Context: Vela X-1 is one of the best studied X-ray binaries. Frequently though, specific values for its parameters have been used in subsequent studies without considering alternatives. Aims: We aim to provide a robust compilation and synthesis of the accumulated knowledge about Vela X-1 as a solid baseline for future studies and identify specific avenues of possible future research. Methods: We explore the literature for Vela X-1 and on modelling efforts, describing the evolution of the system knowledge. We also add information derived from public data, especially the Gaia EDR3 release. Results: We update the distance to Vela X-1, the spectral classification for HD 77518 and find that the supergiant may be very close to filling its Roche lobe. Constraints on the clumpiness of the stellar wind have improved. The orbit is very well determined, but the uncertain inclination limits information on the neutron star mass. Estimates for the stellar wind have evolved towards lower velocities, supporting the idea of transient wind-captured disks around the neutron star. Hydrodynamic models and observations are consistent with an accretion wake trailing the neutron star. Conclusions: Vela X-1 is an excellent laboratory, but a lot of room remains to improve. Well-coordinated multi-wavelength observations and campaigns addressing the intrinsic variability are required. New opportunities will arise through new instrumentation. Models of the stellar wind should account for the orbital eccentricity and the non-spherical shape of HD 77581. Realistic multi-dimensional models of radiative transfer in the UV and X-rays are needed, but remain very challenging. Improved MHD models covering a wide range of scales would be required to improve understanding of the plasma-magnetosphere coupling. The Habitable Exoplanet Observatory, or HabEx, has been designed to be the Great Observatory of the 2030s. For the first time in human history, technologies have matured sufficiently to enable an affordable space-based telescope mission capable of discovering and characterizing Earthlike planets orbiting nearby bright sunlike stars in order to search for signs of habitability and biosignatures. Such a mission can also be equipped with instrumentation that will enable broad and exciting general astrophysics and planetary science not possible from current or planned facilities. HabEx is a space telescope with unique imaging and multi-object spectroscopic capabilities at wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to near-IR. These capabilities allow for a broad suite of compelling science that cuts across the entire NASA astrophysics portfolio. HabEx has three primary science goals: (1) Seek out nearby worlds and explore their habitability; (2) Map out nearby planetary systems and understand the diversity of the worlds they contain; (3) Enable new explorations of astrophysical systems from our own solar system to external galaxies by extending our reach in the UV through near-IR. This Great Observatory science will be selected through a competed GO program, and will account for about 50% of the HabEx primary mission. The preferred HabEx architecture is a 4m, monolithic, off-axis telescope that is diffraction-limited at 0.4 microns and is in an L2 orbit. A variety of on-orbit imaging and spectroscopic observations are used to characterize the Charge Transfer Efficiency (CTE) of the Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. A set of formulae is presented to correct observations of point sources for CTE-related loss of signal. For data taken in imaging mode, the CTE loss is parametrized in terms of the location of the source on the CCD, the source signal level within the measurement aperture, the background level, and the time of observation. For spectroscopic data, it is found that one additional parameter is needed to provide an adequate calibration of the CTE loss, namely the signal in the point spread function located between the signal extraction box and the read-out amplifier. The effect of the latter parameter is significant for spectra taken using the G750L or G750M gratings of STIS. The algorithms presented here correct flux calibration inaccuracies due to CTE losses as large as 30% to within ~ 1.5% RMS throughout the wavelength range covered by the STIS CCD modes. This uncertainty is similar to the Poisson noise associated with a source detected at a signal level of about 2500 electrons per resolution element. Using bi-directional CCD readouts, centroid shifts incurred due to CTE loss are also derived. A tight correlation is found between the CTE loss and the centroid shift (both for imaging and spectroscopic modes), thus enabling one to correct for both effects of imperfect charge transfer to STIS CCD observations., Comment: 49 pages in AASTeX preprint format. 18 figures, 8 tables

In the last decade we have come to realize that the traditional classification of stellar clusters into open and globular clusters cannot be easily extended beyond the realm of the Milky Way, and that even for our Galaxy it is not fully valid. The main failure of the traditional classification is the existence of Massive Young Clusters (MYCs), which are massive like Globular Clusters (GCs) but also young like open clusters. We describe here the mass and age distributions of clusters in general with an emphasis on MYCs. We also discuss the issue of what constitutes a cluster and try to establish a general classification scheme., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, to appear in "How does the Galaxy work? Supernova explosions are one of the most energetic--and potentially lethal--phenomena in the Universe. Scientists have speculated for decades about the possible consequences for life on Earth of a nearby supernova, but plausible candidates for such an event were lacking. Here we show that the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, a group of young stars currently located at~130 parsecs from the Sun, has generated 20 SN explosions during the last 11 Myr, some of them probably as close as 40 pc to our planet. We find that the deposition on Earth of 60Fe atoms produced by these explosions can explain the recent measurements of an excess of this isotope in deep ocean crust samples. We propose that ~2 Myr ago, one of the SNe exploded close enough to Earth to seriously damage the ozone layer, provoking or contributing to the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary marine extinction., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. We have used WFPC2 VRI observations to calculate the distances to three nearby galaxies, NGC 4214, UGC 685, and UGC 5456 using the tip of the red giant branch method. Our values for NGC 4214 (2.94 +/- 0.18 Mpc) and UGC 685 (4.79 +/- 0.30 Mpc) are the most precise measurementes of the distances to these objects ever made. For UGC 5456 the data do not allow us to reach a decisive conclusion since there are two possible solutions, one leading towards a short distance around 3.8 Mpc and another one towards a long distance of 5.6 Mpc or more., Comment: To appear in the March 2002 issue of the Astronomical Journal. 19 pages, including 4 tables and 8 figures. The Sun is located in a low-density region of the interstellar medium partially filled with hot gas that is the likely result of several nearby supernova explosions within the last 10 Myr. Here we use astrometric data to show that part of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association was located closer to the present position of the Sun 5-7 Myr ago than today. Evolutionary synthesis models indicate that the association must have experienced ~20 supernova explosions in the last 10-12 Myr, a prediction that is supported by the detection of four or five runaway stars escaping from it. The ~6 SNe produced by the Lower Centaurus Crux subgroup are likely responsible for the creation of the Local Bubble., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure. We have retrieved multicolor WFPC2/HST data from the STScI archive for 27 nearby Massive (>= 3x10^4 M_Sun) Young (< 20 Myr) star Clusters (MYCs). The data represents the most-complete-to-date sample of clearly resolved MYCs. We have analyzed their structural properties and have found that they can be classified as either Super Star Clusters (SSCs) or as Scaled OB Associations (SOBAs). SSCs have a compact core possibly surrounded by a halo while SOBAs have no core. A morphological sequence can be established from SSCs with weak halos to SSCs with strong halos to SOBAs and we propose that this is linked to the original mass distribution of the parent giant molecular clouds. Our results indicate that a significant fraction of the stars in MYCs dissipate on timescales of 10 Gyr or less due to the extended character of some of the clusters. Also, SSCs with ages < 7 Myr have smaller cores on average than those with ages > 7 Myr, confirming predictions of numerical simulations with mass loss., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ. 29 pages, 8 figures. We have developed a method to calculate the fundamental parameters of the vertical structure of the Galaxy in the solar neighborhood from trigonometric parallaxes alone. The method takes into account Lutz-Kelker-type biases in a self-consistent way and has been applied to a sample of O-B5 stars obtained from the Hipparcos catalog. We find that the Sun is located 24.2 +/- 1.7 (random) +/- 0.4 (systematic) pc above the galactic plane and that the disk O-B5 stellar population is distributed with a scale height of 34.2 +/- 0.8 (random) +/- 2.5 (systematic) pc and an integrated surface density of (1.62 +/- 0.04 (random) +/- 0.14 (systematic)) 10^{-3} stars pc^{-2}. A halo component is also detected in the distribution and constitutes at least ~5% of the total O-B5 population. The O-B5 stellar population within ~100 pc of the Sun has an anomalous spatial distribution, with a less-than-average number density. We present new H alpha and [O III] 5007 narrow band images of the starbursting dwarf galaxy NGC 4214, obtained with the WFPC2 onboard HST, together with VLA observations of the same galaxy. The HST images resolve features down to physical scales of 2-5 pc, revealing several young (<10 Myr) star forming complexes of various ionized gas morphologies (compact knots, complete or fragmentary shells) and sizes (10-200 pc). Our results are consistent with a uniform set of evolutionary trends: The youngest, smaller, filled regions that presumably are those just emerging from dense star forming clouds, tend to be of high excitation and are highly obscured. Evolved, larger shell-like regions have lower excitation and are less extincted due of the action of stellar winds and supernovae. In at least one case we find evidence for induced star formation which has led to a two-stage starburst. Age estimates based on W(H alpha) measurements do not agree with those inferred from wind-driven shell models of expanding H II regions. The most likely explanation for this effect is the existence of a 2 Myr delay in the formation of superbubbles caused by the pressure exerted by the high density medium in which massive stars are born. We report the detection of a supernova remnant embedded in one of the two large H II complexes of NGC 4214. The dust in NGC 4214 is not located in a foreground screen but is physically associated with the warm ionized gas., Comment: 41 pages, including 9 figures and 7 tables. Several facts regarding the structure of NGC 604 are examined here. The three main cavities, produced by the mechanical energy from massive stars which in NGC 604 are spread over a volume of 10$^6$ pc$^3$, are shown here to be undergoing blowout into the halo of M33. High resolution long slit spectroscopy is used to track the impact from massive stars while HST archive data is used to display the asymmetry of the nebula. NGC 604 is found to be a collection of photoionized filaments and sections of shells in direct contact with the thermalized matter ejected by massive stars. The multiple blowout events presently drain the energy injected by massive stars and thus the densest photoionized gas is found almost at rest and is expected to suffer a slow evolution., Comment: 15 pages (11 text), 4 figures. Delta Ori is the nearest massive, single-lined eclipsing binary (O9.5 II + B0.5III). As such it serves as a fundamental calibrator of the mass-radius-luminosity relation in the upper HR diagram. It is also the only eclipsing O-type binary system which is bright enough to be observable with the CHANDRA gratings in a reasonable exposure. Studies of resolved X-ray line complexes provide tracers of wind mass loss rate and clumpiness; occultation by the X-ray dark companion of the line emitting region can provide direct spatial information on the location of the X-ray emitting gas produced by shocks embedded in the wind of the primary star. We obtained phase-resolved spectra with Chandra in order to determine the level of phase-dependent vs. secular variability in the shocked wind. Along with the Chandra observations we obtained simultaneous photometry from space with the Canadian MOST satellite to help understand the relation between X-ray and photospheric variability.

We review the on-orbit spectroscopic observations that are being used to characterize the Charge Transfer Efficiency (CTE) of the STIS CCD in spectroscopic mode. We parameterize the CTE-related loss for spectrophotometry of point sources in terms of dependencies on the brightness of the source, the background level, the signal in the PSF outside the standard extraction box, and the time of observation. Primary constraints on our correction algorithm are provided by measurements of the CTE loss rates for simulated spectra (images of a tungsten lamp taken through slits oriented along the dispersion axis) combined with estimates of CTE losses for actual spectra of spectrophotometric standard stars in the first order CCD modes. For point-source spectra at the standard reference position at the CCD center, CTE losses as large as 30% are corrected to within approx.1% RMS after application of the algorithm presented here, rendering the Poisson noise associated with the source detection itself to be the dominant contributor to the total flux calibration uncertainty.
