Abstract

Current trend in nuclear reactor physics is a transition from technologies using thermal neutrons to technologies utilizing fast neutrons. Unfortunately focus was put mainly on the thermal neutrons for a long time and lead to very good knowledge about this low energy region, but very scarce coverage of the high energy region. This means that there is a gap in the knowledge of excitation functions for higher energies. This gap spreads from 20 MeV up to 1 GeV and higher. This is exactly the energy region needed for description of advanced nuclear systems such as accelerator driven systems (ADS). Our group from Nuclear Physics Institute (NPI) of the CAS is a member of an international collaboration Energy & Transmutation of Radioactive Waste (E&T RAW). This collaboration focuses on ADS for many years. In order to measure neutron field within ADS models it is necessary to know excitation functions of reactions used to monitor the neutron field. In many cases there are almost no experimental data for suitable reactions. Worse and quite common case is that there are no data at all. Therefore we are also focusing on measurements of these data in order to fill the databases as well as to allow further improvements of codes for nuclear data calculations.

Abstract

The cyclotron driven fast quasi-monoenergetic neutron source based on the p+ 9Be (thin target) reaction was studied at the proton energy around 30 MeV Due to higher melting point of Be, the p+ 9Be(thin), reaction could be considered as an alternative to the most used p+Li(thin) neutron source, providing a similar quasi-monoenergetic neutron spectrum at significantly higher neutron output owing to advance in higher incident proton beam current. The neutron spectrum measured by the time-of-flight method agrees with other experimental data and indicates dominant contribution of ground and first excited states leading to only two peaks, separated by some 2–3 MeV, in the p+thin 9Be neutron spectrum.

Abstract

Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

4. Three years of cross-section measurements of (n,xn) threshold reactions at TSL Uppsala and NPI Řež

Abstract

We use (n,xn) threshold reactions in various materials to measure high energy neutron flux from spallation reactions. Unfortunately, no experimental cross-section data exist for reactions with x higher than four and neutron energies over ∼ 40 MeV. With the support from EFNUDAT we performed seven successful (n,xn) cross-section measurements in two campaigns exploiting the quasi-monoenergetic neutron source at The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden. Neutron energies from the 7Li(p, n)7Be based source were in the region 22 to 94 MeV. We carried out additional four irradiations with neutron energies from 17 up to 34 MeV using the quasi-monoenergetic neutron source of the Nuclear Physics Institute in Řež. We studied Al, Au, Bi, I, In, and Ta materials. Although we used different neutron sources, gamma detectors and foil geometries, we obtained consistent results. We observed good agreement with the data in EXFOR, so we believe we have understood and solved all possible sources of uncertainties.

Abstract

High quality nuclear data is the most fundamental underpinning for all neutron metrology applications. This paper describes the release of version II of the International Reactor Dosimetry and Fusion File (IRDFF-II) that contains a consistent set of nuclear data for fission and fusion neutron metrology applications up to 60~MeV neutron energy. The library is intended to support: a) applications in research reactors; b) safety and regulatory applications in the nuclear power generation in commercial fission reactors; and c) material damage studies in support of the research and development of advanced fusion concepts. The paper describes the contents of the library, documents the thorough verification process used in its preparation, and provides an extensive set of validation data gathered from a wide range of neutron benchmark fields. The new \mbox{IRDFF-II} library includes 119 metrology reactions, four cover material reactions to support self-shielding corrections, five metrology metrics used by the dosimetry community, and cumulative fission products yields for seven fission products in three different neutron energy regions. In support of characterizing the measurement of the residual nuclei from the dosimetry reactions and the fission product decay modes, the present document lists the recommended decay data, particle emission energies and probabilities for 68 activation products. It also includes neutron spectral characterization data for 29 neutron benchmark fields for the validation of the library contents. The IRDFF-II library and comprehensive documentation is available online at https://www-nds.iaea.org/IRDFF/. Abstract

At the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) we are involved in the Accelerator-Driven-System (ADS) research. We perform experiments with assemblies composed of a spallation target and a subcritical blanket irradiated with highenergy proton or deuteron beams that generate high-energy neutron fields by spallation and fission reactions. In this paper, three uranium assemblies are presented: Energy plus Transmutation (E+T), QUINTA and BURAN. We discuss the results of the E+T and QUINTA irradiations by 1.6 GeV deuterons and 660 MeV protons, respectively. We have focused on the regions close to the primary beam passage through the targets. The field has been measured using activation detectors of 209Bi, 59Co, and natPb. Monte Carlo simulations using MCNPX 2.7.0 have been performed and compared to the experimental results. We discovered that the field intensity near the primary beam is very dependent on the precision of the accelerator beam settings. Therefore, a Monte Carlo-based study of the influence of the uncertainty of primary proton beam parameters on experimental result accuracy of the QUINTA assembly has been carried out. Abstract

Abstract Several simple accelerator-driven system (ADS) setups were irradiated by relativistic proton and deuteron beams in last years at the Nuclotron synchrotron site of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia. This paper is dedicated to a 4 GeV deuteron irradiation of a setup called Energy plus Transmutation (E+T), consisting of a lead target, natural uranium blanket, and polyethylene shielding. This paper represents the finalization of data analysis and concludes systematics of the proton and deuteron experiments carried out with the E+T setup. Activation detectors served for monitoring of proton and deuteron beams and for measurements of neutron field distribution in model ADS studies. Products of reactions with thresholds up to 106 MeV as well as non-threshold reactions were observed in the samples. The yields of the produced isotopes were determined using the gamma-ray spectrometry and compared with Monte Carlo simulations performed with the MCNPX transport code. Highlights • Model ADS setup consisting of Pb+U was irradiated by 4 GeV deuteron beam. • Activation samples were used to measure the produced neutron field distribution. • Products of neutron reactions with threshold up to 106 MeV were measured. • Relativistic deuteron reactions on Cu used for the beam fluence determination. • The 40 MeV border between cascade and evaporation phases of spallation observed. Abstract The intensities of γ -rays from the 196m2Au decay adopted in 1998 and 2007 ENSDF evaluations differ up to 20%. Gold samples were irradiated in intensive neutron fluxes with energies up to 35 MeV to produce the isotopes 196Au in all isomeric states. The intensities of gammas from the radioactive decay of the isomer 196m2Au were measured by means of the nuclear γ -ray spectrometry (HPGe detectors) and compared to the existing adopted data. Abstract

The cross-sections of relativistic deuteron reactions on natural copper were studied in detail by means of activation method. The copper foils were irradiated during experiments with the big Quinta uranium target at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia. The deuteron beams with energies ranging from 1 GeV up to 8 GeV were produced by JINR Nuclotron. Residual nuclides were identified by the gamma spectrometry. Lack of such experimental cross-section values prevents the usage of copper foils from beam integral monitoring.

Abstract

The experiment described in this communication is a part of the scientific program „Investigations of physical aspects of electronuclear method of energy production and transmutation of radioactive waste of atomic energetic using relativistic beams from the JINR Synchrophasotron/Nuclotron“ - the project „Energy plus Transmutation“. The performing of the first experiment at deuteron beam with energy 2.52 GeV at the electronuclear setup which consists of Pb-target with U-blanket (206.4 kg of natural uranium) and transmutation samples and its preliminary results are described. The hermetic samples of isotopes of I-129, Np-237, Pu-238 and Pu-239 which are produced in atomic reactors and industry setups which use nuclear materials and nuclear technologies were irradiated in the field of electronuclear neutrons produced in the Pbtarget surrounded with the U-blanket setup “Energy plus transmutation”. The estimations of its transmutations (radioecological aspect) were obtained in result of measurements of gamma activities of these samples. The information about space-energy distribution of neutrons in the volume of the Pb-target and the U-blanket was obtained with help of sets of activation threshold detectors (Al, V, Cu, Co, Y, In, I, Ta, Au, W, Bi and other), solid state nuclear track detectors, He-3 neutron detectors and nuclear emulsions.

Abstract

The cyclotron driven fast quasi-monoenergetic neutron source based on the p+9Be (thin target) reaction was studied at the proton energy around 30MeV Due to higher melting point of Be, the p+9Be(thin), reaction could be considered as an alternative to the most used p+Li(thin) neutron source, providing a similar quasi-monoenergetic neutron spectrum at significantly higher neutron output owing to advance in higher incident proton beam current. The neutron spectrum measured by the time-of-flight method agrees with other experimental data and indicates dominant contribution of ground and first excited states leading to only two peaks, separated by some 2-3MeV, in the p+thin 9Be neutron spectrum.
