Abstract

Vanadium dioxide undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) from an insulating (monoclinic) to a metallic (tetragonal) phase close to room temperature, which makes it a promising functional material for many applications, e.g. as chemical sensors. Not much is known about its surface and interface properties, although these are critical in many of its applications. This work presents an atomic-scale investigation of the tetragonal rutile VO$_2$(110)$_\text{T}$ single-crystal surface and reports results obtained with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), supported by density-functional theory-based (DFT) calculations. The surface reconstructs into an oxygen-rich (2$\times$2) superstructure that coexists with small patches of the underlying, unreconstructed (110)-(1$\times$1) surface. The best structural model for the (2$\times$2) surface termination, conceptually derived from a vanadium pentoxide (001) monolayer, consists of rings of corner-shared tetrahedra. Over a wide range of oxygen chemical potentials this reconstruction is more stable than the unreconstructed (110) surface as well as models proposed in the literature.

Abstract

Group 15 elements in zero oxidation state (P, As, Sb and Bi), also called pnictogens, are rarely used in catalysis due to the difficulties associated in preparing well-structured and stable materials. Here, we report on the synthesis of highly exfoliated, few layer 2D phosphorene and antimonene in zero oxidation state, suspended in an ionic liquid, with the native atoms ready to interact with external reagents while avoiding aerobic or aqueous decomposition pathways, and on their use as efficient catalysts for the alkylation of nucleophiles with esters. The few layer pnictogen material circumvents the extremely harsh reaction conditions associated to previous superacid-catalyzed alkylations, by enabling an alternative mechanism on surface, protected from the water and air by the ionic liquid. These 2D catalysts allow the alkylation of a variety of acid-sensitive organic molecules and giving synthetic relevancy to the use of simple esters as alkylating agents.

Abstract

Background: In MR‐guided in‐bore percutaneous needle interventions, typically 2D interactive real‐time imaging is used for navigating the needle into the target. Misaligned 2D imaging planes can result in losing visibility of the needle in the 2D images, which impedes successful targeting. Necessary iterative manual slice adjustment can prolong interventional workflows. Therefore, rapid automatic alignment of the imaging planes with the needle would be preferable to improve such workflows. Purpose: To investigate rapid 3D localization of needles in MR‐guided interventions via a convolutional neural network (CNN)‐based localization algorithm using an undersampled white‐marker contrast acquisition for the purpose of automatic imaging slice alignment. Methods: A radial 3D rf‐spoiled gradient echo MR pulse sequence with white‐marker encoding was implemented and a CNN‐based localization algorithm was employed to extract position and orientation of an aspiration needle from the undersampled white‐marker images. The CNN was trained using porcine tissue phantoms (257 needle trajectories, four‐fold data augmentation, 90%/10% split into training and validation dataset). Achievable localization times and accuracy were evaluated retrospectively in an ex vivo study (109 needle trajectories) for a range of needle orientations between 78° and 90° relative to the B0 field. A proof‐of‐concept in vivo experiment was performed in two porcine animal models and feasibility of automatic imaging slice alignment was evaluated retrospectively. Results: Ex vivo needle localization was achieved with a median localization accuracy of 1.9 mm (distance needle tip to detected needle axis) and a median angular deviation of 2.6° for needle orientations between 86° and 90° to the B0 field from fully sampled WM images (resolution of (4 mm)3, 6434 acquired radial k‐space spokes, acquisition time of 80.4 s) in a field‐of‐view of (256 mm)3. Localization accuracy decreased with increasing undersampling and needle trajectory increasingly aligned with B0. For needle orientations between 86° and 90° to the B0 field, a highly accelerated acquisition of only 32 k‐space spokes (acquisition time of 0.4 s) yielded a median localization accuracy of 3.1 mm and a median angular deviation of 4.7°. For needle orientations between 78° and 82° to the B0 field, a median accuracy and angular deviation of 3.5 mm and 6.8° could still be achieved with 64 sampled spokes (acquisition time of 0.8 s). In vivo, a localization accuracy of 1.4 mm and angular deviation of 3.4° was achieved sampling 32 k‐space spokes (acquisition time of 0.48 s) with the needle oriented at 87.7° to the B0 field. For a needle oriented at 77.6° to the B0 field, localization accuracy of 5.3 mm and angular deviation of 6.8° were still achieved sampling 128 k‐space spokes (acquisition time of 1.92 s), allowing for retrospective slice alignment. Conclusion: The investigated approach enables passive biopsy needle localization in 3D. Acceleration of the localization to real‐time applicability is feasible for needle orientations approximately perpendicular to B0. Abstract

The use of homogeneous catalysts dissolved in ionic liquids (ILs) is an established field of research. Thin IL films containing dissolved catalyst complexes can be immobilized on solid porous supports, thereby creating a heterogenized catalyst material. Aiming at the deliberate positioning of such supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalyst, we carried out investigations of two very similar Pt‐complexes: depending on the ligand periphery, the first one is homogeneously dissolved in the IL while the second one strongly enriches at the gas/IL interface. To study these different locations within thick IL films of approximately 1 mm thickness, we investigated the hydrogenation of ethene in a continuous pool‐reactor setup. The two complexes dissolved in the IL [C4C1Im][PF6] showed different activity which can be attributed to their different locations. At 313 K and 0.62 MPa total pressure, the surface‐enriched complex was approximately two times more active. However, under these conditions the formation of Pt particles could be observed, with the surface‐enriched complex exhibiting a stronger tendency for particle formation compared to the one homogeneously distributed in the IL, as derived from XPS and light‐scattering measurements.
