As regional drought conditions continue deteriorating around the world, residential water use has been brought into the built environment spotlight. Nevertheless, the understanding of water use behavior in residential buildings is still limited. This paper presents data analytics and results from monitoring data of daily water use (DWU) in 50 single-family homes in Texas, USA. The results show the typical frequency distribution curve of the DWU per household and indicate personal income, education level and energy use of appliances all have statistically significant effects on the DWU per capita. Analysis of the water-intensive use demonstrates the residents tend to use more water in post-vacation days. These results help generate awareness of water use behavior in homes. Ultimately, this research could support policy makers to establish a water use baseline and inform water conservation programs.

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Extragalactic Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Galaxy Astrophysics - Abstract
The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well as astrophysical and cosmological stochastic backgrounds. Since the relative strength and angular distribution of the many possible sources of GWs are not well constrained, searches for GW signals must be performed in a model-independent way. To that end we perform two directional searches for persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. The latter result is the first of its kind. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we present 90% confidence level (CL) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with typical values between 2-20x10^-50 strain^2 Hz^-1 and 5-35x10^-49 strain^2 Hz^-1 sr^-1 for pointlike and extended sources respectively. The limits on pointlike sources constitute a factor of 30 improvement over the previous best limits. We also set 90% CL limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW strain from interesting targets including Sco X-1, SN1987A and the Galactic Center as low as ~7x10^-25 in the most sensitive frequency range near 160 Hz. These limits are the most constraining to date and constitute a factor of 5 improvement over the previous best limits., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We present the first modeled search for gravitational waves using the complete binary black hole gravitational waveform from inspiral through the merger and ringdown for binaries with negligible component spin. We searched approximately 2 years of LIGO data taken between November 2005 and September 2007 for systems with component masses of 1-99 solar masses and total masses of 25-100 solar masses. We did not detect any plausible gravitational-wave signals but we do place upper limits on the merger rate of binary black holes as a function of the component masses in this range. We constrain the rate of mergers for binary black hole systems with component masses between 19 and 28 solar masses and negligible spin to be no more than 2.0 per Mpc^3 per Myr at 90% confidence., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasi-normal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two co-located Hanford gravitational wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a pulsar timing glitch. No gravitational wave detection candidate was found. We place Bayesian 90% confidence upper limits of 6.3e-21 to 1.4e-20 on the peak intrinsic strain amplitude of gravitational wave ring-down signals, depending on which spherical harmonic mode is excited. The corresponding range of energy upper limits is 5.0e44 to 1.3e45 erg., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a network of three detectors built to detect local perturbations in the space-time metric from astrophysical sources. These detectors, two in Hanford, WA and one in Livingston, LA, are power-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers. In their fifth science run (S5), between November 2005 and October 2007, these detectors accumulated one year of triple coincident data while operating at their designed sensitivity. In this paper, we describe the calibration of the instruments in the S5 data set, including measurement techniques and uncertainty estimation., Comment: 49 pages, 23 figures

We present a search for periodic gravitational waves from the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The search coherently analyzes data in a 12-day interval taken from the fifth science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. It searches gravitational wave frequencies from 100 to 300 Hz, and covers a wide range of first and second frequency derivatives appropriate for the age of the remnant and for different spin-down mechanisms. No gravitational wave signal was detected. Within the range of search frequencies, we set 95% confidence upper limits of 0.7--1.2e-24 on the intrinsic gravitational wave strain, 0.4--4e-4 on the equatorial ellipticity of the neutron star, and 0.005--0.14 on the amplitude of r-mode oscillations of the neutron star. These direct upper limits beat indirect limits derived from energy conservation and enter the range of theoretical predictions involving crystalline exotic matter or runaway r-modes. This is the first gravitational wave search to present upper limits on r-modes., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

We present an up-to-date, comprehensive summary of the rates for all types of compact binary coalescence sources detectable by the Initial and Advanced versions of the ground-based gravitational-wave detectors LIGO and Virgo. Astrophysical estimates for compact-binary coalescence rates depend on a number of assumptions and unknown model parameters, and are still uncertain. The most confident among these estimates are the rate predictions for coalescing binary neutron stars which are based on extrapolations from observed binary pulsars in our Galaxy. These yield a likely coalescence rate of 100 per Myr per Milky Way Equivalent Galaxy (MWEG), although the rate could plausibly range from 1 per Myr per MWEG to 1000 per Myr per MWEG. We convert coalescence rates into detection rates based on data from the LIGO S5 and Virgo VSR2 science runs and projected sensitivities for our Advanced detectors. Using the detector sensitivities derived from these data, we find a likely detection rate of 0.02 per year for Initial LIGO-Virgo interferometers, with a plausible range between 0.0002 and 0.2 per year. The likely binary neutron-star detection rate for the Advanced LIGO-Virgo network increases to 40 events per year, with a range between 0.4 and 400 per year.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors for compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. We present noise spectral density curves for each of the four detectors that operated during these science runs which are representative of the typical performance achieved by the detectors for CBC searches. These spectra are intended for release to the public as a summary of detector performance for CBC searches during these science runs., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Progenitor scenarios for short gamma-ray bursts (short GRBs) include coalescenses of two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, which would necessarily be accompanied by the emission of strong gravitational waves. We present a search for these known gravitational-wave signatures in temporal and directional coincidence with 22 GRBs that had sufficient gravitational-wave data available in multiple instruments during LIGO's fifth science run, S5, and Virgo's first science run, VSR1. We find no statistically significant gravitational-wave candidates within a [-5, +1) s window around the trigger time of any GRB. Using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test, we find no evidence for an excess of weak gravitational-wave signals in our sample of GRBs. We exclude neutron star-black hole progenitors to a median 90% CL exclusion distance of 6.7 Mpc., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Accepted by ApJ

We describe a novel switching algorithm based on a ``reverse'' Monte Carlo method, in which the potential is stochastically modified before the system configuration is moved. This new algorithm facilitates a generalized formulation of cluster-type Monte Carlo methods, and the generalization makes it possible to derive cluster algorithms for systems with both discrete and continuous degrees of freedom. The roughening transition in the sine-Gordon model has been studied with this method, and high-accuracy simulations for system sizes up to $1024^2$ were carried out to examine the logarithmic divergence of the surface roughness above the transition temperature, revealing clear evidence for universal scaling of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
This paper describes a new Monte Carlo method based on a novel stochastic potential switching algorithm. This algorithm enables the equilibrium properties of a system with potential $V$ to be computed using a Monte Carlo simulation for a system with a possibly less complex stochastically altered potential $\tilde V$. By proper choices of the stochastic switching and transition probabilities, it is shown that detailed balance can be strictly maintained with respect to the original potential $V$. The validity of the method is illustrated with a simple one-dimensional example. The method is then generalized to multidimensional systems with any additive potential, providing a framework for the design of more efficient algorithms to simulate complex systems. A near-critical Lennard-Jones fluid with more than 20000 particles is used to illustrate the method. The new algorithm produced a much smaller dynamic scaling exponent compared to the Metropolis method and improved sampling efficiency by over an order of magnitude., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter ,Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
Large-scale computer simulations involving more than a million particles have been performed to study the melting transition in a two-dimensional hard disk fluid. The van der Waals loop previously observed in the pressure-density relationship of smaller simulations is shown to be an artifact of finite-size effects. Together with a detailed scaling analysis of the bond orientation order, the new results provide compelling evidence for the Halperin-Nelson-Young picture. Scaling analysis of the translational order also yields a lower bound for the melting density that is much higher than previously thought., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
We describe a novel simulation method that eliminates the slowing-down problem in the Monte Carlo simulations of imaginary-time path integrals near the continuum limit. This method combines a stochastic blocking procedure with the multigrid method to rapidly accelerate the sampling of paths in a quantum Monte Carlo simulation, making its dynamics more ergodic. The effectiveness and efficiency of this method are demonstrated for several one-dimensional quantum systems and compared to other standard and accelerated methods., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures. J. Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
This article gives an introduction to the multilevel blocking (MLB) approach to both the fermion and the dynamical sign problem in path-integral Monte Carlo simulations. MLB is able to substantially relieve the sign problem in many situations. Besides an exposition of the method, its accuracy and several potential pitfalls are discussed, providing guidelines for the proper choice of certain MLB parameters. Simulation results are shown for strongly interacting electrons in a 2D parabolic quantum dot, the real-time dynamics of several simple model systems, and the dissipative two-state dynamics (spin-boson problem)., Comment: Review, 20 pages REVTeX, incl. 7 figures

This article provides an introduction to the ideas behind the multilevel blocking (MLB) approach to the fermion sign problem in path-integral Monte Carlo simulations, and also gives a detailed discussion of MLB results for quantum dots. MLB can turn the exponential severity of the sign problem into an algebraic one, thereby enabling numerically exact studies of otherwise inaccessible systems. Low-temperature simulation results for up to eight strongly correlated electrons in a parabolic 2D quantum dot are presented., Comment: 10 Pages, includes 4 figures and mprocl.sty

The crossover from weak to strong correlations in parabolic quantum dots at zero magnetic field is studied by numerically exact path-integral Monte Carlo simulations for up to eight electrons. By the use of a multilevel blocking algorithm, the simulations are carried out free of the fermion sign problem. We obtain a universal crossover only governed by the density parameter $r_s$. For $r_s>r_c$, the data are consistent with a Wigner molecule description, while for $r_s

An exact and efficient new method to simulate dynamics in dissipative quantum systems is presented. A stochastic Liouville equation, deduced from Feynman and Vernon's path-integral expression of the reduced density matrix, is used to describe the exact dynamics at any dissipative strength and for arbitrarily low temperatures. The utility of the method is demonstrated by applications to a damped harmonic oscillator and a double-well system immersed in an Ohmic bath at low temperatures., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

Constant temperature molecular dynamics simulations were used to study solutions of flexible polyelectrolyte chains at nonzero concentrations with explicit counterions and unscreened coulombic interactions. Counterion condensation, measured via the self-diffusion coefficient of the counterions, is found to increase with polymer concentration, but contrary to the prediction of Manning theory, the renormalized charge fraction on the chains decreases with increasing Bjerrum length without showing any saturation. Scaling analysis of the radius of gyration shows that the chains are extended at low polymer concentrations and small Bjerrum lengths, while at sufficiently large Bjerrum lengths, the chains shrink to produce compact structures with exponents smaller than a gaussian chain, suggesting the presence of attractive intrachain interactions. A careful study of the radial distribution function of the center-of-mass of the polyelectrolyte chains shows clear evidence that effective interchain attractive interactions also exist in solutions of flexible polyelectrolytes, similar to what has been found for rodlike polyelectrolytes. Our results suggest that the broad maximum observed in scattering experiments is due to clustering of chains., Comment: 12 pages, REVTeX, 15 eps figures

We propose a novel approach toward the general solution of the sign problem in real-time path-integral simulations. Using a recursive multilevel blocking strategy, this method circumvents the sign problem by synthesizing the phase cancellations arising from interfering quantum paths on multiple timescales. A number of numerical examples with one or a few explicit degrees of freedom illustrate the usefulness of the method., Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figures, REVTeX

Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
A general algorithm toward the solution of the fermion sign problem in finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations has been formulated for discretized fermion path integrals with nearest-neighbor interactions in the Trotter direction. This multilevel approach systematically implements a simple blocking strategy in a recursive manner to synthesize the sign cancellations among different fermionic paths throughout the whole configuration space. The practical usefulness of the method is demonstrated for interacting electrons in a quantum dot., Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, incl. two figures

Condensed Matter - Abstract
Dynamical localization of a tunneling system by means of an oscillating external field is examined for an arbitrary doublet of tunneling states. We show that the condition of an exact crossing of Floquet levels, required for localization in a symmetric system, can be substantially relaxed for tunneling systems with broken symmetry. This generalization equally applies to tunneling systems coupled to a dissipative environment., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev. Letters

Current fluctuations in a dissipative two-state system have been studied using a novel quantum dynamics simulation method. After a transformation of the path integrals, the tunneling dynamics is computed by deterministic integration over the real-time paths under the influence of colored noise. Condensed Matter - Abstract
The observability of electronic coherence in electron transfer reactions is discussed. We show that under appropriate circumstances large-amplitude oscillations can be found in the electronic occupation probabilities. The initial preparation of the system is of crucial importance for this effect, and we discuss conditions under which experiments detecting electronic coherence should be feasible. The Feynman-Vernon influence functional formalism is extended to examine more general and experimentally relevant initial preparations. Analytical expressions and path integral quantum dynamics simulations were developed to study the effects of various initial preparations on the observability of electronic coherence., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, to be published in J. Physics - Chemical Physics ,Condensed Matter - Abstract
We present a real-time path integral theory for the rate of electron transfer reactions. Using graph theoretic techniques, the dynamics is expressed in a formally exact way as a set of integral equations. With a simple approximation for the self-energy, the rate can then be computed analytically to all orders in the electronic coupling matrix element. We present results for the crossover region between weak (nonadiabatic) and strong (adiabatic) electronic coupling and show that this theory provides a rigorous justification for the salient features of the rate expected within conventional electron transfer theory. Nonetheless, we find distinct characteristics of quantum behavior even in the strongly adiabatic limit where classical rate theory is conventionally thought to be applicable. To our knowledge, this theory is the first systematic dynamical treatment of the full crossover region., Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, 8 Postscript figures to be published in J. Chem. Phys

Physics - Chemical Physics - Abstract
The dynamics of spin-boson systems at very low temperatures has been studied using a real-time path-integral simulation technique which combines a stochastic Monte Carlo sampling over the quantum fluctuations with an exact treatment of the quasiclassical degrees of freedoms. To a large degree, this special technique circumvents the dynamical sign problem and allows the dynamics to be studied directly up to long real times in a numerically exact manner. This method has been applied to two important problems: (1) crossover from nonadiabatic to adiabatic behavior in electron transfer reactions, (2) the zero-temperature dynamics in the antiferromagnetic Kondo region 1/2

Physics - Chemical Physics - Abstract
A transferable tight-binding potential has been constructed for heteroatomic systems containing carbon and hydrogen. The electronic degree of freedom is treated explicitly in this potential using a small set of transferable parameters which has been fitted to small hydrocarbons and radicals. Transferability to other higher hydrocarbons were tested by comparison with ab initio calculations and experimental data. The potential can correctly reproduce changes in the electronic configuration as a function of the local bonding geometry around each carbon atom. This type of potential is well suited for computer simulations of covalently bonded systems in both gas-phase and condensed-phase systems., Comment: Submitted to: Chem. Phys. We present a detailed analysis of the mechanism of the primary charge separation process in bacterial photosynthesis using real-time path integrals. Direct computer simulations as well as an approximate analytical theory have been employed to map out the dynamics of the charge separation process in many regions of the parameter space relevant to bacterial photosynthesis. Two distinct parameter regions, one characteristic of sequential transfer and the other characteristic of superexchange, have been found to yield charge separation dynamics in agreement with experiments. Nonadiabatic theory provides accurate rate estimates for low-lying and very high-lying bacteriochlorophyll state energies, but it breaks down in between these two regimes., Comment: Submitted to: Chem. Law - Abstract
What can and should be the role of national civil courts in a European private legal order? This article explores the courts’ position against the backdrop of experiences in the ‘failed’ projects envisaging a European Civil Code and a European Constitution. It is held that rather than aspiring to find a lasting settlement in such static foundational texts, which courts should interpret and apply, the more dynamic interaction of national and European sources and institutions should be embraced. Descriptively, civil courts’ contributions can be accounted for in terms of ‘hybridization’, insofar as their judgments merge elements of EU law with rights and remedies under national private laws in a deliberative process that transcends national and European boundaries. Normatively, it is submitted that civil courts may be considered to perform a constitutional task insofar as they contribute to a dynamic process of polity-building in Europe.

Law - Abstract
This article introduces four contributions to a special issue on ‘judicial law-making in European private law’, which seeks to reconstruct and understand (aspects of) the evolving transformative role of the judiciary in light of the interaction between the national and European level. The paradigmatic examples of climate change litigation and judicial dialogue in consumer mortgage cases show how courts are asked to address sensitive political questions in cases brought by private parties in civil proceedings. A ‘utopian’ (self-)understanding of the judicial task explains and justifies how and to what extent judges may address such societal problems through private law, and at the same time transform private law itself.
