NaI(Tl) based scintillation detectors have become a staple in the field of direct dark matter searches, with the DAMA-LIBRA experiment being the standout for its reported observation of an annually modulating WIMP-like signal which is in direct contrast with other results. In order to accurately calibrate the energies of WIMP-induced nuclear recoil signals, precise measurements of the quenching factor of the NaI crystals are essential for each of these experiments, as it is well established that electron recoils and nuclear recoils have dissimilar scintillation light yields. In this contribution, we present first preliminary results of an ongoing systematic study that has been carried out by the COSINUS collaboration and Duke University to measure the quenching factor of Na recoils. Five ultra-pure NaI crystals, manufactured by the Shanghai Institute for Ceramics, each of which have varying Tl dopant concentrations, were irradiated with a mono-energetic neutron beam at the Triangle Universities National Laboratory, North Carolina, USA to extract the quenching factor values in the low recoil energies of 1-30keV$_{nr}$.

For over twenty-five years the DAMA/LIBRA experiment has reported an annual modulation signal that is consistent with a dark matter explanation. This signal is, currently, in tension with the null results observed by other searches that utilize different target detectors. The COSINUS experiment will perform a model-independent cross-check of the DAMA/LIBRA result by using the same target material, NaI crystals, operated as scintillating calorimeters. By measuring both temperature and light the NaI crystals in COSINUS will be able to distinguish between electron and nuclear recoils on an event-by-event basis. However, background events induced by cosmic-rays, environmental radioactivity or the intrinsic contamination of the materials used in the crystal, shielding and infrastructure can pose an issue to any analysis and must be fully understood. We report on the status of the development of the simulation for an active water Cherenkov muon veto, as well as the results of the beginning radiogenic material screening.

The increasing statistical significance of the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal is a cause for tension in the field of dark matter direct detection. The COSINUS experiment aims at a model-independent cross-check of the DAMA/LIBRA signal claim, using NaI crystals operated as cryogenic scintillating calorimeters at millikelvin temperatures. Such a setup enables measurement of phonon and scintillation light signals via Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) and allows particle discrimination on an event-by-event basis. The non-standard properties of NaI cause an obstacle when attaching a TES directly onto the surface of the crystal. This can be overcome with the ``remoTES'' design, where the TES is attached to an external wafer crystal. We present the results from a first successful operation of NaI and other crystals as cryogenic calorimeters with the remoTES design.

Studies were conducted on the effect of pruning time, host age, urediniospore release and weather parameters on the incidence and intensity of mulberry leaf rust (Peridiopsora mori). Rust severity significantly increased with increasing shoot age, irrespective of pruning time. Maximum disease severity was observed in plants pruned during the third week of October, and minimum severity in plants pruned during last week of November. Apparent infection rate was higher in younger shoots. Infection rate was higher in plants pruned during the last week of November. Urediniospore release was influenced by prevailing climatic conditions. A higher rate of spore release was noticed during sunny days. Maximum spore release was found between 12.00 h and 14.00 h. Spore release was positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with relative humidity. Rust severity (34.97%) was higher in January and least (1.03%) during May. Rust severity was negatively correlated with both temperature and rainfall. An exponential model was developed for the prediction of rust severity which was accurate up to 96.60%. Background: Weighted blanket is an emerging non-pharmacotherapy for sleep disorders, but its effect on sleep among relatively healthy adults with insomnia remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate whether weighted blankets could better improve sleep quality and sleep-related symptoms among adults with insomnia., Methods: In a prospective, pilot randomized controlled trial conducted in three tertiary hospitals in China, participants with clinical insomnia were randomized (1:1) to receive weighted blanket intervention or normal blanket intervention for 1 month by random-number tables. The primary outcomes were sleep quality assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and insomnia severity assessed with Insomnia Severity Index. Subjective outcomes were measured at baseline, 1 week, and 1-month post-intervention. Sleep was also objectively monitored by actigraphy. We did analysis by intention to treat., Results: A total of 102 participants were randomly assigned to receive weighted blanket intervention (n = 52) or normal blanket intervention (n = 50). 95 (93.1%) participants completed the follow-up, and 7 (6.9%) participants dropped out of the study. The weighted blanket group had significant improvements in sleep quality compared to the normal blanket group after 1 month of intervention (changes in the mean [SD] of PSQI score: -4.1 [4.1] vs. -2.0 [3.2], P = 0.006). Similar results were observed for daytime sleepiness, stress, anxiety, fatigue, and bodily pain (all P < 0.05). Recordings from actigraphy showed a decrease in the mean (SD) of the number of awakenings in weighted blanket group (-1.4 [9.5]) and an increase in normal blanket group (+ 1.0 [7.9]) (P = 0.280). Background: Criminal legal system-involved individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) experience more challenges accessing mental health and other community services than those without a history of criminal legal system involvement. A formative qualitative study was conducted to explore feasibility and acceptability and inform the adaptation of a mental health peer navigation intervention for individuals with SMI reentering the community after jail incarceration., Methods: In-depth qualitative interviews and focus-group discussions were conducted with mental health peer navigators (i.e., certified mental health peer support specialists, peer recovery coaches) and individuals with lived experience of SMI and criminal legal system involvement (N = 20 total). Data were analyzed using applied thematic analysis., Results: Four major themes emerged: (1) Feasibility and acceptability of peer-provided services: all participants reported that peer navigation services would be feasible and acceptable for individuals with SMI reentering the community after jail incarceration; (2) roles of peer navigators in addressing barriers to care: peers can address barriers to care experienced during community reentry and contribute towards service linkage/engagement; (3) shared identity and combating stigma: having a shared identity with peer navigators may minimize the impact of stigma and make it easier for clients with multiple marginalized identities to seek support; and (4) peer navigator skills and recommendations for the planned program: essential peer navigation skills include authenticity, reliability, active listening, advocacy, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and empathy. Recommendations for the planned program include initiating services while clients are in custody, emphasizing the voluntary nature of peer support, knowing the limits of a peer navigation intervention, and offering support for peer navigators while on the job., Conclusion: Participants saw peer navigation services for individuals with SMI with criminal legal system involvement as potentially feasible and acceptable. Such programs may enhance their impact by offering supportive supervision, emphasizing the voluntary nature of the service, and acknowledging recovery as a self-directed endeavor., (© 2024. The fluorinated alcohols, (CF 3 ) 3 COH (R F9 OH) and (CF 3 ) 2 MeCOH (R F6 OH), react with W(NR) 2 Cy 2 (Cy=Cyclohexyl; R=2,6-diisopropylphenyl or 1-adamantyl) in C 6 D 6 at 55 °C to give cyclohexylidene complexes. Traditional routes to terminal alkylidene complexes (neopentylidene or neophylidene) have used either triflic acid or HCl (rarely), but relatively weak fluorinated acids are sufficient and active bisalkoxide catalysts are therefore prepared directly. An α hydrogen abstraction reaction to give a cyclohexylidene complex from a biscyclohexyl complex appears to be as facile as α hydrogen abstraction to give a neopentylidene or neophylidene ligand, but isomerization of a cyclohexene formed through β hydrogen abstraction is also a possibility. The OR F9 ligands can be replaced readily with dimethylpyrrolide (Me 2 Pyr) or other more basic alkoxides. Background: Osteoporosis (OP), affecting millions around the globe, is a prevalent degenerative condition of the bones characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) and an increase in bone fragility. A novel anthropometric measure, the Body Roundness Index (BRI), provides a more accurate assessment of body fat distribution compared to traditional metrics. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study aims to explore the relationship between BRI and total BMD in U.S. adults aged 20 and above., Methods: Data from NHANES (2011-2018) were examined, encompassing 9,295 participants following exclusions. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was employed to measure BMD. BRI was calculated using waist circumference (WC) and height. The study accounted for variables such as demographic traits, physical exam results, lab test findings, and survey responses. Weighted multivariable linear regression models and smooth curve fitting methods were utilized to assess the relationship between BRI and total BMD., Results: The research found a notable inverse relationship between BRI and total BMD. In the model with full adjustments, an increase of one unit in BRI was linked to a 0.0313 g/cm 2 reduction in total BMD ( P < 0.0001). Moreover, an inflection point was identified at BRI = 9.5229, where each one-unit rise in BRI beyond this threshold corresponded to a more substantial decrease in total BMD (0.0363 g/cm 2 ). Analysis by subgroups revealed that this negative association was consistent across most demographic and health-related categories., Conclusions: The results demonstrate a notable inverse relationship between BRI and total BMD, indicating that a higher BRI could be associated with lower BMD and a potentially greater risk of developing OP. A 7-tungstabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane complex forms slowly upon addition of cyclohexene to the ethylene complex, W(NAr)(OSiPh 3 ) 2 (C 2 H 4 ), at 22 °C. A single-crystal X-ray study showed its structure to be closest to a square pyramid (τ = 0.23). At 22 °C, loss of cyclohexene or ring contraction of the 7-tungstabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane complex is slow. Above ∼80 °C, cyclohexene is ejected to give W(NAr)(OSiPh 3 ) 2 (C 2 H 4 ), but a sufficient amount of 7-tungstabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane complex remains in the presence of cyclohexene and the ring contracts to yield methylenecyclohexane and a methylidene complex or ethylene and a cyclohexylidene complex. Other complexes that have been observed include an 8-tungstabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane complex formed from 1,7-octadiene, a 7-tungstabicyclo[4.2.0]octane complex (formed from a methylidene complex and cyclohexene), and a methylenecyclohexane complex. 13 C-Labeling studies show that the exo-methylene group in methylenecyclohexane and the α positions in the 8-tungstabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane come from ethylene. An alternative ring contraction of a tungstacyclopentane made from two molecules of cyclohexene cannot be excluded when concentrations of ethylene are low. A cyclohexylidene complex could also form from two cyclohexenes via a newly proposed "alkyl/allyl" mechanism. The results reported here are the first experimental confirmations that a tungstacyclopentane can ring-contract thermally at a substituted WC α position to form a tungstacyclobutane and therefore metathesis-active alkylidenes.

Liposomes carrying differential charges have been extensively studied for their role in stimulating dendritic cells (DCs), major antigen-presenting cells, known to serve as a pivotal bridge between innate and adaptive immunity. However, the impact of the differentially charged liposomes on activating DCs remains to be understood. In this study, we have investigated the impact of 1,2-distearoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC)-based neutral, anionic, and cationic liposomes on the uptake, immunostimulation, and intracellular fate in mouse bone-marrow-derived DCs. We observed that liposomes could induce phenotypic maturation of DCs by inducing the expression of costimulatory molecules (CD40 and CD86) and production of cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-12,and nitric oxide. Interestingly, admixing monophosphoryl lipid A with charged liposomes further enhances the expression of the costimulatory molecules and production of cytokines, with preferential activation by positively charged liposomes. Fluorometric analysis using a pH-sensitive dye and flow-cytometry-based pathway inhibition assays revealed that cationic liposomes were taken up more efficiently by DCs through endocytosis and transported to neutral compartments for further processing, whereas anionic and neutral liposomes were inclined to accumulate in acidic compartments. Herein, we describe the general design, synthesis, characterization, and biological activity of new multitargeting Pt(IV) prodrugs that combine antitumor cisplatin and dasatinib, a potent inhibitor of Src kinase. These prodrugs exhibit impressive antiproliferative and anti-invasive activities in tumor cell lines in both two-dimensional (2D) monolayers of cell cultures and three-dimensional (3D) spheroids. We show that the cisplatin moiety and dasatinib in the investigated Pt(IV) complexes are both involved in the mechanism of action in MCF7 breast cancer cells and act synergistically. Thus, combining dasatinib and cisplatin into one molecule, compared to using individual components in a mix, may bring several advantages, such as significantly higher activity in cancer cell lines and higher selectivity for tumor cells. Most importantly, Pt(IV)-dasatinib complexes hold significant promise for potential anticancer therapies by targeting epithelial-mesenchymal transition, thus preventing the spread and metastasis of tumors, a value unachievable by a simple combination of both individual components.

Hydrogels possess unique polymer networks that offer flexibility/stretchability, high ionic conductivity, and resistance to electrolyte leakage, making them suitable for deformable energy storage devices. Endowing the mechanical functionality of the hydrogel electrolytes focus on either enhancing the stretchability or the toughness. However, the stretchability and the toughness are generally a trade-off that the stretchable gels are intrinsically prone to damage and sensitive to notches and cracks. Here, the regulating strategies on the hydrogel's mechanical properties are provided to develop the designated hydrogel electrolyte, where different polymeric network structures are constructed, including single network structures, semi-interpenetrating network structures, and interpenetrating dual-network structures. A comprehensive comparison of these polymer network structures is conducted to evaluate their mechanical stretchability and toughness. Designing super-tough and super-stretchable hydrogels based on specific application requirements can be realized by striking a balance by regulating the hydrogel structure. In specific, incorporating semi-interpenetrating networks significantly can enhance stretchability to achieve a break elongation up to 1300%, while the interpenetrating dual-networks can largely improve the toughness to realize the extraordinary fracture toughness of 6.843 kJ m -2 . We present a mathematical model that explores the progression of Alzheimer's disease, with a particular focus on the involvement of disease-related proteins and astrocytes. Our model consists of a coupled system of differential equations that delineates the dynamics of amyloid beta plaques, amyloid beta protein, tau protein, and astrocytes. Amyloid beta plaques can be considered fibrils that depend on both the plaque size and time. We change our mathematical model to a temporal system by applying an integration operation with respect to the plaque size. Theoretical analysis including existence, uniqueness, positivity, and boundedness is performed in our model. We extend our mathematical model by adding two populations, namely prion protein and amyloid beta-prion complex. We characterize the system dynamics by locating biologically feasible steady states and their local stability analysis for both models. The characterization of the proposed model can help inform in advancing our understanding of the development of Alzheimer's disease as well as its complicated dynamics. We investigate the global stability analysis around the interior equilibrium point by constructing a suitable Lyapunov function. The energy barrier to dissociate neutral water has been lowered by the differential intermediate binding on the charge-modulated metal centers of Co 85 Mo 15 sheets supported on Ni-foam (NF), where the overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS) is only 50±9 mV at -10 mA cm -2 . It has a turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.18 s -1 , mass activity of 13.2 A g -1 at -200 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and produces 16 ml H 2 h -1 at -300 mV vs. RHE, more than double that of 20 % Pt/C. The Mo δ+ and Co δ- sites adsorb OH*, and H*, respectively, and the electron injection from Co to H-O-H cleaves the O-H bond to form the Mo-OH* intermediate. Operando spectral analyses indicate a weak H-bonded network for facilitating the H 2 O*/OH* transport, and a potential-induced reversal of the charge density from Co to the more electronegative Mo, because of the electron withdrawing Co-H* and Mo-OH* species. Co 85 Mo 15 /NF can also drive the complete electrolysis of neutral water at only 1.73 V (10 mA cm -2 ). Background: There are 10 million admissions to U.S. prisons and jails each year. More than half of those admitted have mental health problems. The goal of this article is to inform: (1) implementation of evidence-based mental health treatments in prisons and jails, an important effort that needs more evidence to guide it; (2) psychotherapy and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) training efforts, especially in low-resource settings., Methods: A randomized hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial of group IPT for major depressive disorder (MDD) in state prisons found that IPT increased rates of MDD remission and lowered posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms relative to prison treatment as usual. The trial used prison counselors, only some of whom had prior psychotherapy training/experience, to deliver IPT. IPT treatment adherence was high (96%), but trial training and supervision were too costly to be scalable outside the trial. The current article reports results from a planned qualitative analysis of 460 structured implementation and supervision documents in that trial to describe training and supervision processes and lessons learned, inform training recommendations, and facilitate future work to optimize training and supervision for under-resourced settings., Results: Themes identified in implementation and supervision process notes reflected: work on psychotherapy basics (reflective listening, focusing on emotions, open-ended questions, specific experiences), IPT case conceptualization (forming a conceptualization, what is and is not therapeutic work, structure and limit setting, structure vs. flexibility), IPT techniques (enhancing social support, role plays, communication analysis), psychotherapy processes (alliance repair, managing group processes), and managing difficult situations (avoidance, specific clients, challenging work settings). Counselors were receptive to feedback; some relied on study supervisors for support in managing stressful prison working conditions., Conclusions: Findings can be used to make future training and supervision more efficient. Based on our results, we recommend that initial and refresher training focus on IPT case conceptualization, steps for addressing each IPT problem area, and reflective listening. We also recommend supervision through at least counselors' first two rounds of groups. More low-cost, scalable training methods are needed to get mental health treatment to individuals who need it most, who are often served in challenging, low-resource settings such as prisons. Background: The primary purpose of this review is to synthesise the effect of strategies aiming to sustain the implementation of evidenced-based interventions (EBIs) targeting key health behaviours associated with chronic disease (i.e. physical inactivity, poor diet, harmful alcohol use, and tobacco smoking) in clinical and community settings. The field of implementation science is bereft of an evidence base of effective sustainment strategies, and as such, this review will provide important evidence to advance the field of sustainability research., Methods: This systematic review protocol is reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist. Methods will follow Cochrane gold-standard review methodology. The search will be undertaken across multiple databases, adapting filters previously developed by the research team, data screening and extraction will be performed in duplicate, strategies will be coded using an adapted sustainability-explicit taxonomy, and evidence will be synthesised using appropriate methods (i.e. meta-analytic following Cochrane or non-meta-analytic following SWiM guidelines). We will include any randomised controlled study that targets any staff or volunteers delivering interventions in clinical or community settings. Studies which report on any objective or subjective measure of the sustainment of a health prevention policy, practice, or programme within any of the eligible settings will be included. Article screening, data extraction, risk of bias, and quality assessment will be performed independently by two review authors. Risk of bias will be assessed using Version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials (RoB 2). A random-effect meta-analysis will be conducted to estimate the pooled effect of sustainment strategies separately by setting (i.e. clinical and community). Sub-group analyses will be undertaken to explore possible causes of statistical heterogeneity and may include the following: time period, single or multi-strategy, type of setting, and type of intervention. Differences between sub-groups will be statistically compared., Discussion/conclusion: This will be the first systematic review to determine the effect of strategies designed to support sustainment on sustaining the implementation of EBIs in clinical and community settings. The findings of this review will directly inform the design of future sustainability-focused implementation trials. Background: Globally, individuals with mental illness get in contact with the law at a greater rate than the general population. The goal of this review was to identify and describe: (1) effectiveness of mental health interventions for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) who have criminal legal involvement; (2) additional outcomes targeted by these interventions; (3) settings/contexts where interventions were delivered; and (4) barriers and facilitating factors for implementing these interventions., Methods: A systematic review was conducted to summarize the mental health treatment literature for individuals with serious mental illness with criminal legal involvement (i.e., bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder). Searches were conducted using PsychINFO, Embase, ProQuest, PubMed, and Web of Science. Articles were eligible if they were intervention studies among criminal legal involved populations with a mental health primary outcome and provided description of the intervention., Results: A total of 13 eligible studies were identified. Tested interventions were categorized as cognitive/behavioral, community-based, interpersonal (IPT), psychoeducational, or court-based. Studies that used IPT-based interventions reported clinically significant improvements in mental health symptoms and were also feasible and acceptable. Other interventions demonstrated positive trends favoring the mental health outcomes but did not show statistically and clinically significant changes. All studies reported treatment outcomes, with only 8 studies reporting both treatment and implementation outcomes., Conclusion: Our findings highlight a need for more mental health research in this population. Objective: Tens of millions of individuals with mental health problems interact with the U.S. criminal legal system (including 911, police, jail detention and sentences, courts, and probation and parole) each year. The authors sought to identify recommended mental health practices for criminal legal system-involved individuals and report the percentages of U.S. counties and of the U.S. population living in counties in which each recommended practice is present., Methods: Recommended practices for criminal legal-involved individuals with mental health problems were identified from meta-analyses, reviews, and best practice recommendations. Up to four respondents per county (i.e., jail, probation, community mental health, and community substance use treatment administrators) from 950 counties were asked whether each recommended practice was present for criminal legal-involved individuals. Weighted percentages of U.S. counties using recommended practices and of the U.S. population living in counties with each recommended practice are reported., Results: Fifty-nine recommended practices, including general mental health approaches (e.g., permanent supportive housing, Medicaid continuity) and diagnosis-specific mental health treatments (including medications and psychotherapies), were identified. Weighted data from respondents (N=791 from 519 counties) indicated that each recommended practice was present for criminal legal-involved individuals in only 21.9%-43.0% of U.S. counties., Conclusions: These results inform implementation efforts by indicating the presence of recommended care practices for criminal legal-involved individuals with mental health problems in counties nationwide. Because supportive housing, access to Medicaid reactivation in jails, and psychosocial interventions for physical pain have low presence but high importance for recovery, implementation efforts might first target these approaches., Competing Interests: The authors report no financial relationships with commercial interests.

Background: The Bellary district in Karnataka, rich in mineral resources, is a major mining industry, but prolonged exposure to mining can lead to health hazards. The study aims to assess the genotoxic impact of mining pollutants on mine workers using the micro-nucleus (MN) assay., Setting and Design: Cross-sectional study., Materials and Methods: A total of 250 individuals (198 males and 52 females) working in mining areas were examined, and their oral findings were recorded in a proforma. For the micro-nucleus assay, buccal smears from 30 individuals working in mining areas with habits, 30 individuals working in mining areas without habits, and 30 individuals residing in non-mining areas (control group) were selected. Smears were stained with Giemsa stain to identity and quantify the MNs., Results: The frequency of oral mucosal problems among 250 persons working in mining regions was 170 (68.0%) with no oral mucosal conditions, 79 (32.6%) with oral mucosal conditions, 25 (10%) with leukoplakia, 1 (0.4%) with lichen planus, and 8 (3.2%) with ulcerations. Acute necrotising gingivitis was reported in one person (0.4%), candidiasis in two (0.8%), abscess in two (0.8%), OSMF in 39 (15.6%), and oral cancer in two (0.8%). The mean MN count was 2.40 + 1.57 in mine employees with habits, 2.18 + 1.25 in mine workers without habits, and 1.40 + 0.55 in normal healthy controls., Conclusion: Reduced occupational health risks brought on by exposure to mining contaminants require protective measures. Unlike its other halogen atom siblings, chlorination of a bioactive compound can change its physiological characteristics, improve its pharmacological profile, and function as a point of diversification through cross-coupling reactions. As a result, it has been a crucial strategy for drug discovery and development. However, functional groups such as amines, amides, hydroxy groups, or carboxylic acids trap the Cl + , severely limiting the reactivity and making direct chlorination far too difficult to be practical. Herein, we introduce a nucleophilic sulfonohydrazide catalyst for late-stage halogenation of peptides and drugs. This direct, mild and metal-free protocol shows high functional-group tolerance and is compatible with a range of structurally diverse peptides, drugs and aromatic compounds. Furthermore, DFT studies indicate that the reaction most likely proceeds via a cationic transition state. Background: This study describes the trauma experiences of people with severe mental illness (SMI) in Ethiopia and presents a model of how SMI and trauma exposure interact to reduce functioning and quality of life in this setting., Methods: A total of 53 participants living and working in a rural district in southern Ethiopia were interviewed: 18 people living with SMI, 21 caregivers, and 14 primary health care providers., Results: Many participants reported that exposure to traumatic and stressful events led to SMI, exacerbated SMI symptoms, and increased caregiver stress and distress. In addition, SMI symptoms and caregiver desperation, stress or stigma were also reported to increase the possibility of trauma exposure., Conclusions: Results suggest it is incumbent upon health professionals and the broader health community to view trauma exposure (broadly defined) as a public health problem that affects all, particularly individuals with SMI., (© 2023. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of sublingual methylcobalamin for the treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency anemia in children., Methods: A single arm intervention study was conducted between November, 2020 and April, 2022 in children aged 1-12 years with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. Children aged 1-6 years received a tablet of methylcobalamin (1500 mcg) by sublingual route every alternate day (three doses) while those aged 7-12 years received five such doses. Thereafter, one such sublingual tablet was given weekly and all participants were followed-up for 6 weeks., Results: 37 children with a mean (SD) age of 8.2 (4.1) years were treated and followed up prospectively. On day 10, no child needed rescue therapy with parenteral methylcobalamin. After 6 weeks, the mean (SD) serum cobalamin (mL) increased from 123.3 (35.5) pg/mL to 507.3 (274.2) pg/mL (P<0.001), plasma homocysteine (L) decreased from 48.9 (17.8) pg/mL to 16.3 (8.5) µmol/L (P<0.001), the mean (SD) hemoglobin increased by 2.3 (1.1) g/dL (P<0.001), and MCV decreased by 12.9 (6.8) fL (P<0.001). 67.6% children persisted to have anemia, albeit majority of them had mild or moderate anemia. There were no unsolicited side-effect reported., Conclusion: Sublingual methylcobalamin is effective for the treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency anemia in children; although, the duration of treatment needs to be longer than six weeks.

The aggressiveness and recurrence of cancer is linked to cancer stem cells (CSCs), but drugs targeting CSCs may not succeed in the clinic due to the lack of a distinct CSC subpopulation. Clinical Pt(II) drugs can increase stemness. We screened 15 Ru II or Ir III complexes with mesalazine or 3-aminobenzoate Schiff bases of the general formulas [Ru(p-cym)L] + , [Ru(p-cym)L], and [Ir(Cp*)L] + (L = L1 - L9 ) and found three complexes ( 2 , 12 , and 13 ) that are active against oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) CSCs. There is a putative oncogenic role of transcription factors (viz. NOTCH1, SOX2, c-MYC) to enhance the stemness. Our work shows that imidazolyl-mesalazine ester-based Ru II complexes inhibit growth of CSC-enriched OSCC 3D spheroids at low micromolar doses (2 μM). Complexes 2 , 12 , and 13 reduce stemness gene expression and induce differentiation markers ( Involucrin , CK10 ) in OSCC 3D cultures. The imidazolyl-mesalazine ester-based Ru II complex 13 shows the strongest effect. Downregulating c-MYC suggests that Ru II complexes may target c-MYC-driven cancers.

Climate change exerts profound influences on the ecological environments on a global scale, leading to habitat destruction and altering distribution patterns for numerous plant species. Traditional Chinese medicinal plants, such as those belonging to the Sambucus genus, have been extensively utilized for several centuries to treat fractures, rheumatism, and inflammation. However, our understanding of their geographic distribution and climatic adaptation within China still needs to be improved. In this study, we screened the optimal predictive model (random forest model) to predict the potential suitable distribution of three Sambucus species ( Sambucus adnata , Sambucus javanica , and Sambucus williamsii ) across China under both current and future climate scenarios. Moreover, we identified key climate factors that influence their potential distributions. Our findings revealed that S. adnata and S. javanica are predominantly shaped by temperature seasonality and mean diurnal range, respectively, whereas S. williamsii is significantly affected by the precipitation of the wettest month. Currently, S. williamsii is primarily distributed in north and central south China (covering 9.57 × 10 5 km 2 ), S. javanica is prevalent in the south and east regions (covering 6.41×10 5 km 2 ), and S. adnata predominantly thrives in the southwest China (covering 1.99×10 5 km 2 ). Under future climate change scenarios, it is anticipated that S. adnata may migrate to higher latitudes while S. javanica may shift to lower latitudes. However, potentially suitable areas for S. williamsii may contract under certain scenarios for the years 2050 and 2090, with an expansion trend under the SSP585 scenario for the year 2090. Our study emphasizes the importance of climatic variables in influencing the potential geographic distribution of Sambucus species. A multitargeting prodrug (2) that releases gemcitabine, oxaliplatin, and doxorubicin in their active form in cancer cells is a potent cytotoxic agent with nM IC 50s ; it is highly selective to cancer cells with mean selectivity indices to human (136) and murine (320) cancer cells. It effectively induces release of DAMPs (CALR, ATP & HMGB1) in CT26 cells facilitating more efficient phagocytosis by J774 macrophages than the FDA drugs or their co-administration. The viability of CT26 cells co-cultured with J774 macrophages and treated with 2 was reduced by 32 % compared to the non-treated cells, suggesting a synergistic antiproliferative effect between the chemical and immune reactions. 2 inhibited in vivo tumor growth in two murine models (LLC and CT26) better than the FDA drugs or their co-administration with significantly lower body weight loss. Sustainability and health inequities are key challenges in public health and healthcare. Research suggests that only about half of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) are sustained over time, and settings and populations experiencing systemic and structural barriers to health (e.g., poverty, racism, stigma, and discrimination) experience even greater challenges to sustainability. In this article, we argue that an enhanced focus on sustainability in the field of implementation science is critical in order to maximize the long-term health benefits and broader societal impacts of EBIs for all populations and settings. From an equity perspective, a focus on sustainability is particularly critical to prioritize among population sub-groups that have not historically received the benefits of health-related EBIs. We discuss how a health equity framing is essential to sustaining EBIs in under-resourced communities, and requires moving away from a deficit mindset that focuses on why EBIs are challenging to sustain, to one that focuses more on identifying and nurturing existing assets within individuals and communities to increase the likelihood that EBIs are sustained. Background: The past two decades have been marked by increased efforts to advance equity in various disciplines, including social sciences, public health, environmental health, and medicine. In 2020, a national movement of municipalities declared racism a public health crisis. These efforts have coincided and likely shaped a growing sphere of federal and philanthropic funding for health equity, which frequently calls for practical interventions toward reducing and ultimately eliminating disparities. Disparities in health such as maternal mortality, infant mortality, diabetes, cancer, and stroke have been linked to root causes such as racism. Often, root causes are also linked to disparities in other sectors (i.e., finance/wealth attainment, educational attainment, career attainment, and home ownership). In 2021, in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested that racist policies were root causes of U.S. racial health inequities. While racism, sexism, and classism, etc., are characterized as root causes, we posit that there is a deeper driver that has yet to be advanced. This presents a disparity-inequity model that maps disparities and inequities to the societal value system, not root causes., Methods: The KKey Values Inequities Disparities Model described in this article combines a case study of the Flint Water Crisis to explore the historic impact of human devaluation and its role in systemic racism and classism, which ultimately creates and exacerbates inequities that produce disparities in communities. The model integrates the value system and its contribution to societal causes (formerly known as root causes)., Conclusions: A broadly defined values-inequities-disparities model will allow researchers, practitioners, decision makers, lawmakers, and community members to (1) assess the core root of inequities and disparities; (2) identify solutions in the human value domain; (3) design appropriate course corrective programming, interventions, processes, and procedures; and (4) create actions to integrate new systemic procedures and practices in our laws and governance to advance equity., Competing Interests: The authors have declared no conflicts of interest for this article., (© Kent D. Background: The national Stepping Up Initiative has attracted over 500 counties interested in reducing the use of jail for individuals with mental health disorders. This paper identifies socioeconomic, criminal legal, and health care factors that predict the likelihood of counties joining Stepping Up., Results: After performing variable selection, logistic regression models were performed on 3,141 U.S. counties. Counties designated as medically underserved and/or mental health staffing shortage areas were less likely to participate in this initiative. Logistic regression models showed that larger counties (populations over 250,000) with better health care infrastructure, more mental health providers per capita, higher percent of Medicaid funded drug treatment services, and at least one medical school, were more likely to join Stepping Up. These counties had lower per capita jail populations, higher concentration of police resources, and higher pretrial incarceration rate., Conclusions: County-level health care delivery factors are major contributors to a county's likelihood, or willingness, of engaging in Stepping Up reform efforts to reduce jail population with mental health disorders issues. Therefore, improving availability and accessibility of medical and behavioral health care in different communities, may facilitate efforts to address the unnecessary incarceration of individuals with mental health disorders., (© 2023. We examine the conjecture of equivalence of nonequilibrium ensembles for turbulent flows in two dimensions in a dual-cascade setup. We construct a formally time-reversible Navier-Stokes equation in two dimensions by imposing global constraints of energy and enstrophy conservation. A comparative study of the statistical properties of its solutions with those obtained from the standard Navier-Stokes equations clearly shows that a formally time-reversible system is able to reproduce the features of a two-dimensional turbulent flow. Statistical quantities based on one- and two-point measurements show an excellent agreement between the two systems for the inverse- and direct-cascade regions. Moreover, we find that the conjecture holds very well for two-dimensional turbulent flows with both conserved energy and enstrophy at finite Reynolds number.

Purpose of Review: To summarize recent findings in global mental health along several domains including socioeconomic determinants, inequities, funding, and inclusion in global mental health research and practice., Recent Findings: Mental illness continues to disproportionately impact vulnerable populations and treatment coverage continues to be low globally. Advances in integrating mental health care and adopting task-shifting are accompanied by implementation challenges. The mental health impact of recent global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, geo-political events, and environmental change is likely to persist and require coordinated care approaches for those in need of psychosocial support. Inequities also exist in funding for global mental health and there has been gradual progress in terms of building local capacity for mental health care programs and research. Lastly, there is an increasing effort to include people with lived experiences of mental health in research and policy shaping efforts. The field of global mental health will likely continue to be informed by evidence and perspectives originating increasingly from low- and middle-income countries along with ongoing global events and centering of relevant stakeholders., (© 2023.
