Including footprint analysis in a course on energy simultaneously provides students with an understanding of this tool and a quantitative guide to approaches that address climate change. Quasi-local energies for constantly accelerating observers in Ba\~nados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ), Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes are derived. The energies are expressed in terms of acceleration, cosmological constant, and area, quantities measurable by the observers. In a (1+1)-dimensional midi-superspace model for gravitational plane waves, a flat space-time condition is imposed with constraints derived from null Killing vectors. Solutions to a straightforward regularization of these constraints have diverging length and volume expectation values. Physically acceptable solutions in the kinematic Hilbert space are obtained from the original constraint by multiplying with a power of the volume operator and by a similar modification of the Hamiltonian constraint, which is used in a regularization of the constraints. The solutions of the modified Killing constraint have finite expectation values of geometric quantities. Further, the expectation value of the original Killing constraint vanishes, but its moment is non-vanishing. As the power of the volume grows the moment of the original constraint grows, while the moments of volume and length both decrease. Thus, these states provide possible kinematic states for flat space, with fluctuations. As a consequence of the regularization of operators the quantum uncertainty relations between geometric quantities such as length and its conjugate momentum do not reflect naive expectations from the classical Poisson bracket relations., Comment: 43 pages

Research during the last decade demonstrates that effects originating on the Planck scale are currently being tested in multiple observational contexts. In this review we discuss quantum gravity phenomenological models and their possible links to loop quantum gravity. Particle frameworks, including kinematic models, broken and deformed Poincar\'e symmetry, non-commutative geometry, relative locality and generalized uncertainty principle, and field theory frameworks, including Lorentz violating operators in effective field theory and non-commutative field theory, are discussed. The arguments relating loop quantum gravity to models with modified dispersion relations are reviewed, as well as, arguments supporting the preservation of local Lorentz invariance. The phenomenology related to loop quantum cosmology is briefly reviewed, with a focus on possible effects that might be tested in the near future. As the discussion makes clear, there remains much interesting work to do in establishing the connection between the fundamental theory of loop quantum gravity and these specific phenomenological models, in determining observational consequences of the characteristic aspects of loop quantum gravity, and in further refining current observations. The phenomenology for the deep spatial geometry of loop quantum gravity is discussed. In the context of a simple model of an atom of space, it is shown how purely combinatorial structures can affect observations. The angle operator is used to develop a model of angular corrections to local, continuum flat-space 3-geometries. The physical effects involve neither breaking of local Lorentz invariance nor Planck scale suppression, but rather reply on only the combinatorics of SU(2) recouping theory. The polarized Gowdy model in terms of Ashtekar-Barbero variables is further reduced by including the Killing equations for plane-fronted parallel gravitational waves with parallel rays. The resulting constraint algebra, including one constraint derived from the Killing equations in addition to the standard ones of General Relativity, are shown to form a set of first-class constraints. Using earlier work by Banerjee and Date the constraints are expressed in terms of classical quantities that have an operator equivalent in Loop Quantum Gravity, making space-times with pp-waves accessible to loop quantization techniques., Comment: 14 pages

We investigate using plane fronted gravitational wave space-times as model systems to study loop quantization techniques and dispersion relations. In this classical analysis, we start with planar symmetric space-times in the real connection formulation. We reduce via Dirac constraint analysis to a final form with one canonical pair and one constraint, equivalent to the metric and Einstein equations of plane-fronted with parallel rays waves. Due to the symmetries and use of special coordinates general covariance is broken. However, this allows us to simply express the constraints of the consistent system. A recursive construction of Dirac brackets results in non-local brackets, analogous to those of self-dual fields, for the triad variables chosen in this approach., Comment: v2: Matches published version, up to minor stylistic changes

We present a computational tool that can be used to obtain the "spatial" homology groups of a causal set. Localisation in the causal set is seeded by an inextendible antichain, which is the analog of a spacelike hypersurface, and a one parameter family of nerve simplicial complexes is constructed by "thickening" this antichain. The associated homology groups can then be calculated using existing homology software, and their behaviour studied as a function of the thickening parameter. Earlier analytical work showed that for an inextendible antichain in a causal set which can be approximated by a globally hyperbolic spacetime region, there is a one parameter sub-family of these simplicial complexes which are homological to the continuum, provided the antichain satisfies certain conditions. Using causal sets that are approximated by a set of 2d spacetimes our numerical analysis suggests that these conditions are generically satisfied by inextendible antichains. In both 2d and 3d simulations, as the thickening parameter is increased, the continuum homology groups tend to appear as the first region in which the homology is constant, or "stable" above the discreteness scale. Below this scale, the homology groups fluctuate rapidly as a function of the thickening parameter. Modified dispersion relations from effective field theory are shown to alter the Chandrasekhar mass limit. At exceptionally high densities, the modifications affect the pressure of a degenerate electron gas and can increase or decrease the mass limit, depending on the sign of the modifications. These changes to the mass limit are unlikely to be relevant for the astrophysics of white dwarf or neutron stars due to well-known dynamical instabilities that occur at lower densities. A class of deformations of the q-quantum gravity loop algebra is shown to be incompatible with the combinatorics of Temperley-Lieb recoupling theory with deformation parameter at a root of unity. One obtains Bell's inequalities if one posits a hypothetical joint probability distribution, or {\it measure}, whose marginals yield the probabilities produced by the spin measurements in question. The existence of a joint measure is in turn equivalent to a certain causality condition known as ``screening off''. We show that if one assumes, more generally, a joint {\it quantal measure}, or ``decoherence functional'', one obtains instead an analogous inequality weaker by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$. The proof of this ``Tsirel'son inequality'' is geometrical and rests on the possibility of associating a Hilbert space to any strongly positive quantal measure. These results lead both to a {\it question}: ``Does a joint measure follow from some quantal analog of `screening off'?'', and to the {\it observation} that non-contextual hidden variables are viable in histories-based quantum mechanics, even if they are excluded classically., Comment: 38 pages, TeX. An important question that discrete approaches to quantum gravity must address is how continuum features of spacetime can be recovered from the discrete substructure. Here, we examine this question within the causal set approach to quantum gravity, where the substructure replacing the spacetime continuum is a locally finite partial order. A new topology on causal sets using ``thickened antichains'' is constructed. This topology is then used to recover the homology of a globally hyperbolic spacetime from a causal set which faithfully embeds into it at sufficiently high sprinkling density. This implies a discrete-continuum correspondence which lends support to the fundamental conjecture or ``Hauptvermutung'' of causal set theory., Comment: The statement of a lemma has been simplified and the proof rewritten. Within the causal set approach to quantum gravity, a discrete analog of a spacelike region is a set of unrelated elements, or an antichain. In the continuum approximation of the theory, a moment-of-time hypersurface is well represented by an inextendible antichain. We construct a richer structure corresponding to a thickening of this antichain containing non-trivial geometric and topological information. We find that covariant observables can be associated with such thickened antichains and transitions between them, in classical stochastic growth models of causal sets. This construction highlights the difference between the covariant measure on causal set cosmology and the standard sum-over-histories approach: the measure is assigned to completed histories rather than to histories on a restricted spacetime region. The resulting re-phrasing of the sum-over-histories may be fruitful in other approaches to quantum gravity., Comment: Revtex, 12 pages, 2 figures

Two theories of special relativity with an additional invariant scale, "doubly special relativity" (DSR), are tested with calculations of particle process kinematics. Using the Judes-Visser modified conservation laws, thresholds are studied in both theories. In contrast to some linear approximations, which allow for particle processes forbidden in special relativity, both the Amelino-Camelia and Maguejo-Smolin frameworks allow no additional processes. The Lorentzian Hamiltonian constraint is solved for isotropic loop quantum cosmology coupled to a massless scalar field. As in the Euclidean case, the discreteness of quantum geometry removes the classical singularity from the quantum Friedmann models. In spite of the absence of the classical singularity, a modified DeWitt initial condition is incompatible with a late-time smooth behavior. Further, the smooth behavior is recovered only for positive or negatives times but not both. An important feature, which is shared with the Euclidean case, is a minimal initial energy of the order of the Planck energy required for the system to evolve dynamically. Using a form of modified dispersion relations derived in the context of quantum geometry, we investigate limits set by current observations on potential corrections to Lorentz invariance. We use a phenomological model in which there are separate parameters for photons, leptons, and hadrons. Constraints on these parameters are derived using thresholds for the processes of photon stability, photon absorption, vacuum Cerenkov radiation, pion stability, and the GZK cutoff. Within the context of loop quantum gravity there are several operators which measure geometry quantities. This work examines two of these operators, volume and angle, to study quantum geometry at a single spin network vertex - ``an atom of geometry.'' Several aspects of the angle operator are examined in detail including minimum angles, level spacing, and the distribution of angles. The high spin limit of the volume operator is also studied for monochromatic vertices. The results show that demands of the correct scaling relations between area and volume and requirements of the expected behavior of angles in three dimensional flat space require high-valence vertices with total spins of approximately 10^20., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

We present an argument that, for a large class of possible dynamics, a canonical quantization of gravity will satisfy the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy-area relation. This result holds for temperatures low compared to the Planck temperature and for boundaries with areas large compared to Planck area. We also relate our description, in terms of a grand canonical ensemble, to previous geometric entropy calculations using area ensembles., Comment: 6 pages

Using the quantum Hamiltonian for a gravitational system with boundary, we find the partition function and derive the resulting thermodynamics. The Hamiltonian is the boundary term required by functional differentiability of the action for Lorentzian general relativity. In this model, states of quantum geometry are represented by spin networks. We show that the statistical mechanics of the model reduces to that of a simple non-interacting gas of particles with spin. Using both canonical and grand canonical descriptions, we investigate two temperature regimes determined by the fundamental constant in the theory, m. In the high temperature limit (kT > m), the model is thermodynamically stable. For low temperatures (kT < m) and for macroscopic areas of the bounding surface, the entropy is proportional to area (with logarithmic correction), providing a simple derivation of the Bekenstein-Hawking result. By comparing our results to known semiclassical relations we are able to fix the fundamental scale. The Hamiltonian of a gravitational system defined in a region with boundary is quantized. The classical Hamiltonian, and starting point for the regularization, is required by functional differentiablity of the Hamiltonian constraint. The boundary term is the quasilocal energy of the system and becomes the ADM mass in asymptopia. The quantization is carried out within the framework of canonical quantization using spin networks. The result is a gauge invariant, well-defined operator on the Hilbert space induced from the state space on the whole spatial manifold. The spectrum is computed. An alternate form of the operator, with the correct naive classical limit, but requiring a restriction on the Hilbert space, is also defined. Spin networks, essentially labeled graphs, are ``good quantum numbers'' for the quantum theory of geometry. These structures encompass a diverse range of techniques which may be used in the quantum mechanics of finite dimensional systems, gauge theory, and knot theory. Though accessible to undergraduates, spin network techniques are buried in more complicated formulations. In this paper a diagrammatic method, simple but rich, is introduced through an association of 2 by 2 matrices to diagrams. This spin network diagrammatic method offers new perspectives on the quantum mechanics of angular momentum, group theory, knot theory, and even quantum geometry. Inspired by the spin geometry theorem, two operators are defined which measure angles in the quantum theory of geometry. One operator assigns a discrete angle to every pair of surfaces passing through a single vertex of a spin network. This operator, which is effectively the cosine of an angle, is defined via a scalar product density operator and the area operator. The second operator assigns an angle to two ``bundles'' of edges incident to a single vertex. While somewhat more complicated than the earlier geometric operators, there are a number of properties that are investigated including the full spectrum of several operators and, using results of the spin geometry theorem, conditions to ensure that semiclassical geometry states replicate classical angles., Comment: v1: 20 pages, 23 figures v2: changes in presentation and regularization (final results unchanged). Chern-Simons gauge theory, since its inception as a topological quantum field theory, has proved to be a rich source of understanding for knot invariants. In this work the theory is used to explore the definition of the expectation value of a network of Wilson lines - an embedded graph invariant. Using a slight generalization of the variational method, lowest-order results for invariants for arbitrary valence graphs are derived; gauge invariant operators are introduced; and some higher order results are found. The method used here provides a Vassiliev-type definition of graph invariants which depend on both the embedding of the graph and the group structure of the gauge theory. It is found that one need not frame individual vertices. Though, without a global projection of the graph, there is an ambiguity in the relation of the decomposition of distinct vertices. We study Einstein gravity in a finite spatial region. By requiring a well-defined variational principle, we identify all local boundary conditions, derive surface observables, and compute their algebra. The observables arise as induced surface terms, which contribute to a non-vanishing Hamiltonian. Unlike the asymptotically flat case, we find that there are an infinite number of surface observables. An approach to quantum cosmology, relying on strengths of both canonical and path integral formalisms, is applied to the cosmological model, Bianchi type IX. Physical quantum states are constructed on the maximal slice of the cosmological history. A path integral is derived which evolves observables off the maximal slice. The discrete picture of geometry arising from the loop representation of quantum gravity can be extended by a quantum deformation. The operators for area and volume defined in the q-deformation of the theory are partly diagonalized. The eigenstates are expressed in terms of q-deformed spin networks. The q-deformation breaks some of the degeneracy of the volume operator so that trivalent spin-networks have non-zero volume. These computations are facilitated by use of a technique based on the recoupling theory of SU(2)_q, which simplifies the construction of these and other operators through diffeomorphism invariant regularization procedures., Comment: 16 pages, 35 Postscript figures, uses epsfig.sty

We describe a deformation of the observable algebra of quantum gravity in which the loop algebra is extended to framed loops. This allows an alternative nonperturbative quantization which is suitable for describing a phase of quantum gravity characterized by states which are normalizable in the measure of Chern-Simons theory. The deformation parameter, q, depends on the cosmological constant. The Mandelstam identities are extended to a set of relations which are governed by the Kauffman bracket so that the spin network basis is deformed to a basis of SU(2)q spin networks. Corrections to the actions of operators in non-perturbative quantum gravity may be readily computed using recoupling theory; the example of the area observable is treated here. Finally, eigenstates of the q-deformed Wilson loops are constructed, which may make possible the construction of a q-deformed connection representation through an inverse transform., Comment: 12 pages, many figures

Histories and measures for quantum cosmology are investigated through a quantization of the Bianchi IX cosmology using path integral techniques. The result, derived in the context of Ashtekar variables, is compared with earlier work.
