased, but decayed with a much longer time scale. Together with the requirement of a very steep and varying power law dominating the soft X-ray band in addition to the hard power law, we suggest that both the high energy end of the synchrotron spectrum and the hard inverse Compton spectrum were visible in this source during the outburst. We report the detection of changes in the long-term intensity variations in two X-ray binaries, Cyg X-2 and LMC X-3. In this work, we have used the long-term light curves obtained with the All-Sky Monitors (ASMs) of the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), Ginga, Ariel 5, and Vela 5B and the scanning modulation collimator of HEAO 1. It is found that in the light curves of both the sources, obtained with these instruments at various times over the last 30 years, more than one periodic or quasi-periodic component is always present. The multiple prominent peaks in the periodograms have frequencies unrelated to each other. In Cyg X-2, RXTE-ASM data show strong peaks at 40.4 and 68.8 days, and Ginga-ASM data show strong peaks at 53.7 and 61.3 days. Multiple peaks are also observed in LMC X-3. The various strong peaks in the periodograms of LMC X-3 appear at 104, 169, and 216 days (observed with RXTE-ASM) and 105, 214, and 328 days (observed with Ginga-ASM). The present results, when compared with the earlier observations of periodicities in these two systems, demonstrate the absence of any stable long period. The 78 day periodicity detected earlier in Cyg X-2 was probably due to the short time base in the RXTE data that were used, and the periodicity of 198 days in LMC X-3 was due to a relatively short duration of observation with HEAO 1., Comment: 11 pages, 7 postscript figures included

The TeV blazar PKS 2155-304 was monitored with the X-ray satellite ASCA in 1994 May, as part of a multiwavelength campaign from the radio to X-ray bands. At the beginning of the two-day continuous observation, we detected a large flare, where the 2-10 keV flux changed by a factor of 2 on a time scale of 3 x 10^4 sec. During the flare, the increase in the hard X-ray flux clearly preceded that observed in the soft X-rays, the spectral evolution tracking a `clockwise loop' in the flux versus photon index plane. Ascribing the energy-dependent variability to differential synchrotron cooling of relativistic electrons, we estimate the magnetic field B in the emission region. We tested two different methods of comparing the time series in various X-ray bands: (i) fitting the light curves to a Gaussian and searching for the time shift of the peak of the flare, and (ii) calculating the discrete correlation function. Both methods yielded a consistent solution of B ~ 0.1 G. We also found that the flare amplitude becomes larger as the photon energy increases, while the duration of the flare stays roughly constant through the ASCA energy band (0.7-7.5 keV). In the framework of the time dependent synchrotron self-Compton model in a homogeneous region, we consider a flare where the maximum Lorentz factor (Gmax) of the injected electrons increases uniformly throughout the emission volume. The temporal evolution of spectra as well as the light curves were reproduced with the physical parameters self-consistently determined from seven observables. We obtain B ~ 0.1-0.2 G and a region size R ~ 10^-2 pc, for relativistic beaming with a Doppler factor of D ~ 20-30. We present the results of a multiwavelength campaign for Mrk 501 performed in March 1996 with ASCA, EGRET, Whipple, and optical telescopes. In the X-ray band, a spectral break was observed around 2 keV. We report here for the first time the detection of high-energy gamma-ray flux from Mrk 501 with EGRET with 3.5 sigma significance (E>100 MeV). Higher flux was also observed in April/May 1996, with 4.0 sigma significance for E>100 MeV, and 5.2 sigma significance for E>500 MeV. The gamma-ray spectrum was measured to be flatter than most of the gamma-ray blazars. We find that the multiband spectrum in 1996 is consistent with that calculated from a one-zone SSC model in a homogeneous region. In the context of this model, we investigate the values of the magnetic field strength and the beaming factor allowed by the observational results. We compare the March 1996 multiwavelength spectrum with that in the flare state in April 1997. Between these two epochs, the TeV flux increase is well correlated with that observed in keV range. The keV and TeV amplitudes during the April 1997 flare are accurately reproduced, assuming that the population of synchrotron photons in 1996 are scattered by the newly injected relativistic electrons, having maximum energies of G_max = 6.0e6. However, the TeV spectrum observed during March 1996 campaign is flatter than predicted by our models. We find that this cannot be explained by either higher order Comptonization or the contribution of the `seed' IR photons from the host galaxy for the first-order external radiation Comptonization., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal, Vol.514 (March 20, 1999)

We present data for 18 blazars observed with ASCA, half of which were also observed contemporaneously with EGRET as parts of multi-wavelength campaigns. The observations show a clear difference in the spectra between three subclasses of blazars, namely the High-energy peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs), Low-energy peaked BL Lac objects (LBLs), and quasar-hosted blazars (QHBs). We find that the radiation process responsible for the HE peak for HBLs can be explained solely by Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) emission, with the Doppler factor consistent with the VLBI and/or gamma-ray variability data. For many QHBs, on the other hand, the gamma-rays cannot be solely due to the SSC mechanism unless the Doppler factor is significantly in excess of that inferred from VLBI data. We consider an alternative scenario consistent with the measured values of the Doppler factor, where the SSC component is still present in QHBs and it dominates in the X-ray band, but it is below the observed gamma-ray spectrum. With an assumption that the peak of the SSC emission is on the extrapolation of the X-ray spectrum, and adopting the Doppler factor of 10, we infer the magnetic field to be 0.1 - 1 Gauss, and Lorentz factors of electrons radiating at the peak of the nu F(nu) spectrum of 10^3 for QHBs; this is much lower than 10^5 for HBLs. In May 1994 the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 was observed continuously for ~10 d with IUE and EUVE and for 2 d with ASCA, as well as with ROSAT and with ground- based radio, IR, and optical telescopes. The light curves show a well-defined X-ray flare (x2 increase in 1/2 d, with similar decay) followed by a broader, lower amplitude EUV flare ~1 day later, and a broad, low-amplitude UV flare ~2 d later (amplitude ~35%, duration >2 d). In the preceding week there was at least one X-ray flare of comparable amplitude or perhaps ongoing stochastic X-ray variations. An extremely rapid change in UV flux was seen at the beginning of the IUE observation. Assuming the central X-ray, EUV, and UV events are associated, the lags, the decrease of amplitude with wavelength, and the broadening of the temporal profile with wavelength are all qualitatively as expected for synchrotron emission from an inhomogeneous relativistic jet. We can rule out a Fermi-type shock acceleration event or a pair cascade in a homogeneous synchrotron-emitting region. A homogeneous region is still possible if there was an instantaneous (t<

We present the results of a 4 day ASCA observation of the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15, focussing on the nature of the X-ray absorption by the warm absorber, characterizd by the K-edges of the intermediately ionized oxygen, OVII and OVIII. We confirm that the column density of OVIII changes on a timescale of $\sim 10^4$~s when the X-ray continuum flux decreases. The significant anti-correlation of column density with continuum flux gives direct evidence that the warm absorber is photoionized by the X-ray continuum. From the timescale of the variation of the OVIII column density, we estimate that it originates from gas within a radius of about $10^{17}\cm$ of the central engine. In contrast, the depth of the OVII edge shows no response to the continuum flux, which indicates that it originates in gas at larger radii. Our results strongly suggest that there are two warm absorbing regions; one located near or within the Broad Line Region, the other associated with the outer molecular torus, scattering medium or Narrow Line Region., Comment: 8 pages (including figures) uuencoded gziped PS file. The blazar 3C 279, one of the brightest identified extragalactic objects in the gamma-ray sky, underwent a large (factor of approx. 10 in amplitude) flare in gamma-rays toward the end of a 3 week pointing by Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), in 1996 January-February. The flare peak represents the highest gamma-ray intensity ever recorded for this object. During the high state, extremely rapid gamma-ray variability was seen, including an increase of a factor of 2.6 in approx. 8 hrs., which strengthens the case for relativistic beaming. Coordinated multifrequency observations were carried out with Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA; or, Astro-D), Roentgen Satellite (ROSAT), and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and from many ground-based observatories, covering most accessible wavelengths. The well-sampled, simultaneous RXTE light curve shows an outburst of lower amplitude (factor of approx. or equal to 3) well correlated with the gamma-ray flare without any lag larger than the temporal resolution of approx. 1 day. The optical-UV light curves, which are not well sampled during the high-energy flare, exhibit more modest variations (factor of approx. 2) and a lower degree of correlation. The flux at millimetric wavelengths was near a historical maximum during the gamma-ray flare peak, and there is a suggestion of a correlated decay. We present simultaneous spectral energy distributions of 3C 279 prior to and near to the flare peak. The gamma-rays vary by more than the square of the observed IR-optical flux change, which poses some problems for specific blazar emission models. The synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model would require that the largest synchrotron variability occurred in the mostly unobserved submillimeter/far-infrared region. Alternatively, a large variation in the external photon field could occur over a time scale of a few days. This occurs naturally in the "mirror" model wherein the flaring region in the jet photoionizes nearby broad emission line clouds, which, in turn, provide soft external photons that are Comptonized to gamma-ray energies.

Multiwavelength observation of blazars in conjuction with EGRET points have been obtained at several epochs. However, either the monitoring was to sparse or the source was not active during the campaign, so that detections of correlated mulitwavelentgh variabiltiy on short times scales are tentaive (3C 279, Maraschi et al. 1994; Hartman et al. 1996; OJ 287, Webb et al. 1996; PKS 0537-441, Pian et al. 1997).

The Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) observations of 3C 279, Mkn 421, PKS 2155-304, BL Lac 0716+714 and OJ 287 blazars are presented. Blazars are a class of active galactic nuclei characterized by high variability, high polarization, flat radio spectrum and featureless spectrum. The X-ray spectra and flux variations of blazars are discussed. The inverse correlation between X-ray flux and index, soft lag, the convex curvature of the spectrum, flat gamma-ray and/or X-ray spectra, fast variability and featureless spectrum are common characteristics of blazars.

The cataclysmic variable S193 was observed with the Ginga and ROSAT satellites, along with ground-based optical observations. The bremsstrahlung temperatures and the column densities derived from these two observations are noticeably different. However, since the observations were separated by 3 yr and took place at different optical magnitudes, it is not clear whether this is related to an intrinsic change in the system or to a two component source of X-rays. While the X-ray data are not sufficient to accomplish a detailed analysis for periodicities, the Ginga data place an upper limit of 40% on the amplitude of any sinusoidal modulation.

We analyze data from two eclipse ingresses of Her X-1 observed with Ginga on 1989 April 30 and May 19. These observations occur, respectively, during the MAIN HIGH and SHORT HIGH states in the 35 day modulation of Her X-1 intensity. We find significant residual X-ray flux during eclipse, with a gradual decrease in flux following the occultation of the neutron star by the atmosphere of HZ Her. During the central part of the eclipse the count rate becomes nearly constant, at 0.5 mcrab in the energy range 1.7-36.8 keV. From a spec- tral analysis of the residual emission during the total eclipse of the central source in the MAIN MGH state, we determine the energy spectral index, alpha = 0.8, similar to that before eclipse. A remarkable feature of the eclipse spectrum is that it does not show a significant iron line feature in contrast to massive wind-fed pulsars, such as Vela X-1 and Cen X-3. From a timing analysis of the same eclipse data, we show that there are no pulses. These results imply that the emission comes from the scattering of continuum X-rays by material in a region considerably larger than the companion star. An extended accretion disk corona may be responsible for this scattering. However, partial eclipse of an extended accretion disk corona is insufficient to account for the count rates in mid-eclipse, when known parameters of the binary system are used. Based on the present results, we suggest that scattering occurs not only in the accretion disk corona but also in the circumstellar matter surrounding the system of Her X-1/HZ Her.

We report on the results of new Ginga observations of the archetypal Seyfert galaxy, NGC 4151, performed over an 18-month period between early 1990 and mid-1991. The present program complements earlier extensive monitoring of this source in the medium-energy X-ray band by both EXOSAT and Ginga to give a combined data set of some 36 separate observations made over a period of 8 years. The new observations bring to light a remarkable transient change in the low-energy extinction and soft X-ray excess apparent in the X-ray spectrum of NGC 4151. The spectrum became systematically softer below about 4 keV from mid-1988, with the spectral softness peaking in mid-1990 and then reverting to its former state by late 1990. Interpreting this in terms of the partial covering model, the covered fraction of the source, which normally takes a value of 80-90 percent, underwent a sharp decline to about 20 percent over a 2-year period and then returned to the canonical level over the following six months. This observation favors the presence of a normally stable 'bulk' structure such as an edge-on accretion disk. A transitory change of azimuthal structure in the disk could then account for the apparent dip in the covered fraction. If the central X-ray source radiates isotropically then the medium producing the bulk of the iron-line emission must deviate from a spherically symmetric distribution.

We present a detailed study of the hard X-ray properties of the BL Lacertae object PKS 2155-304 based on measurements made in 1988 and 1989 with the Large Area Counter (LAC) on board the Ginga satellite. The source exhibited a high degree of variability with a dynamic range of a factor 7 in the 2-6 keV band. The fastest amplitude variation was a factor 2 decline in the intensity in this band within 4 hours. The spectrum is characterized by a break which occurs at about 4 keV. Spectral fits to the data integrated in 6400 s time bins reveal that, in common with previous observations of BL Lacertae objects, the spectral slope is generally anticorrelated with intensity in the sense that the spectrum hardens as the intensity increases. However, the tracks of sequential points in the index-intensity plane are occasionally seen to differ during the rise and decay stages of individual flares. Furthermore, during one, or possibly two, flaring episodes the spectral index is observed to correlate with intensity variations.

Contemporaneous X-ray (from the Ginga satellite) and ultraviolet (IUE) observations of NGC 5548 in 1989-1990 show that the 1350 A and 2-10 keV flux both varied by a factor of 2.6 in a highly correlated fashion. Adding an additional simultaneous IUE-Exosat observation from 1984 significantly weakens the correlation, since the UV flux was 3.5 times larger then than its average 1990 value, while the X-ray flux was only 70 percent higher. In 1990 the UV and X-ray flux variations appear to be simultaneous to within no more than six days. These results, together with the simultaneity of the variations at 5000 and 1350 A, are incompatible with the standard geometrically thin accretion model. They may be explained, however, if part of the UV and optical radiation originates from reprocessing of X-rays emitted above the disk. Thus essentially all the UV flux in 1990 would be due to reprocessing. But the large UV outburst in 1984 probably represents a genuine increase in the disk throughput due to instability in the disk itself. The similar relationship between UV and X-ray emission in NGC 4151 suggests that this scheme may be applicable to Seyfert galaxies as a class.

To optimize the activity of the RIASS collaboration was established between IUE and Rosat projects. Some of the results obtained are given and the importance of such coordinated observations for the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) definition of Active Galactic Nuclei is illustrated. All the participants in the AGN part of the RIASS program are listed. The RIASS observations allow for a comprehensive study of the overall spectral energy distribution of AGN's. For the first time, data from different instruments can be used to determine the SED, since the observations were simultaneous. A preliminary analysis shows that the energies radiated in the UV and the soft X-rays domains are closely related. The spectra of individual objects as well as the correlation found between the intensity of CIV lambda 1550 emission line and the soft X-rays luminosity, suggest that the excess detected in this band is the high energy tail of the big UV bump.
