Abstract

The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover has monitored the Martian environment in Gale crater since landing in 2012. This study reports the record of optical depth derived from visible and near-infrared images of the Sun. Aerosol optical depth, which is mostly due to dust but also includes ice, dominates the record, with gas optical depth too small to measure. The optical depth record includes the effects of regional dust storms and one planet-encircling dust event, showing the expected peaks during southern spring and summer and relatively lower and more stable optical depth in fall and winter. The measurements show that there is a seasonally varying diurnal change in dust load, with the optical depth peaking in the morning during southern spring and summer, correlated with thermotidal pressure changes. However, there was no systematic diurnal change during autumn and winter, except after one regional storm. There were indications that the dust was relatively enhanced at high altitudes during high-optical-depth periods and that high-altitude ice was significant during winter. The observations did not provide much information about particle size or composition, but they were consistent with a smaller particle size after aphelion (in southern winter). No scattering halos were seen in associated sky images, even when there was visual evidence of ice hazes or clouds, which suggests small or amorphous ice particles. Unexpectedly, the measurement campaign revealed that the cameras collected saltating sand in their sunshades 1.97 m above the surface. As a result, the measurement strategy had to be adjusted to avoid high-elevation imaging to avoid sand covering the optics.

Cancer screening coverage has worsened due to the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study investigated the relationship between socioeconomic background, COVID-19 infection history and vaccine status, and regular cervical cancer screening (CCS) during the two years of the COVID-19 era in Japan.Patients and Methods: We used data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey, a nationwide, Internet-based, self-report cohort observational study conducted in 2022. The outcome variable was identified by asking whether the participants had undergone CCS within the last two years. Cervical cytology was performed in Japan by brushing the external cervical os. This study used multivariate log-binomial regression models to evaluate inequalities during regular checkups for CCS. Adjusted prevalence ratios (APRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated to incorporate the socioeconomic background variables.Results: Of the 12,066 participants, 5597 (46.4%) had undergone regular CCS for over two years. The prevalence ratio (PR) of patients who underwent CCS was 0.70 for those in their 20s and 0.78 for those in their 60s, compared to those in their 40s. Socioeconomic inequities were found in the following groups: unemployed/student, unmarried, high school graduate or lower, and household income below 4 million Yen. Our final multivariate analysis revealed that participants who were in their 20s or 60s, had a household income below 4 million Yen, were unmarried, had no annual health check-ups, and were unvaccinated with COVID-19 were at a higher risk of not undergoing CCS.Conclusion: The relationship between socioeconomic inequality and CCS hesitancy is prevalent among younger participants. The CCS coverage in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic year (2020– 2022) was not low compared with the pre-pandemic era.Keywords: cervical cancer screening, social inequality, screening hesitation, internet survey

Abstract

Sedimentary fans are key targets of exploration on Mars because they record the history of surface aqueous activity and habitability. The sedimentary fan extending from the Neretva Vallis breach of Jezero crater's western rim is one of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover's main exploration targets. Perseverance spent ∼250 sols exploring and collecting seven rock cores from the lower ∼25 m of sedimentary rock exposed within the fan's eastern scarp, a sequence informally named the “Shenandoah” formation. This study describes the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Shenandoah formation at two areas, “Cape Nukshak” and “Hawksbill Gap,” including a characterization, interpretation, and depositional framework for the facies that comprise it. The five main facies of the Shenandoah formation include: laminated mudstone, laminated sandstone, low-angle cross stratified sandstone, thin-bedded granule sandstone, and thick-bedded granule-pebble sandstone and conglomerate. These facies are organized into three facies associations (FA): FA1, comprised of laminated and soft sediment-deformed sandstone interbedded with broad, unconfined coarser-grained granule and pebbly sandstone intervals; FA2, comprised predominantly of laterally extensive, soft-sediment deformed laminated, sulfate-bearing mudstone with lenses of low-angle cross-stratified and scoured sandstone; and FA3, comprised of dipping planar, thin-bedded sand-gravel couplets. The depositional model favored for the Shenandoah formation involves the transition from a sand-dominated distal alluvial fan setting (FA1) to a stable, widespread saline lake (FA2), followed by the progradation of a river delta system (FA3) into the lake basin. This sequence records the initiation of a relatively long-lived, habitable lacustrine and deltaic environment within Jezero crater.

Abstract

This study used a finite element analysis approach employing Plaxis 3D to analyze the stress concentration ratio, a critical parameter in geotechnical engineering, to examine stresses operating on stone columns and soft soils. This study also looked at the effect of the stiffness ratio between the stone column and the neighboring soil. With the same length and three different diameters, 0.8 m, 1.0 m, and 1.2 m, or three area replacement ratios ranging from 7% to 16%, respectively, floating and end-bearing stone columns were used. The influence of soft soil undrained cohesion, cu ranging from 6 kPa to 40 kPa, was also considered in the current study. The stiffness ratio for columns to adjacent soil, end bearing or floating stone column, and area ratio all have a significant impression on the performance of the stone column in treating soft soil and stress transmission mechanisms in the enhanced soil body, according to parametric studies. The average stress concentration ratio in soil improved with an end-bearing stone column of φ= 35° and raised to 2.63 and 4.71 at φ = 50°, ranging from 1.41 to 2.35 for area replacement ratios of 7% and 16%.

Abstract

Considerable strides have been made in nanotechnology in recent years, with many nanotechnology-based achievements in the geotechnical-engineering. It seems certain that nanoparticles would be widely utilized to develop the geotechnical qualities for soils in modern applications. This study covers prior research on using nanomaterials in soil, their characteristics, and their influence on soil engineering. It seems certain that nanoparticles will be widely utilized to develop soil geotechnical properties in the near future. The application of current technologies to improve soil resistance requirements has resulted in the stability of many soil types with formation issues. This study analyzes the use of some nanomaterials and lime as additives or stabilization materials to improve soil resistance properties by geotechnical researchers. Researchers have demonstrated that adding local materials such as lime enhances the properties of soil. Still, a remarkable and interesting percentage of improvement was observed when adding nanoparticles to the soil by improving its engineering qualities as well as those of some other components, such as lowering stability and compressibility, raising density, and raising shear resistance.

Abstract

The Curiosity rover discovered fine-grained sedimentary rocks, which are inferred to represent an ancient lake and preserve evidence of an environment that would have been suited to support a martian biosphere founded on chemolithoautotrophy. This aqueous environment was characterized by neutral pH, low salinity, and variable redox states of both iron and sulfur species. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorus were measured directly as key biogenic elements; by inference, phosphorus is assumed to have been available. The environment probably had a minimum duration of hundreds to tens of thousands of years. These results highlight the biological viability of fluvial-lacustrine environments in the post-Noachian history of Mars.

Abstract

In situ geologic context mapping (GXM) based on rover and helicopter observations provides documentation of a nearly continuous record of geology and exposed surface structure over a 120 m-wide corridor along the traverse of the Mars 2020 /Perseverance rover. The results record the geologic context of Mars 2020 campaign sites and sample sites including the local extent of bedrock outcrops, stratigraphy, attitude, and structure from imaging and rover-based remote sensing, and outcrop lithology based on in situ proximity science. Mapping identifies a sequence of igneous lithologies including: (1) early mafic, possibly intrusive, rocks; (2) pervasively fractured and deeply altered massive bedrock of undetermined protolith; (3) buried and exhumed lava flows with pahoehoe and aa textures; (4) several varieties of regolith; and (5) small impact craters.

Abstract

The first samples collected by the Mars 2020 mission represent units exposed on the Jezero Crater floor, from the potentially oldest Séítah formation outcrops to the potentially youngest rocks of the heavily cratered Máaz formation. Surface investigations reveal landscape-to-microscopic textural, mineralogical, and geochemical evidence for igneous lithologies, some possibly emplaced as lava flows. The samples contain major rock-forming minerals such as pyroxene, olivine, and feldspar, accessory minerals including oxides and phosphates, and evidence for various degrees of aqueous activity in the form of water-soluble salt, carbonate, sulfate, iron oxide, and iron silicate minerals. Following sample return, the compositions and ages of these variably altered igneous rocks are expected to reveal the geophysical and geochemical nature of the planet’s interior at the time of emplacement, characterize martian magmatism, and place timing constraints on geologic processes, both in Jezero Crater and more widely on Mars. Petrographic observations and geochemical analyses, coupled with geochronology of secondary minerals, can also reveal the timing of aqueous activity as well as constrain the chemical and physical conditions of the environments in which these minerals precipitated, and the nature and composition of organic compounds preserved in association with these phases. Returned samples from these units will help constrain the crater chronology of Mars and the global evolution of the planet’s interior, for understanding the processes that formed Jezero Crater floor units, and for constraining the style and duration of aqueous activity in Jezero Crater, past habitability, and cycling of organic elements in Jezero Crater.

Abstract

Slightly less than 50 years after the deployment of Apollo 11 seismometer, and slightly more than 41 years after the operational end of the combined Apollo seismic network, seismology is back to operations in planetary science. InSight, or Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is a mission dedicated to understand the formation and evolution of terrestrial planets through the investigation of the interior structure and processes of Mars. This presentation will outline early mission results, focusing primarily on SEIS, the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure.
