Vector DSPs, or SIMD DSPs, have received considerable attention recently, since they are considered to be a viable alternative for dedicated hardware in signal processing for multimedia and wireless communication. It is possible to construct dedicated hardware for IIR filters with a linear speedup, but because of their recursive nature these filters are considered difficult to map efficiently on a vector DSP. The IIR programs for vector DSPs presented so far have their speedup bounded by the order of the filter. In this paper we present a program that has a linear speed up, in the sense that doubling the vector size doubles the throughput. The program is a vectorization of the incremental block-state architecture. The speedup of this program is not bounded by the order of the filter, and even works for low order filters. Besides strided memory access, no special processor features are required by our program. As a proof of concept we implemented it on the Philips EVP processor.

The use of models to conceptualize systems is an important part of the process of building Cyber Physical Systems. While designing such systems, which are in general a multi-disciplinary activity, multiple designers are involved in the design decisions. Those decisions most likely are not captured and eventually forgotten after a period. The Design Framework is a visual modeling tool that aims to help architects and designers to documents the design rationales besides the design artifacts. It also helps them to collaborate to design a system together in a multidisciplinary environment. The Design Framework is at the level of a good prototype, but it is not ready for operational application by end-users in industry. One of the main issues with the Design Framework system is a sub-optimal code structure due to the lack of proper design and development approach. The assignment therefore is to reverse engineer the current design of the Design Framework and to come up with a new design. In order to maintain a system in use, presence of a test framework is necessary. Since the Design Framework is used in a multi-disciplinary environment, an improvement in the multi-user support of the system is also needed. In the first part of this report, the redesign of the Design Framework is discussed. To redesign the Design Frame-work, a number of refactoring techniques are applied. As a result, the code complexity is reduced, therefore the maintenance is increased. The second part of the assignment includes multi-user support and testability. The Design Framework manages the changes to design descriptions and maintains the history of the design artifacts. In this respect, it operates similar to version control systems. In the multi-user part of this report, the version controlling aspect of the Design Framework is described and synchronization of data for multi-user is elaborated. Finally some multi-user features are improved and developed. In the testability part of this report, the test support is described. A set of unit tests and end-to-end tests including the test for multi-user support is implemented. Provided test sets and the approaches used to setup test environment makes the Design Framework more stable and maintainable.

Océ-Technologies B.V., a member of the Canon Group, specializes in providing solutions for enterprise printing, large format printing, and production printing. Software is an important part of a modern printer. One of the tasks for inkjet-printer software is to transform input print data into timed sequences of firing commands for inkjet-nozzles. The output of this process is usually saved in a bitmap. To test a new transformation algorithm or to verify its implementation in a print-er, it is necessary to inspect the printer output bitmap. To do that, the bitmap should be converted into a viewable image. For wide-format printers, which are targeted by the project, the size of an image can reach tens of thousands of pixels in every dimension. Such images are hard or even impossible to display without applying special techniques. The goal of the project is to develop a virtual printer for the Research and Devel-opment Department of Océ. The virtual printer should include tools for the output bitmap conversion as well as for the display and inspection of images constructed from the bitmap. The conversion of a printer output bitmap is a printer-specific process. This cre-ates the need for a universal conversion tool that accommodates multiple Océ printer models. Additionally, the tool should extract the printing-flow information of an output bitmap and present the information in a generic format. Later, the information, together with constructed images, should be represented by the tool for image display and inspection (the viewer). For the design of the conversion tool we took the mediation approach. With that, we separated printer-specific parameters from the main algorithm. Such parame-ters were organized into an intermediate parameter layer, to which actual printer parameters can be easily translated. To store constructed images and the extracted printing-flow information, the TIFF image format was selected. Wide use of that format in the printing industry, together with its support of image data lossless compression, makes it suitable for the goals of the project. Additionally, this decision aims for the ease of visualiza-tion of the data converted from a printer output bitmap. The viewer tool design is based on a layered architectural style. This style enables component responsibility separation on different levels of abstraction. In other words, components, providing generic functionality (on a particular level of ab-straction), are reused in various components of a higher layer. For future mainte-nance, several levels of abstraction make it easier to understand the system and to find a place where a modification is needed. The virtual printer created provides Océ specialists with a means for advanced printer output bitmap conversion and detailed inspection of the artifacts. The viewer tool allows displaying and manipulating full-size images. With the tool, images can be displayed on various scales, navigated, compared using various criteria, e.g., presence of pixels in all compared images. For single-color images, the result of their combined multi-color printing can be modeled. Using the print-ing-flow data, it is possible to indicate when a pixel was printed, by which print-ing element, and the number of times the pixel was touched. The system has already been used in the Research and Development Department of Océ, and received positive feedback. In the future, the system can be extended with additional algorithms for image and printing-flow data visualization and extended with extra facilities advancing the end-user experience.

Global trends in the high technology sector depend of the delivered ASML lithography machines. The strict requirements and the tight deadlines influence directly the metrology software development. Because of these reasons software developers left sometimes some software design principles unattended in favor of quick implementation of new features, which resulted in increasing the technical debt. This report describes the design and implementation of a proof of concept domain model for the future metrology software, taking a realistic example as business case. The domain-driven design (DDD) is used to create the domain model. It is the core of the product, which express the metrology behavior, relations, its entities, and their attributes. The Onion architecture principles emphases also the importance of the domain model and puts it in the center of the implementation. In that way the domain model is isolated from the environment and infrastructure, which increases the software maintainability. Moreover, the calculation and the control logic is split, which prevents the overlap in the daily work between the functional engineers and software engineers.

Philips Healthcare is committed to continuously improving their medical systems and services. Following the company mission, the Interventional X-Ray (iXR) unit within Philips Healthcare constantly enhances its products with new functionalities. The correctness, availability, and reliability, which are the top quality concerns of the products, should not be compromised by this increase in complexity. For this reason, there is a strong need to have detailed insights on the product behavior throughout the entire product lifecycle. The Automated Testing team developed an application named ProMise that analyzes event log data. However, it has several constraints that limit its usability: • It analyzes the event log files of only one iXR system family, Allura. • Its analysis result is used by the R&D department only • It is a poorly extendable and maintainable application. Implementing new requirements is a difficult and time consuming process because its implementation contains Allura knowledge. This report describes a new concept for the ProMise application that is composed of two Business Intelligence frameworks, Data Integration (DI) and Analysis Framework. The main goal of the project was to deliver a DI Framework that can be easily extended with new functionalities and medical systems.

As of the writing of this report, Network Virtualization is a domain undergoing innovation and development. It is a domain concerned with the networking aspect of cloud computing, whose popularity has skyrocketed in the previous years. The Grid computing community is investigating cloud computing services, adding their own priorities in what they expect from network virtualization. This report describes the design and implementation of a solution for network provisioning in cloud infrastructures, which tries to combine open-source cloud platforms with network topology management and hardware configuration. The project was the final project for the Stan Ackerman's Institute Software Technology program, Eindhoven University of Technology, and was performed on behalf of Nikhef, a Grid infrastructure provider. This report is of technical nature and targets an audience familiar with object-oriented software and networking. For an elaboration of the needs the system fulfills, readers should refer to Chapters 2-3. The design and deployment of the system is described in Chapters 4-6. Lastly, for results and conclusions, the reader should refer to Chapter 8.
