Organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) are a class of flame retardants and environmental pollutants with various biological effects. Recentstudies have evidenced activation of some PFRs by human CYP enzymes (including CYP2E1) for genotoxic effects. However, the activity of CYPs in fish species toward PFR metabolism remains unclear. This study was aimed on comparing the metabolism of triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and 4-OH-TPHP in human, rat, and common carp, and the involvement of human CYP2E1 and its orthologs in the metabolism, by using fomepizole (4-MP, CYP2E1 inhibitor) as a modulator, in silico molecular docking and dynamics analyses. The rate of TPHP metabolism was apparently faster with human and rat, microsomes than with fish microsomes, the major metabolites were phosphodiester and hydroxylated phosphate, with 30-80 % of TPHP forming unidentified metabolites in the system of each species. 4-OH-TPHP was readily metabolized by both human and rat microsomes, whereas it was hardly metabolized in carp assays. Meanwhile, with 4-MP the transformation of TPHP to 4-OH-TPHP was enhanced in the human/rat systems while suppressed in the carp system. Moreover, the formation of unidentified metabolites in human and rat systems was mostly inhibited by 4-MP. Through molecular dynamics analysis TPHP and its primary metabolites showed high affinity for human and rat CYP2E1, as well as the carp ortholog (CYP2G1-like enzyme), however, the 4-OH-TPHP bond to the latter was too far from the heme to permit a biochemical reaction. Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are emerging organic pollutants due to their potential persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation. This study first characterized the levels and compositions of 19 LCMs in organisms in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), estimated their bioaccumulation and trophic transfer potential, and identified priority contaminants. LCMs were generally accumulated in organisms from sediment, and the LCM concentrations in all organisms ranged from 32.35 to 1367 ng/g lipid weight. The main LCMs in organisms were biphenyls and analogues (BAs) (76.6%), followed by cyanobiphenyls and analogues (CBAs) (15.1%), and the least were fluorinated biphenyls and analogues (FBAs) (11.2%). The most abundant LCM monomers of BAs, FBAs, and CBAs in LCMs in organisms were 1-(4-propylcyclohexyl)-4-vinylcyclohexane (15.1%), 1-ethoxy-2,3-difluoro-4-(4-(4-propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl) benzene (EDPBB, 10.1%), and 4'-propoxy-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5.1%), respectively. The niche studies indicated that the PRE food web was composed of terrestrial-based diet and marine food chains. Most LCMs exhibited biodilution in the terrestrial-based diet and marine food chains, except for EDPBB and 4,4'-bis(4-propylcyclohexyl) biphenyl (BPCHB). The hydrophobicity, position of fluorine substitution of LCMs, and biological habits may be important factors affecting the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of LCMs. BPCHB, 1-(prop-1-enyl)-4-(4-propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexane, and EDPBB were characterized as priority contaminants. This study first reports the trophic transfer processes and mechanisms of LCMs and the biomonitoring in PRE.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their alternatives (e.g., dechlorane plus (DPs) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE)) are ubiquitous in various environmental media. However, limited data is available on these chemicals in edible fish species from the wide-open South China Sea (SCS). In the present study, ten legacy PBDEs and three substitutions (DBDPE and two DPs) were analyzed in 16 wild fish species sampled from the open SCS to investigate their spatial and species-specific variations. The results showed that the total concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, and DPs in fish samples were in the range of 1.69-47.6, not detected (nd) to 21.0, and nd to 3.80 ng/g lipid weight (lw), respectively. BDEs 47, 209 and 100 were the dominant target PBDE congeners, representing 49.2%, 17.2% and 9.93% of the total PBDE concentrations, respectively. Higher concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, and DPs were found in fish species from the Wanshan Archipelago compared to those from the Mischief Reef and the Yongxing Island, suggesting the significant influence of anthropogenic activities. Species-specific differences in levels of PBDEs were observed, with the order of bathydemersal > demersal > pelagic ≈ reef-associated > benthopelagic species. The average f anti value of all fish samples was 0.68, suggesting commercial DP products as a contamination source. The levels of PBDEs, DPs, and DBDPE in fish samples were relatively low compared with those from other locations around the globe. Surface particulates collected from the workshop floors of three major e-waste recycling sites (Taizhou, Qingyuan, and Guiyu) in China were analyzed for tetrabromobisphenol A/S (TBBPA/S) and their derivatives to investigate the environmental pollution caused by e-waste recycling activities. Mean concentrations of total TBBPA/S analogs in surface particulates were 31,471-116,059 ng/g dry weight (dw). TBBPA, TBBPA-BGE, and TBBPA-BDBPE were the most frequently detected in particulates with average concentration ranges of 17,929-78,406, 5601-15,842, and 5929-21,383 ng/g dw, respectively. Meanwhile, TBBPA, TBBPA-BGE, and TBBPA-BDBPE were the most abundant TBBPA/S analogs, accounting for around 96% of the total. The composition profiles of TBBPA/S analogs differed significantly among three e-waste sites. Similarly, principal component analysis uncovered different pollution patterns among different sites. The discrepancy in the profiles of TBBPA/S analogs largely relied on the e-waste types recycled in different areas. E-waste recycling led to the release of TBBPA/S analogs, and TBBPA/S analogs produced differentiation during migration from source (surface particulates) to nearby soil. Persistent organic pollutants pose a great threat to amphibian populations, but information on the bioaccumulation of contaminants in amphibians remains scarce. To examine the tissue distribution and maternal transfer of organic halogenated pollutants (OHPs) in frogs, seven types of tissues from black-spotted frog (muscle, liver, kidney, stomach, intestine, heart, and egg) were collected from an e-waste-polluted area in South China. Among the seven frog tissues, median total OHP concentrations of 2.3 to 9.7 μg/g lipid weight were found (in 31 polychlorinated biphenyl [PCB] individuals and 15 polybrominated diphenyl ether [PBDE], dechlorane plus [syn-DP and anti-DP], bexabromobenzene [HBB], polybrominated biphenyl] PBB153 and -209], and decabromodiphenyl ethane [DBDPE] individuals). Sex-specific differences in contaminant concentration and compound compositions were observed among the frog tissues, and eggs had a significantly higher contaminant burden on the whole body of female frogs. In addition, a significant sex difference in the concentration ratios of other tissues to the liver was observed in most tissues except for muscle. These results suggest that egg production may involve the mobilization of other maternal tissues besides muscle, which resulted in the sex-specific distribution. Different parental tissues had similar maternal transfer mechanisms; factors other than lipophilicity (e.g., molecular size and proteinophilic characteristics) could influence the maternal transfer of OHPs in frogs. Background: N,N'-disubstituted p-phenylenediamine-quinones (PPDQs) are oxidization derivatives of p-phenylenediamines (PPDs) and have raised extensive concerns recently, due to their toxicities and prevalence in the environment, particularly in water environment. PPDQs are derived from tire rubbers, in which other PPD oxidization products besides reported PPDQs may also exist, e.g., unknown PPDQs and PPD-phenols (PPDPs)., Results: This study implemented nontarget analysis and profiling for PPDQ/Ps in aged tire rubbers using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry and a species-specific algorithm. The algorithm took into account the ionization behaviors of PPDQ/Ps in both positive and negative electrospray ionization, and their specific carbon isotopologue distributions. A total of 47 formulas of PPDQ/Ps were found and elucidated with tentative or accurate structures, including 25 PPDQs, 18 PPDPs and 4 PPD-hydroxy-quinones (PPDHQs). The semiquantified total concentrations of PPDQ/Ps were 14.08-30.62 μg/g, and the concentrations followed the order as: PPDPs (6.48-17.39) > PPDQs (5.86-12.14) > PPDHQs (0.16-1.35 μg/g)., Significance: The high concentrations and potential toxicities indicate that these PPDQ/Ps could seriously threaten the eco-environment, as they may finally enter the environment, accordingly requiring further investigation. A significant challenge that warrants attention is the influence of eutrophication on the biogeochemical cycle of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments. Antibiotics pollution in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China was examined to offer new insights into the effects of eutrophication on the occurrence, air-water exchange fluxes (F air-water ), and vertical sinking fluxes (F sinking ) of antibiotics. Antibiotics transferred to the atmosphere primarily through aerosolization controlled by phytoplankton biomass and significant spatiotemporal variations were observed in the F air-water of individual antibiotics throughout all sites and seasons. The F sinking of ∑AB 14 (defined as a summary of 14 antibiotics) was 750.46 ± 283.19, 242.71 ± 122.87, and 346.74 ± 249.52 ng of m -2 d -1 in spring, summer, and winter seasons. Eutrophication indirectly led to an elevated pH, which reduced seasonal F air-water of antibiotics, sediment aromaticity, and phytoplankton hydrophobicity, thereby decreasing antibiotic accumulation in sediments and phytoplankton. Negative correlations were further found between F sinking and the water column daily loss of antibiotics with phytoplankton biomass. The novelty of this study is to provide new complementary knowledge for the regulation mechanisms of antibiotics by phytoplankton biological pump, offering novel perspectives and approaches to understanding the coupling between eutrophication and migration and fate of antibiotics in a subtropical eutrophic river.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated the embryonic and developmental toxicity of plasticizers. Thus, understanding the in utero biotransformation and accumulation of plasticizers is essential to assessing their fate and potential toxicity in early life. In the present study, 311 infant hair samples and 271 paired meconium samples were collected at birth in Guangzhou, China, to characterize fetal exposure to legacy and emerging plasticizers and their metabolites. Results showed that most of the target plasticizers were detected in infant hair, with medians of 9.30, 27.6, and 0.145 ng/g for phthalate esters (PAEs), organic phosphate ester (OPEs), and alternative plasticizers (APs), and 1.44, 0.313, and 0.066 ng/g for the metabolites of PAEs, OPEs, and APs, respectively. Positive correlations between plasticizers and their corresponding primary metabolites, as well as correlations among the oxidative metabolites of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and 1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid diisononyl ester (DINCH), were observed, indicating that infant hair retained the major phase-I metabolism of the target plasticizers. While no positive correlations were found in parent compounds or their primary metabolites between paired infant hair and meconium, significant positive correlations were observed among secondary oxidative metabolites of DEHP and DINCH in hair and meconium, suggesting that the primary metabolites in meconium come from hydrolysis of plasticizers in the fetus but most of the oxidative metabolites come from maternal-fetal transmission. The parent compound/metabolite ratios in infant hair showed a decreasing trend across pregnancy, suggesting in utero accumulation and deposition of plasticizers. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report in utero exposure to both parent compounds and metabolites of plasticizers by using paired infant hair and meconium as noninvasive biomonitoring matrices and provides novel insights into the fetal biotransformation and accumulation of plasticizers across pregnancy.

Attention has been drawn to the associations between PFASs and human cognitive decline. However, knowledge on the occurrence and permeability of PFASs in the brains of patients with cognitive impairment has not been reported. Here, we determined 30 PFASs in paired sera and cerebrospinal fluids (CSFs) from patients with cognitive impairment ( n = 41) and controls without cognitive decline ( n = 18). We revealed similar serum PFAS levels but different CSF PFAS levels, with lower CSF PFOA (median: 0.125 vs 0.303 ng/mL, p < 0.05), yet higher CSF PFOS (0.100 vs 0.052 ng/mL, p < 0.05) in patients than in controls. Blood-brain transfer rates also showed lower R CSF/Serum values for PFOA and higher R CSF/Serum values for PFOS in patients, implying potential heterogeneous associations with cognitive function. The R CSF/Serum values for C4-C14 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates exhibited a U -shape trend with increasing chain length. Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that CSF PFOS levels were linked to the heightened risk of cognitive impairment [odds ratio: 3.22 (1.18-11.8)] but not for serum PFOS. Toxicity inference results based on the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database suggested that PFOS in CSF may have a greater potential to impair human cognition than other PFASs. Our results contribute to a better understanding of brain PFAS exposure and its potential impact on cognitive function.

Organophosphate triesters (tri-OPEs) are a kind of widespread contaminants in the world, particularly in China, which is a major producer and user of tri-OPEs. However, tri-OPE pollution in urban river sediments in China remains unclear. In current work, we carried out the first nationwide investigation to comprehensively monitor 10 conventional and five emerging tri-OPEs in sediments of 173 black-odorous urban rivers throughout China. Concentrations of 10 conventional and five emerging tri-OPEs were 3.8-1240 ng/g dw (mean: 253 ng/g dw) and 0.21-1107 ng/g dw (68 ng/g dw), respectively, and significantly differed among the cities sampled but generally decreased from Northeast and East China to Central and West China. These spatial patterns suggest that tri-OPE pollution was mainly from local sources and was controlled by the industrial and economic development levels in these four areas, as indicated by the significant correlations between tri-OPE concentrations and gross domestic production, gross industrial output, and daily wastewater treatment capacity. Although the tri-OPE composition varied spatially at different sites, which indicated different tri-OPE input patterns, it was commonly dominated by tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (conventional tri-OPEs) and bisphenol A-bis(diphenyl phosphate) and isodecyl diphenyl phosphate (emerging tri-OPEs). Human skin wipes from 30 participants, air, dust, and food items were collected from a former electronic waste site in South China to provide a comprehensive understanding of residents' exposure to halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The total concentration of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in the dust, air, food and skin wipes ranged 240-25000 ng/g, 130-2500 pg/m 3 , 0.08-590 ng/g wet weight, and 69-28000 ng/m 2 , respectively. Wild fish, vegetables, and air were dominated by PCBs, whereas dust, livestock, and poultry were dominated by HFRs. The HOP concentrations were several orders of magnitude higher in local foodstuffs than in market foodstuffs. The chemical composition on the forehead was remarkably different from that on the hand. The importance of different exposure routes depends on the residents' food choices, except decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE). For residents who consumed a 100-foot diet (mainly egg) and local wild fish, diet ingestion overwhelmed other exposure routes, and PCBs were mainly contributed by fish and HFRs by egg. For residents who consumed market food, the dermal absorption of most PCB congeners and dust ingestion of highly brominated flame retardants were relatively prominent. Fish are an important pollution indicator for biomonitoring of halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) in aquatic environments, and HOCs in fish may pose health threats to consumers. This study performed nontarget and comprehensive analyses of HOCs in fish from an e-waste recycling zone by gas chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry, and further prioritized their human exposure risks. A total of 1652 formulas of HOCs were found in the fish, of which 1222, 117, and 313 were organochlorines, organobromines, and organochlorine-bromines, respectively. The total concentrations of HOCs were 15.4-18.7 μg/g (wet weight), and organobromines were the predominant (14.1-16.8 μg/g). Of the HOCs, 41 % were elucidated with tentative structures and divided into 13 groups. The estimated total daily exposures of HOCs via dietary consumption of the fish for local adult residents were 3082-3744 ng/kg bw/day. The total exposures were dominated by several groups of HOCs with the following contribution order: polyhalogenated biphenyls and their derivatives > polyhalogenated diphenyl ethers > halo- (H-)alkanes/olefines > H-benzenes > H-dioxins > H-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons > H-phenols. In this study, we conducted comprehensive organophosphorus flame retardant (PFR) exposure assessments of both dietary and non-dietary pathways in a rural population in southern China. Skin wipes were collected from 30 volunteers. Indoor and outdoor air (gas and particles), dust in the houses of these volunteers, and foodstuffs consumed by these volunteers were simultaneously collected. The total PFR concentrations in dust, gas, and PM 2.5 varied from 53.8 to 5.14 × 10 5 ng/g, 0.528 to 4.27 ng/m 3 , and 0.390 to 16.5 ng/m 3 , respectively. The forehead (median of 1.36 × 10 3 ng/m 2 ) and hand (median of 920 ng/m 2 ) exhibited relatively high PFR concentrations, followed by the forearm (median of 440 ng/m 2 ) and upper arm (median of 230 ng/m 2 ). The PFR concentrations in the food samples varied from 0.0700 to 10.9 ng/g wet weight in the order of egg > roast duck/goose and vegetable > pork > chicken > fish. Tris(1-chloro-isopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the main PFR in the non-diet samples, whereas the profiles of PFR individuals varied by food type. Laying hens were exposed to feeds spiked with a series of perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs) ranging from perfluorobutanoic acid (C4) to perfluorooctadecanoic acid (C18) to investigate their bioaccumulation, tissue distribution, and maternal transfer. We found that PFCAs with longer carbon chains (>8) were more efficiently absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract than those with shorter chains (≤8), and that the rate of depuration varied inversely with the carbon chain length in a U-shaped pattern. Moreover, bioaccumulation potential increased with increasing carbon-chain length, except for C4. Distinct affinities were observed for specific carbon-chain PFCAs across various tissues, evident from their differential accumulation during both uptake and depuration phases. Specifically, C9 showed a higher affinity for serum and liver, C12 was more prevalent in yolk, C14 was notably abundant in the brain, and C18 was predominant in other tissues. Furthermore, the egg-maternal ratio (EMR) increased with increasing carbon-chain length from C7 to C11 and reached a plateau phase for C12 to C18. Our study also confirmed the key role of phospholipids in the tissue distribution and maternal transfer of long-chain PFCAs. This study sheds light on the interaction between PFCAs and biological tissues and reveals the toxicokinetic factors that influence the bioaccumulation of PFCAs. The atropisomeric enrichment of chiral polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can trace the movement of PCBs through food webs, but it is a challenge to elucidate the prey uptake and stereoselective biotransformation of PCBs in different species. The present study investigated the concentrations and enantiomer fractions (EFs) of chiral PCBs in invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, and birds. Chiral PCB signature was estimated in total prey for different predators based on quantitative prey sources. The nonracemic PCBs in snakehead ( Ophiocephalus argus ) were mainly from prey. EFs of PCBs in amphibians and birds were mainly influenced by biotransformation, which showed enrichment of (+)-CBs 132 and 135/144 and different enantiomers of CBs 95 and 139/149. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) of chiral PCBs were higher than 1 for amphibians and passerine birds and lower than 1 for kingfisher ( Alcedo atthis ) and snakehead. BMFs were significantly correlated with EFs of chiral PCBs in predators and indicative of atropisomeric enrichment of PCBs across different species. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were higher in the riparian food web than in the aquatic food web because of the high metabolism capacity of chiral PCBs in aquatic predators. The results highlight the influences of species-specific prey sources and biotransformation on the trophic dynamics of chiral PCBs.

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are a large family of widespread contaminants of worldwide concern and well-known as "forever chemicals". Direct emission of PFAAs from the fluorochemical industry is a crucial source of PFAA pollutants in the environment. This study implemented nontarget analysis and comprehensive characterization for a category of new PFAA contaminants, i.e., iodinated PFAAs (IPFAAs), in fluorochemical industry wastewater and relevant contaminated river water by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry with a cascade precursor ion exclusion (PIE) strategy and in-house developed data extraction and processing algorithms. A total of 26 IPFAAs (including 2 isomers of an IPFAA) were found and identified with tentative molecular structures. Semiquantification of the IPFAAs was implemented, and the total concentrations of IPFAAs were 0.16-285.52 and 0.15-0.17 μg/L in wastewater and river water, respectively. The high concentrations in association with the predicted ecotoxicities and environmental behaviors demonstrate that these IPFAAs are worthy of more concern and further in-depth research. The cascade PIE strategy along with the data extraction and processing algorithms can be extended to nontarget analysis for other pollutants beyond IPFAAs. The nontarget identification and characterization outcomes provide new understanding on the environmental occurrence and pollution status of IPFAAs from a comprehensive perspective.

A trophic position (TP) model (TP mix model) that simultaneously considered trophic discrimination factor and β Glu/Phe variations was developed in this study and was first applied to investigate the trophic transfer of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in wetland food webs. The TP mix model characterized the structure of the wetland food web more accurately and significantly improved the reliability of TMF compared to the TP bulk , TP AAs , and TP simmr models, which were calculated based on the methods of stable nitrogen isotope analysis of bulk, traditional AAs-N-CSIA, and weighted β Glu/Phe , respectively. Food source analysis revealed three interlocking food webs (kingfisher, crab, and frogs) in this wetland. The highest HOP biomagnification capacities (TMF mix ) were found in the kingfisher food web (0.24-82.0), followed by the frog (0.08-34.0) and crab (0.56-11.7) food webs. The parabolic trends of TMF mix across combinations of log K OW in the frog food web were distinct from those of aquatic food webs (kingfisher and crab), which may be related to differences in food web composition and HOP bioaccumulation behaviors between aquatic and terrestrial organisms. This study provides a new tool to accurately study the trophic transfer of contaminants in wetlands and terrestrial food webs with diverse species and complex feeding relationships.

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) can rapidly biotransform into two types of metabolites in biota: (1) organophosphate diesters (DAPs) and (2) hydroxylated OPFRs (HO-OPFRs). Therefore, the levels of parent OPFRs alone are not sufficient to indicate OPFR pollution in biological organisms. This study analyzed 12 OPFR metabolites, including 6 DAPs and 6 HO-OPFRs, in a typical freshwater food chain consisted of crucian carp, catfish, mud carp, snakehead, and oriental river prawn. The total concentrations of OPFR metabolites were comparable to those of parent OPFRs, and ranged from 0.65 to 17 ng/g ww. Bis(2-butoxyethyl) 3'-hydroxy-2-butoxyethyl phosphate (14%-77%), di-n-butyl phosphate (DNBP) (6.7%-24%), bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP) (0.7%-35%), and 1-hydroxy-2-propyl bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPHIPP) (6.0%-24%) were the major OPFR metabolites. Various aquatic species exhibited significant differences in their OPFR metabolite/parent ratios (MPR) (p < 0.05), indicating varying biotransformation potentials of different organisms for various OPFRs. The growth-independent accumulation of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP), tris(chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), triphenyl phosphate, and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate in mud carps could be explained by their biotransformation potential. A significant negative correlation was found between the concentration of bis(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate and δ 15 N values (p < 0.05), with a calculated trophic magnification factor (TMF) of 0.66. The spatiotemporal bioaccumulation, trophic transfer of antibiotics, and regulation of the phytoplankton biological pump were quantitatively evaluated in the Pearl River, South China. The occurrence of antibiotics in organisms indicated a significant spatiotemporal trend associated with the life cycle of phytoplankton. Higher temporal bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were found in phytoplankton at the bloom site, while lower BAFs of antibiotics in organisms could not be explained by phytoplankton biomass dilution but were attributed to the low bioavailability of antibiotics, which was highly associated with distribution coefficients ( R 2 = 0.480-0.595, p < 0.05). Such lower BAFs of antibiotics in phytoplankton at higher biomass sites hampered the entry of antibiotics into food webs, and trophic dilutions were subsequently observed for antibiotics except for ciprofloxacin (CFX) and sulfamerazine (SMZ) at sites with blooms in all seasons. Distribution of CFX, norfloxacin (NFX), and sulfapyridine (SPD) showed further significant positive relationships with the plasma protein fraction ( R 2 = 0.275-0.216, p < 0.05). Both mean BAFs and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were significantly negatively correlated with phytoplankton biomass ( R 2 = 0.661-0.741, p < 0.05). This study highlights the importance of the biological pump in the regulation of spatiotemporal variations in bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics in anthropogenic-impacted eutrophic rivers in subtropical regions.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are important toxic organic components in fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), whereas the links between PM 2.5 toxicity and associated PACs in ambient air are poorly understood. This study investigated the spatial-temporal variations of PACs in PM 2.5 collected from 11 sampling sites across a Chinese megacity and characterized the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cytotoxicity induced by organic extracts of PM 2.5 based on cellular assays. The extra trees regression model based on machine learning and ridge regression were used to identify the key toxicants among complex PAC mixtures. The total concentrations of these PACs varied from 2.12 to 71.7 ng/m 3 across the study city, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the main PACs. The spatial variations of the toxicological indicators generally resembled those of the PAC concentrations, and the PM 2.5 related to waste treatment facilities exhibited the strongest toxic potencies. The ROS generation was highly correlated with high molecular weight PAHs (MW302 PAHs), followed by PAHs with MW<302 amu and oxygenated PAHs, but not with nitrated PAHs and the plastics additives. The cell mortality showed weak correlations with these organic constituents. The associations between the biological endpoints and these PM 2.5 -bound contaminants were further confirmed by exposure to authentic chemicals. Four primary sources of PACs were identified, among which coal and biomass combustion sources (30.2% of the total PACs) and industrial sources (31.0%) were predominant. PACs emitted from industrial sources were highly associated with ROS generation in this city. Anaerobic bacteria transform aromatic halides through reductive dehalogenation. This dehalorespiration is catalyzed by the supernucleophilic coenzyme vitamin B 12 , cob(I)alamin, in reductive dehalogenases. So far, the underlying inner-sphere electron transfer (ET) mechanism has been discussed controversially. In the present study, all 36 chloro-, bromo-, and fluorobenzenes and full-size cobalamin are analyzed at the quantum chemical density functional theory level with respect to a wide range of theoretically possible inner-sphere ET mechanisms. The calculated reaction free energies within the framework of Co I ···X (X = F, Cl, and Br) attack rule out most of the inner-sphere pathways. The only route with feasible energetics is a proton-coupled two-ET mechanism that involves a B 12 side-chain tyrosine (modeled by phenol) as a proton donor. For 12 chlorobenzenes and 9 bromobenzenes with experimental data from Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain CBDB1, the newly proposed PC-TET mechanism successfully discriminates 16 of 17 active from 4 inactive substrates and correctly predicts the observed regiospecificity to 100%. Moreover, fluorobenzenes are predicted to be recalcitrant in agreement with experimental findings. Conceptually, based on the Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle, the computational approach provides novel mechanistic insights and may serve as a tool for predicting the energetic feasibility of reductive aromatic dehalogenation.

Halogenated organic additives (HOAs) are used in plastic components of various electrical products, potentially causing detrimental effects on the eco-environment and humans. Besides reported HOAs, many unknown HOAs may be present in electrical product plastics and urgently require identification and characterization. This study performed nontarget analysis and comprehensive characterization of HOAs in three typical electrical product plastics by nontarget analysis using gas chromatography-negative chemical ionization-high-resolution mass spectrometry in association with in-house-developed chlorine/bromine-specific data-processing algorithms. A total of 674 formulas of HOAs were identified in the plastics dismantled from three electrical products, among which 166, 362, and 146 were organochlorines, organobromines, and mix-chlorinated/brominated organic compounds, respectively. The identified HOAs were semiquantified, and the total concentrations of HOAs in individual plastics were 445-1549 ng/g. Organobromines showed the most species and the highest abundances in all of the plastics, of which the abundances accounted for 86.6-98.0% of the total HOAs. Partial HOAs (209 formulas) were tentatively structurally elucidated, which were classified into 13 groups, i.e., halogenated alkyl phenoxyethyls (H-alkyl phenoxyethyls), H-alkylbenzenes, H-benzenes, H-bisphenol A (H-BPAs), H-dioxins, H-diphenyl ethers, H-biphenyls/terphenyls, H-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, H-phenols, H-phenyl esters, H-phenyl-aldehydes/ketones, H-quinones, and an undefined group containing the HOAs such as dechlorane plus and chlordane. H-BPAs were the predominant HOAs in the plastics, showing relatively high concentrations (13-281 ng/g), and tetrabromobisphenol A was the most abundant H-BPA, with the concentrations of 9-196 ng/g. The comprehensive characterization results represent a holistic picture on the species features and abundance distributions of HOAs in electrical product plastics and provide an inventory of crucial HOAs worthy of concern. HOAs may migrate from plastics and release into the environment and are possibly an important source of halogenated organic pollutants in the environment, thus calling for further investigation and proper regulation.

The effects of sex and pregnancy on the bioaccumulation and tissue distribution of legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Chinese water snakes were investigated. The bioaccumulation factor of PFASs showed a positive correlation with their protein-water partition coefficients (log K PW ), and steric hindrance effects were observed when the molecular volume was > 357 Å 3 . PFAS levels in females were significantly lower than those in males. The chemical composition of pregnant females was significantly different from that of non-pregnant females and males. The maternal transfer efficiencies of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid were higher than those of other PFASs, and a positive correlation between the maternal transfer potential and log K PW was observed for other PFASs. Tissues with high phospholipid content exhibited higher concentrations of ∑PFASs. Numerous physiological changes occurred in maternal organ systems during pregnancy, leading to the re-distribution of chemicals among different tissues. The change in tissue distribution of PFASs that are easily and not-so-easily maternally transferred was in the opposite direction. The extent of compound transfer from the liver to the egg determined tissue re-distribution during pregnancy.

Human exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and the subsequent risk to human health remain an important concern due to the "new" input of DDTs in the environment, especially since exposure to DDTs in indoor microenvironments is often ignored. In this study, we identified a new source of DDT emission in indoor environments and evaluated the health risk from the exposure to DDTs by investigating DDTs in indoor and outdoor dust, air, and coatings of household items in rural areas of Qingyuan, South China. The concentrations of DDTs in house dust and air were < MQL (method quantification limit)-3450 ng/g (median 42.4 ng/g) and 22.7-965 pg/m 3 (median 49.5 pg/m 3 ), respectively, which were significantly higher than the outdoor DDT values. Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) was the main isomer in air samples, while DDT was the dominant isomer in indoor dust. Significant correlations between different DDT isomers were observed in indoor samples but not in outdoor samples. Furniture coating was identified as a source of DDTs in the indoor dust. The total daily exposure dose of DDTs (1.75 × 10 -2  ng/kg bw/day for adults and 1.28 × 10 -1  ng/kg bw/day for toddlers) through inhalation, dust ingestion, and dermal contact was found unlikely to pose a health risk. Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) were massively produced for varied industrial purposes, of which improper handling and consequent environmental release resulted in worldwide contamination. The present study investigated the occurrence and spatial distribution of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP/MCCPs) in 171 sediment samples from black-odorous urban rivers across China. Total SCCP and MCCP concentrations ranged from 8.3 to 9.4 × 10 4 (median: 1.1 × 10 3 ) ng/g dw, and from not-detected-value to 1.0 × 10 6 (median: 1.3 × 10 4 ) ng/g dw, respectively. No clear spatial distribution of SCCPs and MCCPs was observed since black-odorous urban rivers were polluted by point-sources of the SCCP/MCCPs. Significant positive correlations were identified between SCCP/MCCPs and total organic carbon, and between SCCP/MCCPs and other persistent organic matter, including polybrominated diethyl ethers, polychlorinated biphenyls, antibiotics, and plasticizers. The average ratios of MCCPs to SCCPs in most samples were divided into 11 and 16, implying the manufacturing and use of at least two types of CP technical mixtures in China. The composition of SCCP/MCCPs were similar to that in their commercial products. Ecological risk assessments by two approaches, including the Federal Environmental Quality Guidelines and Risk Quotient, both revealed that SCCP/MCCP in surface sediments confer an ecological risk. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: SCCPs and MCCPs can be considered "hazardous materials" because of their massive production and their potential persistence, long-distance transfer, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) including polyfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and polyfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids are a large category of crucial environmental pollutants of global concern. Besides known PFAAs, numerous unknown species may exist in the environment, urgently needing discovery and characterization. This study implemented nontarget analysis for a group of novel PFAA pollutants, viz., iodinated PFAAs (I-PFAAs) in wastewater from a fluorochemical manufacturing park by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry in combination with an iodine-specific data-processing algorithm. The algorithm took into account the diagnostic fragment iodine ion (I - ) together with carbon and sulfur isotopologue distributions. In total, 18 I-PFAA formulas involving 21 congeners were identified. Semiquantification was conducted, and the total concentrations of I-PFAAs were 1.9-274.7 μg/L, indicating severe pollution of I-PFAAs in the wastewater. The determined concentrations along with predicted environmental behaviors and toxicities demonstrate that I-PFAAs merit further in-depth investigation. The analytical method including the instrumental analysis and data-processing algorithm can be extended to screening and identification of I-PFAAs in other matrices. Furthermore, the analysis results for the first time provide recognition on the occurrence, distribution features, and pollution status of I-PFAAs in the environment.

Human hair has increasingly been used as a noninvasive biomonitoring matrix for assessment of human exposure to various organic contaminants (OCs). However, the accumulation processes of OCs in hair remains unclear thus far, which raised concerns on the reliability of hair analysis results for OCs. Herein, Chinese population was selected as the study subject, the effects of changes in hair biological characteristics, including length and color, on the accumulation of OCs in hair was investigated. With the growing of hair shaft and the increased distance from the scalp, a significant increasing trend was found for levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organophosphate flame retardants (PFRs) along the hair shafts (p < 0.05). Source identification using Chemical Mass Balance model indicated that PCBs in hair were mainly from exogenous sources (air and dust). The accumulation rates of PCB and PFR individuals in the hair shaft decreased with increasing of log K ow values. Additionally, the levels of OCs in hair decreased with the change in color from black to white, probably because of the loss of melanin in white hair. The ratios (R) of C black /C white were significantly correlated with the log K ow values for individual chemicals (p < 0.05), implying that OCs with high log K ow values tend to accumulate more readily in black hair. The results of this study demonstrated the growth and change in colors of hair, as well as the physicochemical properties of chemicals, play vital roles in the accumulation of OCs in hair. Fetal exposure to multiple organic contaminants (OCs) is a public concern because of the adverse effects of OCs on early life development. Infant hair has the potential to be used as an alternative matrix to identify susceptible fetuses, owing to its reliability, sensitivity, and advantages associated with sampling, handling, and ethics. However, the applicability of infant hair for assessing in utero exposure to OCs is still limited. In this study, 57 infant hair samples were collected in Guangzhou, South China, to evaluate the levels and compositions of typical OCs in the fetus. Most of the target OCs were detected in infant hair, with medians of 144 μg/g, 17.7 μg/g, 192 ng/g, 46.9 ng/g, and 1.36 ng/g for phthalate esters (PAEs), alternative plasticizers (APs), organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), respectively. Meanwhile, paired maternal hair (0-9 cm from the scalp) was collected to examine the associations between maternal and infant hair for individual compounds. Low-brominated PBDEs tended to deposit in infant hair, with median concentrations approximately two times higher than those in maternal samples. Levels of PBDEs and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) in paired maternal and infant hair showed strong positive correlations (p < 0.05), while most plasticizers (PAEs and APs) were poorly correlated between paired hair samples. Exposure sources were responsible for the variation in correlation between OC levels in the paired infant and maternal samples. Crude relationships between fetal exposure to OCs and birth size were examined using the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model. BDE-28 was found to be adversely associated with the birth size. Factors affecting the trophic transfer of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems remain to be clarified. Here, we determined the abundances of MPs in multiple terrestrial and aquatic species, including insects, snails, crustaceans, fishes, snakes, birds, and voles, from an abandoned e-waste recycling site. Approximately 80% of MPs were within the size range 20-50 μm. In wildlife, the MP abundances per individual and per body weight were found to be positively and negatively correlated with body weight, respectively. Herein, terrestrial vertebrates, primarily birds, exhibited more complex compositions of polymer types than other organisms owing to the wide foraging areas and diverse food sources. However, according to the MPs modeled and the observed results in bird food chains, MPs do not appear to be preferentially retained in the bird gastrointestinal tract. The species-specific polymer types identified indicate the influences of habitat on MP pollution in organisms, which is further supported by significant correlations between the abundance of MPs and δ 13 C in the terrestrial food web ( p < 0.05). In the analyzed bird species, the low MP abundance detected in birds compared with the amount of food ingested indicates that MPs constitute a negligible factor in the bioaccumulation of chemical pollutants.

Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are emerging persistent organic pollutants of great concern due to their ubiquitous distribution in the environment. However, little information is available on the biotransformation of SCCPs in organisms. In this study, a chlorinated decane: 1, 2, 5, 5, 6, 9, 10-heptachlorodecanes (HeptaCDs) was subjected to in vitro metabolism by human and chicken liver microsomes at environmentally relevant concentration. Using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry, two metabolites: monohydroxylated hexachlorodecane (HO-HexCD) and monohydroxy heptachlorodecane (HO-HeptaCD) were detected in human liver microsomal assays, while only one metabolite (HO-HexCD) was identified in chicken liver microsomal assays. The formation of HO-HexCD was fitted to a Michaelis-Menten model for chicken liver microsomes with a V max (maximum metabolic rate) value of 4.52 pmol/mg/min. Metabolic kinetic parameters could not be obtained for human liver microsomes as steady state conditions were not reached under our experimental conditions. Notwithstanding this, the observed average biotransformation rate of HeptaCDs was much faster for human liver microsomes than for chicken liver microsomes. Due to the lack of authentic standards for the identified metabolites, the detailed structure of each metabolite could not be confirmed due to the possibility of conformational isomers. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are widespread contaminants in the environment. The variations of these chemicals in plants throughout their life cycle is little known. In this study, OPEs, OPE metabolites, and PAEs in peanut and corn grown under field conditions, soil, and air were measured to understand the uptake and translocation, distributions in the plant compartments, and metabolism in the plants. The soil concentrations showed an enrichment effect of OPEs onto the rhizosphere soil but a depletion effect of PAEs on rhizosphere soils. The PAE concentrations between peanut (with a mean of 1295 ng/g dw) and corn (3339 ng/g dw) were significantly different, but the OPE concentrations were not significantly different (with means of 15.6 and 19.2 ng/g dw, respectively). OPE metabolites were also detected in the plants, with lower concentrations and detection rates. Similarities and differences in the temporal variations of the concentrations of traditional OPEs, novel OPEs, and PAEs in plants during their growth were observed. The variations were dependent on both plant species and particular tissues. The leaf compartment is the most important reservoir of OPEs and PAEs (but not OPE metabolites) for both species, highlighting the importance of an aerial uptake pathway. The chemicals have a low potential to be translocated into peanut and corn kernels, reducing their risks via food consumption. Less hydrophobic compounds have higher root concentration factors in this study. Samples of Asota caricae (larvae, pupae, and adults) and its host plant leaf (Ficus hispida), larvae of Aloa lactinea, and mixed adult moths were collected from an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling site in south China. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers were found to exhibit concentrations of 420-1300, 100-860, and 7.6-49 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The different chemical compositions among the samples of the three groups indicated that at least two exposure scenarios occurred among the moths in the study area. A complex relationship between bioamplification factors and the octanol-water partition coefficient (log K OW ) was observed during metamorphosis, in which a positive relationship was evident for 5 < log K OW  < 7, whereas an inverse relationship occurred for log K OW values outside of this range. The biomagnification factors (BMFs) calculated from the larvae of Asota caricae to the host plant were negatively correlated with log K OW for all chemicals, differing completely from those obtained in previous studies. However, after metamorphosis, the correlation between BMF and log K OW was found to coincide with that in previous studies. These results indicate that the biotransformation of pollutants in organisms played a key role in determining whether or not biomagnification occurred in organisms and highlight the potential application of the metabolic rate of chemicals in screening-level risk assessments of new chemicals. Biomagnification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is affected by physiochemical properties of POPs and ecological factors of wildlife. In this study, influences on species-specific biomagnification of POPs from aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates to eight songbird species were investigated. The median concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in birds were 175 to 13 200 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and 62.7 to 3710 ng/g lw, respectively. Diet compositions of different invertebrate taxa for songbird species were quantified by quantitative fatty acid signature analysis. Aquatic insects had more contributions of more hydrophobic POPs, while terrestrial invertebrates had more contributions of less hydrophobic PCBs in songbirds. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) and trophic magnification factors had parabolic relationships with log  K OW and log  K OA . The partition ratios of POPs between bird muscle and air were significantly and positively correlated with log  K OA of POPs, indicating respiratory elimination as an important determinant in biomagnification of POPs in songbirds. In this study, the species-specific biomagnification of POPs in songbird species cannot be explained by stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen and body parameters of bird species. BMFs of most studied POPs were significantly correlated with proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids in different species of songbirds.

To assess the impacts of e-waste regulations on environmental pollution, the levels, compositions, and human exposure assessment of organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs), emerging PFRs (ePFRs), phthalate esters (PAEs), and alternative plasticizers (APs) were investigated in indoor dust samples collected from homes in a former e-waste dismantling area in 2013 and in 2017, 4 years after the implementation of legislation and regulations governing e-waste dismantling activities in this area. The median concentrations of ΣPFRs, ΣePFRs, ΣPAEs, and ΣAPs in dust decreased from 5680, 1650, 167,200, and 140,600 ng/g in 2013 to 1210, 476, 95,000, and 45,300 ng/g in 2017, respectively, suggesting that the national and local regulations prohibiting primitive e-waste dismantling activities is effective in mitigating the pollution status for these chemicals. In the analyzed dust samples, tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), resorcinol bis(diphenylphosphate) (RDP), and bisphenol A-bis(diphenyl phosphate) (BDP) were the major PFRs/ePFRs, contributing to 77% and 76% of the total PFRs/ePFRs in 2013 and 2017, respectively. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-iso-nonyl phthalate (DINP), di-iso-decyl phthalate (DIDP), and di-n-butyl phthalate (DNBP) were the major PAEs/APs, with contributions of 89% and 95% for the total PAEs/APs in 2013 and 2017, respectively. Plasticizers are ubiquitous pollutants in the environment, whereas few efforts have been made to elucidate their emission sources in the atmosphere. In this research, the spatioseasonal variations and sources of particle-bound (PM 2.5 ) phthalates (PAEs) and their substitutes (APs) at residential sites in seven districts and at four potential point-source sites across a megacity in South China were revealed. The total concentrations of PAEs ranging from 10.7 to 528 ng/m 3 were substantially higher than those of APs (1.45.58.5 ng/m 3 ). Significant spatial variations in the concentrations of the pollutants were observed, which were generally higher at the sites with intensive industrial activities and the point-source sites. Most atmospheric plasticizer levels peaked in summer, probably due to the temperature-promoted volatilization. Seven sources of plasticizers were identified by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The sources in less industrialized districts are mainly associated with domestic and commercial emissions and with industry in the industrialized districts. Specifically, plastics and personal care products together contributed 60% of the plasticizers in the atmosphere of this city, followed by solvents and polyester industry sources. The incremental lifetime cancer risk of inhalation exposure to bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in the study city is below the acceptable level. While the secondary metabolites of DDT such as 2,2-bis(chlorophenyl)-1-chloroethylene (DDMU) and 2,2-bis(chlorophenyl)methane (DDM) have been detected in the environment for several decades, knowledge is extremely limited on their bioaccumulation characteristics. Here, we reported the bioaccumulation and maternal transfer of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM in two wild fishes, i.e., the northern snakehead (Channa argus) and crucian carp (Carassius auratus), from a DDT contaminated site in South China. The hepatic concentrations of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM in the fish were up to 549 and 893 ng/g lipid weight, contributing 5.3% and 3.2% in average to ΣDDXs (the sum concentrations of DDT and its 6 metabolites), respectively. The residues of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM in the fish exhibited interspecific and intraspecific variations, resulting from the differences in lipid content, sex, and body sizes (length and mass) between or within species. Both p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM were consistently detected in the fish eggs, demonstrating their maternal transfer in female fish. The mean eggs to liver lipid-normalized concentration (E/L) ratios of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM were 0.98 and 1.77 in the northern snakehead, 0.35 and 0.01 in crucian carp, respectively; which were comparable to or even exceeded those of DDT and its major metabolites calculated in the same individual. Despite several studies having addressed the bioaccumulation of Dechlorane Plus (DP) flame retardant in wildlife, there is still a dearth of information for reptiles in general and for snakes in particular. Here, we report the residue levels and trophic transfer of syn-, anti-, and anti-Cl 11 -DP in a frog-eating snake-namely, the striped keelback snake Amphiesma stolata-from a DP hotspot in South China. The concentrations of syn-, anti-, and anti-Cl 11 -DP in A. stolata ranged from 1.06-21.2, 2.13-21.5, and 0.16-10.6 ng/g lipid weight, respectively, with significantly higher levels in males compared with females. Statistical analysis showed that the concentrations of these chemicals were negatively correlated with body sizes (length and mass) of the snake. The fractional abundance of anti-DP (f anti ) did not significantly differ either between the sexes or between A. stolata and its diet (i.e., frogs). However, f anti showed positive correlations with the snake's body size and negative correlations with ∑DP concentrations (summed concentrations of syn- and anti-DP), indicating that body size and DP residue levels are important factors influencing DP isomeric profiles in these snakes. Biomagnification factors estimated based on the relationship between A. stolata and frogs were 0.49 ± 0.01 (mean ± SE), 0.44 ± 0.09, and 1.79 ± 0.54 for syn-, anti-, and anti-Cl 11 -DP, respectively, suggesting trophic dilution of syn- and anti-DP and a mild biomagnification of anti-Cl 11 -DP from frogs to snakes., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. To assess the impacts of regulations and laws enhancing the management of e-waste in China, hair samples of local residents and dismantling workers in a former e-waste area in 2016 and 2019, five and eight years after the implementation of legislation and regulations in this area since 2011, respectively. The temporal changes in levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in the hair samples were investigated. Besides, the levels of these organic contaminants in hair samples collected from the same area in 2009, 2011, and 2015 reported in previous studies were used as comparison. The highest median levels of Σ 9 PCBs (719 ng/g), Σ 3 Penta-BDEs (16.1 ng/g), and Σ 3 Octa-BDEs (8.46 ng/g) in hair were found in 2011, with a significant decrease trend was observed from 2011 to 2019 (p < 0.05). As for Deca-BDE, the levels reached the maximum in 2015 (133 ng/g), following by a significant decrease to 2016 (7.46 ng/g) and 2019 (2.61 ng/g) (p < 0.05). The median levels of Σ 8 OPFRs, also decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from 2015 (357 ng/g) to 2016 (264 ng/g) and 2019 (112 ng/g). Moreover, a significantly increasing trend was observed for the ratios of triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and tris(2-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), two predominant OPFRs, to Deca-BDE from 2015 to 2019 (p < 0.01), suggesting a shift of "legacy" to "emerging" contaminants released from e-waste recycling in this area. The crude e-waste recycling has been regulated in China since the late 2000s; however, information on the recent levels and the ecological risks of e-waste derived contaminants such as halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in the e-waste sites are limited. We therefore examined the concentrations of several HFRs in wild, prey-sized mud carps collected from a typical e-waste site in 2006, 2011 and 2016, to understand the exposure dynamics and ecological risk of these chemicals. Several ecological and biological parameters including δ 15 N, δ 13 C, body size and lipid content of the fish were also examined, to ensure an overall uniformity of the sample set among the sampling years. Among the HFRs measured, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were detected at the highest concentrations (contributing >90% to ∑HFRs), followed by Dechlorane Plus (DPs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and alternative brominated flame retardants (ABFRs). The fish concentrations of ∑PBDEs, ∑PBBs and ∑DPs significantly dropped by 65%, 57% and 53% from 2006 to 2011, and 12%, 74% and 51% from 2011 to 2016, respectively; likely reflecting the positive impact of the environmental regulations on crude e-waste recycling. The ∑ABFRs concentrations were also decreased by 80% from 2006 to 2011, but increased by 127% from 2011 to 2016; suggesting possible fresh input of these novel HFRs in recent years. In addition to the changes in the HFR concentrations, contaminant profiles in the fish were also changed, possibly due to environmental degradation of the HFRs. In this study, surface sediment samples from 173 black-odorous urban rivers in 74 cities of China were investigated regarding the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological risk of legacy phthalates (LPs) and alternative plasticizers (APs). The total concentrations of Σ 7 LPs and Σ 6 APs ranged from 0.0035 to 522 μg/g dw (median: 33 μg/g dw; mean: 60 μg/g dw) and from 0.0015 to 16 μg/g dw (median: 16 μg/g dw; mean: 2.2 μg/g dw), respectively. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and di-iso-butyl phthalate (DiBP) were the dominant LPs, and di-iso-decyl phthalate and di-iso-nonylcyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate were the dominant APs. The concentrations and compositions of the LPs and APs varied among different sites and regions, implying location-specific use or production of LPs and APs. The pollutant concentrations in southern and central China were higher than those in northern China. Among the seven regions, Northwest China had the lowest concentrations of LPs and APs. This could be related to industry development level, municipal facilities, and population density. Total organic carbon (TOC) was significantly and positively correlated with the pollutant concentrations, implying that TOC could be an important influencing factor for the distribution of LPs and APs in sediments. The risk quotients of DiBP and DnBP in almost all sediment samples were above 1, indicating the high ecological risks to aquatic organisms. Antibiotic levels in black-odor water could reflect the usage amount of antibiotics in population. On the other hand, these antibiotics are the source of antibiotics in the environmental water. Currently, researches on antibiotics in black-odor sediments are still lacking. In this study, 174 black and odor sediment samples from 74 cities in 28 provinces in China were collected for analysis. Among 44 targeted antibiotics, 13 antibiotics were detected in more than 30% of sediment samples. Fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines were the predominant antibiotics in these field samples, with average concentrations of up to 2074 and 1902 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively, followed by macrolides (87.9 ng/g dw), lincosamides (8.06 ng/g dw) and sulfonamides (8.38 ng/g dw). High antibiotic contamination levels were almost always detected in black-odor sludges from economically less developed small cities; however, the difference in antibiotic concentrations between well-developed and small cities in China was not statistically significant. In addition, among the seven regions within China, no significant difference in concentrations was observed for the most antibiotics. Variances in antibiotic composition patterns in the 28 provinces of China may be due to differences in bacterial resistance, prescription habits, efficacy, and sediment carbon concentrations among various regions. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are ubiquitous contaminants in the environment, whereas their atmospheric processes and fate are poorly understood. The present study revealed the spatial heterogeneity and seasonal variations of traditional and novel OPEs in PM 2.5 (particulate matter with diameters < 2.5 μm) across a megacity (including residential areas and potential source sites) in South China. Potential influencing factors on the contamination levels of OPEs were addressed. The total concentrations of 11 traditional OPEs ranging from 262 to 42,194 pg/m 3 (median = 1872 pg/m 3 ) were substantially higher than those of 10 novel OPEs (33.5-3835 pg/m 3 , median = 318 pg/m 3 ). Significant spatial and temporal variations in the concentrations of most OPEs were observed. The overall district-specific contamination levels in this city showed dependence on the secondary industry sector for non-predominant OPEs and on the tertiary industry for predominant OPEs. The seasonal variations of the OPE concentrations suggest difference in their sources or influence of meteorological conditions. The correlations between the individual OPEs in PM 2.5 are determined largely by either their applications or physicochemical properties (in particular vapor pressure). The correlations between OPE concentrations and each meteorological factor (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and surface solar radiation) were inconsistent (positive and negative). Wind speed had the greatest effect on the OPE levels; While most OPEs bound to PM 2.5 were not efficiently scavenged by below-cloud rainfall. The results suggest that atmospheric half-life and Henry's Law Constant of OPEs are also determining factors for the wind speed and rainfall influence, respectively. Tetrabromobisphenol-A and Tetrabromobisphenol-S (TBBPA/S) and their derivatives have attracted widespread attention owing to their environmental risks and adverse effects on human health. In this study, we developed an analytical method based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of TBBPA/S and their eight derivatives in soil samples. After ultrasonic extraction, TBBPA/S and their derivatives were purified using an LC-Si cartridge with 1 mL acetone and 30 mL dichloromethane/n-hexane (1/1, v/v) as the eluent. In the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, TBBPA and TBBPS were quantified with electrospray ionization (ESI), whereas their derivatives were quantified with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). The proposed method was verified with blank spiking and matrix spiking experiments. All target compounds were recovered at the range of 78-124% and the average recoveries of surrogate standard 13 C 12 -labeled TBBPA were 103% and 99% in spiked blank and soil samples, respectively. The method quantitative limits (MQLs) of TBBPA/S and their derivatives in soil samples ranged from 0.22 to 8.8 pg/g dw. Five types of tissues, including the liver, kidney, intestine, lung, and heart, were collected from black-spotted frogs and bullfrogs to study the tissue-specific accumulation of organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) and plasticizers. Thirteen PFRs and nine plasticizers were detected, with average total concentrations of 1.4-13 ng/g ww and 858-5503 ng/g ww in black-spotted frogs, 3.6-46 ng/g ww and 355-3504 ng/g ww in bullfrogs. Significant differences in pollutant concentrations among different tissues in the two frog species were found, indicating the specific selectivity distribution of PFRs and plasticizers. Overall, liver tissues exhibited significantly higher pollutant concentrations. The pollutant concentration ratios of other tissue to the sum of liver tissue and other tissues (OLR, C other /( C other + C liver )) corresponding to male frogs were significantly greater than those of females, suggesting that male frogs could have higher metabolic potentials for PFRs and plasticizers. No obvious correlations between OLR and log K OW were found, indicating that the other factors (e.g., bioaccumulation pathway and metabolism) besides lipophicity could influence the deposition of PFRs and plasticizers in frog livers. Different parental transfer patterns for PFRs and plasticizers were observed in frogs when using different tissues as parental tissues. Moreover, the liver tissues had similar parental transfer mechanism with muscle tissues.

One hundred forty-three surface sediment (0-5 cm depth) samples were collected from locations representing industrialized areas, less-industrialized areas, and e-waste recycling areas in the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The spatial distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and their potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms were investigated. The average PCB concentration in the less-industrialized areas (background) in the PRD was approximately 10 ng/g dry weight (dw), which was generally half that found in the industrialized areas (approximately 22 ng/g dw). Severe PCB contamination, with concentrations ranging from 1000 to 26500 ng/g dw, was found in pond sediments collected from e-waste recycling areas. It is very likely that such contamination would have had adverse effects on the aquatic biota there. PCBs in the e-waste recycling areas were dominated by penta- and hex-PCB congeners, which made them significantly different from those found in other regions, where tri- and tetra-PCB congeners were predominant. Higher abundances of less chlorinated congeners were seen in the less-industrialized areas compared to the industrialized areas. Differences in the transport abilities of different congeners, together with dechlorination of higher chlorinated congeners, is the most likely reasons for this.

Air pollution by airborne particles is a serious health problem worldwide. The present study was aimed at investigating the concentrations and composition of total suspended particles (TSPs) and PM 2.5 at various industrial/commercial sites of Guangzhou, a megacity of Southern China. Major and trace elements, ions and carbonaceous fraction were determined and main components were calculated. In addition, in order to assess the potential toxic on the respiratory system of these PM, cytotoxicity of size-fractionated particles (PM 10-5.6 , PM 5.6-3.3 , PM 3.3-1.1 , PM 1.1-0.43 ) for a human lung cancer cell line (A549) was also investigated. Correlations between PM constituents and toxicity were assessed. Median levels of TSPs and PM 2.5 in industrial/commercial sites were 206 and 57.7 μg/m 3 , respectively. Nickel, Cu, Mo, Mn, Pb, and Ti were the most abundant metals in TSPs and PM 2.5 . Industrial activities and coal combustion were the most important sources of carbonaceous particles in the zone. MTT assays showed that PM 10-5.6 and PM 1.1-0.43 had the highest and the lowest cytotoxicity to A549 cell lines, respectively. Inhalable particles around the manufacturing of metal facilities and formal waste treatment plants showed a high cytotoxicity to A549 cell lines. Seven insect taxa belonging to five different orders were collected from a former Chinese e-waste dumping site to investigate the occurrences of organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) and plasticizers. The total PFR and plasticizer concentrations were in the ranges of 2.3-91 ng/g ww (median: 20 ng/g ww) and 420-15600 ng/g ww (4040 ng/g ww), respectively. The contaminant patterns varied greatly among different insect taxa owing to their specific habitats and feeding habits. The larvae of litchi stinkbugs and grasshoppers exhibited significantly higher PFR concentrations than their adult counterparts. In contrast, the adults of butterflies, moths, and dragonflies exhibited significantly higher PFR concentrations than their larvae. Additionally, negative linear correlations were frequently observed between the ratios of PFR and plasticizer concentrations in adult to larva (A/L) and log K OW in the four studied insect taxa, which were different from those corresponding to persistent organic pollutants. Notably, the contaminant concentrations of dragonfly ecdysis were significantly higher than those of dragonfly larvae, indicating that ecdysis is an important pathway by which dragonflies remove PFRs and plasticizers., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The present study investigates legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in atmospheric PM2.5 associated with various urban source sectors in a city and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling facilities in southern China. The concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel BFRs (∑2NBFRs) at the urban industrial park (UIP) sites varied greatly from 22.0 to 105 pg m-3 and from to 29.7 to 459 pg m-3, respectively, and higher concentrations were generally found at sites involving industrial sectors of electronics, plastics, and machinery. Their spatial variations at other urban potential source sites were small suggesting a lack of strong point emissions. The levels of PBDEs and ∑2NBFRs at the e-waste facilities (220-2356 pg m-3 and 83.6-569 pg m-3) were significantly higher and did not temporally decline, indicating that improvement in e-waste recycling techniques does not significantly reduce emissions of PBDEs. NBFRs dominated the BFRs at the urban sites (55% on average), while PBDEs were still dominant (78%) at the e-waste sites. PBDE congener profiles in PM2.5 were substantially different from those in commercial mixtures. The congener profiles as well as their correlations suggested frequent formation of lower brominated PBDEs from degradation of highly brominated congeners in this region, which became appreciable due to the reduced emissions. The significant correlations among the lower brominated congeners also reflected similar environmental behaviors due to similar physicochemical properties.

Many studies have reported maternal transfer of organic contaminants in oviparous species, with inconsonant results. Egg-laying sequence and selected maternal tissues may impact on assessment of potential maternal transfer of contaminants. Here, this hypothesis was verified by exposing chickens (Gallus domesticus) to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and dechlorane plus (DPs). Concentrations in eggs laid during exposure exhibited periodic fluctuations (conforming to egg-laying cycles) and a decreasing trend during depuration. Fluctuation patterns of DPs and BDE209 differed from those of other compounds. The PBDE congener profiles in eggs were dominated by BDE209 during exposure and by BDE100 and 153 during depuration. The abundance of PCB congener (CB138) which is recalcitrant to metabolism increased with laying sequence. Maternal transfer potential was negatively correlated (P = 0.0014, R 2  = 0.7874) to the log K OW of chemicals (log K OW >7) when the muscle, heart, lung, or stomach was used. No correlations were found when the liver, fat, kidneys, or intestine was used (log K OW >7), although DPs and BDE209 showed the highest maternal transfer potential. Black-spotted frogs and bullfrogs from an e-waste polluted area were collected and examined for legacy and emerging organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) and plasticizers. Total concentrations of PFRs and plasticizers were 0.62-15 ng/g wet weight (ww) and 316-4904 ng/g ww in muscles, 2.2-59 ng/g ww and 127-5757 ng/g ww in eggs and gonads, and 1.2-15 ng/g ww and 51-1510 ng/g ww in oviducts, respectively. For muscle tissues, concentrations of ∑PFRs, triethyl phosphate, tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, and tris-(chloro-2-propyl) phosphate were significantly higher in the males than females (p < 0.05). However, for reproductive tissues, eggs exhibited higher levels of those contaminants than gonads (p < 0.05). No significant sex difference in levels of plasticizers was observed in muscles. In contrast, levels for (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate, and di-iso-butyl phthalate in gonads were significantly higher than those in eggs (p < 0.05). Significantly negative linear correlations between maternal transfer ratios and log K OW were found in female frogs. Paternal transfer potentials were first significantly and positively correlated to log K OW (<6) and then decreased afterward in the males.
