1. Relationship between mental health and the quality of sleep during the first self-restraint in Japanese workers: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract

Objective A few surveys have indicated that behavioural restrictions during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic have affected sleep and mental health. This study examined (1) the change in sleep-wake habits before and during the first self-restraint in Japan, (2) the factors that affect mental health, and (3) the model of mental health affecting the sleep quality, of workers.Design A cross-sectional internet survey.Outcome Measures A total of 512 Japanese workers self-assessed their sleep quality, loneliness, anxiety, and depression during self-restraint. Their previous sleep habits were also assessed.Results Sleep habits remained almost regular, but 35.7% of participants reported poor sleep quality. Additionally, among the participants, 82.2% reported social loneliness, 37.9% reported emotional loneliness, 25.6% reported anxiety moods, and 49.0% reported depressive moods. Anxiety and depression were influenced by emotional and social loneliness, and marital status. These results showed that social and emotional loneliness worsened sleep quality with anxiety and depression. On the contrary, emotional loneliness had a significant and direct effect on sleep quality but not on social loneliness.Conclusion This study shows that psychological factors affect subjective sleep quality during self-restraint. Psychological factors, such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression should be considered when maintaining good sleep quality under self-restraint.

In the present study, we investigated relationships between social support, gratitude, and sense of coherence, focusing on the construct of and source of social support among young women. Methods: The study was conducted in 2014 in Japan. Participants comprised 208 female university students (aged 19.9 ± 1.1 years), who completed a self-administered anonymous questionnaire regarding perceived social support, gratitude, and sense of coherence. Results: Emotional and instrumental social support from acquaintances were found to be lower than those from family and friends. Gratitude was positively correlated with all forms of social support except instrumental social support from acquaintances. However, sense of coherence was positively correlated with both emotional and instrumental social support from family and only emotional social support from acquaintances. Multiple regression analysis showed that ­emotionalsupport from family and emotional support from acquaintances were positively associated with gratitude whereas emotional support from family was associated with sense of coherence. Conclusion: These results indicate that emotional social support from family was related to both gratitude and sense of coherence. Abstract

Many studies have suggested that Japanese children are tired, because they are busy and sleep deprived. The present article reviews the Japanese education system and education at home, in terms of their effects on sleep and mental health of elementary school students, and discusses sleep education at school.

Abstract

This chapter is an overview of sleep, lifestyle, mental, and physical health, and the characteristics of insomnia among the elderly and students. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the effects of the sleep management with actual examples of public health from the community and schools. Sleep management that included short naps and exercise in the evening was effective in promoting sleep and mental health with elderly people. The interventions demonstrated that the proper awakening maintenance and keeping proper arousal level during the evening were effective in improving sleep quality. Furthermore, sleep management that included sleep education and cognitive-behavioral interventions improved sleep-related habits and the quality of sleep. In this study, a sleep educational program using minimal cognitive-behavioral modification techniques was developed. Mental and physical health were also improved along with improving sleep with the elderly and students. These results suggest that cognitive-behavioral interventions to improve the sleep practices are effective for mental health, the activity of daily living (ADL), and the quality of life (QOL)

8. Anxiety and heart rate variability before sleep indicate chronic stress in students

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of chronic stress on the first-night effect in terms of autonomic nervous system activity and anxiety. Participants ( N = 11; M age = 20.3 yr., SD = 0.47) included six with high stress (High stress group) and five with low stress (Low stress group), for whom all EEG data were available from three consecutive nights. Heart rate variability was calculated using the MemCalc method. The ratio of low to high frequency of heart rate variability before sleep onset in the High stress group on the first night indicated significantly higher activities than the ratio before sleep onset in the Low stress group. No significant difference in sleep latency was found between the two groups. However, the High stress group was more aware of anxiety than was the Low stress group, and the former estimated more subjective difficulty in falling asleep. These results suggest that measuring LF/HF before sleep may constitute a new way to assess chronic stress.
