1. Predictive Model and Optimization of Micromixers Geometry using Gaussian Process with Uncertainty Quantification and Genetic Algorithm

Abstract

Microfluidic devices are gaining attention for their small size and ability to handle tiny fluid volumes. Mixing fluids efficiently at this scale, known as micromixing, is crucial. This article builds upon previous research by introducing a novel optimization approach in microfluidics, combining Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The research focuses on improving global optimization while reducing computational expenses. It draws inspiration from a Y-type micromixer, initially featuring cylindrical grooves on the main channel's surface and internal obstructions. Simulations, conducted using OpenFOAM software, evaluate the impact of circular obstructions on mixing percentage and pressure drop, considering variations in obstruction diameter and offset. A Gaussian Process (GP) was utilized to model the data, providing model uncertainty. Thus, this study optimizes geometries by using genetic algorithm (GA) and least-square optimization based on the reduced order model provided by GP. Results align with previous research, showing that medium-sized obstructions (137 mm diameter, 10 mm offset) near the channel wall are optimal. Abstract

This work explores a new approach for optimization in the field of microfluidics, using the combination of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), and Machine Learning techniques. The objective of this combination is to enable global optimization with lower computational cost. The initial geometry is inspired in a Y-type micromixer with cylindrical grooves on the surface of the main channel and obstructions inside it. Simulations for circular obstructions were carried out using the OpenFOAM software to observe the influences of obstacles. The effects of obstruction diameter (OD), and offset (OF) in the range of [20,140] mm and [10,160] mm, respectively, on percentage of mixing ($\varphi$), pressure drop ($\Delta P$) and energy cost ($\Delta P/\varphi$) were investigated. Numerical experiments were analyzed using machine learning. Firstly, a neural network was used to train the dataset composed by the inputs OD and OF and outputs $\varphi$ and $\Delta P$. The objective functions (ObF) chosen to numerically optimize the performance of micromixers with grooves and obstructions were $\varphi$, $\Delta P$, $\Delta P/\varphi$. The genetic algorithm obtained the geometry that offers the maximum value of $\varphi$ and the minimum value of $\Delta P_s$. The results show that $\varphi$ increases monotonically with increasing OD at all values of OF. The inverse is observed with increasing offset. Furthermore, the results reveal that $\Delta P$ e $\Delta P/\varphi$ also increase with OD. On the other hand, the pressure drop and the cost of mixing energy present a maximum close to the lowest values of OF. Finally, the optimal value obtained for the diameter was OD=131 mm and for the offset OF=10 mm, which corresponds to obstruction of medium size close to the channel wall.

5. A generalized spray-flamelet formulation by means of a monotonic variable

Abstract

The external structure of the spray-flamelet can be described using the Schvab-Zel'dovich-Li\~nan formulation. The gaseous mixture-fraction variable as function of the physical space, Z(x_i), typically employed for the description of gaseous diffusion flames leads to non-monotonicity behaviour for spray flames due to the extra fuel supplied by vaporisation of droplets distributed into the flow. As a result, the overall properties of spray flames depend not only on Z and the scalar dissipation rate, but also on the spray source term, S_v. We propose a new general coordinate variable which takes into account the spatial information about the entire mixture fraction due to the gaseous phase and droplet vaporisation. This coordinate variable, Z_C(x_i) is based on the cumulative value of the gaseous mixture fraction Z(x_i), and is shown to be monotonic. For pure gaseous flow, the new cumulative function, Z_C, yields the well-established flamelet structure in Z-space. In the present manuscript, the spray-flamelet structure and the new equations for temperature and mass fractions in terms of Z_C are derived and then applied to the canonical counterflow configuration with potential flow. Numerical results are obtained for ethanol and methanol sprays, and the effect of Lewis and Stokes numbers on the spray-flamelet structure are analyzed. The proposed formulation agrees well when mapping the structure back to physical space thereby confirming our integration methodology.

Abstract

The phase diagram of correlated, disordered electron systems is calculated within dynamical mean-field theory for the Anderson-Falicov-Kimball model with nearest-neighbors and next-nearest-neighbors hopping. The half-filled band is analyzed in terms of the chemical potential of the system using the geometric and arithmetic averages. We also introduce the on-site energies exhibiting a long-range correlated disorder, which generates a system with similar characteristics as the one created by a random independent variable distribution. Abstract

We investigate through computational simulations with a pore network model the formation of patterns caused by erosion-deposition mechanisms. In this model, the geometry of the pore space changes dynamically as a consequence of the coupling between the fluid flow and the movement of particles due to local drag forces. Our results for this irreversible process show that the model is capable to reproduce typical natural patterns caused by well known erosion processes. Moreover, we observe that, within a certain range of porosity values, the grains form clusters that are tilted with respect to the horizontal with a characteristic angle. Abstract

The phase diagram of correlated, disordered electron systems is calculated within dynamical mean-field theory using the H\"older mean local density of states. A critical disorder strength is determined in the Anderson-Falicov-Kimball model and the arithmetically and the geometrically averages are found to be just particular means used respectively to detect or not the Anderson localization. 9. Is the Phonological Deficit in Developmental Dyslexia Related to Impaired Phonological Representations and to Universal Phonological Grammar?

Abstract

To date, the nature of the phonological deficit in developmental dyslexia is still debated. We concur with possible impairments in the representations of the universal phonological constraints that universally govern how phonemes co-occur as a source of this deficit. We were interested in whether-and how-dyslexic children have sensitivity to sonority-related markedness constraints. We tested 10 French dyslexic children compared with 20 typically developing chronological age-matched and reading level-matched controls. All were tested with two aurally administered syllable counting tasks that manipulated well-formedness of unattested consonant clusters, as determined by universal phonological sonority-related markedness constraints (onset clusters in Experiment 1; intervocalic clusters in Experiment 2). Surprisingly, dyslexic children's response patterns were similar to those in both control groups; as universal phonological sonority-related markedness increased, dyslexic children increasingly perceptually confused and phonologically repaired clusters with an illusory epenthetic vowel (e.g., /Bebal/). Although dyslexic children were systematically slower, like both control groups, they were influenced by universal sonority-related markedness constraints and hierarchically ranked constraints specific to French over evident acoustic-phonetic contrasts or sonority-unrelated cues. Our results are counterintuitive but innovative and compete to question an impaired universal phonological grammar because dyslexic children were found to have normal universal phonological constraints and were skilled to restore phonotactically legal syllable structures with a language-specific illusory epenthetic vowel (i.e., /e/-like vowel). We discuss them regarding active phonological decoding and recoding processes within the framework of the optimality theory. (Contains 3 figures and 4 tables.)

10. Are French Dyslexic Children Sensitive to Consonant Sonority in Segmentation Strategies? Preliminary Evidence from a Letter Detection Task

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate whether--and how--consonant sonority (obstruent vs. sonorant) and status (coda vs. onset) within syllable boundaries modulate the syllable-based segmentation strategies. Here, it is questioned whether French dyslexic children, who experience acoustic-phonetic (i.e., voicing) and phonological impairments, are sensitive to an optimal "sonorant coda-obstruent onset" sonority profile as a cue for a syllable-based segmentation. To examine these questions, we used a modified version of the illusory conjunction paradigm with French dyslexic children compared with both chronological age-matched and reading level-matched controls. Our results first showed that the syllable-based segmentation is developmentally constrained in visual identification: in normally reading children, it appears to progressively increase as reading skills increase. However, surprisingly, our results also showed that dyslexic children were able to use syllable-sized units. Then, data highlighted that a syllable-based segmentation in visual identification basically relies on an optimal "sonorant coda-obstruent onset" sonority profile rather than on phonological and orthographic statistical properties in normally reading children as well as, surprisingly, in dyslexic children. Our results are discussed to support a sonority-modulated prelexical role of syllable-sized units in visual identification in French, even in dyslexic children who exhibited a developmentally delayed profile. We argue that dyslexic children have deficits in online phonetic-phonological processing rather than degraded or underspecified phonetic-phonological representations. 11. Do Consonant Sonority and Status Influence Syllable-Based Segmentation Strategies in a Visual Letter Detection Task? Developmental Evidence in French Children

Abstract

This article queries whether consonant sonority (sonorant vs. obstruent) and status (coda vs. onset) within intervocalic clusters influence syllable-based segmentation strategies. We used a modified version of the illusory conjunction paradigm to test whether French beginning, intermediate, and advanced readers were sensitive to an optimal "sonorant coda-obstruent onset" sonority profile within the syllable boundaries as a cue for a syllable-based segmentation. Data showed that children used a syllable-based segmentation that improved with reading skills and age. The results are discussed to support that the visual letter detection within pseudowords primarily and early relies on acoustic-phonetic cues within the syllable boundaries, whereas the syllable effect seems to be developmentally constrained by reading skills and age. 12. The Nature of the Phonological Processing in French Dyslexic Children: Evidence for the Phonological Syllable and Linguistic Features' Role in Silent Reading and Speech Discrimination

Abstract

This study investigated the status of phonological representations in French dyslexic children (DY) compared with reading level- (RL) and chronological age-matched (CA) controls. We focused on the syllable's role and on the impact of French linguistic features. In Experiment 1, we assessed oral discrimination abilities of pairs of syllables that varied as a function of voicing, mode or place of articulation, or syllable structure. Results suggest that DY children underperform controls with a "speed-accuracy" deficit. However, DY children exhibit some similar processing than those highlighted in controls. As in CA and RL controls, DY children have difficulties in processing two sounds that only differ in voicing, and preferentially process obstruent rather than fricative sounds, and more efficiently process CV than CCV syllables. In Experiment 2, we used a modified version of the Cole, Magnan, and Grainger's (Applied Psycholinguistics 20:507-532, 1999) paradigm. Results show that DY children underperform CA controls but outperform RL controls. However, as in CA and RL controls, data reveal that DY children are able to use phonological procedures influenced by initial syllable frequency. Thus, DY children process syllabically high-frequency syllables but phonemically process low-frequency syllables. They also exhibit lexical and syllable frequency effects. Consequently, results provide evidence that DY children performances can be accounted for by laborious phonological syllable-based procedures and also degraded phonological representations.

13. Syllable Frequency Effects in Visual Word Recognition: Developmental Approach in French Children

Abstract

This study investigates the syllable's role in the normal reading acquisition of French children at three grade levels (1st, 3rd, and 5th), using a modified version of Cole, Magnan, and Grainger's (1999) paradigm. We focused on the effects of syllable frequency and word frequency. The results suggest that from the first to third years of reading instruction, children process high-frequency syllables as syllable units while processing low-frequency syllables as phoneme units. In fifth graders, syllable-based processing is extended to both high and low syllable frequencies, primarily due to CVC structures with high-frequency syllables. Lexical frequency does not significantly influence syllable processing. These findings reveal that the syllable is an early prelexical unit modulated initially by syllable frequency, and subsequently by grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences. High-frequency syllables did not produce inhibitory effects. Consequently, results are compatible with Levelt and Wheeldon's (1994) mental syllabary hypothesis. Implications for specific reading training and syllable based remediation are discussed. (Contains 4 figures and 3 tables.)

The clinical efficacy of SLIT has been established in a number of clinical trials and meta-analyses. However, because SLIT is self-administered by patients without medical supervision, the degree of patient adherence with treatment is still a concern. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception by allergists of issues related to SLIT adherence.Methods: We performed a questionnaire-based survey of 296 Italian allergists, based on the adherence issues known from previous studies. The perception of importance of each item was assessed by a VAS scale ranging from 0 to 10.Results: Patient perception of clinical efficacy was considered the most important factor (ranked 1 by 54% of allergists), followed by the possibility of reimbursement (ranked 1 by 34%), and by the absence of side effects (ranked 1 by 21%). Patient education, regular follow-up, and ease of use of SLIT were ranked first by less than 20% of allergists.Conclusion: These findings indicate that clinical efficacy, cost, and side effects are perceived as the major issues influencing patient adherence to SLIT, and that further improvement of adherence is likely to be achieved by improving the patient information provided by prescribers.Keywords: adherence, sublingual immunotherapy, efficacy, cost, side effects

17. Small aggregates of benzoporphyrin molecules observed in water–organic solvent mixtures

Abstract

Benzoporphyrins, chlorin-type compounds, are efficient new drugs in photodynamic therapy. In this work, some aspects of the benzoporphyrin-1,3-diene dimethyl ester (DiesterB) aggregation were investigated in water–organic solvent mixtures, using visible spectrophotometry. The effects of solvent mixtures, water with acetonitrile, dioxane, methanol and ethanol, were compared taking the calculated aggregation equilibrium constant (K) and the aggregation number. The K dependence on temperature, DiesterB concentration and water content suggest that, in water with acetonitrile, the predominant species is a dimer, whereas in dioxane, methanol and ethanol systems, there are multiple equilibria, with a pre-equilibrium between the monomer and dimer (small amount), followed by trimer formation. Not only the solvent polarity but also the nature of the organic solvent are important for the aggregation process, driving the aggregate size and the magnitude of the equilibrium constant. Abstract

From these results, it was possible to estimate the other microscopic constants and consequently the Hammett substituent constants (σm) for two m-aminoalkylsulphonates and the electronic effects of two alkylsulphonate substituents separately. For the m-aminoalkylsulphonate substituents the σm values are −0.12 for m-aminopropylsulphonate and −0.27 for m-aminobutylsulphonate, and therefore the electron-donating effect prevails when three methylene units are present. 21. Angular alignment of a polarization-maintaining optical fiber

Abstract

We describe a simple, fast, and accurate technique for the angular alignment of a polarization-maintaining monomode optical fiber. The method uses simple mechanical supports and is based on the detection of the ellipticity of the light polarization at the fiber output, with the help of a simple rotating polarizer, a photodetector, and an oscilloscope. © 2001 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
