The void is the key element of the urban configuration: an empty space identified by the work of man or nature, which is defined and transformed by civic, religious, and social events. It is the people moving, talking, living in the streets and squares, and identifying with the landscape which actually transforms geometrically or naturally defined spaces into cultural spaces. It is from here that we would move towards the proposal of an integrated approach to the study of cultural heritage in its substance, made of elements that are both tangible and intangible such as the spirit of places, celebrations, traditional skills, and the social memory of the urban spaces, which have been shaped by humanity through time. Today, a crucial and innovative contribution to the approach sharped above is the practical possibility of direct involvement of the community, using innovative technologies, to map all the aspects and elements of their cultural heritage: as flexible, interactive maps (GIS-based) for the organization of different types of data about historic urban buildings and spaces, with specific reference to the strong links between tangible and intangible heritage.

This article describes a multimedia interactive map developed as sample for the municipality of Kyoto, based on a single HTML page using AJAX, with a client-side control mechanism using jQuery components. The application supports better connections between resources and the places they refer to: the user could select a Point of Interest (PoI) through its multimedia contents using their previews (in a gallery or in a tile window) or their names reported in a list. PoIs-visualized on the map with multi-shape markers using a set of unambiguous colors-could be filtered through their categories and types, accessibility status and time line, thus improving the system usability.

This article describes a novel Internet-based cultural heritage (CH) application, a multimedia interactive map with various user-friendly functions that allow users to find results according to their needs. Usually, the user selects a Point of Interest (PoI) to navigate a map, selecting it from a list or through a search function, as illustrated in the four cases studied here. The developed application allows the user to select a PoI and also view the previews of its multimedia contents (using the 'Folder', 'Tile' and 'Table' functions). Moreover, filtering functions--such as century (using the time slider), period, physical accessibility level and multimedia type (using the filter panel)-- improve the system usability. Finally, PoIs are visualised on the map with multi-shape markers using a set of colours unambiguous to both colour-blind and non-colour-blind people. The interface is illustrated using data acquired from the Municipality of Cetinje (Montenegro). The software components are also illustrated, which contain useful information to other developers.

Le problematiche legate alla valorizzazione dei beni culturali trovano nelle tecnologie GIS e nelle applicazioni Web un valido strumento per avviare processi e interventi di conservazione e manutenzione, ma soprattutto per coinvolgere il maggior numero di utenti potenzialmente interessati alla loro fruizione. Un "utilizzo" coerente (in quanto basato sulla conoscenza) del bene può innescare infatti dinamiche di rivitalizzazione, in termini di identità ma anche in senso economico, non solo della specifica risorsa (in un processo di autosostentamento delle attività di conservazione) ma anche del territorio nel suo complesso. Con il presente contributo si illustrano i risultati raggiunti nell'implementazione del WebGIS denominato S.I.T.I. Ofanto (www.iris.ba.cnr.it/ofanto), sviluppato nell'ambito del progetto "Valorizzazione dei beni culturali e ambientali della Valle dell'Ofanto" finanziato dal MIUR (L488/1992) - Cluster Beni Culturali.
