Due to the magnetostriction effect, a magnetic material changes its dimensions when it is magnetized. In this work, we show how in a magnetostrictive bilayer structure comprising two materials with magnetostriction constants of opposite signs, the magnetic switching is affected by magnetoelastic coupling. While the layer with positive magnetostriction tries to elongate in the direction of the applied magnetic field, the layer with negative magnetostriction tries to contract. In the studied bilayers, the mechanical influence of each magnetostrictive layer on the other is of the opposite sign because of their opposite magnetostrictive constants. Since magnetoelasticity is not an interfacial interaction but an intrinsic property of magnetic materials, the mechanical strain promoted by the applied magnetic field affects the layers as a whole. The net effect is a simultaneous reversal of magnetization of the two layers regardless of their thicknesses. This behavior has been studied in bilayers with different thickness ratios comprising Ni
90 Fe10 , negative magnetostriction and Fe70 Ga30 , positive magnetostriction. These results demonstrate the possibility of using this physical mechanism to beat the critical limit thickness imposed by interfacial interactions in magnetically coupled multilayers in such a way that the magnetization reversal is made in unison regardless of the layer thickness. Inhibitors of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) are currently used to treat advanced metastatic breast cancer. However, whether an aggressive phenotype is sustained through adaptation or resistance to mTOR inhibition remains unknown. Here, complementary studies in human tumors, cancer models and cell lines reveal transcriptional reprogramming that supports metastasis in response to mTOR inhibition. This cancer feature is driven by EVI1 and SOX9. EVI1 functionally cooperates with and positively regulates SOX9, and promotes the transcriptional upregulation of key mTOR pathway components (REHB and RAPTOR) and of lung metastasis mediators (FSCN1 and SPARC). The expression of EVI1 and SOX9 is associated with stem cell-like and metastasis signatures, and their depletion impairs the metastatic potential of breast cancer cells. These results establish the mechanistic link between resistance to mTOR inhibition and cancer metastatic potential, thus enhancing our understanding of mTOR targeting failure.

- Abstract
Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composites present outstanding physical and chemical properties, including radiation tolerance and compatibility with vacuum and additive manufacturing processing. Applications of PEEK range from biomedical to aerospace. Controlled 3-D nanostructuring arises as a powerful approach to generate new phenomena suitable for technological applications. In this sense, we target to synthesize robust and shapeable magnetic nanocomposites (NCs) for sensing and electromagnetic shielding applications. For this aim, we synthesized and characterized Permalloy (Py, Ni80Fe20) nanostructured surfaces on PEEK/TiO2. These NCs were synthesized by scalable and high throughput compatible fabrication approaches: anodization (TiO2 nanotubes) and hot embossing (thermal nanoimprint). The resulting NCs are shapeable, stable below 300 °C, and vacuum compatible. Their surfaces compose TiO2 nanodomes filled by PEEK. Py layers (15 nm) were sputtered on NC and flat PEEK films. The characterization included SEM, AFM, ISO-2409 Adhesion Tests, hysteresis loops, and first-order reversal curves (FORCs). The results revealed that both types of films keep stable characteristics after bending cycles, and noticeable modifications of the magnetic global response and local interactions generated due to the 3-D nanostructure.

- Abstract
Aim To assess the safety and tolerability of adjuvant subcutaneous trastuzumab (Herceptin® SC, H SC), delivered from an H SC Vial via hand-held syringe (Cohort A) or single-use injection device (Cohort B), with or without chemotherapy, for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive stage I to IIIC early breast cancer (EBC) in the phase III SafeHer study (NCT01566721). Methods Patients received 600 mg fixed-dose H SC every 3 weeks for 18 cycles. The chemotherapy partner was at the investigators' discretion (H SC monotherapy was limited to ≤10% of the population). Data from the first H SC dose until 28 days (plus a 5-day window) after the last dose are presented. Results are descriptive. Results In the overall population, 2282/2573 patients (88.7%) experienced adverse events (AEs). Of the above, 128 (5.0%) patients experienced AEs leading to study drug discontinuation; 596 (23.2%) experienced grade ≥ 3 AEs and 326 (12.7%) experienced serious AEs. Grade ≥ 3 cardiac disorders were reported in 24 patients (0.9%), including congestive heart failure in eight (0.3%). As expected, the AE rates varied according to the timing of chemotherapy in both cohorts, with higher rates in concurrent versus sequential chemotherapy subgroups. In the concurrent chemotherapy subgroup, AEs were more common during the actual period of concurrent chemotherapy compared with the period when patients did not receive concurrent chemotherapy. Conclusion SafeHer confirms the safety and tolerability of the H SC 600 mg fixed dose for 1 year (every 3 weeks for 18 cycles) as adjuvant therapy with concurrent or sequential chemotherapy for HER2-positive EBC. These primary analysis results are consistent with the known safety profile for intravenous H and H SC.

- Abstract

The magnetic and electrical properties of Permalloy/gadolinium/Permalloy (Py/Gd/Py) trilayers are studied as a function of temperature by using vibrating sample magnetometer and transport measurements with current in plane configuration. The Curie temperature of the [Gd.sub.1-x][Ni.sub.x] alloys are obtained by the position of inflexion points in the resistance versus temperature curve.

The focus of this paper is the study of cation distributions and resulting magnetizations in titanomagnetites (TMs), (1-x)Fe
3 O4-x Fe2 TiO4 solid solutions. TM remnant states are hypothesized to contribute to planetary magnetic field anomalies. This work correlates experimental data with proposed models for the TM pseudobinary. Improved synthesis procedures are reported for single phase Ulvöspinel (Fe2 TiO4 ), and TM solid solutions were made using solid state synthesis techniques. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy show samples to be single phase solid solutions. M-H curves of TM75, 80, 85, 90, and 95 (TMX where X=at.% of ulvöspinel) were measured using a Physical Property Measurement System at 10 K, in fields of 0 to 8 T. The saturation magnetization was found to be close to that predicted by the Neel model for cation distribution in TMs. M-T curves of the remnant magnetization were measured from 10K to 350 K. The remnant magnetization was acquired at 10K by applying an 8 T field and then releasing the field. Experimental Neel temperatures are reported for samples in the Neel model ground state. In this work, we report the magnetic properties of sputtered Permalloy (Py: Ni80Fe20)/molybdenum (Mo) multilayer thin films. We show that it is possible to maintain a low coercivity and a high permeability in thick sputtered Py films when reducing the out-of-plane component of the anisotropy by inserting thin film spacers of a non-magnetic material like Mo. For these kind of multilayers, we have found coercivities which are close to those for single layer films with no out-of-plane anisotropy. The coercivity is also dependent on the number of layers exhibiting a minimum value when each single Py layer has a thickness close to the transition thickness between Neel and Bloch domain walls. - Abstract
© the Partner Organisations 2014. We report a comparison of the magnetic properties of Fe53CO47 grown with DC and pulsed DC (PDC) sputtering sources. While no remarkable differences concerning the structure and composition are found, films grown using the PDC source exhibit reduced coercivity by several times compared to the samples grown using the DC source under similar conditions. In addition, PDC films exhibit hard axis rocking effects and a better defined anisotropy axis. By means of EXAFS, we have measured the atomic distances in the FeCo matrix and bcc-Co clusters. We show that the small changes within the FeCo matrix are directly related to the reduction in coercivity. The tuning of these properties by simply choosing the source or the power opens a simple path to tailor the magnetic properties. This journal is

- Abstract
The exchange interaction of Gd adjacent to Fe has been characterized by transport measurements on a double spin valve with a Fe/Gd/Fe trilayer as the middle layer. Our measurements show that the ferromagnetism of the Gd is enhanced by the presence of the Fe, and it remains ferromagnetic over its Curie temperature up to a thickness no smaller than 1 nm adjacent to the Fe. This thickness is more than double what has been reported before. Additionally, the saturation magnetization of the thin Gd layer sandwiched in Fe was found to be half of its bulk value. This reduced magnetization does not seem to be related to the proximity of Fe but rather to the incomplete saturation of Gd even for very high fields.

Conference Location: Venice, Italy The number of missions devoted to the measurement of the magnetic field has dramatically decreased since the 80s, being the decrease in number accompanied by a reduction in the mass and economic budget of many of the exploration missions. This scenario was the seed for a new generation of sensors: the Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) based microsensors. In the particular case of magnetometers, these miniaturized and compact devices imported a traditional problem of geomagnetic missions: the magnetic cleanliness trouble. Magnetic cleanliness, which is isolated in the platform when the magnetometer is deployed in a boom, becomes a real trouble when it has to be considered at Printed Circuit Board (PCB) level. In this work we present the description, method and results of a finite elements model for an engineering prototype of a NANOSAT-01 two axis magnetic sensor, launched in 2004. The idea is to extrapolate this method for all subsystems of a satellite. This work has been partially supported by the Spanish Nacional Program of R&D externalization via the projects of references PRI-PIBUS-2011–1150 and PRI-PIBUS-2011-1182. Ana Belén Fernández acknowledges INTA for the scholarship she enjoys. Authors acknowledge Prof. Claudio Aroca for his help with the magnetizing magnetic circuit design. Peerreview
