This article reports the superparamagnetic behavior of metal-free nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs). The pulsed laser ablation (PLA) method was utilized to synthesize N-GQDs with an average diameter of 3.45 nm and a high doping level (N/C) of 1.4. Magnetic properties of as-synthesized N-GQDs were explored by performing magnetization vs magnetic field (M–H) and magnetization vs temperature (M–T) measurements. M–H plots measured in a temperature range of 2–300 K revealed the superparamagnetic behavior of N-GQDs. The value of saturation magnetization was found to be directly correlated to nitrogen concentration and a saturation magnetization up to 28.7 emu/g was obtained at room temperature (300 K). M–T measurements with zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) conditions were employed to study anisotropy energy barriers and blocking temperature. A variation in the blocking temperature (TB) from 288 to 61 K was observed when the external magnetic field (H) was changed from 0.1 to 0.6 T. The origin of superparamagnetism was attributed to the presence of graphitic nitrogen bonding configuration and defect states. The observed superparamagnetic properties along with the optical properties of N-GQDs create an opportunity for developing materials for biomedical applications and data recording devices. We report spectral properties and frequency summing that induce superemission (SE) in sandwich structures built of Co nanolayers. We found that separate Co films with a layer thickness of 8.1, 9.2, and 11.3 nm have discrete absorption spectra, originating in transverse quantum confinement in such thin metal films. The surface plasmon resonance in this system should appear at energies over 50 000 cm−1, with its longer-wavelength tail easily observable. All of the nanolayers studied also presented discrete emission spectra, with the emission bands strongly overlapping due to large bandwidths (1500–2300 cm−1). The emission decay is described by a single-exponential function with the lifetime of 103±5 ns. Similarly, the sandwich assembly with three Co nanolayers separated by two BN nanolayers also has discrete lines in its absorption spectrum. The spectrum of the assembly is a superposition of the respective spectra of the individual Co layers. We report that the assembly can sum the pumping radiation photons, producing photons with a higher energy. This excitation summing/exciton joining effect, discovered in sandwich film systems, is reported for the first time. Exiting the two outside Co nanolayers at specific frequencies, the Co nanolayer in the middle produces the sum frequency. We identified this emission as SE, with a bandwidth of only 179±5 cm−1. This superemission band appeared with the rise time of 36±3 ns and disappeared with 73±5 ns decay time, with the estimated SE quantum yield of 0.063. We analyzed the energy transfer by the exchange mechanism in detail, although a contribution of the electric dipole-dipole mechanism could not be excluded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[1] Measurements at~400 campaign-style GPS points and another 14 continuously recording stations in central Asia define variations in their velocities both along and across the Kyrgyz and neighboring parts of Tien Shan. They show that at the longitude of Kyrgyzstan the Tarim Basin converges with Eurasia at 20 [+ or -] 2 mm/yr, nearly two thirds of the total convergence rate between India and Eurasia at this longitude. This high rate suggests that the Tien Shan has grown into a major mountain range only late in the evolution of the India-Eurasia collision. Most of the convergence between Tarim and Eurasia within the upper crust of the Tien Shan presumably occurs by slip on faults on the edges of and within the belt, but 1-3 mm/yr of convergence is absorbed farther north, at the Dzungarian Alatau and at a lower rate with the Kazakh platform to the west. The Tarim Basin is thrust beneath the Tien Shan at ~4-7 min/yr. With respect to Eurasia, the Ferghana Valley rotates counterclockwise at -0.7[degrees] [Myr.sup.-1] about an axis at the southwest end of the valley. Thus, GPS data place a bound of ~4 mm/yr on the rate of crustal shortening across the Chatkal and neighboring ranges on the northwest margin of the Ferghana Valley, and they limit the present-day slip rate on the right-lateral Falas-Ferghana fault to less than ~2 mm/yr. GPS measurements corroborate geologic evidence indicating that the northern margin of the Pamir overthrusts the Alay Valley and require a rate of at least 10 and possibly 15 mm/yr.
