We present MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) observations of the HI gas in the Klemola31 galaxy group ($z=0.029$), located along the line of sight to the radio-loud quasar PKS2020-370 ($z=1.048$). Four galaxies of the group are detected in HI emission, and HI absorption is also detected in front of PKS2020-370 in Klemola31A. The emission and absorption are somewhat compensating on the line of sight of the quasar, and the derived column density of the absorption appears under-estimated, with respect to the neighbouring emission. A symmetric tilted-ring model of Klemola31A, assuming the absorbing gas in regular rotation in the plane, yields a rather high spin temperature of 530K. An alternative interpretation is that the absorbing gas is extra-planar, which will also account for its non-circular motion. The NaI/CaII ratio also suggests that the absorbing gas is unrelated to cold HI disk. Two of the galaxies in the Klemola group are interacting with a small companion, and reveal typical tidal tails, and velocity perturbations. Only one of the galaxies, ESO400-13, reveals a strong HI deficiency, and a characteristic ram-pressure stripping, with a total asymmetry in the distribution of its gas. Since a small galaxy group as Klemola31 is not expected to host a dense intra-group gas, this galaxy must be crossing the group at a very high velocity, mostly in the sky plane., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted in MNRAS (minor corrections)

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. Unitarization models describe phenomenologically the high energy behaviour of a strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector. In this work, predictions of some unitarized models in vector boson scattering at LHC are studied and compared with analogous studies in Equivalent Vector Boson Approximation and previous results for the benchmark no-Higgs scenario. To perform such studies, unitarized model amplitudes have been implemented in the PHANTOM Monte Carlo in a complete calculation with six fermions in the final state., Comment: version accepted for publication on JHEP

PHANTOM is a tree level Monte Carlo for six parton final states at proton--proton, proton--antiproton and electron--positron collider at O(alpha_ew^6) and O(alpha_ew^4*alpha_s^2) including possible interferences between the two sets of diagrams. This comprehends all purely electroweak contribution as well as all contributions with one virtual or two external gluons. It can generate unweighted events for any set of processes and it is interfaced to parton shower and hadronization packages via the last Les Houches Accord protocol. A standard file format is proposed to store process and event information, primarily output from parton-level event generators for further use by general-purpose ones. The information content is identical with what was already defined by the Les Houches Accord five years ago, but then in terms of Fortran commonblocks. There are many possibilities for new physics beyond the Standard Model that feature non-standard Higgs sectors. These may introduce new sources of CP violation, and there may be mixing between multiple Higgs bosons or other new scalar bosons. Alternatively, the Higgs may be a composite state, or there may even be no Higgs at all. These non-standard Higgs scenarios have important implications for collider physics as well as for cosmology, and understanding their phenomenology is essential for a full comprehension of electroweak symmetry breaking. This report discusses the most relevant theories which go beyond the Standard Model and its minimal, CP-conserving supersymmetric extension: two-Higgs-doublet models and minimal supersymmetric models with CP violation, supersymmetric models with an extra singlet, models with extra gauge groups or Higgs triplets, Little Higgs models, models in extra dimensions, and models with technicolour or other new strong dynamics. This Report summarises the activities of the "SM and Higgs" working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. Boson boson scattering and Higgs production in boson boson fusion will be actively investigated at the LHC. We have performed a parton level study of all processes of the type $q_1 q_2 \to q_3 q_4 q_5 q_6 l^+l^-$ using for the first time a full fledged six fermion Monte Carlo event generator which employs exact matrix elements at $\O(\alpha_{em}^6)$. We have examined Higgs production in vector boson fusion followed by the decay chain $H\to ZZ\to l^+l^-jj$, including exactly all electroweak irreducible backgrounds. In the high mass region we have compared the case of a relatively light Higgs with the no-Higgs case. The integrated cross section for the latter case is more than twice that in the former for a minimum invariant mass of the $ZV$ pair of about 800 \GeV. We find, in a preliminary anlysis at parton level that, summing up the muon and the electron channels, about 30 events are expected in the light Higgs case for L=100 $fb^{-1}$., Comment: Final version published in Phys.Rev.D

Boson-boson scattering and Higgs production in boson-boson fusion hold the key to electroweak symmetry breaking. In order to analyze these essential features of the Standard Model we have performed a partonic level study of all processes $q_1 q_2 \to q_3 q_4 q_5 q_6 l \nu$ at the LHC using the exact matrix elements at $\O(\alpha_{em}^6)$ provided by \Phase, a new MC generator. These processes include also three boson production and the purely electroweak contribution to \toptop production as well as all irreducible backgrounds. Kinematical cuts have been studied in order to enhance the VV scattering signal over background. \Phase has been compared with different Monte Carlo's showing that a complete calculation is necessary for a correct description of the process., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures

PHASE is a new event generator dedicated to the study of Standard Model processes with six fermions in the final state at the LHC. The code is intended for analyses of vector boson scattering, Higgs search, three gauge boson production, and top physics. This first version of the program describes final states characterized by the presence of one neutrino, $pp\to 4q +l\nu_l$, at O($\alpha^6$). PHASE is based on a new iterative-adaptive multichannel technique, and employs exact leading order matrix elements. The code can generate unweighted events for any subset of all available final states. The produced parton-level events carry full information on their colour and flavour structure, enabling the evolution of the partons into fully hadronised final states. We briefly illustrate the impact of the genuinely weak one-loop virtual terms of the ${\cal O}(\alpha_{\rm S}\alpha_{\rm EW}^3)$ factorisable corrections to the three-jet cross section at $\sqrt s=M_Z$. This report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 26 May - 6 June 2003. After a Monte Guide description, the first contributions report on progress in describing multiple interactions, important for the LHC, and underlying events. An announcement of a Monte Carlo database, under construction, is then followed by a number of contributions improving parton shower descriptions. Subsequently, a large number of contributions address resummations in various forms, after which follow studies of QCD effects in pion pair, top quark pair and photon pair plus jet production. After a study of electroweak corrections to hadronic precision observables, the report ends by presenting recent progress in methods to compute finite order corrections at one-loop with many legs, and at two-loop., Comment: 119pp

We illustrate the effects of one-loop weak corrections onto the production of neutral gauge bosons of the Standard Model at RHIC-Spin, Tevatron and LHC, in presence of quark/gluon radiation from the initial state. We investigate one-loop weak corrections to the production cross section of two $b$-jets at Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We establish that they are small at inclusive level but dominant in exclusive observables that have a non-trivial dependence on the helicity structure of the hard subprocesses. Such effects can serve as a test of the Standard Model (SM) and, conversely, they should be taken into account in future experimental analyses aiming at extracting possible signals of new physics., Comment: 12 pages, latex, 3 figures

We report on the calculation of the factorisable one-loop weak-interaction corrections to the initial and final states for three-jet observables in electron-positron annihilations. We show that such corrections are of a few percent at $\sqrt s=M_Z$. Hence, while their impact is not dramatic in the context of LEP1 and SLC, where the total error on the measured value of $\alpha_{\mathrm{S}}$ is larger, at a future Linear Collider, running at the $Z$ mass peak (e.g., GigaZ), they ought to be taken into account in the experimental fits, as here the uncertainty on the value of the strong coupling constant is expected to be at the 0.1% level or even smaller. WPHACT 2.0 is the new fully massive version of a MC program and unweighted event generator which computes all Standard Model processes with four fermions in the final state at e^+ e^- colliders. The program can now generate unweighted events for any subset of all four fermion final states in a single run, by making use of dedicated pre-samples which can cover the entire phase space. Improvements with respect to WPHACT 1.0 include the Imaginary Fermion Loop gauge restoring scheme, new phase space mappings, a new input system, the possibility to compute subsets of Feynman diagrams and options for including ISR via QEDPS, running alpha_{QED}, CKM mixing, resonances in q bar(q) channels., Comment: 38 pages, 5 figure: Version to be published in Comp.Phys.Comm

We analyse the impact of systematic effects due to the scale dependence of QCD corrections in combination with the use of different jet clustering algorithms in the measurement of the $W^\pm$ mass in the fully hadronic decay mode of $W^+W^-$ pairs produced at LEP2. We consider higher order contributions induced by both virtual and real gluon radiation onto the electroweak CC03 and CC11 channels through ${\cal O}(\alpha_{s})$ at the parton level. We find that the associated uncertainties can be of order 100 MeV, thus competitive with those possibly arising in the non-perturbative regime and indeed above the current experimental estimates., Comment: 16 pages, latex, 4 figures, version to appear in EPJdirectC

This report summarises the results of the four-fermion working group of the LEP2-MC workshop, held at CERN from 1999 to 2000. Recent developments in the calculation of four-fermion processes in electron-positron collisions at LEP-2 centre-of-mass energies are presented, concentrating on predictions for four main reactions: W-pair production, visible photons in four-fermion events, single-W production and Z-pair production. The W Mass and QCD Working Group discussed a wide variety of topics relating to present and future measurements of M(W) at LEP2, including QCD backgrounds to W+W- production. We compute complete tree level matrix elements for $gg , q \bar q \rightarrow b \bar b W^+W^-$. We analyze the irreducible backgrounds to top signal at the Tevatron and at the LHC. Their contribution to the total cross section is about $5 \%$ at the LHC, due to single resonant channels. An important issue in the direct reconstruction method of determining the $W$ mass from $q\bar q Q\bar Q$ events at LEP2 concerns the impact of the relatively unknown QCD interconnection effects. It has been suggested that a study of `short string' states, in which colour singlet states are formed from $q \bar Q $ and $Q\bar q$ pairs with small phase--space separation, could shed important light on this issue. We show that such configurations can also be generated by conventional background $e^+e^-\ar 4$~parton processes, in particular QCD $q \bar q g g$ and $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ and non--resonant electroweak $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ production. We study the colour and kinematic structure of these background contributions, and estimate the event rate to be expected at LEP2. We present complete results for the $O(\alpha_s)$ corrections to the production of a heavy quark pair plus a hard photon, in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation, including both photon and $Z$ intermediate states. Virtual corrections are calculated analytically in $4 - 2 \epsilon$ dimensions, together with the soft approximation to the real emission diagrams. After cancellation of infrared divergences, real and virtual contributions are combined numerically to obtain the cross section for the production of two heavy quark jets plus a hard photon in next-to-leading order. The resulting fully differential cross section can be used to construct arbitrary distributions with the desired experimental cuts., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX

Previous studies of the physics potential of LEP2 indicated that with the design luminosity of 500 inverse picobarn one may get a direct measurement of the mass of the W-boson with a precision in the range 30 - 50 MeV. This report presents an updated evaluation of the estimated error on the mass of the W-boson based on recent simulation work and improved theoretical input. We examine the colour structure and charged particle yield for both the $t \bar t$ signal and the irreducible background processes contributing to \eebbww\ production close to the \ttb\ threshold. The charged particle multiplicity for the various components of the cross section is computed as a function of several kinematic variables. QCD corrections to $e^+e^- \ra WW \ra q_1 \bar q_1 q_2 \bar q_2$ are computed and presented in a form which allows to impose realistic cuts on the structure of the observed events. QCD radiation substantially modifies the jet--jet invariant mass distributions from which the value of the $W$ mass will be extracted. When the range of allowed jet--jet masses is restricted, as it has been proposed in order to suppress non--$WW$ backgrounds, the total cross section is also deeply affected. If all events are forced to four jets, combining the two partons with smallest invariant mass, and the reconstructed masses are required to satisfy $ \left| M_{Ri} -M_W \right| \le 10$ GeV $i$=1,2 the lowest order cross section can be reduced by more than 40\%., Comment: One ref. fixed. 15 LaTex pages, 2 figs in a uuencoded gz-compressed tar file

Six--jet events via WW pairs, $e^+e^- \ar W^+W^- \ar q_1 \overline{q_1} q_2 \overline{q_2} g g$ are studied at tree level using helicity amplitudes. This is the dominant production mechanism for six--jet final states at Lep II energy. ISR effects are taken into account. Total production rates as a function of $y_{cut}$ are given. The relevance of these processes for the issue of colour reconnection is discussed. The complete matrix element for $e^+e^-\ar b\bar bW^+W^-$ has been computed at tree--level and applied to $Z^0H^0$ production followed by $Z^0\ar b\bar b$ and $H^0\ar W^+W^-$, keeping into account all irreducible backgrounds, which are dominated by \ttb production, at the Next Linear Colliders. An helicity formalism for perturbative calculations is presented. It is based on the formal insertion in spinor lines of a complete set of states built up with unphysical spinors. It is particularly convenient when massive spinors are present. We propose a new helicity formalism based on the formal insertion in spinor lines of a complete set of states build up with unphysical spinors. Heavy quark production in five jet events at $e^+e^-$ colliders is studied at tree level using helicity amplitudes. We study the cross sections for the production of a neutral, intermediate mass Higgs boson in the processes $pp\rightarrow tq'\Phi$, $pp\rightarrow tW^-\Phi$ and $pp\rightarrow bZ^0\Phi$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model ($\Phi=H^0,h^0$ and $A^0$) at Supercollider energies. The additional heavy particles ($t$, $W$, $Z$) in the final state can be used for tagging purposes, increasing the signal to background ratio. These reactions are dominated by $bq$ and $bg$ fusion. Their relevance for Higgs particle searches is discussed taking into account the expected efficiencies and purities for $b$--tagging. We find that, for tan$\beta = 30$, the cross sections for $pp\rightarrow bZ^0\Phi$ are larger than 14 $pb$, over the whole intemediate range of $M_{A^0}$, for $A^0$ and at least one of the other two Higgses. Pion Compton scattering is studied in perturbative QCD for real and space--like initial photons. The production of photon pairs in $e^+e^-\rightarrow f \bar f \gamma\gamma$ processes is studied using exact helicity amplitudes at tree level. Total cross sections, including initial state radiation effects, are given. They are presented in the case of quarks as a function of $y_{\rm cut}$ in the JADE algorithm. In the case of leptons we use cuts similar to the ones employed in a recent L3 analysis. Masses of the final state fermions are taken into account when appropriate. The cross section $e^+e^-\rightarrow \tau^+ \tau^- \gamma\gamma$ is about 10\% larger when the $\tau$ mass is neglected.
