We present an application of an artificial neural network methodology to a modern wide-field sky survey Pan-STARRS1 in order to build a high-quality sample of disk galaxies visible in edge-on orientation. Such galaxies play an important role in the study of the vertical distribution of stars, gas and dust, which is usually not available to study in other galaxies outside the Milky Way. We give a detailed description of the network architecture and the learning process. The method demonstrates good effectiveness with detection rate about 97\% and it works equally well for galaxies over a wide range of brightnesses and sizes, which resulted in a creation of a catalogue of edge-on galaxies with $10^5$ of objects. We have undertaken a search for satellites around edge-on galaxies in the EGIPS catalog, which contains 16551 objects with declinations above -30 deg. We searched for systems with a central galaxy dominating in brightness by at least 1 mag compared to its companions. As a result, we discovered 1097 candidate satellites around 764 EGIPS galaxies with projected distances less than 500 kpc and a radial velocity difference less than 300 km/s. Of these, 757 satellites around 547 central galaxies have radial velocity accuracies higher than 20 km/s and satisfy the gravitationally bound condition. The ensemble of satellites is characterized by an average projected distance of 84 kpc and an average radial velocity dispersion of 103 km/s. Treating small satellites as test particles moving on isotropic orbits around central EGIPS galaxies, we determined the projected (orbital) masses of the edge-on galaxies. Within the luminosity range of 1.3*10^10 to 42*10^{10} Lsun, the total mass of the systems is well described by a linear dependence log(Mp)~0.88*log(g) with an average total mass-to-$K$-band luminosity equal to 17.5+-0.8 Msun/Lsun, which is typical for nearby spiral galaxies such as the Milky Way, M 31 and M 81., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, published in the Astrophysical Bulletin. We compare the properties of the stellar populations of the globular clusters and field stars in two dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs): ESO269-66, a near neighbor of the giant S0 galaxy NGC 5128, and KKs3, one of the few extremely isolated dSphs within 10 Mpc. The histories of star formation in these galaxies are known from previous work on deep stellar photometry using images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The age and metal content for the nuclear globular clusters in KKs3 and ESO269-66 are known from literature spectroscopic studies: T=12.6 billion years, [Fe/H]=-1.5 and -1.55 dex. We use the Sersic function to construct and analyze the profiles of the surface density of the stars with high and low metallicities (red and blue) in KKs3 and ESO269-66, and show that (1) the profiles of the density of red stars are steeper than those of blue stars, which is indicative of gradients of metallicity and age in the galaxies, and (2) the globular clusters in KKs3 and ESO269-66 contain roughly 4 and 40%, respectively, of all the old stars in the galaxies with metallicities [Fe/H]~-1.5 to -1.6 dex and ages of 12-14 billion years. The globular clusters are, therefore, relicts of the first, most powerful bursts of star formation in the central regions of these objects. We present a database created within the project on studying edge-on galaxies. These galaxies provide a unique opportunity to study the three-dimensional distribution of the matter in galaxy disks, which is extremely important for analyzing the influence of internal and external factors on the evolution of galaxies. For the moment, extensive observed material has been accumulated on the kinematics and photometry of such galaxies. The database is designed to organize information, make it easier to visualize, and to improve works on studying this type of objects. The database combines information from previous catalogs on edge-on galaxies and data from current projects; provides access to astrometric and photometric data; carries out interconnection with other databases. We conduct spectral observations of 138 superthin galaxies (STGs) with high radial-to-vertical stellar disk scales ratio with the Dual Imaging Spectrograph (DIS) on the 3.5m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory (APO) to obtain the ionized gas rotation curves with R ~ 5000 resolution. We also performed near infrared (NIR) H and Ks photometry for 18 galaxies with the NICFPS camera on the 3.5m telescope. The spectra, the NIR photometry and published optical and NIR photometry are used for modeling that utilizes the thickness of the stellar disk and rotation curves simultaneously. The projection and dust extinction effects are taken into account. We evaluate eight models that differ by their free parameters and constraints. As a result, we estimated masses and scale lengths of the galactic dark halos. We find systematic differences between the properties of our red and blue STGs. The blue STGs have a large fraction of dynamically under-evolved galaxies whose vertical velocity dispersion is low in both gas and stellar disks. The dark halo-to-disk scale ratio is shorter in the red STGs than in the blue ones, but in a majority of all STGs this ratio is under 2. The optical color $(r-i)$ of the superthin galaxies correlates with their rotation curve maximum, vertical velocity dispersion in stellar disks, and mass of the dark halo. We conclude that there is a threshold central surface density of 50 $M_{\odot}$\,pc$^{-2}$ below which we do not observe very thin, rotationally supported galactic disks., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted by ApJ

Using our HST/ACS observations of the recently found isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we homogeneously measured their star formation histories. We determined star formation rate as a function of time, as well as age and metallicity of the stellar populations. All objects demonstrate complex star formation history, with a significant portion of stars formed 10-13 Gyr ago. Nevertheless, stars of middle ages (1-8 Gyr) are presented. In order to understand how the star formation parameters influence the evolution of dSphs, we also studied a sample of nearest dSphs in different environment: isolated (d < 2 Mpc); beyond the Local Group virial radius (but within the Local Group zero velocity sphere); and the satellites of M 31 located within the virial zone (300 kpc). Using archival HST/ACS observations, we measured their star formation histories. Properties of dwarf galaxies formed and evolved in the lowest density environment remain largely unexplored and poorly understood. Especially this concerns the low-mass end (M_bar < 10^9 Mo). We overview the results of systematic study of a hundred void dwarfs from the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. We describe the ongoing project aiming to form Nearby Void galaxy sample (R < 25 Mpc) over the whole sky. 1354 objects with distances less than 25 Mpc fall within 25 voids delineated by 460 luminous galaxies/groups. The void major sizes range from 13 to 37 Mpc. 1088 of 1354 void galaxies reside deeply in voids, having distances to the nearest luminous neighbour of 2-11 Mpc. 195 nearest void galaxies reside in the Local Volume. The main goal of this work is to form a large, deep and representative sample of dwarf galaxies residing in voids of the nearby Universe. The formed sample is the basement for the comprehensive mass study of the galaxy content, their evolutionary status, clustering and dynamics with respect to their counterparts residing in more typical, denser regions and for study of void small-scale substructures. We present 25 voids over the entire sky within 25 Mpc from the Local Group. They are defined as groups of lumped empty spheres bounded by `luminous' galaxies with the absolute K-band magnitudes brighter than -22.0. The identified void regions include the Local Void and other known nearby voids. The nearest nine voids occupy a substantial part of the Local Volume. Of the total number of 6792 cataloged galaxies in the considered volume, 1354 objects fall into 25 nearby voids. Of this general void galaxy sample, we separate the sub-sample of `inner' void galaxies, residing deeper in voids, with distances to the nearest luminous galaxy DNN > 2.0 Mpc. The `inner' galaxy sample includes 1088 objects, mostly dwarfs with MB distribution peaked near -15.0 and extending down to -7.5 mag. Of them, 195 fall in the Local Volume (space within R=11 Mpc). We consider an all-sky sample of 1029 Local Volume (LV) galaxies situated within a distance of 11 Mpc. Their majority have precise distances, estimates of hydrogen mass fraction and star-formation rate derived from far-ultraviolet or Halpha fluxes. To describe an environment, we attribute two dimensionless values: the density contrast created by the most significant neighbour and the local density contrast produced by all neighbours within a separation of 1 Mpc. The hydrogen mass fraction exhibits a weak effect of HI deficiency being the most pronounced for dwarf irregular galaxies. The specific star-formation rate (sSFR) is more sensitive to the environment than the hydrogen mass fraction. Almost all (99 per cent) LV galaxies have their sSFR below -9.4 dex (1/yr). We notice that irregular dwarfs as well as late-type bulgeless galaxies are capable to reproduce their stellar mass with the observed sSFR over the cosmic time. Thus, the transformation of gas into stars in dIrs and spiral disks is rather sluggish unlike that in E, S0, dSph galaxies, whose star-formation history has been stormy and short. Scatter of SFR(Halpha)-to-SFR(FUV) ratio increases from Sc, Sd, Sm galaxies towards BCD, Im, Ir types that favours the idea of bursty star formations in low-mass galaxies. However, this bursty activity is caused rather by internal processes than by an external tidal action. We construct a multiparametric Tully-Fisher (TF) relation for a large sample of edge-on galaxies from the Revised Flat Galaxy Catalog using HI data from the EDD database and parameters from the EGIS catalog. We incorporate a variety of additional parameters including structural parameters of edge-on galaxies in different bandpasses. Besides the rotation curve maximum, only the HI-to-optical luminosity ratio and optical colours play a statistically significant role in the multiparametric TF relation. We are able to decrease the standard deviation of the multiparametric TF relation down to 0.32 mag, which is at the level of best modern samples of galaxies used for studies of the matter motion in the Universe via the TF-relation., Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

A faint dwarf irregular galaxy has been discovered in the HST/ACS field of LV J1157+5638. The galaxy is resolved into individual stars, including the brightest magnitude of the red giant branch. The dwarf is very likely a physical satellite of LV J1157+5638.The distance modulus of LV J1157+5638 using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance indicator is 29.82+-0.09 mag (D = 9.22+-0.38 Mpc). The TRGB distance modulus of LV J1157+5638 sat is 29.76+-0.11 mag (D = 8.95+-0.42 Mpc). The distances to the two galaxies are consistent within the uncertainties. The projected separation between them is only 3.9 kpc. LVJ1157+5638 has a total absolute V-magnitude of -13.26+-0.10 and linear Holmberg diameter of 1.36 kpc, whereas its faint satellite LV J1157+5638 sat has M_V = -9.38+-0.13 mag and Holmberg diameter of 0.37 kpc. Such a faint dwarf was discovered for the first time beyond the nearest 4 Mpc from us. The presence of main sequence stars in both galaxies unambiguously indicates the classification of the objects as dwarf irregulars (dIrrs) with recent or ongoing star formation events in both galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted to the MNRAS

DDO68 (UGC5340) is an unusual dwarf galaxy with extremely low gas metallicity (12+log(O/H) = 7.14) residing in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. Despite its apparent isolation, it shows both optical and HI morphological evidence for strong tidal disturbance. Here, we study the resolved stellar populations of DDO68 using deep images from the HST archive. We determined a distance of 12.75+-0.41 Mpc using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). The star formation history reconstruction reveals that about 60 per cent of stars formed during the initial period of star formation, about 12-14 Gyr ago. During the next 10 Gyr DDO68 was in the quenched state, with only slight traces of star formation. The onset of the most recent burst of star formation occurred about 300 Myr ago. We find that young populations with ages of several million to a few hundred million years are widely spread across various parts of DDO68, indicating an intense star formation episode with a high mean rate of 0.15 Msun/yr. A major fraction of the visible stars in the whole system (~80 per cent) have low metallicities: Z = Zsun/50 - Zsun/20. The properties of the northern periphery of DDO68 can be explained by an ongoing burst of star formation induced by the minor merger of a small, gas-rich, extremely metal-poor galaxy with a more typical dwarf galaxy. The paper presents new results of the ongoing study of the unusual Lynx-Cancer void galaxy DDO 68 with record-low-metallicity regions (12+log(O/H) ~7.14) of the current star formation (SF). They include: a) a new spectrum and photometry with the 6-m SAO RAS telescope (BTA) for the Luminous Blue Variable (LBV = DDO68-V1). Photometric data sets are complemented with those based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive images; b) the analysis of the DDO~68 supergiant shell (SGS) and the prominent smaller H-alpha arcs/shells visible at the HST image coupled with kinematics maps in H-alpha obtained with the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) at the BTA; c) the list of identified at the HST images of about 50 most luminous stars (-9.1 < M_V < -6.0 mag) related to star-forming regions with the known extremely low O/H. This is intended to pave the path for the actual science with the next generation of giant telescopes. We confirm the earlier hints on significant variations of the LBV optical light deriving its amplitude of dV > 3.7~mag for the first time. New data suggest that in 2008--2010 the LBV reached M_V = --10.5 and probably underwent a giant eruption. We argue that the structure of star-forming complexes along the SGS (`Northern Ring') perimeter provides evidence for the sequential induced SF episodes caused by the shell gas instabilities and gravitational collapse. We present a photometric study of the Andromeda XVIII dwarf spheroidal galaxy associated with M31, and situated well outside of the virial radius of the M31 halo. The galaxy was resolved into stars with Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys revealing the old red giant branch and red clump. With the new observational data we determined the Andromeda XVIII distance to be D = 1.33+-0.08 Mpc using the tip of red giant branch method. Thus, the dwarf is situated at the distance of 579 kpc from M31. We model the star formation history of Andromeda XVIII from the stellar photometry and Padova theoretical stellar isochrones. An ancient burst of star formation occurred 12-14 Gyr ago. There is no sign of recent/ongoing star formation in the last 1.5 Gyr. The mass fractions of the ancient and intermediate age stars are 34 and 66 per cent, respectively, and the total stellar mass is 4.2x10^6 Msun. It is probable that the galaxy has not experienced an interaction with M31 in the past. We also discuss star formation processes of dSphs KKR 25, KKs 03, as well as dTr KK 258. Their star formation histories were uniformly measured by us from HST/ACS observations. All the galaxies are situated well beyond the Local Group and the two dSphs KKR 25 and KKs 03 are extremely isolated. We used the Revised Flat Galaxy Catalog (RFGC) to create a sample of ultra-flat galaxies (UFG) covering the whole northern and southern sky apart from the Milky Way zone. It contains 817 spiral galaxies seen edge-on, selected into the UFG sample according to their apparent axial ratios $(a/b)_B\geq10.0$ and $(a/b)_R\geq8.53$ in the blue and red bands, respectively. Within this basic sample we fixed an exemplary sample of 441 UFG galaxies having the radial velocities of $V_{LG} < 10000$ km s$^{-1}$, Galactic latitude of $\mid b\mid>10^{\circ}$ and the blue angular diameter of $a_B > 1.0^{\prime}$. According to the Schmidt test the exemplary sample of 441 galaxies is characterized by about (80-90)% completeness, what is quite enough to study different properties of the ultra-flat galaxies. We found that more than 3/4 of UFGs have the morphological types within the narrow range of $T= 7\pm1$, i.e. the thinnest stellar disks occur among the Scd, Sd, and Sdm types. The average surface brightness of UFG galaxies tends to diminish towards the flattest bulge-less galaxies. Regularly shaped disks without signs of asymmetry make up about 2/3 both among all the RFGC galaxies, and the UFG sample objects. About 60% of ultra-flat galaxies can be referred to dynamically isolated objects, while 30% of them probably belong to the scattered associations (filaments, walls), and only about 10% of them are dynamically dominating galaxies with respect to their neighbours., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, 1 annex, published in Astrophysical Bulletin, 2016, 71, 1, 1-13

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are mostly investigated in the Local Group. DSphs are difficult targets for observations because of their small size and very low surface brightness. Here we measure spectroscopic and photometric parameters of three candidates for isolated dSphs, KKH65=BTS23, KK180, and KK227, outside the Local Group. The galaxies are found to be of low metallicity and low velocity dispersion. They are among the lowest surface brightness objects in the Local Universe. According to the measured radial velocities, metallicities, and structural and photometric parameters, KKH65 and KK227 are representatives of the ultra-diffuse quenched galaxies. KKH65 and KK227 belong to the outer parts of the groups NGC3414 and NGC5371, respectively. Radial velocities measured with the 6-meter telescope are given for 5 faint dwarf galaxies. All of these galaxies are confirmed as very nearby objects. Two of them, KK135 (dIr) and UGC 1703 (dSph/dTr), are local isolated dwarfs, and the three others, UGCA 127sat (dIr), NGC 2683dw1 (dIr), and NGC891dwA (dTr), belong to companions of nearby massive spirals., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted by Astrophysics

DG CVn is a binary system in which one of the components is an M type dwarf ultra fast rotator, only three of which are known in the solar neighborhood. Observations of DG CVn by the Swift satellite and several ground-based observatories during its super-flare event on 2014 allowed us to perform a complete hard X-ray - optical follow-up of a super-flare from the red-dwarf star. The observations support the fact that the super-flare can be explained by the presence of (a) large active region(s) on the surface of the star. Such activity is similar to the most extreme solar flaring events. This points towards a plausible extrapolation between the behaviour from the most active red-dwarf stars and the processes occurring in the Sun., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (10/07/15). 9 pages (5 figures and 2 tables)

Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys has been used to determine accurate distances for the spiral galaxy NGC2683 and 12 other galaxies in a zone of the "local velocity anomaly" from measurements of the luminosities of the brightest red giant branch stars. These galaxies lie in the Leo Spur, the nearest filament beyond our home Local Sheet. The new, accurate distance measurements confirm that galaxies along the Leo Spur are more distant than expected from uniform cosmic expansion, hence have large peculiar velocities toward us. The motions are generally explained by a previously published model that posits that the Local Sheet is descending at 259 km/s toward the south supergalactic pole due to expansion of the Local Void and being attracted at 185 km/s toward the Virgo Cluster. With the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology an empty void expands at 16 km/s/Mpc so a motion of 259 km/s requires the Local Void to be impressively large and empty. Small residuals from the published model can be attributed to an upward push toward the north supergalactic pole by expansion of the Gemini-Leo Void below the Leo Spur. The Leo Spur is sparsely populated but among its constituents there are two associations that contain only dwarf galaxies., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures, accepted in ApJ

We present a detailed study of the extremely isolated Sdm galaxy UGC4722 (M_B = -17.4) located in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. UGC4722 is a member of the catalogue of isolated galaxies, and has also been identified as one of the most isolated galaxies in the Local Supercluster. Optical images of the galaxy however show that it has a peculiar morphology with an elongated ~ 14 kpc long plume. New observations with the Russian 6-m telescope (BTA) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) of the ionised and neutral gas in UGC4722 reveal the second component responsible for the disturbed morphology of the system. This is a small, almost completely destroyed, very gas-rich dwarf (M_B = -15.2, M_HI/L_B ~4.3). We estimate the oxygen abundance for both galaxies to be 12+log(O/H) ~ 7.5-7.6, which is 2-3 times lower than what is expected from the luminosity-metallicity relation for similar galaxies in denser environments. The ugr colours of the plume derived from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images are consistent with a simple stellar population with a post starburst age of 0.45-0.5 Gyr. This system hence appears to be the first known case of a minor merger with a prominent tidal feature consisting of a young stellar population., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Observations of the highly isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy KKs 3 = [KK2000] 03 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) are presented. We measured the galaxy distance of $2.12\pm0.07$ Mpc using the Tip of Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method. The total blue absolute magnitude of the galaxy is estimated as $M_B = -10.8$ mag. We briefly discuss the star formation history of KKs 3 derived from its colour-magnitude diagram. According to our calculation, the total stellar mass of the galaxy is $2.3\times10^7M_{\odot}$, and most stars (74\%) were formed at an early epoch more than 12 Gyr ago. We determined the spatial structure of the scattered concentration of galaxies in the Canes Venatici constellation. We redefined the distances for 30 galaxies of this region using the deep images from the Hubble Space Telescope archive with the WFPC2 and ACS cameras. We carried out a high-precision stellar photometry of the resolved stars in these galaxies, and determined the photometric distances by the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) using an advanced technique and modern calibrations. High accuracy of the results allows us to distinguish the zone of chaotic motions around the center of the system. A group of galaxies around M94 is characterized by the median velocity VLG=287 km/s, distance D=4.28 Mpc, internal velocity dispersion sigma=51 km/s and total luminosity LB=1.61x10^10 Lo. The projection mass of the system amounts to Mp=2.56x10^12 Mo, which corresponds to the mass-luminosity ratio of (M/L)p=159 (M/L)o. The estimate of the mass-luminosity ratio is significantly higher than the typical ratio M/LB ~30 for the nearby groups of galaxies. The CVnI cloud of galaxies contains 4-5 times less luminous matter compared with the well-known nearby groups, like the Local Group, M81 and Centaurus A. The central galaxy M94 is at least 1 mag fainter than any other central galaxy of these groups. This paper is the first of a series considering the properties of distribution of nearby galaxies in the low density regions. Among 7596 galaxies with radial velocities V_{LG}<3500 km/s, absolute magnitudes M_K<-18.4^m$, and Galactic latitudes |b| >15 degr there are 3168 field galaxies (i.e. 42%) that do not belong to pairs, groups or clusters in the Local universe. Applying to this sample the percolation method with a radius of r_0=2.8 Mpc, we found 226 diffuse agglomerates with n>=4 number of members. The structures of eight most populated objects among them (n>=25) are discussed. These non-virialized agglomerates are characterized by a median dispersion of radial velocities of about 170 km/s, the linear size of around 6 Mpc, integral K-band luminosity of 3*10^{11} L_sun, and a formal virial-mass-to-luminosity ratio of about 700 M_sun/L_sun. The mean density contrast for the considered agglomerates is only

We report a list of groups consisting of dwarf galaxies only. The sample contains 126 objects, mainly combined in pairs. The most populated group contains six dwarf galaxies. The majority of systems considered reside in the low-density regions and evolve unaffected by massive galaxies. The characteristic sizes and velocity dispersions of groups are 30 kpc and 11 km/s, respectively. They resemble the associations of dwarf galaxies, but are more compact. On the whole, groups and associations form a continuous sequence. We present a catalog of 520 most isolated nearby galaxies with radial velocities V_LG<3500 km/s covering the entire sky. This population of "space orphans" makes up 4.8% among 10900 galaxies with measured radial velocities. We describe the isolation criterion used to select our sample, called the "Local Orphan Galaxies" (LOG), and discuss their basic optical and HI properties. A half of the LOG catalog is occupied by the Sdm, Im and Ir morphological type galaxies without a bulge. The median ratio M_gas/M_star in the LOG galaxies exceeds 1. The distribution of the catalog galaxies on the sky looks uniform with some signatures of a weak clustering on the scale of about 0.5 Mpc. The LOG galaxies are located in the regions where the mean local density of matter is approximately 50 times lower than the mean global density. We indicate a number of LOG galaxies with distorted structures, which may be the consequence of interaction of isolated galaxies with massive dark objects.

The neutral hydrogen properties of 1,822 galaxies are being studied with the Green Bank 100m and the Parkes 64m telescopes as part of the 'Cosmic Flows' program. Observed parameters include systemic velocities, profile line widths, and fluxes. The line width information can be combined with optical and infrared photometry to obtain distances. The 1,822 HI observations complement an inventory of archives. All told, HI line width information is available for almost all of five samples: (i) luminosity-line width correlation calibrators, (ii) zero-point calibrators for the supernova Ia scale, (iii) a dense local sample of spiral galaxies with M_{Ks} < -21 within 3,000 km/s, (iv) a sparser sample of 60 $\mu$m selected galaxies within 6,000 km/s that provides all-sky coverage of our extended supercluster complex, and (v) an even sparser sample of flat galaxies, extreme edge-on spirals, extending in a volume out to 12,000 km/s. We present observations of multiple system of dwarf galaxies at the Russian 6-m telescope and the GMRT (Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope). The optical observations are a part of the programme Study of Groups of Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Supercluster. The group of galaxies under consideration looks like filament of 5 dwarfs. Two faint galaxies show peculiar structure. Long slit spectrum reveals inner motions about 150 km/s in one of them. It suggests that the galaxy is on stage of ongoing interaction. We introduce the first entire-sky catalog of the most isolated nearby galaxies with radial velocities VLG<3500 km/s. This kind of cosmic "orphans" amounts to 4% among all known galaxies within the same velocity range. The radial velocities are measured for 45 galaxies located in the neighborhoods of 29 likely isolated galaxies in a new catalog. A database can be accessed on the web at http://edd.ifa.hawaii.edu that was developed to promote access to information related to galaxy distances. The database has three functional components. First, tables from many literature sources have been gathered and enhanced with links through a distinct galaxy naming convention. Second, comparisons of results both at the levels of parameters and of techniques have begun and are continuing, leading to increasing homogeneity and consistency of distance measurements. Third, new material are presented arising from ongoing observational programs at the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope, radio telescopes at Green Bank, Arecibo, and Parkes and with Hubble Space Telescope. The CMDs/TRGB (Color-Magnitude Diagrams/Tip of the Red Giant Branch) section of the Extragalactic Distance Database contains a compilation of observations of nearby galaxies from the Hubble Space Telescope. Approximately 250 (and increasing) galaxies in the Local Volume have CMDs and the stellar photometry tables used to produce them available through the web. Various stellar populations that make up a galaxy are visible in the CMDs, but our primary purpose for collecting and analyzing these galaxy images is to measure the TRGB in each. We can estimate the distance to a galaxy by using stars at the TRGB as standard candles. We present the coordinates, apparent magnitudes, and morphological types for 230 galaxies presumably identified with HIPASS (HI Parkes All-Sky Survey) sources. The new optical counterparts of the HIPASS sources follow the well-known statistical relationships between the hydrogen mass, luminosity, and type of galaxies. Low-surface-brightness galaxies constitute a significant fraction among these objects. The median value of the hydrogen mass-to-luminosity ratio for them is a factor of 2 or 3 higher than that for bright HIPASS galaxies, reaching $1.7 M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}$. A number of our objects are located near the boundary $\log(M_{HI}/L_B) = 0.2(M_B + 20)$ that defines the zone of gravitational stability of disk galaxies against large-scale star formation.

We report a catalog of 509 pairs identified among 10403 nearby galaxies with line-of-sight velocities V_LG < 3500 km/s.We selected binary systems in accordance with two criteria (bounding and temporal), which require the physical pair of galaxies to have negative total energy and its components to be located inside the zero-velocity surface. We assume that individual galaxy masses are proportional to their total K-band luminosities, M = L_K x 6M/L. The catalog gives the magnitudes and morphological types of galaxies and also the projected (orbital) masses and pair isolation indices. The component line-of-sight velocity differences and projected distances of the binary systems considered have power-law distributions with the median values of 35 km/s and 123 kpc, respectively. The median mass-to-K-band luminosity ratio is equal to 11 M/L, and its uncertainty is mostly due to the errors of measured velocities. Our sample of binary systems has a typical density contrast of d ro/ro_c ~ 500 and a median crossing time of about 3.5 Gyr. We point out the substantial fraction of binary systems consisting of late-type dwarf galaxies, where the luminosities of both components are lower than that of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The median projected distance for 41 such pairs is only 30 kpc, and the median difference of their line-of-sight velocities is equal to 14 km/s which is smaller than the typical error for radial-velocity (30 km/s). This specific population of gas-rich dwarf binary galaxies such as I Zw 18 may be at the stage immediately before merging of its components. We use updated data on distances and velocities of galaxies in the proximity of the Local Group (LG) in order to establish properties of the local Hubble flow. For 30 neighbouring galaxies with distances 0.7 < D_LG < 3.0 Mpc, the Local flow is characterized by the Hubble parameter H_loc = (78+/-2) km/(s*Mpc), the mean-square peculiar velocity sigma_v = 25 km/s, corrected for errors of radial velocity measurements (~4 km/s) and distance measurements (~10 km/s), as well as the radius of the zero-velocity surface R_0 = (0.96+/-0.03) Mpc. The minimum value for sigma_v is achieved when the barycenter of the LG is located at the distance D_c = (0.55+/-0.05) D_M31 towards M31 corresponding to the Milky Way-to-M31 mass ratio M_MW / M_M31 ~ 4/5. In the reference frame of the 30 galaxies at 0.7 - 3.0 Mpc, the LG barycenter has a small peculiar velocity ~(24+/-4) km/s towards the Sculptor constellation. The derived value of R_0 corresponds to the total mass M_T(LG) = (1.9+/-0.2) 10^12 M_sun with Omega_m = 0.24 and a topologically flat universe, a value in good agreement with the sum of virial mass estimates for the Milky Way and M31., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. We present surface photometry and metallicity measurements for 104 nearby dwarf galaxies imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition, we carried out photometry for 26 galaxies of the sample and for Sextans B on images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our sample comprises dwarf spheroidal, irregular and transition type galaxies located within ~10 Mpc in the field and in nearby groups: M81, Centaurus A, Sculptor, and Canes Venatici I cloud. It is found that the early-type galaxies have on average higher metallicity at a given luminosity in comparison to the late-type objects. Dwarf galaxies with M_B > -12 -- -13 mag deviate toward larger scale lengths from the scale length -- luminosity relation common for spiral galaxies, h \propto L^{0.5}_B. The following correlations between fundamental parameters of the galaxies are consistent with expectations if there is pronounced gas-loss through galactic winds: 1) between the luminosity of early-type dwarf galaxies and the mean metallicity of constituent red giant branch stars, Z ~ L^0.4, 2) between mean surface brightness within the 25 mag/sq.arcsec isophote and the corresponding absolute magnitude in the V and I bands, SB_25 ~ 0.3 M_25, and 3) between the central surface brightness (or effective surface brightness) and integrated absolute magnitude of galaxies in the V and I bands, SB_0 ~ 0.5 M_L, SB_e ~ 0.5 M_e. The Hubble Space Telescope observations of the nearby galaxy group M 81/M 82 and its vicinity indicate that the expansion outflow around the group is dominated by the antigravity of the dark energy background. The local density of dark energy in the area is estimated to be near the global dark energy density or perhaps exactly equal to it. This conclusion agrees with our previous results for the Local group vicinity and the vicinity of the Cen A/M 83 group., Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure

We report the detection of dark energy near the Milky Way made with precision observations of the local Hubble flow of expansion. We estimate the local density of dark energy and find that it is near, if not exactly equal to, the global dark energy density. The result is independent of, compatible with, and complementary to the horizon-scale observations in which dark energy was first discovered. Together with the cosmological concordance data, our result forms direct observational evidence for the Einstein antigravity as a universal phenomenon -- in the same sense as the Newtonian universal gravity., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

A structure with a massive group in its center and a cool expansion outflow outside is studied around the Cen A galaxy with the use of the Hubble Space Telescope observations. It is demonstrated that the dynamics of the flow is dominated by the antigravity of the dark energy background. The density of dark energy in the cell is estimated to be near the global cosmological density. This agrees with our previous result from the neighborhood of the Local group. A notion of the ``Hubble cell'' is introduced as a building block of the local structure of the universe.

We considered kinematic and virial parameters of a sample of galaxy triplets from the Local Supercluster (LS). The galaxies were selected from the LEDA database, and their radial velocities are no more than 3100 km/s. The sample contains 176 systems selected according to the Karachentsev criterion. We calculated the following median parameters of the LS triplets: rms velocity of galaxies with respect to triplet center, Sv=30 km/s; harmonic mean radius, Rh=160 kpc; virial mass Mvir=3.6x10^11 Msun; and mass-to-light ratio, Mvir/L=35 Msun/Lsun. Although various investigators used different approaches to compile samples of triple systems, general properties of the triplets in all the samples we considered agree rather satisfactorily. Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Cameras for Surveys has been used to determine accurate distances for 20 galaxies from measurements of the luminosity of the brightest red giant branch stars. Five associations of dwarf galaxies that had originally been identified based on strong correlations on the plane of the sky and in velocity are shown to be equally well correlated in distance. Two more associations with similar properties have been discovered. Another association is identified that is suggested to be unbound through tidal disruption. The associations have the spatial and kinematic properties expected of bound structures with 1 - 10 x 10^11 solar mass. However, these entities have little light with the consequence that mass-to-light ratios are in the range 100 - 1000 in solar units. The physical nature of the very local (<3 Mpc) Hubble flow is studied on the basis of the recent high precision observations in the Local Volume. A model including both analytical treatment and computer simulations describes the flow dynamical evolution from a chaotic Little Bang initial state to the present-day state of a quasi-regular expansion. The two major observational parameters of the flow, which are the rate of expansion and the velocity dispersion, find a clear qualitative and quantitative explanation in the model., Comment: submitted to A&A

The phenomenon of the very local ($\le3$ Mpc) Hubble flow is studied on the basis of the data of recent precision observations. A set of computer simulations is performed to trace the trajectories of the flow galaxies back in time to the epoch of the formation of the Local Group. It is found that the `initial conditions' of the flow are drastically different from the linear velocity-distance relation. We present Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of sixteen dwarf galaxies as part of our snapshot survey of nearby galaxy candidates. We derive their distances from the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch stars with a typical accuracy of ~12%. The resulting distances are 4.26 Mpc (KKH 5), 4.74 Mpc (KK 16), 4.72 Mpc (KK 17), 4.66 Mpc (ESO 115-021), 4.43 Mpc (KKH 18), 3.98 Mpc (KK 27), 4.61 Mpc (KKH 34), 4.99 Mpc (KK 54), 4.23 Mpc (ESO 490-017), 4.90 Mpc (FG 202), 5.22 Mpc (UGC 3755), 5.18 Mpc (UGC 3974), 4.51 Mpc (KK 65), 5.49 Mpc (UGC 4115), 3.78 Mpc (NGC 2915), and 5.27 Mpc (NGC 6503). Based on distances and radial velocities of 156 nearby galaxies, we plot the local velocity-distance relation, which has a slope of H_0 = 73 km/(c * Mpc) and a radial velocity dispersion of 85 km/s. When members of the M81 and CenA groups are removed, and distance errors are taken into account, the radial velocity dispersion drops to sigma_v=41 km/s. The local Hubble flow within 5 Mpc exibits a significant anisotropy, with two infall peculiar velocity regions directed towards the Supergalactic poles. However, two observed regions of outflow peculiar velocity, situated on the Supergalactic equator, are far away (~50 degr.) from the Virgo/anti-Virgo direction, which disagrees with a spherically symmetric Virgo-centric flow. About 63% of galaxies within 5 Mpc belong to known compact and loose groups. Apart from them, we found six new probable groups, consisting entirely of dwarf galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. We consider a thickness of stellar disks of late-type galaxies by analyzing the R and K_s band photometric profiles for two independent samples of edge-on galaxies. The main goal is to verify a hypotesis that a thickness of old stellar disks is related to the relative masses of the spherical and disk components of galaxies. We confirm that the radial-to-vertical scale length ratio for galactic disks increases (the disks become thinner) with the increasing of total mass-to-light ratio of the galaxies, which characterize the contribution of dark halo to the total mass, and with the decreasing of central deprojected disk brightness (surface density). Our results are in good agreement with numerical models of collisionless disks evolved from subcritical velocity dispersion state to a marginally stable equilibrium state. This suggests that in most galaxies the vertical stellar velocity dispersion, which determine the equilibrium disk thickness, is close to the minimum value, that ensures disk stability. The thinnest edge-on disks appear to be low brightness galaxies (after deprojection) in which a dark halo mass far exceeds a mass of the stellar disk., Comment: 13 pages. We present Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of eighteen galaxies situated in the vicinity of the Local Group (LG) as part of an ongoing snapshot survey of nearby galaxies. Their distances derived from the magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch are 1.92+-0.10 Mpc (ESO 294-010), 3.06+-0.37 (NGC404), 3.15+-0.32 (UGCA105), 1.36+-0.07 (SexB), 1.33+-0.08 (NGC3109), 2.64+-0.21 (UGC6817), 2.86$+-0.14 (KDG90), 2.27+-0.19 (IC3104), 2.54+-0.17 (UGC7577), 2.56$+-0.15 (UGC8508), 3.01+-0.29 (UGC8651), 2.61+-0.16 (KKH86), 2.79$+-0.26 (UGC9240), 1.11+-0.07 (SagDIG), 0.94+-0.04 (DDO210), 2.07$+-0.18 (IC5152), 2.23+-0.15 (UGCA438), and 2.45+-0.13 (KKH98). Based on the velocity-distance data for 36 nearest galaxies around the LG, we find the radius of the zero-velocity surface of the LG to be R_0 = (0.94+-0.10) Mpc, which yields a total mass M_{LG} = (1.3+-0.3)*10^{12} M_{\sun}. The galaxy distribution around the LG reveals a Local Minivoid which does not contain any galaxy brighter than M_V=-10 mag within a volume of ~100 Mpc^3. The local Hubble flow seems to be very cold, having a one-dimensional mean random motion of ~30 km/s. The best-fit value of the local Hubble parameter is 73+-15 km/s Mpc^{-1}.
